Soma is a very average professor. Her notes are VERY helpful, as she puts them online but you have to fill in the blanks in class. However, she doesnt go over key points, so it makes the homework sometimes very confusing. To get these key points, you MUST go to her office hours, as she isn't very good at answering questions in class. Overall, Soma is a very nice person but a very average teacher

The class is difficult but not impossible. Dr. Roy keeps the class interesting, and she gives wonderful outlines for notes. The main project is very easy, and she helps you as much as needed. For a GE class it is challenging, but not worse than any other math requirement.

She posts notes on blackboard that are fill in the blank for when you go to class. She preents the material really well and answers any questions you have. Her class can get a little boring sometimes. It\'s not an easy class, there are quizzes everyweek and tests every 3 weeks. I would say take this class though.

Soma was a very good professor. She presented everything clearly and was very helpful during class and during office hours too. There were 2 midterms and a final along with graded HW and a few quizes. And for the midterms/final, you were allowed one sheet of computer paper (front and back) with any notes or formulas or example problems...this was very helpful. This was the first stat class i ever took and I got an A thanks to her. I recommend her to anyone.

Dr. Roy seemed like a great professor at the beginning of the quarter. All the lectures are on blackboard and we fill them in during class lectures. We had labs every Monday that ranged from 2 pages to 6 pages and were due that Thursday. Most labs also had pre-labs due the day of the lab. We also had investigations that were up to 3 pages due every Monday. This class is A LOT of work for a G.E. Almost all of my homework this quarter was for this class. Tests were long and points were taken unfairly. She is a nice person, but a horrible teacher. I would take someone else for this class.

she's an ok teacher...she can be really annoying and yes she does treat you like a 5 year old. don't sit at the back of the class, that's like automatic points taken off. she wasn't horrible, she taught pretty decently, but her "studyguides" had nothing to do with the tests. on one test i wrote "statistically significant" instead of "greatly statistically significant" and i got 3 points taken off. so, be careful. i would never take her again...ever.

I really liked soma and completely disagree with any of the negative reviews given for her. She was a very relaxed teacher who actually took the time to remember your name and was quick with returning homework and tests. I also enjoyed not having to buy a book for this course, she posted all the notes on blackboard and all you had to do is print them out and pay attention in class...thats seriously all it takes to pass this course. She definitely expects you to participate in the lectures and will ask very simple questions that have mostly obvious answers, alot of people think this is her "treating you like a 5 year old" but seriously, no one ever spoke up in my class except for a few people so obviously shes gonna think that the questions are too hard for you and need to be dumbed down...anyway, I found this class pretty easy for the most part, you get to work on hw and labs with a partner and theres a quiz every so often that are pretty easy. The only complaint I have are that the tests are kind of difficult but they arent impossible. I would take another class with her.

Great Class! It may challenge you but as long as you show up, do all assignments, ask for assistance, and put in some time you will understand the material. The professor was very organized, clear, and prepared. She takes a genuine interest in having all her students understand the material. Her class in engaging because she uses all cool, real life examples that make them interesting to analyze. You don't even have to waste money on a boring textbook, she just gives you notes on the material on blackboard.

Dr. Roy is super smart and really nice and pretty funny, too. She shows she cares about your grade. This class is not easy, but she does a really good job at presenting the material and helping all that she can. She taught me a lot. I WOULD MOST DEFINITELY RECOMMEND HER!

Although I do think Roy is a good teacher and she presents the material very clearly, her quizzes and tests often did not reflect the material taught in class. She would give random stuff from left field that I had never even heard her talk about in class. She is also an incredibly tough grader. She also always let us out a couple minutes late every time and would complain when we would pack our bags up at 1 minute till because we "still had so much time left" which really bugged me.

Dr. Roy has become one of my favorite teachers here at Poly. She is incredible with presenting the material and really wants you to learn the subject. She is extremely friendly and welcoming to students at all levels. I had never taken a statistics class before so I was a bit nervous but the transition was easy due to Dr. Roy. I highly highly highly recommend.

