Dr. Scott is the definition of a quality Professor. He cares strongly about his students and is willing to go the extra mile to help them succeed. He is smart and knows how to teach his class. He is very helpful at office hours and wants to help students understand. The class isn't the easiest if you haven't been exposed to much chemistry before, but if you are willing to work, Dr. Scott will make you succeed.

Scott is an amazing man, I am garbage at chemistry and scored a 0-44 on the preliminary test to see where you are at. He presented material clearly, and the mastery questions helped a ton. I probably could of read more of the book to do better, but his videos do a great job of explaining the important topics that you will be quizzed on. He is super approachable and he is always energetic. I had him at 8am and he was awesome at keeping things interesting and relevant. He is always in his office and he will work with you on scheduling, overall I loved this guy would take his class again in a heartbeat.

Dr. Scott is an AMAZING professor. He really knows the subject and will go to any length to help you understand the material. He is extremely helpful during office hours, so go to them! He's also a really great guy and super easy to approach. It's not an easy A but if you work at it it's definitely doable. Labs can be tedious at times but they're really not difficult. Take him if you can!

Scott is my favorite chem professor I have had throughout the WHOLE 124-16 series He is so well connected with his students AND those not in his class and as a teacher in the lab/lecture he is simply ON POINT! TAKE HIM FOR GODS SAKE! (If he isn't INSTANTLY full of registering students) :P

Although I failed this class, Dr. Scott went out of his way to help me during office hours. If you take his class, do the mastery questions on time and choose your lab partners and seating wisely. His quizzes and midterms are phrased very conceptually (which was where I got stuck). You will definitely have to study 10+ hours, make sure to check your polylearn constantly or you will fall behind. I would recommend Dr. Scott!

Professor Scott was an amazing professor, for he not only gave hands on help to his students in class, but he also writes "mastery questions", 15-20 questions per lecture that are optional to do, but severely optimize learning. They help check your understanding of concepts, create very good study guides, and sometimes the questions will be procured from them to be on quizzes and tests. His TA's were very helpful too. He made sure never to lecture for too long before switching to lab, or practice problems as to make sure we didn't get bored/tired during his classes. All in all, Professor Scott was an amazing teacher who paid close attention to each individual's progress and actually cared about whether or not his students were learning versus just succeeding.

Overall he was a good professor, but to me it seemed very difficult to apply the lab knowledge to any written tests. Very nice guy who gives a pretty average work load. Sometimes I wish he would have gone over the foundational concepts a bit slower though.

Professor Scott is extremely knowledgeable in CHEM 124, with that said though I felt like he expects his students to have a high understanding of the material just like he has. But in a 10 week course that is not super realistic. He is very willing to help during office hours. I would often go into his office hours and he had a great way of explaining things to me then that often got lost in translation during lecture. His tests are pretty fair, but only fair if you are willing to put in 12+ hours into this class per week. My grade in the class did not turn out as I would have liked but I simply did not have the MANY amount of hours this class required in order to be successful. Just be prepared going into the class and be willing to do a lot of prep work before every single class.

Dr. Scott is a fantastic chemistry teacher. He explains concepts thoroughly and clearly, and answers questions in a way that helps you while still letting you come to your own conclusions. His classes and homework assignments are very well organized on Labpal so it is very clear what you will be doing before, during, and after class. His quizzes and tests were very fair. I cannot recommend Dr. Scott enough.

I don't particularly like chemistry, but I did come to like Dr. Scott's class, despite it being two 3-hour lecture-lab sections! He's a very enthusiastic and interesting lecturer, and notes are usually to-the-point (albeit sometimes his handwriting is messy). The Mastery Questions are an absolute must if you want to do well in the class. Go to OH and ask questions if you don't understand something from the MQs/notes, because it will probably show up again on a quiz/midterm. Speaking of which, we had weekly quizzes and two midterms. The midterms had a lab portion (basically a repeat of a class lab), multiple choice, and free response. The multiple choice had some tricky - but not impossible - questions, so make sure to read the entire question carefully. However, after each midterm we had a quiz made up of "most missed questions" to determine your individual curve, which was usually generous. Overall I was quite pleased with this class, 8.75/10 would recommend.

