First of all, Professor Sherman is a good teacher. He may sometimes go a little fast on the material without full explanations, but if you ask he will gladly go over what you did not understand. He\'s a very helpful teacher, as long as you ask and/or go to office hours. There was WebWork(online homework) in this course due every week, it was tougher than the material presented in class but very short(10-14 problems).

Do webwork, study for the quizzes and tests and you\'ll be fine. He\'s a genius and he\'s great during office hours. While you can tell that he\'s uncomfortable in front of the class, he knows the material like it\'s his job...because it is. Go to class and you\'ll do great, don\'t go and you\'ll pass.

Definitely very helpful, especially if you are struggling. I hadn\'t ever taken a calculus class and his lectures were very good. Webwork is annoying but it does help and if you have questions on it, he replies through email pretty quickly. I\'d wait til the last minute to do it and ask him questions and he\'d still respond in time. Passionate for math and pretty handsome! :]

Sherman was very helpful and didn't make you do a ton of homework, like other calc profs that give you 100+ problems. So that was a positive. He was very clear and has a true love of mathematics. Super cute too ;) I'm pretty sure I've seen him out on the town at 2 am one weekend haha.

Sherman is a great professor. As mentioned, his lectures are a little boring and he may seem a little awkward but he is a great teacher. He teaches at the perfect speed to understand the material. There are problems given to understand each section but are not counted toward the grade (they really help with the quizzes though. Quizzes every Thursday with the lowest score dropped, almost exactly like the problems he assigned or from the problems worked in class. Two midterms and a fina which are basically extended quizzes. If you have any questions during class he will gladly answer them and go over the problem again so you understand it. Take him

Doesn't Grade HW which is a plus but definitely do it because the quizzes are drawn straight from HW problems. Quizzes on a regular basis every Thursday and he answers questions right before each quiz which is very helpful.

He's a great professor who's lectures are informative and easy to pay attention to. He provides lots of examples while he lectures to really drive home what he's trying to get you to learn. There is HW, but its optional. If you want to do well though, you should do it. He's also helpful if you have troubles and talk to him during office hours

Yeah, I heard that this course is one of the hardest of all the other ones in Calc, but this guy makes it even worse: He rushes in class; while he writes on the board, he explains the lecture but blocks our view with his back turned against us, so we can't see what he's teaching about. Then when he moves away, he continues to talk, but we're too busy writing down everything and couldn't concentrate in paying attention at the same time, then he moves onto another subject. And when someone asks him to explain a homework problem, he does it but doesn't go to the very end. He excepts us to solve the whole problem, which sometimes we can't -- some people are usually fine in solving a problem up until the middle or near the end anyway.

He gave weekly quizzes on what you had learned that week. So it measures whether your understanding the material. He uses Webwork which is an online homework site. It is pretty cool but can be frustrating at times because of how difficult the problems may be. but you have unlimited amounts to try them. The way he teaches does back up the fact that he has a Ph.D from Columbia University. He is very knowledgeable and can prove any theorem for you. I would take him personally again. Midterms are okay they aren\'t that hard. I also took him for 141 and he presented material clearly. He has a sense of humor here and there. Very nice guy.

One of the best teachers in the math department. Just be careful that you don\'t have him right after he teaches the math majors. He might assume that you and your classmates know more than you actually do. His quizzes are easy and the homework was all online. He is very helpful during office hours and very approachable. You won\'t regret having him.

Great teacher, great class. All the material he presents is very clear and almost precisely what will be on his quizzes/midterms. He teaches practically everything to the difficulty it will be presented on exams. Minimal but challenging homework (~20 problems online). Best teacher at Cal Poly by far.

The class was very boring, homework questions and notes... that\'s it. I enjoyed the quiz and test days because they went by a lot quicker than the lectures. The class was very awkward a lot of the time due to his way of teaching. For example, he will asks if anyone has questions, and if not, he will just stand there and wait for 5 minutes explaining that we can\'t move on yet... until somebody final raises their hand and asks something. If you took AP Calculus AB, this class will be even easier, especially at cal poly because AP Calculus AB includes much of the material Calc II does. Further, Cal Poly\'s quarter system makes the calculus series different than most other schools. Cal Poly goes up to Calc IV, while most schools go to Calc III.

