Patti is a cool person if you get to know her. She's very approachable if you relate to her on a person-to-person level instead of a student-to-teacher level. She definitely has her favorites, but if you participate, put in effort, and chat with her you can easily be one of her favorites. She doesn't do a good job teaching. She throws you right into the material and expects you to learn as you go. Overall, I like Patti because as long as she likes you, you'll probably do well.

No matter how strange this may sound for a journalism major, I really don't enjoy writing very much. I wasn't looking forward to a News Reporting & Writing class, but it was required. This was Patti's first time teaching this course, and she did a fantastic job. She made this class so enjoyable for me and was always extremely clear in what she wanted and was always there for us when we had questions. Walking into the first class I felt a little doomed, not being very confident in my writing skills and knowing that's all I'd be doing in this class for the whole quarter. Walking out on the last day, I felt completely different. Her advice, help and constructive criticism helped me transform from a shy unconfident writer who only knew how to write papers in an english essay style, to a confident, empowered writer that now knows how to ask the right questions in an interview, how to dig deep into a topic even if it doesn't spark your main interest, and how to write a story in a news story format. I worked hard in this class even though it's not exactly the path I want to take in journalism, and Patti helped me all the way through it. The only thing that was a little bit frustrating for all of us in the class was that she never really entered our grades on polylearn for the weekly quizzes or weekly class activities and even going into the final I didn't know what my grade on any of the stories were and we had done 3 by that point, and they were also worth 50% of our grade. If you go and ask her though, she can give you a rough estimate on where you stand in the class. I highly recommend Patti and if you get the choice to take her for 203, definitely take her.

If I wanted to pay to watch movies I would go to an actual movie theater. This class was such a joke. Patti was super bias and if you wanted to share an idea that was different than hers you would definitely feel judged. Also, she doesn't teach. She just puts movies on almost every class and your write about them. One time I asked for her understanding because I was going through a hard time and missed a few assignments. Instead of sympathizing she told me that I needed to "learn how to be responsible." She doesn't care about her students and I'm frustrated that I paid to take her bias class. If you do the work you'll get a good grade, but don't have high expectations for the lectures.

Patti was a fun teacher to have. The class was about racism, sexism, and the media and basically the entire class was a big discussion. She would bring up current and past issues in class and we would watch many documentaries and movie clips. At the start of the quarter she made it seem like there would be a quiz once a week, but there were only 3-4 quizzes in the whole quarter. She usually would not tell us when the quiz was, which was based off textbook reading, but they were toward the beginning of the quarter. The midterm was multiple choice and one EASY essay, you could just b.s. it. Patti gave out a review sheet, and using that and the quizzes, the midterm was word for word from the two. There was rarely homework but if there was it was EASY, aka sending images of racism/sexism in media today. Class attendance is a must because often times she would have you write 3-4 sentences on a film clip in class, etc, which is how she took attendance. Overall, I learned a lot from Patti, issues I may have not thought about before taking this class. She also tells personal life stories which are often times very funny! And you can brag that one of the local news anchors for the Central Coast is your professor! Go Patti! haha Take her!

The class was not too hard at all, and you get to know all of the other students in your class because of all of the active discussions. Give Piburn credit because the book is pretty lousy as explaining things and she is new at teaching the class, but she is plenty of fun and really nice! I would recommend her to people who don't even have to take the class!

Patti is so biased it hurts to hear it. Her class is easy, all you have to do is participate. As long as you think like she thinks and pretend to believe what she does you'll get a good grade. Just remember that if you are a white male you should write that you feel guilty for it to get decent grades on paper.

