Hartig-Ferrer had her own little favorites in the class (all girls). She was absolutely rude to her students and could give a damn ablut anything. Horrible woman and teacher. Hard to believe that I was one of her favorites too.

This woman is crazy! Everyday she rushed into class frantic and unprepared, demanding respect from her students like they were in elementary or high school. (No gum, no hats, no food, no talking!) She spent half the class enforcing us to write dictations, little essays and oral questions, and then crammed in her lecture about the Spanish language in the last 15 minutes of class up until the very last second (forcing me to miss the bus a few times). She assigned lots of busy work every night and called on people randomly to answer questions. Her tests were hard and prolific to study for, in addition to essays we had to write the day after the test. The lab is worth only 1% of your grade (so no one went) and the workbook is worth 3% (but you have to mark your errors in RED pen). She takes it really personal if you're late or absent. Overall, she has very unrealistic expectations for a Spanish 101 class, but she forced me to pay attention and I learned a lot. Take her if you dare.

She is a very nice teacher. It was great to get a look at Spain Spanish (because it is different). The book is really useful and as long as you take 15 minutes each night to go over the exercises you will do ALOT better. Some people say she was a control freak but the only time she got angry is when people were constantly talking...( i say fair enough). She does get frustrated when only 2 people looked over the homework though (its always really short and never written and she loves you if you do it). The tests are pretty cool because they are right from the material and really straight forward. I thought she was a good teacher and did a very good job.

Hartig-Ferrer is not an easy professor, but if you really want to learn the material she is great. Her homework assignments are relevant and she understands how a person learns a second language (she speaks four or five herself). She is able to explain concepts with clarity and challenges you to study and think for yourself. Some don't like her aggresive style of teaching, but she's just trying to get you to learn. If you want to actually learn Spanish, take Hartig-Ferrer. If you don't and you just want credit for the class, take someone else.

I thought it was a little ridiculous for the professor to speak all Spanish in a Spanish 102 class, but maybe all the teachers do that. She was pretty nice and personable, and there were many possible points in the class to make up for something that you did bad on. Overall, I didn't enjoy the class, but I was happy to get a B.

I learned a lot during this class. She can seem intimidating at first, but seems to really care about each student\'s progress. If you can, go to her office hours or stay after class to ask for help. She really does her best to explain any questions you may have. She loves students who interact with her during class and are consistently at class and on-time. The tests aren\'t difficult- just pay attention in class and review the grammar, vocab, and culture beforehand. She will take points off if you miss class frequently or on certain days. Overall, a good professor.

She is a very sweet and funny lady and wants the class to be fun and lively. The only problem is that she is not very organized. Basically every class you just review the homework and that is how you learn. If i didn't have a pretty good understanding of what we were learning beforehand I probably would have really struggled. She expects you to speak a lot in class and if you don't speak she will pick you to speak. She grades pretty fairly and the work is not too hard. She is an okay teacher as long as Spanish is not hard for you you'll be fine. She is a pretty cool person though.

Incredibly sassy in the best kind of way. She definitely knows the language and the grammar as it is her first language. Homework everyday, not horrible or too long. Class is entertaining, despite being at 8am. She loves to crack jokes, forget names, and talk about current events. Such an inspiring and lovely person and REALLY COOL professor. Willing to work with you, even calls you into her office to discuss mistakes on homework/quizzes/tests. The only lame part of this class is that she makes you go on field trips and write papers on them, which is kinda hard. Also she has in class writing assignments which can be challenging as well. Overall, she's super cool and a good professor.

This instructor is abrasive and strict. She demands absolute attention and no talking in the classroom, not an unreasonable expectation. While she demands absolute respect for herself, she does not seem to accord that respect back to the students. I felt as if I were still in high school, not being treated as an adult. She does not seem to have much instinct on evaluating the progress of the class as a whole. At many times the class felt lost, but she didn't seem to notice. From what I could perceive from the rest of the class, no one was very happy with her.

Dr. H.F. is one of the best professors Poly has to offer. Not only is she well-versed in her subject and imparts her knowledge to her students, she truly cares about the success of anyone who is trying. She worked with me on several occassions and would not let me fail. I passed with a higher grade than I expected. I would recommend her to anyone who is struggling in Spanish. She is not the easiest teacher to have, but she is by far one of the fairest-if you are sincerely trying.

You will learn a lot of Spanish in her class. I feel like I learned more in one quarter with her than I did in the three years of high school Spanish and two quarters of Cal Poly Spanish I took before her combined. You are required to participate and will probably embarrass yourself a couple of times trying to speak Spanish in front of the class. Oh well. She's a fair grader and you get a lot of easy homework points and extra credit points. Go to class (she's funny so it's not too bad) and do your homework. You'll do fine.

