Professor Liese is a really really nice guy. He is always very polite and considerate. He also has a great sense of fashion, best dressed professor I've seen so far, and understands students problems and circumstances. If you are looking for a professor who you can go to during study hours to help clear up any confusion you have, Liese might not be for you. He tries as best as he can but sometimes he needs to dumb it done a bit more. I have heard from several classmates that he made them feel stupid during office hours and this disuaded them from returning there again. I know he means well but sometimes he goes too fast or skips over ideas you are still figuring out because he assumes everybody is at a higher level when it comes to math. Getting a D in Professor Liese's class was my own fault and had nothing to do with him. If you have taken Calculus in high school, understand it clearly, and won't be needing much help, Liese is a very good option. Another great part of his class is he accepts late homework, drops your lowest quiz score, and drops your lowest midterm score if your final is higher than that score.

Liese is decent at presenting the material. He crammed a lot of chapters in the last week of the course, making it very hard to keep up at the end. His homework policy is pretty lenient when it comes to turning it in late. The fact that he collects homework at all sucks, but it helps a lot of the students. Bottom line, I will not be looking for him when I take calc 2. He was a very average teacher, and makes no attempt to connect with students.

I took Liese for Calc 2 and never taking a calculus class before until Calc 1 my first quarter made Liese's class impossible. I don't recommend him to anyone. Lectures: You might as well not show up to class because all he will lecture on is the theory of formulas, not how to apply the formulas... which is what you need for homework, quizzes and tests. Liese rarely does examples and when he does he tends to use variables instead of numbers which confuses students immensely. He also tries doing group activities where we learn a chapter on our own which doesn't help at all because no one knows what they are doing. Tests/Quizzes: If you can imagine the hardest problems from the homework, those are what will appear on tests and quizzes. Liese expects students to understand calculus on a much higher level than possible, especially if this is your second calculus course ever taken. Quizzes are pretty hard too and he rarely gives enough time. Everyone in my class failed a quiz once because he didn't give us enough time and he refused to drop it. EVERYONE IN THE CLASS FAILED. What teacher would just be okay with that?? Overall: Liese is an arrogant and pompous man. I don't encourage anyone to go to office hours unless you want to feel stupid or have to pretend to understand what he is saying. I went once for a question and he pointed and read me a line from the book.... That is not what I came to office hours for. He also gets flustered during lectures and isn't clear. He also always asks the class if his work is right which doesn't seem right to me. He blatantly will ignore the fact that students are confused most times because he only has one way to explain things. Unless you have a solid background in calculus, DO NOT TAKE LIESE.

I though Liese was a very difficult teacher. He taught the material in class and is easy to follow but always assigned a large number of problems for homework due every week. My one complaint is his tests, they were a lot harder than the problems we go over in class. If you take the workshop for his class, you'll pass

Professor Liese is new to Cal Poly for Fall 2008, and in some ways he teaches like that; homework and quizzes are a large part of the overall grade. Fortunately, his homework isn't too long, and he puts thought into the problems he assigns. His quizzes are of medium difficulty if you understood the homework pretty well. His tests are pretty hard, but he curves generously, so as long as you understand what he teaches you'll be alright. He explains things quickly and clearly, and is good at going back over something IN A DIFFERENT WAY if a student doesn't understand it. Definitely a low-stress math class.

Dr Liese was an ok teacher, I failed the final which dropped me to a D+. I got a 5 on the AP Calculus AB test last year without doing any homework for the entire year. Granted, 142 is harder, but I felt like Liese was not as good of a teacher as my high school calc teacher. He teaches like a textbook, so don\'t take him if you are a more kinematic learner.

I loved this guy, he made the class so easy. I don\'t know why but a lot of people in my class didn\'t like him very much. He is kinda shy and quiet but thats probably cause hes a new teacher. He explains things clearly and doesn\'t move on until everyone in the class understands the material. You turn in homework twice a week, but doing the homework (which was never more than 10 problems) is what gets you a good grade in the class. Easy group quizzes every week, the midterms were way easy, and the common final at the end wasn\'t bad at all. On top of all this, he curves the class in a way that can only help you. For example: I got an 86% on both my midterms and an 84% on the final, but I ended up with a solid A in the class. Amazing! Just study homeworks and all tests are a breeze.

Dr. Liese is a great, very straightforward, teacher. He presents the materials clearly, and he goes through his examples step by step without leaving anything out. If anything needs to be explained further, he offers more examples and takes the opportunity to make sure the entire class is keeping up. Once a week, he has the class teach a section to themselves in groups with a guided worksheet, which can be difficult the first few times, but eventually it becomes easy. His homework is somewhat weighty, but his homework quizzes each week are a piece of cake. However, his tests are pretty difficult, which should be expected for a calculus class. Overall he gives the best lectures. If you are looking to REALLY understand calculus, and not just someone who gives easy tests, Liese is the best choice.

