I took a really heavy course load this quarter thinking that this 100 level GE class wouldn\'t be a problem. I did more work for this class than for any of my other classes combined. It\'s a ridiculous amount of information to memorize for the finals and midterms. He rushes through information in class and you receive absolutely no feedback on your homework, the in class worksheets, and you only get to look over the midterms for ten minutes in class and cannot take them with you to study. DON\'T take this class unless you want to work extremely hard for a mediocre grade in a class that doesn\'t exactly matter to your major.

Scott was a great teacher. He really broke down the information for the class. I just took notes in class and studied from them. The book was only supplementary. His extra credits also helped a lot. He teaches well and his good attitude shows. I am really glad I got Johnston because he made this class worth attending. If you take his class, focus on his study guides because he doesn\'t waiver far from them on the tests.

Scott definitely knows a ton about geology and he is very passionate about it. With that said, he is a pretty awful teacher. I think hes way too young and inexperienced and doesnt really have any idea how to present material to his students. Its a pretty tough class and there is definitely a lot to know and memorize. 2 midterms and a final, each of which is half scantron and half multiple choice. and each of which is really hard. Pay attention in class, take really good notes, READ. The book helps way more than the lectures. He also gives out study guides but they're not that helpful. I do not recommend taking Johnston for anything.

His tests are ridiculous. The study guide for the final was 4 1/2 pages long for a GE! He doesn't show up for his office hours. While he is generally a nice guy, he fails to realize that the material is extremely difficult for a 100 level GE class. The syllabus should be changed, because this is by far the hardest GE I have ever taken, including all my upper division GEs. I studied and got as much help as possible, and still received the lowest grade I have ever received in my entire life.

I am sitting in this class right now, and I have no idea what's going on. He is a nice guy and really into this stuff, but not really a good teacher at all. Granted, science is not my strong point, but I still feel like I should not be having this much trouble. And even though he tries to make the material interesting, it's just so hard for me to pay attention because I find it incredibly boring. Just a warning- The class is harder than most people probably expect it to be.

Scott was great! He was pretty entertaining in lecture and really nice to talk to in office hours. The lecture was 2 hours so it got kind of boring towards the end of class. We had 2 midterms, a homework assignment every week and an activity book that we did during class. He would break up the lectures with pages from the activity book so we could get up and stretch if we needed to. The homeworks were easy if you paid attention in class, and he was very helpful in office hours when i had questions. The midterms were MC and short answer questions and also kind of hard. Some of the questions were more specific than i was prepared for, but if you take good notes you should be able to at least get a B. He offered an extra credit assignment after each midterm that could boost your grade up to 4%, and they were fun so definietly do those. Ours were going to Avila Beach and Montana de Oro and looking at the rocks there and answering questions. One thing i didn't like was that he didn't give you your test back to study from for the final. You had to go into his office to look at them. Overall he was a good teacher and i would recommend him.

Scott is such a badass. Of course it gets boring listening to someone talk about rocks for 2 hours, but he always seemed to have my attention. I really enjoyed the subject and found that I actually remember the information he presented. He always had pictures, videos, diagrams, etc. to go along with the lectures which I found helped me a lot and kept it interesting. He's a pretty funny guy and is definitely very passionate about geology. The study guides before the tests basically gave everything you needed to know about the test and as long as you paid attention and took notes in class they were generally easy. Plus there are plenty of extra credit opportunities which pointed out a lot of interesting features in slo county that I would not have known otherwise.

I haven't finished the course but I felt compelled to write a polyrating before registration begins. Also he has another polyratings page so check that one out too. The first thing that really bugs me about Professor Johnston is that he patronizes us constantly. He treats us like we are ten years old. I'm a senior and I understand that there are a lot of freshman in the class but its really annoying. We've had 3 homework assignments so far which have been vague at best. He refuses to help you unless you go to his office hours which I have no intention of doing because I just generally don't like him because last time I checked I'm an adult and would prefer to be treated as such. He doesn't give you a grade on the homeworks or ever go over the answers because he says if you don't understand something you should come into office hours. We have class time for a reason I don't understand why he can't use to it make sure the class understands the material. The multiple choice on the test wasn't too bad but good luck with the short answer. It's vague like his homework questions. We have an activity book which no one understands how to do until he explains it. However before he does he let's us try it on our own. The whole thing is a huge waste of time. He's a really nice guy and really interested in the material but needs to try a little harder to understand the needs of his students. I would recommend taking someone else. I've heard the material in the other classes is a lot easier. On the upside you don't need to buy a book because everything is covered in class (if you understand what he's talking about-- good luck with that one). That's about the only upside though.

