There\'s not much to this course - he just goes over the power points for the different plant species to study and he points out helpful identifying tips that aren\'t included on the power point. Wally was helpful, though, because he told you what was going to be on the test and what the format was going to be. A lot of the work is individual study. One cool thing about this class though (when dr. mark teaches, anyway) is that he does not expect you to study the common names of the species or of the family. I thought Wally was a great teacher because he had realistic expectations and tried to help you as much as possible. He usually stays after class to allow people to look at the plants and helps answer questions. Again, there is a lot of memorization expected from this class, but Wally was a great teacher.

Straight forward class. He gives you useful tips for identifying the plants tested on, it comes down to memorization and studying on your part. Made a long morning class bearable with his sense of humor and often let us out a few hours early. I heard this class was a nightmare, but it was honestly pretty enjoyable with Mark.

This is a review of Wally's final quarter teaching at Cal Poly. TBH he didn't really have to do much for 208 since the only thing you do for that class is memorize plant characteristics. And make a plant collection. If you like dry/sarcastic wit, a no-bullshit attitude, and tangentially related anecdotes that are almost entirely irrelevant but at the same time fascinating, Wally was the man. He knew a lot about trees. I once got poison oak that blistered, and pus was leaking out of my arm, and he made fun of me for wanting to go to the health center.

awesome teacher, advisor, and friend. clear expectations, no favorites, understanding, hilarious, fair examinations, and one of the few semi-retired NRM staff that hasn't lost his marbles or sense of humor.

Wally is the coolest professor in the NR department. He gets to know students on a first name basis and makes attending class not so painful. The material is difficult but he provides a lot of information and is very good at answering questions and helping. Start memorizing the glossary terms early on pay attention in lecture because the cumulative final is all scenario questions and asks for your opinion. Overall a fun course and I'd recommend taking Wally for anything you can

First of all, his class is incredibly difficult. He teaches at an impressively level of conceptual rigor and detail. You should expect to study your ass off, with particular focus on what Walter says is important to know in lectures. If you are studying for his class, it is helpful to create tables that compare differences for whatever subtopic you are focusing on. His lectures are designed to toss as much material as he can manage at you (I overheard him saying that he modified his lectures from the past so he can cram more material in) and you should expect to spend a lot of time studying outside of his class. Rather than grinding concepts into your head, his style is more like rapid fire of huge volumes of information.
