This teacher has a lot of difficulty controlling his class. He doesn't have any control in our class. We need a different teacher!

Verrrryy monotonous and boring guy. As if this Friday 1-3pm class wasn't bad enough. Its required though.. so what can you do? *If you are planning to become a veterinarian, and have him as an advisor- I would STRONGLY recommend switching advisors. He tends to project a very negative outlook, and tries to persuade you into other careers. Don't let him or his class discourage you!

Professor Hall did the best he could to teach this given class, but the class in general sucked. It was a complete waste of my Friday afternoons! My advice is to get a group of friends and take turns every week signing each other in. Use your abscences wisely too, you don't want any left over at the end of the quarter.

I was a student of Mr. Hall's in several classes as well as enterprise projects from 1991 to 1995 - yes, I graduated in four years with lots of electives and extraciricular participation. Mr. Hall, though very dry, is a wonderful teacher if you are willing to shut up, pull your head out of your ass and use the brain God gave you. A majority of you did not grow up ranching so maybe you need to listen to what the man has to say instead of thinking you had a 4H steer so you know everything. He is very informed about the beef cattle industry and strives to keep up to date through industry participation in several professional organizations. He is quiet and thoughtful especially in office hours -- he is a bit shy, however, so if you are expecting banners in your honor, forget it. He appreciates students who try hard, participate, and get dirty. Most of you are animal science majors and even if you are only interested in vet school, wouldn't it be nice to not be a complete idiot when you get to Davis and have to take bovine classes enen though you are only bidding your time untill the doggie class. All told, I am now actively involved in beef cattle production and I look back and greatly enjoyed my time with Mr. Hall. We are still in contact and I would consider hime a friend.

Mr. Hall is really nice but he looks like a scared, timid child in front of the class, I really think that speaking to the class makes him terrified! 101 is a huge waste of your time. Find people to sign you in because while some of the information about the many job opportunities in ASCI majors is helpful, its lame and boring as well. Go look at the animal science web page for all the same information. Also find someone to take notes on guest speakers because you have to submit summaries after each one thats from off campus, if you do all this and don't bother going to class your gonna be fine. Its the easiest thing in the world. They are talking about changing it to a grading system though so you might have to end up going to class pretty soon.

I think that people are too hard on Mr. Hall. I had him for class and he is also my advisor. He has a lot to offer to his students and is willing to help and offer advice. Mr. Hall is always available to talk to and knows what he is talking about. People who complain about him should try talking to him or asking him questions, it might change your mind.

Mr Hall....what can I say about Mr. Hall. He didnt teach the class at all!! All he did was introduce the person that was speaking for that day and then sat there and listened the entire time. The class itself was extremely boring because all we did was listen to lectures of random people and watch powerpoint. He is very boring, and has a very very monotone voice that will make anyone fall asleep. The final was a joke and had nothing to do with animal science....it was a questionaire type essay that he doesnt even read. Basically for animal science majors you have to take the class, so Im really sorry... But make sure you have a roommate that can sign you in so you dont have to go to class. Really the only time you have to go to class is when someone outside Cal Poly come in and talk which was about 4 times the entire year.

Very boring and pointless class but easy to make an A. Mr. Hall doesn't really teach the class, there is just a bunch of speakers that come in an talk to you.

ASCI 101 is the most boring class, but it's required so all I can recommend is bring other homework to do because it's a good time to work on other things. Mr. Hall doesn't talk much and is pretty boring.

Basically all I can say is don't really expect to learn anything. All you do is listen to guest speakers, yes this sounds cool but some of them are boring as hell! He isnt one of those teachers you will connect with or even talk to. I took this class as a freshman and since then i have done enterprise projects and clubs with him and my opinion has not changed much. But if you do get a chance to take a class with his wife Wendy i would highly reccamend it! But guess what? he is the only one who teaches this class, so tough shit!

The class, if you can call it that is a joke. Pretty much you listen to a bunch of guest speakers who try to persuade you away from pre-vet by presenting "better options". It is the biggest waste of time but you have to take it so bring work and find people to sign you in. So sorry you have to take the class

This class can be kind of boring. If you are a TRANSFER and taking it, have fun, it is a freshman class. They need to have one geared towards transfers. I guess you can get out of it, but I did not know that. Pretty much go to class and dont forget to take the quizes. I hated the 7 habits assignment. I was a group leader and half my group dropped the class without telling me, so last minute I had to write their parts. They also really discourage you from being prevet, so if you are dont listen, and if you arent listen. He is really nice, but strange at the same time.

Mr. Hall was a really good teacher. He may come off to some as rude, but I don't believe that he was ever mean or unkind to anyone in class. He was always very informative and extremely helpful if you want to know about requirements or opportunities within your major. He is a little boring at times, but if you listen to what he has to say, you will learn a lot of valuable information that is very benefitial to your career hear at Cal Poly. The class was REALLY easy, just show up and pay special attention to the "off campus" speakers, because there will be an online quiz on the material they present. Overall, this class was very benefitial, and very easy. As long as you show up and take the quizzes you are guaranteed to pass the class.

This is a 101 class. That in itself shows how easy it is. You don\'t learn much in this class, as it\'s focused on making freshmen think about career opportunities. All you do is listen to guest speakers. Practically impossible to not pass unless you never go to class. But Mr. Hall himself seems very boring. I\'ve heard he is a very nice guy outside of the classroom, especially as an adviser, but during class (as it was co-taught) he stood against the wall most of the time, nodding here and there as needed. I\'m taking him for 221, so we\'ll see how it goes.