Idk what to say about Sherman. His lectures were very boring and sometimes he just made things more complicated than they were. I got a 4 on the AP AB Calc and an A in my calc class but his class was different. He started to confuse me on concepts I already knew. The webwork was a pain and the tests were semi-hard but i never studied. Maybe I just need some time to acclimate to college. I probably wouldnt take him again but i didnt hate his class.

Professor Sherman, without a doubt, is one of my favorite professors here at Cal Poly. He may seem a bit awkward, but our class always makes him comfortable by cracking jokes and laughing at his really lame jokes. He presents the material well, and if you put SOME effort in, you can easily get a B, minimum. His tests and quizzes are really fair and simple. There aren't ever any tricky questions. He just wants to know if you know the material or not. The lecture may be boring at times, but that's how any math class can be. I'm took him for MATH 142, I am currently taking him for MATH 143, and I plan on taking him for MATH 241. He knows his material well. If you ever have a question don't be afraid to stop him to ask. Great guy

Professor Sherman is an excellent teacher overall, and I would definitely recommend him for this class. Sherman knows the material very well, and although he makes small errors in writing down problems from time to time (like anyone would), he can answer any question you may have about the material very clearly. He also shows some interesting examples and proofs. Homework problems made up about 10% of the grade, and were assigned weekly on Webwork. I'd recommend doing the book problems first, the web problems are sometimes more advanced. Test problems were all fair, usually similar to examples from the lecture. Midterms are 25%, and the final is 35%. The lowest midterm score can be replaced if the final is higher, meaning it can be worth 60%! I earned a C because I didn't spend enough time on the new material for the final, it could have been a B.

Her quizzes are really easy and his midterms are fair. He is a good professor that knows his material but sometimes he cannot communicate the material to the students. A word of advice he is a hard grader so make sure you go over your work. I really screw up because of algebra errors if it wasnt for that i would of ended with a c or b. Take him just put work into webwork since some problems are challenging.

I took Sherman for 142 and 143 and got a B in both classes. At first, he was a little intimidating, because he is extremely smart and makes everything sound so simple and easy. You have to make an effort to make sure you really understand everything. Webwork... some problems were really hard, but you have a week so there's no excuses. One time I was really sick and slept through the deadline and he extended it, what a nice guy!! My advice for quizzes is to do ALL the suggested problems out of the book for the sections he's quizzing on. Sometimes just a few numbers are changed. Tests aren't usually too bad. You need to memorize a lot, but if you've been studying you should be fine. Final is cumulative but a bit easier I think. For 143, MAKE SURE you study lines, planes, and how to calculate intersections.

Professor Sherman really knows what he is talking about. He explains the material very clearly and gives fair exams. The midterms are pretty fast paced and the final primarily concentrates on material from the last part of the quarter. The only way to really do well in this class is to do a ton of practice problems. Sherman explains the material well in class but you have to learn it for yourself. Sherman also curves the class at the end of the quarter.

This teacher is great. We don't have hw but he assigns practice problems which are exactly similar or easier than the weekly quizzes we have. His quizzes tests you on the basics only. I go to admit this midterm and finals are a little harder because there's a lot of stuff but if you study the little tricks to each section, you can ace the midterms and exams. His lecture and notes in class are very clear and he presents it in a very understandable manner. The great part is that he gives examples of what hes trying to explain and it's similar to the hw so you understand the hw. I suggest doing the beginning problems of the suggested problems because usually the quizzes only cover those. Overall, this teacher is great in every aspect. I highly suggest this teacher.

