MATH 118

I took Math 118 with the infamous Kendall Rosales and I would advise that if you\'re reading this, you don\'t do the same. Class is a verbatim reading of the introduction of every chapter, followed by an editorial comment or two about her grad program. If you\'re looking for an education, or an easy interesting GE, this isn\'t your course. Her grading policies are simple, one long (roughly 50 problems) homework assignment every week, one quiz every week and two tests worth 20% of your grade, followed by a final worth 25%. Her homework is due at the start of every class (that\'s right, if you happen to be a minute late to class when she collects homework, it\'s officially late and marked down for only partial credit) Her office hours resemble a scene from the stock market. Roughly half the class will attend the alloted 4 office hours a week, asking hundreds of questions that ensue in chaos. She pretty much appoints a student who seems to understand the material to start answering other questions his or her peers may have. She idly attempts to help the other hordes of students asking questions, but falls short of helping you with more than two questions. Her tests are barely related to the homework. You may find a glimpse of a concept or an idea that was presented in your homework on the exams. However the over-all question is a combination of concepts she presented in class, and emails that she has submitted the night before. An example would be, learning how to build the wing of a plane on one day, and the engine the next, where the following day is a test about how to construct a plane all-together. If you\'ve taken Calc before, this class should be entirely review (just look at the book before you sign up) but if you haven\'t, this is no place to start. I am a graduating senior with a 3.2 GPA, in my career at Cal Poly I haven\'t failed a single class, let alone encountered a more inexperienced professor. Some grad students can imitate the best professors on campus and others should to stick to learning, not teaching.

I was a little worried when I saw that I had another Grad student teaching the class, but Kendall turned out to be a great teacher. I have trouble with all math but she presented it pretty clearly in class with a lot of examples which helped me out. When you dont understand something or a have a homework questions she is really good about responding to your emails or making time to meet with you. There is a fair amount of homework but for someone like me who isnt strong in math the practice is necessary and definately worth doing, plus, you have a week to turn it in. We had a quiz once a week but if you did the homework for that week you will do fine on the quiz. I would recommend Kendall if you need a teacher who doesnt expect you to know calculus already and if you are willing to put the effort in to do the homework.

This class is pretty straight forward. You can easily pass the class if you do the homework and show up for the quizzes which are pretty much a homework problem. The tests are fair but challenging and test your knowledge of both the basic concepts and then their are questions that require you to put the basic concepts together to get a more complex solution. Overall she taught the class well and if you pay attention you should pass with nothing less than a C.

Kendall Rosales is an awesome precalc teacher. I have never done a poly rating before (and this was my last quarter at poly), but i felt like i had to do some justice by sharing with you guys about kendall and her teaching. Kendall is very knowledgeable, prepared, fair, and VERY approachable. She presents the material in a very clear, and straightforward way. Math is generally a dificult subject for me, but Kendall was always very open to all of my questions and did an excellent job of answering all of them. She makes sure that you get all of the help you need- she is great with answering emails and she went out of her way to make sure I could get help outside of class time (by setting up appointments if i couldnt make it to office hours). The class is comprised of ten hw assignments (one due each week), 7 quizes, two midterms, and a final. This class can be easy if you're a math person and went beyond precalc in high school, or it can be challenging. For me, the subject matter was more on the challenging side because i hadnt taken precal since high school (which for me, was 4 years ago!). However, Kendall did an excellent job of working with all of us and didnt assume that we had extensive math background (which i certainly did not!). Overall, Kendall did an excellent job with this class. Just be willing to put in the time to do the homework and go to office hours (if need be). I would consider myself to be lacking in the math department, but I was still able to get an A- in this class....i worked really hard, but it shows that if you put the time in, you can do well too :)

If you can, choose another teacher for this MATH118 class. The tests are very challenging, and the quizzes and homework are average. She grades with great detail on everything and does not lecture effectively. In the end, you will be better off with a math teacher (not grad student) that will make the learning easy and most likely receive a better grad.

I liked Kendall. Yea shes a grad student and she could use some work with her lecturing style, but shes also really nice and is willing to put in the time to help you understand stuff. I've never been a math kid (libarts for life! WOO!) but I found that as long as I did the homework each week, the quizes and tests were manageable. It's really not a stressful class at all.

LOVED HER! I got over 100% on the midterms and final (the extra credit is often just drawing a picture). SHe is so excited about math that you start to love it. She is so approachable and lovely that you are never scared to ask a question or go to office hours. Pay attention in class and be engaged~ she really likes when people participate and it keeps you engaged. Overall one of my favorite teachers. Makes you like math :)

Really great teacher. Does everything she can to help students who are having problems and is pretty enthusiastic about math. Some classes were funny when she would get super worked up and excited about one thing that she's teaching.

Kendall was really enthusiastic about math. She loves the subject and loves teaching it, but isn't the best at teaching it. She's working her way towards becoming a teacher and saw her improving throughout the quarter, hopefully next year she's better!

My experience with Kendall was a difficult one. While she is incredibly nice, enthusiastic, and helpful, her teaching style can be hard to comprehend. Her lectures were straightforward however I found that while her examples in class corresponded to the first half of the homework, the second half was completely beyond her lectures and I found myself rereading the chapters of the book and getting a tutor just in order to finish the homework on time. The homework itself took on average 6-7 hours a week. Midterms and final were difficult to say the least. She was always willing to go the extra mile during her office hours and is very patient with her students but she isn't always clear in her explanations and many times I ended up more confused than when I had arrived. If you're a quick learner or have taken calc before, take her as some of the kids who sat around me breezed through the class because they had taken the material before. One kid literally only showed up for the first three lectures, both midterms, and the final and ended up with an A (he told me a couple weeks later). If you suck at math like me, find someone a little more experienced.