Ana is a great lady, however, the way she presents the material in class is rather confusing. She really REALLY wants all of her students to succeed & will take special time to help you if you are having issues, but sometimes that still doesn't provide much clarity. If you take her, expect homework EVERY NIGHT, tests that are fairly straight forward, & a very entertaining prof. Not a bad class altogether, but definitely not my favorite.

Professor Hartig-Ferrer was awesome! Sure, she can be tough, but she is still very straigt forward. However, there is a lot of oral in her class. Her tests (there are 2) are basically her asking you things in Spanish, and you have to write the answers. But it's pretty easy, because she practically tells you what she is going to ask and what to study for the test. She knows her grammar really well, and can be funny too. You have to write three essays in her class, go to lab for listening exercises, and the final is just like the regualr tests. She's open to students who are having trouble in her class, and when you're learning a language, that's really helpful. She doesn't let you slide though. So, if you're willing to work, Hartig-Ferrer is the right choice because you'll come out of her class actually knowing the language.

I really enjoyed her class. It is not like you don't have to study for the class, she is rather demanding. But she presents the stuff in a very humerous, exciting and interesting way, and you never have the feeling that you can't handle it. She gives interesting presentations about the culture in different countries, and then you have to write about it. She really teaches you what you need to know. You could probably describe her as "a few fries short of a happy meal." She was pretty scatter-brained. I took three years of spanish in high school, so I figured I was prepared for this class. I did alright. The biggest problem I had (and most students who took spanish in high school will probably have the same problem) was that because she's from Spain, she has more of a Castilian accent. I had a hard time understanding her because of this. Also, I never learned the vostros tense in high school spanish because we live in the US, near Mexico, and Mexican spanish doesn't use vosotros. Her tests often included this tense, so I didn't always do so well on those parts. Other than that, I did well on the tests. You'll want to make sure you do the homework, but often, it's hard to know which homework to do. If you had at least three years of spanish in high school, you should be successful in this class. Otherwise, take another spanish course because this one definitely isn't for beginners.

Anna is from Barcelona, so I was thrilled to have her teach my class. Her Spanish is perfect and she has a lovely Catalan accent. She is on the older side, so that made for some forgetfulness and slip ups in class but nothing majorly distracting. She is a very fair grader, is clear on her expectations, and demands quality work from her students. Every week there are 2 homework assignments straight out of the book (the loose leaf packet you buy in El Corral) that are pretty easy and straight forward and about 10 exercises long. There is an exam at the end of every chapter, and we only cover up to chapter 4. For the exams definitely pay attention to the vocab in the chapter, you usually have to define a random handful of these words as part of the test. Every now and again we write in class/take home essays, and 2ish field trip essays, so if you don't like to write this may be a challenge. The final is cumulative but really easy, there is also an oral component that requires you to speak with her one-on-one in her office for 10 minutes. TL;DR: There is a lot of writing, but she's a knowledgeable and fair professor. Also she saves you money by only making you buy ONE of the textbooks required for Poly Spanish courses. I would take her again.

Hartig-Ferrer, presents things clearly. She often assigns homework which is not collected, but can be useful. the assignments in the lab manual are very easy, but time conusming and redundant. The listening lab is pointless, and is due every week just about. Her tests are simple, as long as you remember to put the accent marks in the right places. Ana is a very nice lady, is funny, and knows her spanish having grown up in Spain. But is not always reasonable when it comes to dealing with her students needs. Just an example is that she emails all of the homework to her students because she feels as though it takes too much time to give the assignment during class. Sometimes those emails would not be received until 10 pm or later and when asked to email them earlier she goes off on a tangent about how students should learn to get less sleep at night. Anyway the class itself is fairly easy and you will learn. Your grade is made up of multiple assignments: homework every nights, chapter tests, essays, and even extra credit. I would recommend the class but stay on top of what needs to get done.

Sra. Hartig-Ferrer is a ridiculous woman. She is hillarious and keeps the class moving with her Spanish humor. I had her for 121 which was so easy I didn't even have to take the final, but 124 is a different story. This class is worse than an English writing class. I have turned in a paper in Spanish every time every T/R since the beginning of the quarter. There is no structure to the class, I seriously think she comes up with assignments in her head at the end and half of the time she never collects the papers. There was a syllabus, but she has never followed it and originally she said we would write 5 papers for the class, but at this point I think it has been more like 15. Do yourself an favor and don't take it unless you have to...in the event that you do have to, don't buy the book because it is worthless and doesn't help at all. Spanish 124 was not an enjoyable course for me. Hartig-Ferrer is a good lecturer, but has her shortcomings as would anybody. The curriculum is what made this class bad, not the professor. I came into this course expecting to be writing more than I did. The homework consisted of answering dumb questions, and doing exercises about stupid excerpts that where in the text, which even Hartig-Ferrer hated. fortunately Hartig-Ferrer assigned major essays and compositions which helped us develop our abilities of writing in Spanish. Hartig-Ferrer is opinionated and stubborn at times, but was a very capable instructor. I have no problems with her, but I hated going to Spanish 124.