It is possible that all GE B3's are extremely boring, hard, and present useless information but i would not recommend this class. The excitement of this class peaks during week 1 and spirals downward after that. johnston is a funny guy who loves geology but his class was extremely difficult. lots of memorization of useless facts. it seems he has to pack a lot of info into the 10 week class and is too rushed to help students understand when they are confused. he didnt put our grades on polylearn for the entire quarter and if you ask him what you have in the class he says he doesnt know, so your grade will be a mystery until it shows up on your transcript.

I thought he was a great teacher and presented the material very well. The only problem is the amount of material you cover every lecture and having to apply it to everything in past lectures. I found the material interesting but found it difficult to keep track of so much. Not a hard class if you're willing to study and actually understand the concepts as he goes over them. I would recommend the class. The dude loves geology and really tries to help you understand the concepts.

I regret this class so much. It is not easy by any means and it was the biggest stressor this quarter. Required the most time and patience. I don't think the information was presented clearly or in a way that was easy to understand. Unless you are in a science-related major, it doesn't come straightforwardly. Exams were nearly impossible and weighted so heavily. I am just glad I'm done with it. I don't agree that this class or teacher were the best here at Poly.

Professor Johnston appears at first to be an energetic teacher who is excited to teach you all you need to know about rocks so you can promptly move on with the rest of your academic life. Unfortunately this wears off after about the first midterm when he continues to treat you like a child when explaining concepts in front of a large lecture hall that ends up getting a handful of awkward laughs. His extra credit opportunities at first seem easy and straightforward, but that is of course before you end up driving to whatever location he tells you to do a self guided tour that ends up taking three hours to take two pictures of yourself. This class is a chore to work through due to the sheer amount of busy work he has you do that quickly becomes irrelevant when the discussion quizzes are over with. The class could end up being better in the hands of a more capable instructor. Avoid Prof Johnston unless you're willing to deal with the quarter long headache that comes with his teaching.

Great teacher! Very enthusiastic and ready to help if you ask. He covers a LOT of material, so it's important to show up to class, pay attention, and ask early if you're confused about anything. I've never liked science much and wasn't looking forward to the class, but it actually gave me a pretty good knowledge/appreciation of geography. It's more work than some other GE's, but definitely worth it!

As an engineering major, I though I was going to skate through this class. I actually had to put a lot of time and effort in. First off, the material is extremely dry, and there are a lot of topics to cover. Scott does not do a good job at all of presenting this material. Lectures are only helpful because of the activities that are done in the activity book, which helps you to understand the material a little bit better. Homework is pretty much free points because the assignments dont relate to lecture and are never used again once you do it. The discussions and discussion quizzes were the most applicable part of this class, but if you dont go to them you are pretty much screwed. The 2 midterms were formatted the exact same, 50 points each, 25 MC and 25 points of "written", basically drawing geology stuff and applying the knowledge. DO THE STUDY GUIDE he emails a week before the test, read over the guide you made and you will pass the midterms. His huge ass curve and small extra credit assignments will get you at least a C+ on the tests. The final is cumulative, which is ridiculous because of the amount of topics that are covered. Overall, I hated this class. Scott, although a nice guy, is not a great lecturer and you just feel bad for him. Try to go to class, go to all the discussions, and DO THE STUDY GUIDES and extra credit trips. Hopefully you take the class with a couple friends, otherwise you are going to kill yourself. Good luck.