I thought she was an excellent teacher! You need to go to class, be involved, do the labs and study for tests but doing average effort in all those things will get you an A! She makes the material very straightforward. Stat isn't everyone's favorite topic but she presented it as interestingly as she could. She's very friendly and wants students to succeed, so asking for help is a good idea if you have trouble. I would say one of the better teachers I've had here at Cal Poly.

Dr. Roy is amazing. The curriculum for 218 is as interesting as watching paint dry, but that's not her fault. She lectures through examples, with occasional definitions sprinkled throughout. She has weekly optional homework, as well as weekly Investigations, which are basically a series of case studies. These get really long and monotonous as the quarter progresses, but they are really so helpful to aid your understanding of the material. Don't do them all in one sitting the day before it's due, or you'll want to claw your eyes out. Her tests are fair, 3 exams and a midterm. Her quizzes are frequent but low-stress, usually 1-3 questions based on what you just talked about. That said, pay attention in lecture, or you'll fail every one of them. Also she does not do make-up quizzes, so if you miss one, you're out of luck. BUT, that said, she drops your two lowest quiz scores, so if you have to miss class, you have a safety cushion. Also, you are allowed note sheets for all exams.

Dr. Roy was a great teacher. She presents the material with easy powerpoints in class everyday. She also posts all the slides on polylearn. Her pace is very good and whenever a student has a question she spends the time to go over the topic and explain it again and in another way that makes sense. There are quizzes at the end of every week, but half of them are group quizzes. The quizzes are always questions that have talked about alot in class and she hints at what's going to be on them most of the time. The midterms haven't been too bad either with the class averaging a B-. The only rough part is that she is a pretty harsh grader with quizzes/midterms but nothing unreasonable. I highly recommend her as a Stats 251 teacher; she presents the material easily and is very nice and fun in lectures.

Soma Roy is legit the best! She learns everyone's name and really cares about her students. She gave me a pep talk in office hours once and wants you to succeed. The class is by no means easy, you have to study for sure but it is very manageable. Her tests are open notes which is a major bonus! Compared to the other professors, she is the best!!!!!

EASY POINTS. Assigns exercise problems everyday on PolyLearn but they are easy two points if pay attention in class. Also, every friday an assignment is due, which is also very easy as long as pay attention. Overall, there is enough points and assignments for anyone to get an A or B even if do bad on a test. I enjoy her class and highly recommend it!

First off, I love Dr.Roy and her class. Statistics is a quite difficult subject, and I struggled in the class, but I worked for that A. Dr.Roy is so friendly and nice, she is also so helpful. She's always willing to help. She grades fast which gives you immediate feedback; she answers email very fast too. There's nothing negative to say about her because she literally does everything to help her students. We have weekly homework (she calls them explorations), take the time to do them CAREFULLY because they really help with the midterms and final. We have two mini projects, which are not bad at all, they're just like the weekly homework except you have to collect data on your own. On the tests, write down your thoughts or anything you know, because she gives partial credits. Study hard and do your part as a student and she'll do her part to help you out by curving a little. Best teacher ever!

I did all of my homework and had an A on that section but the tests were unbelievably hard and there was not enough time. She did everything for us in class and we did nothing on our own so it really showed. She tested on things different than our projects or what we did in class. I went to office hours and put at least an hour and a half into it a day and still didnt pass. Also I had a 68.9 and did extra credit and still didn't pass.

The test are extremely hard. The investigations (homework), quizzes (which you do with a partner sometimes), and projects are not to bad. everyone does well on the quizzes, the investigation average for my class was70%, and you have to go to class to get credit for not taking. Thebprojects are strange and everyone usually averages Cs and Bs. The mid terms and finals are impossible, you have no time to finish and she puts new concepts on the midterms and finals.

Soma takes an easy subject and makes it insanely difficult and annoying. There is either a quiz or an investigation due EVERYDAY. In lectures, she just talks and talks. Her questions are worded TERRIBLY and she is so an insanely picky grader so even if you understand everything, if it's not exactly the way she wants it she'll slaughter you with subtracting points and I don't mean that lightly.