Dr. Scott is an excellent teacher. His tests and quizzes are hard however he gives you plenty of resources and guidance to be able to handle them. He is very clear, very prepared for class, and his class makes learning natural because he incorporates a lot of science backed techniques for learning, like discussing things with your lab partner. His enthusiasm is awesome and VERY much appreciated at 8 AM.

Dr. Scott is one of my favorite professors at Cal Poly. He takes a subject that is very difficult and tries to simplify into terms that can be understood more easily. The quizzes and tests were fair and judged our knowledge of the material well, but you definitely need to take advantage of office hours, classwork, and mastery questions every single week if you want to do really well. He was super great because he actually interacted with the class and encouraged us to talk amongst ourselves to solve problems, instead of just lecturing in our faces. He genuinely seemed to care that we not only did well in the class but actually understood the material. HIGHLY recommend taking him for any chem class.

Dr. Scott is great! He loves his job and it clearly shows in his teaching. He gives weekly quizzes that are very straight forward if you do the practice problems he gives after each lecture. The practice problems range in difficulty but Dr. Scott is extremely helpful in office hours. Dr. Scott also has a way for you to check your answers on the practice problems so you know if you got the problem right or not. His midterms are difficult, but he gives you the opportunity to make up the points in a quiz given the next week. Dr. Scott requires a detailed lab notebook, but as long as you follow his guidelines it is easy to get a good grade. He also gives weekly lab quizzes which reflect the lab from the week before and prelab for the current week. The final was also difficult but at some point during the final you are able to have your scantron graded and then take it back and re-answer the problems you missed. This was extremely helpful to me and I was able to improve my grade. Another nice thing about Dr. Scott's class is that if you do better on your final than one of your midterms, your final grade replaces the midterm grade. Also if you go into office hours a lot and show you are serious about doing well in this class, then Dr. Scott will be more lenient about raising your grade at the end. I loved Dr. Scott's class and I would definitely take a class with him again if given the opportunity.

His first midterm was really hard, but he gave you the opportunity to get 14 points back! The second midterm was really fair and his quizzes are really easy if you are actively studying. Dr. Scott had a partially reversed classroom which is slightly different from most other professors I've had in the chemistry department. The class style was difficult at first but really helped me to learn the material. He had so many office hours and would come and sit with us as we worked on the homework and answer all of our questions. He would take the first 10 min of class to do a warm up/challenge problem and then clarify confusing problems during the rest of the class. You can tell he puts so much time into preparing his classes and really cares about his students.

Dr. Scott was a great Chem 127 teacher. He grades fairly with 2 midterms and a cumulative final, with a short quiz each week on that week's material. The tests and quizzes are challenging but you should know the answers if you paid attention in lecture and did the Mastery Questions he provides after each lecture (these are optional but highly recommended as they are very helpful). He also provides questions from the text if you need more help. He gives lots of example problems during lecture and seems honestly enthusiastic about the subject. His class isn't a walk in the park, you have to study, but he gives you the tools to do ok, so take him!

Dr. Scott is a great guy but not the best professor. This is his first year so he is still kind of experimenting with how to teach the class so I don't blame his for not teaching the material super well. What he doesn't do in class he makes up for with office hours. He is super approachable, accessible and has practice problem sessions. Also, he doesn't want to see anyone fail so he makes the lowest person's grade a C- (or so). Do the mastery questions, make him learn your name and show him you want to do well and you will do well!

Going into my first quarter as a freshman at Poly, I was nervous about this class because I couldn't find Dr. Scott on any professor rating websites. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Professor Scott is extremely enthusiastic about the subject material and his passion for chemistry is evident in his teaching. Even at 8am, he is always very energetic and excited to teach. The material is difficult, but if you take good notes (which is very easy if you basically copy down what Dr. Scott writes on the board word for word) and keep up on the reading, you'll do fine. There are weekly quizzes, which aren't too hard if you study a little. Also, do the mastery questions! They often carry over directly onto the quizzes. Dr. Scott doesn't curve individual grades, but he curves the overall grade at the end of the quarter. I wish he was teaching 128 so that I could have him again next quarter.