The main goal of this class is to show animal science majors there are other careers than just being a veterinarian and to convince them to go to grad school. Some of the speakers are interesting but it can get really boring at times. They take attendance with ID tags so you have to go to get "beeped". It's not that bad though. A few quizzes on Polylearn that you have to watch out for because Hall won't always tell the class when they're up. A few projects and a final which are super easy because it doesn't matter what you write, I think they give you full credit if you turn it in. The 4 year plan is definitely helpful, but will set you up for disappointment. Mr. Hall mostly just introduces speakers and gives a few comments but you'll soon know he loves cattle haha Oh, and the "surprise" at the end of the quarter is taking off the tags, not candy... :/

This guy is such a dick. I actually never took a class but I HAD him as a counselor. He is a sexist chauvinist bastard who is way creepy He thinks girls have no place in this world, especially in Ag or ASCI. I would recommend never taking him or meeting him if you don't want your self esteem to go down like 100%. If you are trying to be a vet he'll tell you to quit b/c girls aren't smart enough.

Mr. Hall is awful. He doesn't have any confidence, and can't make the class interesting if he tried. He mumbles and never smiles and makes you want to not be there. The quizes are easy if you take fifteen minutes to look over the material... if you can survive the three hours of lab with him. Don't take him if you have any choice.

His test answers contradict what he teaches in lecture, and when presented with evidence of such he ignores student concerns insisting that the error is theirs, not his. He contradicts his own lectures from one day to the next, and the only way to come even close to reliably studying for his exams is to memorize the previous tests.

Mr. Hall definitely knows his stuff when it comes to cattle and agriculture. Al his ratings say he is boring, but he really isn\'t that bad and I had this class at 8 in the morning. But for a species class, he made this class way too hard. The midterms were very unfair because he always had questions that came out of nowhere and arguing with him was pointless. He is a nice teacher and means well, but if you are thinking this will be an easy A, it will not!

All I have to say is...seriously, Cal Poly? I was so disappointed with this professor and this class. I felt like Mr. Hall had some serious problems identifying important and relevant material to teach in an introductory beef production class. Much of the class consisted of random charts and graphs being projected on the wall, and I never really understood what point he was trying to make with all of them. His lectures jumped around like crazy and he felt the need to talk about the most insignificant material. It was boring as hell. However, I really could have handled the class if it weren\'t for the biased agenda that Mr. Hall constantly presented to the class. Every day, there would be some kind of unfounded and ridiculous comment about the government, the feds, Al Gore, global warming, or the EPA. He had no shame in sharing his completely uneducated opinion and in telling the class that we should agree with him. I am of the opinion that it is NEVER a professor\'s place to tell students what they should believe, and although I know that it is sometimes hard to keep opinions out of one\'s teaching, Mr. Hall didn\'t make the smallest of efforts to do so. The worst of it was that his opinions were SO biased and SO uneducated. He would also show ridiculous right-wing propaganda videos, for example, some weird anti-Al Gore video clip that talked about how global warming isn\'t real, and if it was, how it would be a good thing. RIGHT. Regardless of what his opinion of what is or isn\'t going on in the world, it is HIS job as a professor to present an unbiased view of it all. This class could have been actually to those interested in entering the beef industry if Hall would stop denying any wrongdoing on the part of the beef industry, would admit the areas in which the industry could improve, and demonstrate to students ways in which this could be done. But he is so outdated and old that he will never let go of his obsolete views in order to be an effective and useful professor. He may have a lot of knowledge about the beef industry, but he doesn\'t deserve to teach at this school if he intends to abuse his status as an educator to mislead students about the industry\'s current problems. Not to mention, hes so boring you will want to die during every class.

I dont understand why people have rated Mike so poorly. He is one of the few professors at Cal Poly that cares about the success of his students. He knows his stuff, is very organized, very fair, and easily approachable. His tests are difficult, but he gives plenty of assignments and extra credit throughout the quarter to help with your grade. I would highly recommend taking this class for your ruminant requirement!

"popalation" "secatary" "warshington" "drouth" "curic-uh-lum" "mundee,tuesdee,wednesdee..." "unaseptable" Keep your ears open. These are just a few of the words he mispronounces daily, so as you probably can imagine the class itself is pretty entertaining. Overall, the class is doable. As far as tests go, be prepared for random questions he has never gone over, but he does curve the grades. The final is optional, so if you are fine with your grade, don't take it. P.S. Try and catch him on a windy day (you will eventually know what this means.)

Good teacher. He tries to get to know students outside of class, especially if you are involved in a lot of beef activities. There are pretty easy 10 point quizes every couple weeks and an optional final. If you are interested in beef production it is a good class to take.

While Mike may seem boring at first, it is only because you don't know him. Get to know him and don't be judgemental and he is a VERY helpful and resourceful guy. If you can't handle him, it is probably only because you have your own issues. He is also my advisor and will really do a lot to help out. I encourage people to ignore the rough exterior and just go into a class with an open mind and he will not let you down

This is the first class that I have had with Mike. I have been on several enterprise projects that he has advised/coadvised. I would recomend him as a teacher and as a enterprise project advisor. I would also recomend 311 if you are intrested in beef production. Like most people work hard for him and show him that you care and he will show intrest in your success.

Mr. Hall is very knowledgeable about the beef industry as a whole but has a hard time conveying it in an interesting manner. The class fulfills a requirement and doesn't offer much else. Suffer through it.