Scott is an awesome guy who has done amazing things in his life. But this class is way to difficult to be a GE, he makes it as everyone in there is or wants to be a geologist. The homeworks were way too hard and didn't test you in the material it was trying to trick you with multiple right answers and just assuming you know everything about geology. He gives out a study guide for each midterm and final which is a life saver, because there is so much material covered its overwhelming. He just makes this class too intense for a low level GE

I was shocked when I came on here and saw Scott's current rating. This guy is the bomb! I have never enjoyed science and figured this would be another one of those typical science lecture classes but I came out of here actually giving a crap about the subject. Scott understands just about everyone is taking the class to fulfill their GE, but the way he teaches the class is extraordinary. You must show up to every lecture because the class pretty much builds off of the previous subject so it's lethal if you fall behind early. Scott kept me involved during every lecture and he will clarify just about any geology-related you could have. If I had to give this guy a weakness, I would say his HW is a little rigorous. You do the HW and then take an online quiz based off of the material, and it was almost impossible to get a perfect score. Saying that, the class is based off of a giant curve so everyone ends up doing well. I seriously recommend this guy and this class. Easy GE, interesting lectures, and helpful dude.

Scott was a great professor. He really knew how to make the material interesting which could have otherwise been very boring. He was a funny and easy going guy who did his best to help students. The homework quizzes were hard but if you average a B on them you will be fine. The midterms weren't as bad as I thought and the curve is huge which helps a lot. I got an A on the first one and a B on the second. Go to lectures or you will be confused on all the material. As long as you put in some effort and attend lectures you can easily earn a B in this class.

Scott is pretty cool. He has lame jokes but it makes the class more interesting and funny. The midterms and final are fair and have a huge curve so you should definitely study but don't have breakdowns over them because you'll probably end up doing better than you thought. He answers questions in lecture thoroughly but I actually didn't find him as helpful when I went to office hours. The only thing I really didn't like was that you can't review your discussion and homework quizzes after you take them so you don't know what you got wrong on them and can't use them to study.

I took Scott fall quarter and thought his class was going to be my most boring, especially because it was 7:40 to 9 at night Tuesday Thursday. However he made me very excited to learn about Geology. The only problem i saw with the class was that you pretty much had to go to all the lectures. If you don't then you get very behind and may struggle because he picks and chooses materials from the chapter and unless you want to look at all the chapters information (which is about twice as much as he goes over in his lectures). He has online homework once a week that has an article and lots of review questions over it, from this he has a quiz that is timed and is only a couple of these questions. Its difficult and if you average a B you'll be good. He has quizzes over his weekly discussions that are easy. His midterms are rather difficult but he curves them, I was surprised his final was much easier and raised my grade from about a B to an A-. Scott also offers extra credit for field trips to local places that add to your midterm grade. I found his class reasonable but thought I liked it because the information was interesting to me, to others Thursday night classes may be too much but if the time doesn't bother you I recommend Johnston.

Professor Johnston knows what he is talking about, and explains things clearly enough for you to figure it out for the tests/quizzes (almost everything he goes over is also in the book). If you don't understand something, just go to office hours. He is really helpful, and passionate about geology. You can easily get an A in this class if you show up to lecture and discussion (NEVER MISS DISCUSSION! IT'S SO HELPFUL!) and do all of the online quizzes. Seriously. Show up, take good notes, go to office hours if you're confused. Don't skip discussion, seriously. Geology may be a boring subject to you, but this course is very accessible for all students, even those who are terrible at/hate science (like me!).

Wow I LOVED this professor! By far my favorite class of the quarter. He was so caring about his students and he really made sure that each student understood what he taught. I had this class at 7:40 but I was excited to go to it. He honestly made me consider switching my major. His passion for what he teaches is so apparent, and it makes his classes really entertaining and informative. This was definitely my easiest class of the quarter, but it required a lot of memorization. His tests were very difficult, and I studied for hours for each one. However, I loved this class despite the fact, and I would ABSOLUTELY recommend this professor. Love ya Scott.

Although I didn't get the best grade in his class (it was due to health issues during a midterm exam, so please don't judge), Scott is an awesome teacher. The twice a week lecture was paired with a 50 min. discussion once a week. During discussion, he generally took one topic and either explained it further, or gave a brief description and then paired it with a kinesthetic activity (ex. identifying rocks where you actually look and touch rocks and figure out their classification). The lecture was 7:40am, which was a little hard to make and drag myself out for, but he did his best to make it extremely easy to understand and would go back to the bare-bone basics if you asked him too. Only thing I hated about this course was the homework assignments. You would have to take a quiz on the topic talked about during your discussion once a week, and he would change the due dates fairly often so it was common to miss a quiz. He also assigned weekly homework assignments that I failed EVERY TIME. I got a better grade guessing on the quiz at the end then when I actually read the article, did the paper assignment, and then took the quiz. The quiz questions don't correlate with the information from the article, or required extra research/knowledge not given. Overall, Scott is great, goofy, easy to understand, and a good intro class to Geology for those not into science at all (English major speaking).