She's a decent teacher and class isn't too hard... but the verb is "affect", Patti, and the noun in "effect". She'll make these little errors every now and then and that'll bug you since she gets mad at every little error in class like when students glance away from the horribly boring black and white shows we watch in class

Patti is the greatest. She's a mom and you get that vibe whenever you have a conversation with her because she generally cares about her students! Take the time to get to know her. She's one of the reasons I enjoy the Journalism department so much

Patti is so nice and helpful. She forms relationships with her students and they remain even after the quarter ends. GREATEST OF ALL TIME

Patti is an absolute joke. People only take classes with her because she grades easily. She doesn't teach and she isn't very smart. She likes to talk about her personal life and complain about the new computer programs instead of teaching us new material. She only lectured TWICE the entire quarter. Usually we just sat there and had to watch videos for three hours. She treats the CPTV students with obvious favoritism and lets them do anything they want, even re-use old assignments for current class assignments.

Patti is a great professor to be teaching broadcast news. She has years of experience working in radio and it is 100% reflected in her lectures. Her experience is extensive and she knows broadcasting inside and out. Patti's ability to present the course material is clear, concise and very easy to listen to and understand. When the class goes over everyone's wraps, Patti is very helpful in offering constructive criticism, helping us to make our stories better. The NPR quizzes were extremely specific at points, so be sure to listen to them more than once (and takes notes). The final exam was online and multiple choice-- nothing too challenging, but you have to have done the reading. Before this class, I did not know anything about broadcast news, and leaving this class, I now have so much more knowledge under my belt.

I took Patti for JOUR 333 and 285. Taking 285 with her was stressful at times, but I understand how this class could be very stressful on her end too. Taking 333 with her was a lot more fun and enjoyable. I learned a lot and was really proud of my work by the end of the quarter. Patti is a really good teacher. She presented the material in a way that was easy to remember and interesting. The personal stories she would tell, and her humor, made going to class enjoyable. She has her favorites, and I wasn't one of them, but I still really, really enjoyed having her as a teacher. She made me like a major a lot more. If you have an opportunity to take her, do it!

DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR FOR JOUR 333 ONLINE. Super difficult and grades way more harshly than she should. Also incredibly disorganized and has three different due dates per assignment. If it was in person, I would recommend. DO NOT take it online.

Holy fuck. Do not take JOUR 333 online. After friends recommended this class (they took her in person), I enrolled in the online version. Piburn is away getting her masters in Arizona so she conducts this class in an online format. She fails terribly. Piburn is probably busy with her own shit so she never grades anything on time and she rips you apart on every little mistake you make even if it's your first mistake. Half of your grade is dependent on group work and if you're stuck with a shitty group like I was, you're literally fucked for the rest of the quarter. Piburn thinks you can't handle class work on your own or she's probably too lazy to grade individual work. Not only does she take decades to grade the work you do, she also leaves snarky and rude comments that don't really help you. You're required to go in for weekly newscast at KCPR which was pretty cool until you get the grades back for your script filled with red marks and "!!!!" Taking JOUR 333 online was probably the worst decision in my college career and I invested way too much time in this class for a mediocre grade. Take literally any other class.

Patti Piburn is one of the most closed-minded and incompetent people I have ever met. She has one way of doing things and will not consider other people's opinions. She has her favorites and treats everyone else like trash. I have taken three classes with her and she doesn't teach at all. She's a bitter and catty mean girl, who never mentally matured passed junior high. I do not recommend taking her-- try to avoid it at all costs. She is completely unprofessional, and perpetuates negativity and gossip in the newsroom and among students. Hostile learning environment, for sure.

I have taken four classes with Patti. I did not really appreciate her until I took journalism classes with a few other professors and I realized how much she cared about her job. I also think she's gotten better as a teacher progressively since I've had her. She's also gotten way better at grading our assignments in a timely fashion. Yes, she does have her favorites, but just get over it. I now really appreciate and value Patti as a teacher, because I never realize it at the time, but in hindsight, I always realize how much I learned how to do in her respective classes. Pro-tip: you and your classmates should give each other feedback on your wraps/ vo-sots/ scripts or whatever beforehand so you can catch each other's mistakes

Patti is one of my favorite journalism dept professors! I'm a recent graduate and still use everything I learned from her. She actually has real world experience and actually pepares you for a job in TV. you're gonna have to work, but you're gonna learn a lot more from Patti. She is one of the best parts of CP jour