Dr. Scott is an incredibly brilliant professor, whom I thought was an excellent mentor. He's young and has a lot energy, so he is really easy to connect with. His homework is not collected, but the "Mastery Questions" are excellent ways to prepare for his tests, and are very close to exam material. He has 2 midterms and 1 final, and the second midterm tends to be a bit more rigorous. He also encourages class participation a lot, and gives out "Card Questions" at the end of every lecture. As far as the lectures go, the thing I noticed with him is that he teaches to those who already know some chemistry -and he talks fast, so occasionally certain concepts go without explanation. On the other hand, visit him during his office hours. I actually asked him for help on a topic which he went over too fast on. I told him that I felt rushed to learn that concept, and he spent 30 minutes with me making sure I understood it. In short, a very excellent professor if you want to learn general chemistry. Captain Planet!

If you hate chemistry, you'll hate this class. Pure and simple, even a great prof like Scott can't make it fascinating if you just have the course. If you do like chemistry, you'll enjoy him. Dr. Scott was a I great professor. I knew going into this class that I was going to struggle because I struggled in high-school chem. Dr. Scott gives you all the materials necessary to succeed in this class. He makes videos on many of the topics, and gives you links to Kahn Academy videos for the topics he doesn't cover in his videos. He also gives optional practice problems for every class. The problems usually take about an hour, so I recommend doing them after class and asking him questions about the problems you don't understand in office hours. He is a tremendous teacher in office hours, and is very good at clarifying things I was confused about during the lecture. He also does some pretty cool experiments during lecture and lab where he blows stuff up and sets things on fire. I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND TAKING DR. SCOTT! If you are willing to put in the work, he will make sure that you succeed.

Dr. Scott was a really great teacher, I had him for one of my first classes at Cal Poly. He seems really interested in the material, and does his absolute best to communicate it to his class. The tests weren't too difficult if you really buckled down and studied. I didn't go to his office hours much, but from other peoples' recommendations it seems like he's very helpful there. He uses a couple of online forums to communicate indirectly with the class on specific problems, which is a pretty cool touch. Overall, if you're willing to pay attention in class and really do the Mastery Questions he provides, you should pull away with a B. The labs are really well integrated into the lecture portion of the class, and while they can seem really intimidating when you're reading the procedure he's really good at guiding the class through it as you go.

This professor doesn't deserve such a poor rating. He's a great teacher, with some drawbacks. He's genuinely enthusiastic and does lots of awesome demos in class, which is always fun. His notes are really rushed though and often he doesn't show you how to approach the hard questions on his Mastery Questions. You will not learn enough in-class, you must go to office hours/email him questions. I took AP Chem before and I found it hard to get an A in this class. Dr. Scott really wants you to learn the material and is constantly making videos for examples he didn't have time to do in class and always posts links to other online videos about that lecture's topic. Everyone is complaining about Scott because his class requires you to do more than show up for lecture. If you do all the Mastery Questions, go to office hours for your questions, and look at the supplemental videos, you can get an A in this class. He gives three midterms which are all hard, but the final is pretty darn easy. It's all general question, and there's more than enough time to complete it. Overall, this guy is a great teacher, but the class requires that you do more than just show up. Be prepared to work.

Dr. Scott is a very good professor. My ONLY complaint is that he puts really hard conceptual questions on his tests, and his only piece of advice to help prepare for those is, "try making up and answering your own multiple choice questions" which really doesn't help because you can't anticipate the trickiness that will show up on the midterms. Other than that though, Dr. Scott is a great professor. Helpful in office hours, he's a very nice guy and does a good job keeping the lectures interesting. There wasn't anything I didn't understand throughout the course, but I ended up with a B+ instead of the A just because of his tricky multiple choice. He's a great professor though, and I would definitely recommend if you can't get Seth Bush or Gragson

Dr. Scott is one of those professors at Cal Poly that is absolutely terrible. I've taken Dr. Bush and their is no comparison. He's a very hard ass professor also. He deducts points in lab for just about anything. He's a smug little prick who's only claim to fame is he was a decent runner in high school, which he talks about constantly. He's a new teacher and has a very bad personality. He seems into what he's teaching while in class, but out of class he seems very apprehensive about having to teach such a low level chemistry course. I would recommend staying away from him like the plague. He's a very awkward little man who is sure to make your time in Chem 128 a lot harder than it needs to be. DR. SCOTT IS AN AMAZING PROFESSOR AND PERSON. The kid a few comments below is a joke. That tool obviously expects to skate through life with everything handed to him on a silver platter. I'd be willing to bet he put more effort into attempting to be clever in that poly rating than he did in the course. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking Dr. Scott. If you complete the Mastery Questions he provides and stay attentive in lecture, you'll do great. If you have any questions, he's extremely helpful in office hours and will never make you feel dumb for asking a question. I procrastinated in this class and deserved a C. The grade and knowledge you take away from Dr. Scott's class all depends on you. My one complaint is that he likes to show the class how to derive some of the equations we use in the course. Don't worry if you don't understand the derivations and there's no need to take notes on it, you won't be tested on it.