Dr. Liese was not a very good teacher. I did all of my homework, went to every lecture, and reviwed my notes. Before the midterms I felt confident in the material that I was taught. However, his exams are way too difficult. Half of the material on the exam is stuff you have never seen before. The average in my class on the first midterm was a D. It is plain and simple, he is going to have to put a huge curve on this class if he plans on passing at least half of his students. I honestly do not reccommend him.

Great teacher! Speaks very clearly. Sometimes his lectures seemed a little rushed but he took the time to explain himself through homework questions the following days. I thought Liese was a great teacher. He went over the material clearly and if you didn't understand something he would go over the material in a different way to help connect the dots. He goes over homework questions in class through out the week and that usually take up about 20 min of class time so he really does want to help you learn the material. He also gives out review sheets before the exams but these aren't really necessary if you've been doing the homework - not using wolfram alpha or half assing it because that's not doing anything for you - and if you've been trying to understand what you did wrong on the quizzes when he gives them back. I would definitely recommend Liese, I even considered taking another math class beyond my requirement just to be in his class again!

Liese is a decent teacher and he tries to get the students involved with group activities but his tests are RIDICULOUSLY hard. He would literally pick the hardest most complicated integral you can think of that requires a u-substitution that you wouldn't think of in a million year. His tests are too challenging and tricky, they don't really test that you know the material.

I took 142 and 143 with Liese. He lectures out of the book and carefully explains every step. Takes 10-15 minutes at the start of every class going over homework problems and any other problems as requested by the students. He's nice and is very helpful during office hours if you have any problems (I only went there twice all year but he was very helpful and made sure you got the material). I definitely recommend taking him. Like any other course, you have to take time to study his material on your own. Don't expect to pass his tests by just going to the lectures and office hours. The tests are average difficulty, with one harder problem every midterm and in the final as well. There's no reason not to get an A if you put time into it.

Dr. Liese is an excellent professor. He explains the material well and is very approachable if you do not understand a certain topic in lecture. Overall a great professor and a very enjoyable class.

Dr. Liese's lectures allowed me to take the most organized notes I have taken in a math class. He teaches well enough where I don't need to ask that many questions, but when I do he answers them thoroughly and kindly. He drops your lowest quiz score and replaces your lowest midterm with your final's score. Homework load was adequate. Tests were fairly straightforward with maybe one or two problems you would have to think harder about. Oh and he is young and humorous, which makes going to class enjoyable. I recommend Dr. Liese.

All I can say is- thank god for the curve. I got Ds on both midterms, a C+ on the final and somehow passed the class with a B-. I thought Liese was a nice guy who definitely knew his stuff but wasn't very good at explaining the lessons. He was somewhat disorganized, always spending too much time on proving different theorems and leaving little to no time doing helpful example problems. Occasionally we would get into groups and literally teach ourselves a lesson which was a pain. The weekly quizzes were okay as long as you knew the material, however we only had the last 15 minutes of class to complete them which usually was not enough time. He assigns a LOT of homework, and he does grade some problems for accuracy. I probably would have failed if it wasn't for the curve that he computes at the end of the quarter. If you're struggling in his class, don't give up because there's still a good chance you could pass with the curve.

However, his tests are quite hard; both midterms were difficult and he always has a trick question. The final was okay, not super long but again, very difficult. I really did not like Liese. He knew his material (sometimes), but every single class was immensely frustrating. Half of the time he would do an example on the board, he would spent about 10 minutes on it, and end up with the wrong answer. He made the materials so much more complicated than it needed to be. By the end of the quarter, I would go to class simply to work on my homework, because I would learn more by reading from the textbook for 15 minutes than taking notes on his lecture. The good thing was that your final could replace one of your midterms, which really helped me. I got a C on the first midterm and an F on the second, so I was stressing out. The last week of the quarter I spent about 5 hours every day, and 10 hours the day before the test studying. I ended up getting a B on the final, but it took a lot of effort. Only take Liese if you're fine with having to self-study the material throughout the quarter.

I wish I would've taken regular calc 3 after this course. As this is said to be the most difficult calculus, Liese made it even harder. Coming out of high school calculus, I thought I had a pretty good understanding, but this class proved me wrong. He likes to go into the theory of pretty much everything, which is difficult when you don't even know the math side of it yet. His weekly quizzes were pretty hard even though they were group quizzes. The final was practically impossible and he definitely didn't give us enough time so nobody finished. I'd recommend him if you have a pretty good grasp on the theory behind everything in calc 1 and 2, but otherwise no.