Scott Johnston is very passionate about geology and it is reflected in his enthusiasm during discussion and lecture. The lecture powerpoint slides are straightforward and don't have a ton of text on them which is nice because you spend more time listening to what Professor has to say than copying bodies of text into your notebook. Scott also does a great job answering questions for students during lecture and ALWAYS asks if anyone is confused about anything. (Tip: Ask him to draw a cross section of something you don't understand and it should clarify your questions). Scott also offers 3 extra credits, so definitely take advantage of them. There are 2 mid-terms and one final, all with multiple choice and short answer. The exams were extremely fair and reflected a lot of what we learned in discussion. If you have any trouble in this class, Scott is super helpful in office hours, so take advantage of that. Overall, Scott made geology very interesting to learn about.

If someone had a question, he would explain it clearly and give examples. The lectures were very helpful, and they were only "boring" if you don't like geology. The homework assignments were not very hard; there are a few questions about an article that you can refer to as you go along, and if you can read then you should easily get a B on them. I am in Scotts class right now and he is a super nice guy and tries to keep the class interesting by cracking jokes every now and again but I don't think he's a great teacher. He definitely knows his stuff and is really passionate about geology but doesnt quite know how to teach it. We are given homework every other week or so but he refuses to answers any questions people have about it in class. He just says to come to office hours. I dont think he really explains concepts to us in depth during lecture either unless someone asks for clarification and even then he will say to come to office hours. Now I understand that going to a teachers office hours is important but he cant expect all of us to be coming to them. He uses his office hours as an excuse to not go over certain material or answer questions. Its also tough too because he doesnt tell us to buy a specific book, just an entry level geology book and sometimes what he teaches us isnt in the book so its hard to fully understand some of the concepts. His tests are pretty hard but if you just study the charts and maps he goes over in class and make flashcards for all of the concepts they are do-able.

Scott is one badass mofo... chillest professor ever. His tightness makes his lectures on rocks as interesting as they can possibly be, and the fact that he incorporates lecture activities and questions into his slides gives you a chance to apply the knowledge directly in class. That being said however, despite how easy-going class time is and how simple you think the material is in class, somehow the midterms/finals tend to have some qs that are alot more detailed than anticipated. Make sure to take good notes.. he posts his powerpoints on blackboard, but theyre pretty vague. Jot down more than just what he writes on the board, too. At times he can speak a little quickly and doesn't really stop to pause, but still try to get that info. Study the damn diagrams.. there are kind of a lot so it is tedious, but they definitely comprise an important part of the tests. He'll occasionally collect the lecture books randomly, so showing up is a good idea. Do the homework, easy points. Extra credit adds 2% to your midterm grades. Overall, super cool prof, but I guess bc he's so chill, you do have to put in a little bit more effort to keep up.

Scott is hilarious, his personality and jokes seriously make the class. He's very cool and laid back, but his tests can be hard. Usually about 30 multiple choice and 5 short answer/essay questions. Make sure you pay attention to diagrams and charts/graphs/cross sections drawn or shown in class, you will most likely have to draw them in the short answer test questions. Bottom line, even if his lectures seem pretty basic and straight forward, his tests are NOT and you need to know details. But he's hilarious, you'll laugh a lot, really nice guy, flexible too about rearranging things ahead of time. Offers extra credit after each test too. PS, on his tests, if he gives you a multiple choice questions like, a, b, c, a&b, or all of the above, it's never all of the above and usually a single answer, not a&b or anything like that.

