This was Kines 350 (Sport and Gender) for a degree program through Continuing Education, but polyratings only recognizea 323. I have no sports background and for the first few weeks felt at a disadvantage but this instructor bridged the gap for me and other studends. She's sharp and knows how to make a subject interesting and entertaining. Some of the material was sensitive and she deftly handled the topics smoothly. The class (Sport and Gender) was challenging for anyone who is a social conservative, but that's not a reflection on the instructor. Weekly reading material that consisted of .PDF files on blackboard was insane in volume and really not necessary for understanding the subject---not with 2 textbooks. The midterm covered 25% of one textbook, the introduction and 3 chapters of the other textbook (which was 5 chapters in all), plus a stack of .PDF files (printed off blackboard) that was 1-3/4 inches thick. Plus all the PowerPoint Presentations. After the midterm the class seemed to click for everyone and the professor did a fantastic job. Tests: there was one mid-term exam (matching, multiple choice, true/false/guess and essay) and the final exam (same format). Exams were precise but fair. There are 2 student Power Point Presentations, 2 reflection papers, and an extra credit assignment. It was not a class I would recommend to anyone, however, the instructor was great. She was fair minded, knowledgeable, and graded fairly. For example, on the mid-term most missed one question so she threw it out, but if you earned points on that question you got to keep those points. No complaints for the instructor. Sport and Gender as a class I can not recommend due to onerous, ridiculously excessive reading material, but this instructor earned excellent ratings.

STAY AWAY! I took KINE 323 online over the summer (first time this class has been done online) and I can honestly say it was one of the worst courses I have ever taken at Cal Poly! The amount of reading was INSANE, we had to read over 1,200 pages of the driest material, most of which was repetitive or not needed to understand the concepts we were learning. The forums were relatively easy points, but the midterm and final covered material that was not a main focus of the course. For example, she asked us to define a term/concept and give an example in one of the short answer questions that had only been covered ONE TIME in the 1,200+ pages of reading. I expected her to ask questions about major topics/concepts we had talked in-depth about, but apparently she likes asking questions that nobody knows the answers to. I spent more time and effort in this GE course than I have in any of my major courses doing BS busywork. I recommend finding another course to satisfy your GE.

Wow, I have NEVER taken a college level course that reminded me so much of highschool! I highly recommend NOT TAKING THIS COURSE at all costs. Basically the online course consisted each week of over 200 pages of text and PDF reading a week, 2 hour long videos, a quiz, 2 forum responses (esentially 2 essays). The information was not only extreamly repetative but also completely overlooked the scientific theory and placed persona opinions as more factual than empirical evidence. READ THAT SENTENCE AGAIN, we are at one of the world's leading technical universities and we have a professor that disregards science and empirical evidence!! Dr. Hagobian does not like conflicting opinions, so if ou want to stay under the radar, kiss ass. Lastly, if you are a white male who has always treated women as equals, this course will convince you that since you are a man you are inheritanly doing wrong. Dr. Hagobian in 1 word = hippocrate.

Class was basically about whether or not you could keep up on the RIDICULOUS amount of reading that you would only need to know tiny irrelevant details of for the tests/quizzes. I took the class online, which I understand made homework amount increase but between the online interactive textbook, another text, random poly learn readings, and multiple 30-60 minutes videos per week it was alot. And most of the time youd read some of them and find that you werent tested on anything in them which was frustrating with the amount of time put into reading, reading, and more reading. He video lecture videos were helpful in outlining important info but most of the time the videos went on and on just because she goes off on random irrelevant ideas or examples. Wasnt horrible class just was boring and very time consuming for a GE (especially when you have classes like OCHEM to be working on instead).

This professor seriously needs some help in conducting an online course. There is more work in this class than anything i've ever experienced at cal poly. Quizzes impossible all answers basically the same. Forums that will take you forever, which she grades harder than an upper division english professor would. The class is called Sport and Gender but it might as well be called "Femininity and Gender" Avoid this class at all costs. Waste of time, energy, and money.