Liese was a great teacher and actually inspired me to change my major which I did. I dont understand why he has such a low rating. But I went to his office hours about once a week and it helped tremendously to the point where I got an A. His class is straightforward theres no extra credit and he did curve the midterms slightly but the only part I didn't like were these group assignments. But the quizzes every week were straightforward and I studied a couple hours for each quiz. The homework is also part of your grade which is good and its graded fairly easy. I highly recommend him for a Math teacher. And I plan to take him in the future.

Professor Liese is an excellent teacher, I had him as a teacher for the entire year(MATH 141-143). His grading system is the best system I have encountered in Cal Poly. He drops your lowest quiz score and replaces your lowest midterm score with your final score if the final is higher. This system allows students to catch up if they mess up on their midterms and gives them the opportunity to redeem their grades. The lectures are above average, Professor Liese takes time to explain things that his students don't understand. His tests are pretty fair and he gives around 25 homework problems a week. Overall, Professor Liese is one of the best teachers that I have had in Cal Poly.

Dr. Liese honestly deserves a higher rating than he has on here. His teaching style is more dry, but he uses examples from the book, which can be helpful if you're trying to figure out what your notes are saying while doing homework. He is approachable in office hours, and is very helpful, just make sure you have your shit together and know what you want to ask him, because he will know if you're not putting in the effort and just want him to give you the answers, as opposed to being sincerely stuck on a problem. Tests aren't the hardest, and he drops the lowest midterm and grades on a curve as well. Overall a good professor to have.

Professor Liese is a really good teacher. He explains the material in class really well and goes pretty slow so you know what is going on. He answers questions in class really well and his office hours are super helpful, just don't go in not having attempted the problem at all. It's nearly impossible not to get 100% on all the homework assignments, which really boosts your grade. He also drops your lowest quiz grade and will replace a bad midterm grade with your grade on the final. He also curves the entire class at the end, so it's pretty easy to get a good grade if you study for the tests.

Liese's class was probably my favorite of the four Calculus classes I took at CalPoly, which is really saying something, as all four of my teachers were excellent. As an engineer, I was put in his class for business majors after all the normal sections were full, and it was a blast. Some of the other students had already had him for two quarters and there was a real sense of camraderie and community in the class. He made Taylor and Power Series, if not easy, then at least understandable, and was useful in office hours when I visited. Highly recommended.

Liese has very organized notes and his grading structure is EXTREMELY forgiving. Homework was worth 15%, quizzes 15%, midterms 20% each, and the final is 30%. However, quizzes are weekly and he drops your lowest quiz score at the end of the quarter, and if you do better on the final, it will replace your lowest midterm score. This really helped me because I got an 86 and 80 on the two midterms, but studied extremely hard for the final and got a 96 so I ended up with an A in the class. He also curves, so I ended up with an A even though I should've gotten an A-. In terms of conveying material, he is very organized, my only complaint is he doesn't do enough examples in class. He does go over homework problems at the beginning of class, however. The biggest issue is he has trouble explaining concepts in different ways so people understand them. Many people in my class didn't understand Taylor's inequality and he just couldn't figure out how to explain it in a different way. On the plus side, he is very attentive and can tell when students are confused. When learning binomial series he knew from looking at my class we had no idea what (k n) meant even though we should've, so he went over it. On the whole, he isn't an excellent professor, but above average and his grading system makes it easier to do well and redeem yourself if you screw up early on.

Calc 3 is notoriously the hardest in the Calc series, so that might have something to do with how much I hated this class. But honestly Dr Liese didn't help. I signed up for Dr. Liese hoping he would be a great Calculus teacher, and to be honest he wasn't. The first week I went to office hours he was very condescending with the questions I asked, along with other people's questions. Obviously we don't understand the material, that's why we're at office hours. I never went back to office hours after that first visit. His quizzes were way too long at times, but his first two midterms were fine. However many people fail quizzes, but it doesn't harm your grade that much later. He had a big review session before the final and told us he hadn't written the final yet at that time. So obviously nothing we reviewed ended up being on the final. He does curve though, so I ended up passing the class which is all I really wanted out of Calc 3 anyways. I wouldn't take him again though. Liese was a good teacher when he gave example problems. However, he really liked to confuse students with the background of each formula or theory so it was a bit misleading. His tests were really hard mostly because no one ever knew what the question was asking. On both midterms he gave us our tests back and said "I don't get why everyone missed this problem, all you have to do is know what its asking" but he would word the question so strangely that no one understood. The averages were often Ds. Its nice that the final was written by all the professors because it was much easier and I really like that we were able to replace one of our midterm scores with our final score. Thats the only reason I got a B in the class but I really had to study hard for this class. I wouldn't really recommend Liese to anyone but he isn't a bad choice if thats your only option.

