I only had him for lab, and as a lab instructor he was... alright. His notes at the start of lab were a bit disorganized, but he basically gives you the equations you'll need for calcs that day. Unfortunately, his lab quizzes are quite tricky, and really brought my grade down. You need a solid understanding of the methods from the previous lab as well as good notes from the prelab copied into your notebook. He tends to ding points on lab reports for silly little things, but he's helpful in office hours, and seems like a nice guy.

Dr. Heying is very knowledgeable about Chemistry but lacks enthusiasm or the ability to teach to students on a large scale level. He is helpful in office hours but during lecture part of lab he breezes through and is intimidating so no one is brave enough to tell him that we have no idea what is happening on the board. Often, students have trouble understanding concepts when he explains them because he makes it seem like its so easy that he cannot believe someone doesn't understand it. During office hours he does not seem to really care about the student but rather just answering a question as fast as he can. He has a negative tone when speaking to students. He does not take the time to make sure students comprehend what he is saying. He does not seem to genuinely care about his students and acts in a manner that is aloof and as if he does only the bare minimum for his job description. I've never met a professor with such a negative point of view at Cal Poly like Dr. Heying has.

What the guy/gal below said. Amen. I too took this class and have long since graduated from Poly, but I was cruising Poly Ratings for a kick and thought that I should pipe in and let you know how much of a joke this prof is.