Okay first off, I took KINE 323 because I had (WRONGLY) heard it was an online, easy A, to fulfill D5 (I believe? D something). THIS IS NOT THE CASE. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I MADE A MISTAKE. Even though I got an A, I would never do this again. This bullshit GE should be an 8 unit class, I spent so much time on it. The best thing I have to say about it is that I do feel I understand some societal issues better, and could talk about them without sounding like an ignorant idiot. However, most of the course is doing weekly "forums", which entail writing usually a full page on some topic. These had to be super biased toward the professor's obviously stated opinions if you want to do well. Lastly, if you take it, she lets you opt for a video project instead of a final exam, which you should absolutely do. I spent SO LONG studying for the first midterm and only got an 86%. I spent a few days over thanksgiving break doing the video, and got 100%.

Horrible class! I understand that this class is online and requires more material, but it was way too much for a GE. The assignments are all due at 10 PM which is unheard of. I have never had assignments due at this time and it makes things extremely difficult. I would not recommend this class to anyone. It is extremely time consuming and EXPENSIVE because of the online textbook and program you are required to buy.

Of all of the courses I've taken at cal poly, this is easily the worst. The exams were completely unfair and frankly fucked up. She expects you to essentially memorize 1000+ pages and pulls specific ideas and quotes from the middle of these that there is no way that anyone could possibly remember. I have taken some of the hardest Calc based Econ courses at Cal Poly and would literally take another one of those before I took this class again. I did all readings and watched ever video, studied for 10+ hours before each exam and still felt like nicole bent me over a table by the time I finished. Dont take this shit.

This class was pretty chill. Nothing to hard if you go to class. Three 3-page essays, a midterm, and a group project that you get time to work on every Friday for almost the whole quarter. Our group practically finished ours the first week and then didn’t have to do anything but a powerpoint at the end. I didn’t take the final since I already had credit, but I assume it couldn’t have been any different from the midterm, which was just a bunch of short answer questions that if you went to class you would have no problems with.

Let me save you now... DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! Nicole thinks everyone in the class is dying to learn about sociology in sport and is interested in this subject. KINE majors are not even allowed to take this class so everyone in the class is just trying to get their D5 credit but she takes the class to a whole new level. She expects waaaaay too much from here students and you will spend hours on this class just trying to get credit. Class consists of 4 quiz's, 2- 1 page discussion board topics, midterm, final, group analysis project, and 10 page research paper. I'm telling you now if your looking for an easy class to get your D5 credit, this is not the one!!!

Professor Hagobian was a cool teacher who expected a lot more than the average professor of a D5 class. I think the name of this class should definitely be changed to Sociology of Sport because that's all it was. If you read and show up to class, you'll do just fine. There is, however, a lot of work in this class. A 9-12 pg research paper, 2 other written assignments, a group project, midterm, final and 5 quizzes. It wasn't very difficult, but again, just a lot of work for your typical D5 class. If you're looking for easy, don't take this class. Hagobian is very nice and tries her best with the content.

This class was somewhat tedious to me. I took it CR/NC, so I intentionally chose to be a lazy-ass student :). For instance, I skipped a few classes, slept through the movies, and never took a single note. All that said, I still didn't have to take the final because I already had credit. I thought it was a fairly easy class for a D5. Nicole is always prepared and very thorough. The subject itself didn't interest me, but she's a really sweet lady who is always ready to help out. The assignments were a cake walk in my opinion, there were just a lot of little details to consider. The midterm (75 pts.) was based on the reading and her lectures. I got a C- on it, but it's because I didn't study or read the book at all. I got A's on the discussion board posts (25 pts. each) though. They only took me like, an hour each... easy as pie. The group project (75 pts.) was tough to organize, just because my group members all had different schedules. Finding time to meet was the hardest part. We got an A-. I put off the 9-11 page paper (75 pts.) til the weekend before (yeah, don't ever do that). It turned out to be only 5 pages, and I still got a 97%! I think she really cares more about the APA format, in-text citations, and peer-reviewed sources. If you present that correctly, she'll let you slide on the length requirement. Some people had like 12-page papers with lousy formatting, and got low B's and high C's. The five quizzes (10 pts. each) are just to check if you read the book. I never read, and the lowest I got was 6/10. I guessed on everything. I know, now I'm just bragging about being an idiot. CR/NC rocks my socks! :D
