A wonderful professor! I only had him for lab but wish I had him for lecture as well. I think he only does labs though. He is so sweet and is very understanding. He is willing to change a grade on a lab report or quiz if you challenge him enough and he has all the patience in the world. He is also the only one (so I\'ve been told) who allows us to use notes on the quizzes--which are tough! Love this guy! :)

Raio is a great lab instructor. The lab isn't hard, but there are some things that are a little difficult to understand at first. He sometimes just disappeared during lab, but it wasn't a big deal, and he always came back... His quizes are on the material for that week's lab, not the week before, and he makes you turn in the lab at the end of the lab, not the next week, but that ended up being really helpful, and we finished early all but 1 week. The quizes are pretty hard, so take good notes for them (one page hand written front and back)

I heard such great things about this professor who was supposed to be easy. But really, go and review the labs previously done in the MAP center - that'll help guarantee you don't stay the full 3hrs for lab. Which btw, he likes students to finish the lab before leaving the same day it's assigned. Also, his quizzes are pretty hard - be prepared for anything random you may have overlooked while reading the lab. Oh and he has this annoying quirk during lab. If you need help, he'll do this creeper smile and kind of stare at you (maybe he's mentally trying to send the answer to you?) My advice, stand your ground through his BS and make him help you. I'm not telekinetic - are you? And always ask questions about why you were docked points on your labs if it doesn't make sense. I was marked off 8 points because as he quoted "My grader was a little heavy-handed" and then he changed it to minus 3 points. Yeah - standing your ground with this man helps.

Larry is an OG! The average grade in his class is an A-, he lets you use a sheet of notes on lab quizzes and will help you (practically give you the answer) if you don't understand one of the questions on the lab. Overall, very chill.

Read and take fairly detailed notes on all the labs before class and you'll do fine. The labs aren't all that difficult as long as you have reliable lab mates. If you have questions, Larry does a good job helping you. Make sure you ask him about any point deductions on quizzes or labs you deem questionable. I had an 89.84% by the end of the quarter and easily could have gotten an A if I had done that. Good class, good instructor. His smile is a little creepy but I don't think he means it to be.

Okay so here are some helpful tips for this class. Raio does not acknowledge the fact that we have prior knowledge of chemistry or dimensional analysis. SHOW ALL YOUR WORK, ALL THE TIME. Even if you don't feel like you need to. Also the grading for labs is extremely inconsistent. We would all do the lab together and get the same answers and sometimes we would get our papers back with wildly different grades. Do not take the -7 on a lab when you earned higher. Go show him and get that lab marked up! I don't know whats up with his graders. Also before you instantly go ask him for help on a question, try to figure it out yourself. He treats you like a baby even if you ask the slightest question and sometimes goes on a tangent and you just nod and walk away without a solid answer.

He is the best lab professor I've ever had! I despise the lecture and the lab with him makes my day (even though it was an 8am). His quizzes are fairly difficult, even though he allows 1 page of written notes, be sure you understand the material. If you feel that you were graded unfair just ask and it is almost guaranteed that he will give you atleast a point back. I got a 75% on one of my labs and argued it and it was bumped up to an 90%! He is a great guy and Dad-like.

The only thing that really sucked about his lab is how hard his quizzes are. I did bad on most of the lab quizzes but it was because I never studied for lab outside of lab, so that was the problem. If you actually study, you should be fine. I'm giving him good ratings because he is a really cool guy, and he seems to care about you and your grade, and he is really nice. Compared to other lab professors, he's probably the best. Also, sometimes on the labs the grader he uses will mark you off a ton. If you ask for some points back he will nearly always give them back.

I really thought that I was going to hate him because his syllabus makes him seem like an asshole, but I actually really liked him. His quizzes are hard but you usually get high grades on the lab reports, so it evens out. Also, if you feel like you got graded too harshly, you could go up and argue your grade and he would always give back points. He's super helpful in class and just don't use your phone in class and he will like you.

Larry is a pretty cool dude who knows a lot about dirt, or should I say soil. I know he cuts down the lab a lot compared to some of the other lab professors for SS 121, which is dope. The quizzes were the only annoying part of his lab because they are very nit picky random questions that he expects you to have written down on your one page of notes (front and back). I personally failed like every quiz, and just did well on the labs to make up for it. He grades the lab 50 50 between the quizzes and lab reports, and the lab only makes up 20% of the lecture grade, which is why I didn't give a crap about the lab quizzes. He's very good about giving points back because his graders are assholes. Larry's a real one, and I'd recommend taking his section.

Larry strolled in, with his 10th straight unique Hawaiian shirt unbuttoned at the top. It was the final lab. It was a great day for Mr. Raio. Instead of teaching the lab, he assigned his favorite assignment; making the students research regional property right disputes, one after another for 2 hours. Nothing better than the smell of property rights disputes in the morning. Some of them were awful and poorly presented, but because this was property rights disputes day, he knew he couldn't resist those beautiful anxious, disinterested faces nervously waiting to deliver their property rights dispute. So he gave them all A's. Only fair, he thought, since his grader was the kind of person who roots for Filch over Griffindor students and takes out his/her repressed anger on the minuscule errors on the labs and quizzes.

Classic Larry. You won't ever seen this guy not wearing a Hawaiian T. He's very strict about closed toe shoes and phones, don't test him. The lab reports are very very easy. The quizzes get exponentially more difficult. He makes quiz questions based on the first one or two sentences of each paragraph, REMEMBER THIS IF YOU TAKE HIM. No need to study for quizzes, you can bring in a page of notes for them. I got an 88.8% in the class which was the 2nd highest, behind the person with an 89%. Some people really struggled with this lab. Make sure you show up every lab session because if you miss one you're basically screwed. __________________Reports-50%_____________Quizzes-50%___________________

Larry is honestly the best lab professor I have had so far. He is so enthusiastic and fun. If you give him sass, he gives it right back to you. You'll never see him not wearing a Hawaiian tshirt. He lets you use a page of handwritten notes on the weekly lab quizzes, which is really nice. If you know someone who had him for lab before, have them give you their old quizzes, he only changes a couple of the answers. I had the highest grade in my lab section with about a 90%. I really enjoyed having Larry as my lab professor, although unfortunately I hear he may be retiring soon.

Mr. Raio is excellent at making students feel inadequate. He builds bias within the classroom against certain students and then constantly berates them until they no longer feel comfortable asking questions without the fear of recourse. Mr. Raio would, on a regular basis, call out one of the four teams for being "last to finish" or "making mistakes", when it was clear other students in the classroom were also still working and/or also making the same mistakes. The only conclusion I could come to is that he had built up some sort of angst against the members of this group and was making it very clear to the other students in class that the members of this group were "not good enough".

Larry Raio is not a good teacher and nothing but a weld-sunburnt pervert. He would put his hand on me as I was trying to work the machines and do lab work. He tries to teach the students one to one rather than just barking orders to the whole class but it is really just a way to go up to girls with that creeper smile and make you feel totally uncomfortable. I don't know how much experience Larry Raio has but the University needs to find a different soils tech before something inappropriate happens.