Dr Scott is amazing!!! Honestly I was so shocked when I read some of those comments below. He is very professional yet very understanding and I feel like he is just an amazing person all around. Chemistry is a hard subject to grasp sometimes but honestly if you work hard and put effort into it, you'll get back what you put in. He breaks up the reading into a section before each lecture which I belive is helpfull because it's segmented per class vs a "read this chapter this week-" orientated professor. He also gives the mastery questions after each class and I promise you if you keep on them you will succeed. Each quiz comes directly from the mastery questions so practice! If you havn't yet figured out that succeeding in college is actually doing the work. More on Dr. Scott- he's always available for office hours, and always willing to help if he's in his office after hours. I'd say he's a very reasonable grader- he focuses more that you understand the concept of what your trying to achieve (compared to professors who get nit picky about sig figs and small things), and he's a brilliant guy, and he'll aways try to explain things in a manner so that everyone understands it. I just like his style of teaching.. Dont hesitate to ask questions! Anyway, in my opinion Dr. Scott is one of the best chem teachers I've ever had and he's made a difficult subject fairly enjoyable for me. That's why I took him for 129! Whoop. You da man dr scott.

Professor Scott was an amazing Chemistry 128 professor. From the start of the class, he says that 128 is his favorite of the Gen Chem series and it shows. He knows his stuff and is very helpful and welcoming in office hours and is willing to help you step by step to solve difficult problems, but he doesn't tell you the answer-he makes you work for it. Dr. Scott knows his stuff to start off. Having him for three hrs straight is no joke, you are doing something during all these hours without even a 5 minute break. Usually classes should have a break when they are longer than two hrs, not here. Scott never collects homework, you are inspired to do his mastery questions which are about 30 questions times 2 for the the week. Pre Labs and lab reports hardly play a role in your grade, since only one or two are graded. There is two midterms, a final, and a quiz with two parts one dealing with class material and one lab related, where you can use your lab notebook (so make sure to write everything down) per week when theres no midterm. Overall he wants you to succeed, but his exams are way to hard even after studying all one can possibly do.

Dr. Scott isn't the greatest professor I've had at poly but he does try. He's a horrible lecture teacher, but makes up for it in office hours. Don't let these people fool you he's not a great teacher. A lot of people literally go to every office hour, and they kiss his ass. I know because I was one of them. He does these things called mastery question which are pretty well represented on his quizzes and tests. He will almost certainly put the harder questions on the quiz or tests. So going to office hours or having a friend who knows how to do those problems is a must. He really isn't that hard of a teacher, but you have to do the mastery questions to do well. They are almost word for word the same as on the quizzes and tests just with different numbers or slightly easier calculations. Since he's new he doesn't skip anything. He goes straight from the book and covers everything that is in the book. Most teachers skip parts that really aren't worth knowing, but he doesn't. I actually did read the book and found many of the exceptions are what he'll quiz you on. Wouldn't recommend him theres better teachers out there. But don't stress too bad if you get him. He presented the material very concisely and understandably and is extremely enthusiastic about chem. The workload isnt too bad either so long as you do the Mastery Questions he posts after every class. The harder questions on those problem sets show up on quizzes, and concepts from them show up on the multiple choice on tests. So long as you do all of them, midterms and quizzes are a breeze. He's pretty legit for a chem professor!

His tests and quizzes are fair and if you don't do well on the midterm the next quiz is all the test questions so make sure to do your corrections!!! The points go directly onto your exam. Chemistry doesn't click for me but Dr. Scott took his time with me and gave me my best chance at passing. (I got a D- with Zhang so I was retaking it with Scott.) I had Dr. Scott for Chem 129 last spring and its now a year later and I'm finding myself going back to the polylearn for his class to better my understanding for what I'm learning in my Ochem 3 class. Dr Scott was/is the best Chemistry professor I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. If you have the opportunity to take his class and you do not then you are really missing out.