Soma does not deserve all these negative nancies. She's a sweetheart and a great teacher that will help you when you struggle. Her grading is always fair, though you should expect to put quality time into her homeworks because it will be impossible to get by them without genuinely understanding the concepts. Neither midterms are especially hard and it is very possible to get a fair grade in this class if you put in the work and make an attempt to understand the subject. Either way, Soma does not deserve her current GPA and you should be happy when you get to take her.

Prof Roy is a decent teacher. Her lectures and notes are straightforward and understandable, but she is EXTREMELY nit-picky when grading exams and homework. I had her for 301 and 302, and almost never got back points when I stopped in for office hours. It was very frustrating going into office hours for help on a problem, receiving help, and then somehow missing .5 on problems that she helped me with. In my opinion, not an easy A, but passable.

Currently enrolled in the course. It is beyond easy. That being said, it is also incredibly annoying. She has at least one assignment due every class period, and if nothing is due there will be a little quiz. This means you can never miss class, which is unfortunate because the material is so basic. Further, she treats everyone like they are extremely "slow". The lectures are slow and for the most part very inefficient. She is the kind of teacher to prompt the class for an out-loud response to her basic question (which nobody wants to stoop low enough to answer). She would be an alright elementary or middle school level instructor. At the college level, this classroom environment is simply embarrassing. If you want a throwback to daily highschool homework and an easy A, then Soma is your girl. If you want to feel even remotely engaged during the classroom, look elsewhere...

this teacher is the worst teacher. She is so mean and does not give students the benefit of the doubt at all!!!!!! She grades HW like quizzes!! and her quizzes rape you! Seriously, no matter what anyone says, do not take Soma Roy. She is basically a lonely single indian chick. She grades everything way too fast and she gets way too excited for lectures just so she can write on her neat little Tablet laptop. So seriously guys, her HW is really hard, she writes her own problems (like i said above, lonely single indian chick) and her midterms, while not bad, are timely. So all in all, DO NOT TAKE SOMA ROY!!!!!!!! DO NOT TAKE SOMA ROY!!!!!!!! DO NOT TAKE SOMA ROY!!!!!!!!

Soma Roy is a pretty decent teacher. She\'s not fantastic but she definitely is able to teach at a reasonable level. Her expectations for homework and quizzes are a little higher than expected, but come on, this is a 300 level class. If you put in two or three hours every Sunday to do the weekly homework assignment, you will do very well. She allows more note sheets than you will ever need, and her presentation style is very helpful. She posts lecture notes with fill in the blanks and spaces for examples, then lectures using Powerpoint and a tablet PC to actually demonstrate the material. I can\'t disagree with the people below me more, they sound pretty pathetic. They\'re probably just bitter that they got bad grades because they are lazy. The only think about this Soma Roy that is annoying is that she keeps the class in until the VERY end of the hour, even sometimes past the bells ringing. It can be frustrating, so don\'t plan on having a class all the way across campus right after hers, because you WILL be late, every day.

Soma Roy is definitely not the worst teacher at Poly, but not the best either. I took AP Stats in high school, and a lot of times she would explain things way more complicated than they needed to be. The class is really boring to go to and to pay attention to because she treats you like you\'re in 5th grade and her notes are fill in the blank. She assigns way too much hw and grades it pretty harshly. She grades her quizzes pretty hard too. She\'s pretty generous when grading tests though. And her tests are not hard at all, just time consuming; so make sure you practice so you don\'t run out of time during a test. If this were a class I was more serious about, she would be a good teacher. But I don\'t think anyone cares about stats, since it\'s a support class for everyone. So if you\'re lazy like me, and don\'t care about stats to begin with, look for someone else. If no one else teaches it, take her and suck it up. Even if you\'re lazy, just study before tests and you can end up with a B.

I love Soma. I honestly do not understand how she has such bad reviews. This was my third time having her. HWs are due once/week and midterms and doable and not that hard. She's very kind and approachable, but I wasn't a big fan of hers. She would teach new material the day before the midterms that would be on the test the next morning. She also had lengthy homework assignments due every single week even if we had a project or an exam due the same week, so the class definitely kept me busy. Her quizzes were tricky and unfair in my opinion. It's not a terrible class since a lot of it is just identifying different types of experiments, but I don't think I would take another class with Dr. Roy again.