He was funny in class but if you are looking for an easy quarter and to take a three unit class.... dont take his class. The way he does his lecture is spotted and confusing, not to mention the homework you spend hours doing and reading you have to take a quiz for after every week and its impossible to get an A on it even if you did do the homework. Scott Johnston is very knowledgeable about geology and was overall a cool guy and good professor. Physical geology has a TON of material which I think is what makes it a bit difficult. As long as you go to the lectures and pay attention/ take good notes this class isn't so bad and you won't need to glance at the book (I don't even know if there was a book). There were online quizzes and homeworks every week and honestly I think they helped me keep up with the material so just do them. Scott was an enthusiastic teacher, but failed to convey the material in an organized fashion. Even though there is a LOT of material to cover, Scott does NOT do a good job of organizing it in a clear way. Much improvement needed in this area. This class is a lot of work for a GE and the exams are very difficult. He does grade on a curve..but that fact that he does should be indicative of what kind of course this is. Two midterms and a final (20%, 25%, and 30%). Tests are multiple choice with a few short answer questions -- usually from the discussion section workbook. Weekly discussion quizzes and homework assignments. Homework takes a decent amount of time (45-60 minutes) but you can take the quiz multiple times until you get the correct answers. The discussion quizzes are generally short and take 10-15 minutes, but you only get one shot. While I personally wouldn't recommend this class to anyone, if you pay attention and dedicate the time to it, you can swing an A or B. Just keep in mind that it is a decent amount of work for a GE. Your time is probably better spent elsewhere.

Johnston was a great professor! He shows a lot of passion when he teaches. The class is interactive and you will be working on activities in a small booklet. The workload in this class isn't a lot. You are given a reading assignment every week. There is a homework quiz that is based on the reading and has approximately 10 - 15 questions with a time limit of 45 minutes. The homework quizzes are challenging even if you do the reading assignment. Just doing the reading may not be enough to do well on the homework quizzes. They may involve choices, such as A, B, C, D, E, F, G (Check all that applies), and may ask you to analyze a picture. Johnston may ask questions that connect the reading to what was taught in lecture. Unlike some of the other reviews, it is possible to get 100% on multiple homework quizzes. The average on them is about a C. If you want to see what you missed on these quizzes, you will need to go to office hours. Johnston really cares about seeing that his students go to office hours for help. You are also given a very short activity quiz that is based on the lecture and can be taken multiple times. The midterms and final are not difficult if you review your notes frequently and pay attention in class. The questions on the exams can be very detailed and can require memorization. Half of the tests is multiple choice while the other half is free response. They are much easier than the homework quizzes though and the average on them is a C. Johnston does curve the class though. You have two extra credit opportunities (going to Montana Del Oro, Avila Beach to analyze specific rock features, etc.) that can increase your midterm score by 2 %, each. He doesn't always write everything on the chalk board, so you will need to take additional notes on what he is saying. The PowerPoint slides are not very detailed.

Johnston is an extremely enthusiastic professor who clearly has experience and knows everything about Geology. His lectures are really entertaining because he presents the material in a fun and exciting way. That being said, it can sometimes be easy to fall asleep because he lectures for the whole 1 1/2 hours of class non-stop, and only gives us a short period of time to work in the activity workbook, which can be very helpful when it comes to studying for midterms. SPEAKING OF MIDTERMS, Johnston literally gives the most ridiculous, unnecessarily difficult midterms. They are a fuckin joke. Study your ass off, memorize graphs and processes, make quizlets for over a hundred terms from his "study guide", and don't be surprised when he hands you a C. The multiple choice can be extremely convoluted and the short answer can leave you dazed and confused. But I guess thats ok, because he grades on this hella weird curving scale where you compare yourself to the rest of the class. So due to the MD5# being rerouted through the OC3 optical lines of the reverse tangent in the intergalactic glory hole of the watermelon quadratic dimension, somehow your C- becomes a B at the end of the quarter. I never understood his grading and neither will you. Another thing that ticked me off about the class is that his extra credit assignments where you would have to spend an entire day going out to Avila or Montana de Oro to answer questions about rocks, only adds 2% to a midterm grade. In my opinion that was a joke and not worth my time. So, take Johnston if you want a chill enthusiastic professor who is really passionate about a cool subject. But just beware your grades at the end of the quarter might not reflect the time and effort you put in.

Dr. Johnston. What a beast. If anyone knows anything about geology, it\'s this guy. This lab class was pretty strait forward. Each lab is spent completing a handout. No labs to take home and waste your weekend working on. However, you\'re definitely going to want to study them for the test in week 5 that is actually really hard. Field trips are, of course, awesome. Sometimes this guy\'s clarity is a bit lacking, and some of the learning is by struggling with the information, which sucks. But other than that I highly recommend this guy.

Scott was a great lab teacher. He knows a ton about geology and really teaches the information well. The lab itself is full of busy work and kinda boring, but not too hard.