This was a very easy course! The first three quarters of the course is based on grammar and vocabulary from a textbook. The daily homework she assigns is almost never due or graded, except for mini composiciones which are usually around 300 words and are assigned about once a week. There are also 2 \"trabajo de campos,\" where you visit a place and write about it. The tests are completely manageable and require basic understanding, with portions of listening/response, defining spanish words and terms, and writing. The last quarter of the course is solely based on a famous Spanish novel, El Coronel no Tiene quien le escriba. Due to a time shortage and the difficulty of the book for our class, we were only responsible for reading 4 chapters of the book on our own. Each week we covered one of those chapters, and each day we discussed a different aspect of the chapter we read. The following week a packet for the chapter was due. The final was only on \"El Coronel,\" with short responses and one very long response. ***Class Tip: Participate as much as possible!! She falls in love with the people who sit in front and contribute a lot, even if they aren\'t strong Spanish speakers.

Awful. I came into this class expecting to do well (I had just gotten an A in SPAN 122, and had taken four years of Spanish in high school, plus she knew my high school Spanish teacher personally, so I thought that might work in my favor). And for a while, I was doing well. When I got my papers back, I got good scores on them. Then, about halfway through the quarter, she stopped giving my papers back to me, so I lost track of how I was doing in the class. Admittedly, I turned a couple of the assignments in a little late, and one of the assignments I apparently did wrong because she did not make it clear at all what she wanted it to be about (to this day I STILL don\'t know what the problem was with my paper--AGAIN, BECAUSE I NEVER SAW IT AGAIN), but I turned in all assignments and did all of my work at a good level of quality. Allowing for my mistakes, I thought maybe I\'d get out of the class with a C. At the end of the quarter, much to my surprise, I had failed the class. I emailed her to ask for some kind of explanation as to what had happened (since I had no way of knowing what was going on because my assignments stopped coming back to me), and I got a very terse response stating that my grade \"was less than 50 percent of the total points.\" Well, I could have figured THAT out by looking at my quarter grades; thanks very much for the thoughtful explanation. I felt like challenging it, since she provided absolutely no evidence regarding my performance in the class (i.e.; no low-scored graded work--all the work I had received back had high scores on it). In retrospect, maybe I should have. But oh well. This was a few years ago--I don\'t even know if she teaches at Cal Poly any more. But if she does, well, that\'s unfortunate for Cal Poly.

Let me just preface this with the fact that I have an anxiety disorder. Every damn day in class I was overwhelmed by anxiety, up until the very last day and final interview. Senora is not a constructive teacher, she is absolutely de-constructive in nature. Sure by the end of the class you get to know her and find her funny and whatnot... but damn. She can be insulting, offensive, rude, defiant, etc. You have homework every night of which is emailed to you around 3-4pm. Due in class the next day, typed and prepared if there is an oral segment. Test every other week, varies in difficulty and instructions are not always clear (she gave us one exam where she asked us to figure out what she was asking when she didn't provide the instructions because it would show her who is still chicken...). The day after the exam the entire period is devoted to an in class essay. BRING A FUCKING DICTIONARY AND ALL OF YOUR NOTES. I swear those are what saved me. One out of class project, no midterm, and the final is a private 15 minute interview. Senora is just incredibly harsh. She has a history of making students cry due to her criticism... 2 girls in my class this quarter. She has what I call the "Barcelona bitchiness". I honestly wouldn't say it's intentional, but it was definitely hard to handle.. especially being one that struggles with anxiety. What got me most is when she walks around during our test, peers over your shoulder and will even grab your paper and look at it making judgmental facial expressions IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR EFFING TEST. Like man, it was hard. I am thankful this is my last Spanish course at Poly, I really don't see it as beneficial to my major and I wish the professors would come together and unify their curriculum and teaching methods so it isn't such a hard transition from professor to professor. If there's another professor option, I would probably avoid taking Senora. I got a B, but still...

I got an A in the class, so please understand that this is not just me bitching because she gave me a bad grade. I did well in the class. But Sra. Hartig-Ferrer is an incredibly harsh woman who is generally unpleasant to learn under. She called me stupid on the second day of class for asking a simple question and then went on a rant that made me cry. Obviously you might have tougher skin than me, but the fact that she makes even SOME of her students feel this way (and I know for a fact it has happened to others) is completely unacceptable. Sra. Hartig genuinely wants you to learn, but gets angry if it's not as quickly or cleanly as she expects. Like I said, I did well in the class, so as she got to know me she was nicer to me, but it is still unacceptable for a professor to be downright mean to her students. Take that as you will.

