Dr. Hawthorne is an excellent professor. He lectures very well and clearly using many examples. His test are very fair and acurately protray what he lectured on and what he assigned as reading. the reading load is heavy, usually about 250 pgs per exam. be prepared to keep up in the course. overall i loved his class, it was very interesting and kept my attention

Dr Hawthorne is one of the nicest professors you will find at Poly. He is a very genuine and nice person (in and out of the classroom). His tests are half Multiple choice and half short answer. The good thing about his grading, is that he looks at progress throughout the class and makes a judgement call. Also, on his short answer portion of his tests, he gives you 6 questions, you have to do the first one, and then any other 4. If you have no idea what the hell he's talking about in the question, you can skip it. Hawthorne definietly knows his stuff. I recommend him.

Hawthorne is one of Cal Poly's finest!! I have nothing but good things to say about him and this class. Grading is based on three noncumulative exams. There are 25 mutiple choice scantron questions and 5 short answer questions per exam. The test material equally comes from both the book and the lecture. Hawthorne has a great lecture style that is supplemental to the text, interesting, and well organized. Hawthorne is also very approachable and always available to answer questions. Although there was a good deal of reading for this class, Hawthorne gives plenty of time to complete the assignments and thoroughly explains the material in class.

Dan Hawthorne was a very friendly and helpful professor. Class consisted of three midterms (the final was the third, none were comprehensive) that were 25 multiple choice questions and 5 short essays (6 questions, can drop any one). There was no homework other than a LOT of reading. Hawthorne's lectures could get a bit dry at times (most psychology seems kind of like common sense when you hear it), but the information was always very interesting and Dan was willing to go into futher detail and more examples when asked. I would definetly recommend any psychology class with Dan Hawthorne.

Hawthorne is a good professor. His lectures are very organized and supplemented with an outline on the board. My only complaint about his lectures is his slow and monotone speech. It kinda makes your sleepy. The book is well written but the chapters are insanely long. There are 3 tests each worth 50 points. The tests are difficult but he curves them. Other than reading and studying there are no out of class assignments. I would recommend Hawthorne for 252.

Hawthorne is an awesome teacher. He makes the material fairly easy to learn and presents it clearly and in an organized fashion. Class was interesting, most of the time, and we got out early a lot. There is a lot of reading, and the books aren't terribly interesting however there are a few study guide type things floating around campus that will make your reading considerably less if you can get your hands on one. We had 3 non-comprehensive midterms and one of them is the "final". Other than the reading, no outside work. Highly reccomend

Dr. Hawthorne is such a nice man. His lectures are kinda boring, but he is VERY organized and clear on what is important to know for the test. The textbook is cool -- long chapters (about 50 pages a week), but interesting because you can apply the stuff to your life. I would definitely recommend Hawthorne for any PSY class -- he cares about his students and just wants everyone to do well. He came in smiling every day and was never in a bad mood. Three midterms, no final, no papers. Just read the book and you'll do fine!!!

Dr. Hawthorne is an overall likeable character. Sure, his lectures can be boring at times, but for the most part they are interesting and always well prepared. Tests are kinda hard (and time consuming). But the class is worth it. Oh, and he uses a great text...the only problem is that it requires TONS of reading. And yes, you do have to read. Oh well.

I often felt that I would have used my time better if I didn't go to class. Hawthorne's lectures are fine, but the activities he uses to illustrate points he's trying to make use far too much time (sometimes the entire two hours)and often do a poor job of illustrating what he set out to. If I had to do it over again, I'd look to see if someone else is teaching this course or if Cuesta is offering it. Oh, there is no homework and 3 mid-terms

This was not the most exciting class but he does a good job giving us the information that we need to know. He is a fair grader and is very approachable. There is some outside work in this class (meeting with a "helpee" for mini counsling sessions) but it is not difficult. There also are 2 papers about your sessions and what you have learned throughout the qrt. I would take another class with him.

Dr. Hawthorne is very pleasant and very approachable. His lectures are easy to follow, and he uses very good examples to illustrate the concepts. The book was fairly easy to read.

Dr. Hawthorne is very mellow and approachable. His lectures can get a litte boring at times, but class activities spice it up a bit. Although he's very easy-going, watch out for his tests!!! They are pretty difficult, especially in Psy 329. As for Psy 351, your class experience heavily depends on the group you are assigned to (you'll be working on a group project all quarter). In Psy 351, you take the tests both individually and again with your group. The final for Psy 329 was very, very difficult.

Dr. Hawthorne is a very nice man and easy to talk to. However, his tests are horrible! Also, he could cut his lecture time in half and still get across the same information just as clearly. Class is boring, and you think the information is common sense, but he doesn't make it common sense when he tests you! Know every little detail, especially for the short answer section. You have to write 1 research paper, but you work on it throughout the quarter, so when it comes time to actually turn it in, it's pretty much done.

Dr. Hawthorne did a good job of explaining the material clearly (and it does get confusing). It is not the most exciting class as it is about research methods, however Dr. Hawthorne does a pretty good job of trying to make it interesting. Grades are based on three homework assignments (5% each) which are steps to creating a research proposal (25%), and two midterms (30% each). The tests are multiple choice and short essay and they are difficult. However, the class is graded on a curve. Overall, I would recommend Hawthorne for anyone who has to take this class.

Dr. Hawthorne is a great guy. He is very clear in his lectures, but sometimes they are dry. You work with a group which makes up a large part of your grade. This is fun and interesting but is a lot of work. His tests are fairly difficult and there is a large presentation at the end of the quarter. Overall Dr. Hawthorne is very fair and an enjoyable teacher but the 'group activities' (games that you play with your group) get a little old and the class is challenging.

This is the second class I've taken from Hawthorne. He is an excellent professor. He is a friend of the student and a fair grader. Be prepared for tons of group work in this class (duh!!). The two noncomprehensive midterms are taken first by yourself and then with your group. A scary thought for some...but it actually helps to increase the average of the individual ever time!! There is also a major research paper for the course. Hawthorne is very clear on what he expects and provides a great deal of class time to work on it. The rest of the points come from participation and a peer evaluation of a group presentation. A good class, a great professor, and an easy A.

Dan Hawthorne is a great Psychology teacher, and really cares about his students. Although his lectures may be a little long, and dry at times, the group activities make up for it. It is a fun class and easy if you attend his lectures.

His lectures are boring but you learn a lot about groups and how they perform together. If you study for the exams, you can get an A. The group project is easy if you work together and the paper is a group paper so it's easy too. It's a long class but make it fun and you can breeze through it.

Dr. Hawthorne is brilliant and very understanding.. he made this class a very entertaining and enlightening experience. You don't need to stress abt. his tests because they're easy as long as you read all the chapters and the paper is easy too.. He is by far my favorite psych. teacher @ Cal Poly.

Dr. Hawthorne is a nice guy, but very long-winded. Lectures that could have taken 20 minutes last for 2 hours. It's hard to be interactive at 8 in the morning! Also, the last project is huge and requires a really organized and motivated group. If you dont have that, you are screwed.

Dr. Hawthorne is a pretty good teacher, although he is incredibly long-winded. The group work counts for the majority of your grade and if you get stuck in an unmotivated group, it can be damaging to your grade. I would take Dr. Burn if I had the chance to do it over again, honestly. It was not too interesting.