Liese's lectures present information pretty well and he goes through a lot of different kind of examples. He's happy to go through homework problems so don't wait til the night before to do the homework so you can ask questions. The group assignments are kinda weird, but do sorta help explain the concepts behind everything. I felt like I had a good understanding of everything except Taylor Series by the end, but that might have just been me. The exams also have a true or false section to test concepts, but some of those seemed designed to trick you so don't just go with your gut. He also replaces your lowest midterm with your final grade if you do better which is a nice backup, and the first midterm (series and sequences) is a lot harder than the second.

Professor Liese is a nice guy without a doubt. The problem is that he only goes over the easy problems in class. Sometimes, he doesn't even do that. He has simply forgotten to give us certain information needed for the homework and as a result many of us relied heavily on the solution manual rather than his actual teaching. Then he asks you similar questions to the homework on quizes or on tests so if you didn't use the solutions manual as a guide you would not know how to do some of the problems. Also he always smiles when you ask him a question and is nice about it but talking to him doesn't always mean you'll get the right answer. Last comment- he has taken off points for me for carried over mistakes which I think is something math professors are generally told not to do.

Liese is not just a good math teacher, he is a really nice guy too. He is always very positive and understanding when it comes to his teaching methods, which is honestly really dope if you get bent over by a quiz or exam you did not study for. The only reasons why any given student has a bad grade in his class is because they did not show up for the MAJORITY of the class time, did not do the HW, neglected to take twenty minutes to study a quiz or failed to study enough for an exam. That being said, one of Liese's greatest qualities is that he really does try to get you the best grade you can get, so doing any or all of the things expressed above can still even net you a passing grade, you just have to really put in effort to at least learn the material for the exams. Bottom line, as with any class or professor, do the HW, study appropriately for exams and quizzes, and Liese will ensure you get the grade you deserve.

He gives a ridiculous amount of homework - he mentioned in class that students were complaining at some point, so I know I'm not the only one who thought that. The homework problems are really hard. Fortunately, he makes the test problems easier. But he is a very hard grader. You don't write one little thing the way he wants it and you lose more than half the credit. I passed the class so it's doable, but just prepare to spend most of your time on hw for this class. Combinatorics is a really tricky subject for some people and I'm sure I would have been challenged with any teacher, but Liese is not reasonable with the difficulty level of his exams. They are not reflective of the homework and require 100% percent command of the material to even pass. Basically they are the type of midterms which hardly anyone can get an answer to all the questions due to time constraints. If you are going to take this class with Liese, expect to have a C/D at highest for the whole quarter and then HOPE that the rest of the class pulls the curve down for you.

He provides examples in class however they are either very difficult or extremely easy which doesn't help because with the difficult examples we don't know how to do the "easy" problems and with the easy examples we don't have a chance to solve the hard difficult problems that will most likely be on the exams. In class he writes way too fast to keep up with so when you take notes he is done explaining what you are taking notes about before you finish. He rushes at the end of the class period often and even if it is confusing he will say sorry and then tell you to review your notes and hopefully by some miracle you will understand it without his explanation. All in all if you are able to write at light speeds you will do great so you would get the explanation you took notes about. He gives good explanations on the material if you are able to keep up and process it immediately. He gives really gracious curves. My GPA was scared throughout his entire class. The choice is your to take him good luck!

Liese is not a good teacher. He is a smart guy who doesn't understand how to tone down the material to the level of the class. Combinatorics is his specialty and he treats the class as though it should be their specialty too. Lectures are too fast, practice midterms only serve in getting you even more anxious for your tests because the solutions he provides are just numbers or one sentence here or there. It would actually be more effective to not be given those anxiety traps. This class was the most stressful class I've taken as a college student and I feel like it wouldn't have been that way with another professor.

i found him hot. that was actually a bit distracting during his lectures. lol. anyway. if u want a challenge and want to learn more than the minimum, take him. he gives a lot of incentive for doing extra credit problems that require creative thinking. i think his main flaw is that most of his lectures were faster than they should have been. but overall, i am happy i took combinatorics with him.

Professor Liese is a great person but he doesn't know how to teach, he only lecture about five times out of the quarter his exams are difficult. i wish he would lecture instead of just walking around the class.

The fact that Dr. Liese doesn't have above a 3.5 is beyond me. This man is an excellent instructor, don't believe otherwise. He's clear, articulate, and passionate. He's precisely what a math professor should be.

I really liked Dr. Liese! Yet, he makes really hard tests that don't always reflect his lectures and teaching. He is helpful during office hours though

I have taken this teacher multiple times and honestly it just keeps getting better. He knows what he is talking about, somehow he always understands what students are asking - stays on track but still is super fun to talk to. He is very smart and sometimes doesn't know how to make things easy but if you take the time to read through the book with his notes at hand it should be okay. He includes group work and activities that really help to grasp the material. Also, he's hot.

I learned that if I were to take up hunting, I should shoot deer, not bears, because a bear will hunt me back if I successfully wound it. Fascinating! I didnt know that the key to production and operations management was so brutally simple!