OK. HOLY SHIT. I have NEVER felt so strongly about a professor. I took this class my very first quarter at Cal Poly. I took Spanish in high school and was very good at it. I'm not trying to sound overly-confident by any means, but I was damn near fluent after high school because it came naturally to me. I came to this class after taking a year off of Spanish, so yes, I was a little rusty, but not C- rusty. She told me on the first day that, because I was a first-year, I "shouldn't be in the class because it would be too hard" for me. She tried to convince me to drop for literally 2 weeks. I only got a C- in the class because Hartig-Ferrer plays favorites. If you talk a lot in class or you just ~vibe~ with her well, you're going to do great in the class. If you're like me and don't talk very much and don't vibe well with her, you're going to do badly. She grades horribly subjectively. I would do everything 100% right in terms of vocabulary and grammar on assignments, and she would grade me down because she didn't like an adjective I used, or something to that effect. Her tests were not standardized, and she graded on a ridiculously subjective scale. Also, she sent out emails "detailing" the homework, but they often made no sense because she would mix Spanish and English, and write words in English that didn't make sense (not blaming her in this regard because Spanish is her first language, I get it, but she would get mad at us for not understanding). She also MAKES you go into office hours for tests. You have to speak to her and recite detailed passages in Spanish in her office. If she doesn't like your answers, you get a bad grade, even if they were perfectly grammatically correct and answered her question. All-in-all, I would not take this professor. I was so excited about taking Spanish again and she just KILLED my desire to venture further with it.

Ana is by far the best Spanish professor I've ever had. I think the only reason she gets bad reviews on here is because she makes everyone actually speak Spanish in front of the class and that can be intimidating, but it makes you actually learn TO SPEAK SPANISH. She gives daily homework but its never super hard as long as you pay attention in class. Tests are really straightforward and just like class materials, and she usually requires students to speak with her one on one as part of the evaluation. As long as you put in an average amount of effort, this class is a breeze. She's a little crazy but she just really wants everyone to be engaged and ACTUALLY LEARN SPANISH

She does speak 90% Spanish in class and forces everyone to speak in front of the class everyday to get participation points. She makes jokes and sometimes will laugh at you after a mistake but it is sweet. The class is a lot of work because of the daily homework. Daily homework needs to be PRINTED DOUBLE SPACED that takes about 20 minutes to do. She grades the homework harshly with 2 or so mistakes being an 8/10 or 7/10. She grades with little to no rubric and kind of making them up as she went. The exams were really easy but the compositions are graded harshly with everyone getting a B. She keeps all the grades on a binder and never puts them in PolyLearn so we did not know what grade we had until the very end. Overall, very kind and sweet. She assigns homework every night through email and it always has grammatical errors and typos. Considering this is a Spanish class (and not an upper-division) she could at least look over her assignments to make sure it's easy to read and understand. She is rude and blunt and will call on people and berate them for 15 minutes if their grammar is incorrect or missing something. Also what drives me crazy is she will interrupt you in the middle of answering a question, she will not let you finish!!! She also expects you to stay in class until she is done; this hasn't been much of an issue for me because I don't have class after, but she takes it personally if someone just leaves at the hour. Her directions on many assignments are just unclear and make you memorize the most meaningless stuff. Half of our class including myself are native speakers and half the time the stories she chooses (also her directions) are hard to read because its old Spanish. I highly do not recommend taking her for SPAN 233.

Ms. Hartig-Ferrer is a very dinamic individual who comes to class expecting each student to participate and have done the homework and understood it. Sometimes her directions on the assignments are very confusing and the whole class would do it incorrectly and then we would have to repeat it. But as a lecturer she is facinating and obviously knows her stuff. We had a journal, reading and 4 essays. The very typical description, narration, exposition and argumentative. We were allowed to pick our topics on the first three and the 4th, she had us read YERMA, the poetic play by Frederico Garcia-Lorca and decide whether Yerma was excusable or not in murdering her husband. Half the class for each side, so some were assigned a side. That play was hard to read, not so much because of vocabulary, which did prove challenging, but all the symbolic meanings and unsaid hints, music and poetry. The first part of the class was very easy, but that last essay caused major grief for many students. Attendance is sometimes graded and sometimes not. There are also in-class writes that are usually unannounced. I would recommend this teacher to anyone willing to work hard and wanting to learn the language and culture. Just be sure to go to office hours, as the assignments are often unclear at first.

Ana can be really intimidating at first but is actually pretty chill. Just stick to your guns and call her out when she's being ridiculous and she'll respect you for it. (She's from Spain and doesn't always understand things the way the rest of the class does) She likes to joke around but you still learn a lot. Go to her office hours if you need help, she's a real legit teacher/person