Prof Sherman is a brilliant mathematician. This is evident is his lectures. Throw any math problem in his way, he'll solve it. He doesn't give homework which is nice; however, you must force yourself to practice. Your grade depends on quizzes, midterms, and final. Study study study. Prof Sherman is kind and fair- this is apparent in his grading. Talk to him with any problems you have in grading/coursework/scheduling, and he'll try and iron out any predicaments. I recommend this prof!!

Professor Sherman is a pretty straightforward teacher, which fits very well with my learning style. He simply gets up there, presents the material, provides examples, and asks if everybody understands and clarifies any confusion. Raise your hand and ask a question in class if you don't get something, and he'll explain if there's time (sometimes he just needs the full 50 minutes to get through the material). I never went to his office hours, so I can't say if he's helpful in them or not. Quizzes every Friday were pretty straightforward, as were the midterms and final. He does curve the class based on the final grade of the class (not of the final exam), though I'm not sure how much. I ended up with an A in the class and I was happy and didn't question anything. Overall, he's a great professor, and a sort of awkward/weird guy. I found it entertaining. I definitely recommend him!

We took 6 quizzes in the class and could drop one (or skip one which would automatically be dropped) and 2 midterms. The second midterm was a lot easier than the first. The final was pretty difficult but there was a curve to the class. I went into the final with a B+ and ended up with an A- and I am pretty sure I did not do too well on the final. He was really helpful in office hours. His homework was not mandatory but if you do not do homework then you will have a lot harder time doing well in his class. His lectures were very systematic and organized, which I liked a lot. He did a lot of examples when he was teaching.

Sherman is a very straight forward teacher. I had a MTWR schedule. Every Thursdays, we had a quiz. The first half of the period was dedicated to questions and answers. We took the quiz during the second half of the period. Some of his questions on the quiz are very similar to the homework problem in the book. There are some students who struggle because they do not do the homework at all. Homework is not collected, but it is a great idea to do them anyways. As weird as it sounds (lots of students may disagree), I found the series chapter to be the easiest part of Calculus III. He covered this chapter the most (for five weeks) and I felt the other sections to be a bit rushed. Sometimes, during the lectures, Sherman ended up skipping steps, making everything more confusing. During those times, I felt that I understood more from reading the chapters instead. The quizzes were quite easy and straightforward. Sherman ended up dropping the lowest quiz (out of the six). He also allows students to miss a quiz without penalty. The midterms (2 of them) were a bit harder than the quizzes. There were a few true or false questions on it and more questions that require you to put what you know together. The final was kind of difficult for me. Some of the questions were not covered in class, but Sherman expected you to learn them before the final exam. On the final, the question wasn't as straightforward as on the quizzes and midterms. Sherman does curve the class though. The only thing he puts on on PolyLearn are the quiz scores.

Shermanator is a very interesting guy. He will not make eye contact with you as he is slightly awkward socially but its kind of cool. His lectures are pretty dry and I recommend keeping up with the homework nightly (but no one does). There are weekly quizzes of 3 questions each, usually pulled off the homework. His midterms and 5 questions, with the final being 10 questions. The quizzes are worth 22% of your grade, midterm 1 is 22%, midterm 2 is 22%, and the final is 34%. His tests are difficult. I got an F and a D on the midterms but then studied hard and pulled off a B on the final to get a C. If you are a procrastinator and don't do homework because its not graded, you probably won't do well in his class. Especially 241

Sherman is a nice guy and a decent teacher, but I think there are better options out there. Personally, I need engaging professors to learn a subject well, particularly math, and Sherman is quiet and dull, though he does present material clearly if you're lucky enough to snag a front seat and pay attention. You need to do the optional homework in order to do well on the tests and quizzes. The only thing that really bugged me is the little tricks (obscure trig identities) he puts on his tests. You can fully comprehend the material but only get a measly amount of partial credit because you can't simplify the equation. Other than that, he is a fair teacher but not my first choice.

(Sherman is to Cal Poly what Professor Binns is to Hogwarts) Now to be very specific: His lectures: He's very monotone and can be difficult to pay attention to at times, but he's usually pretty clear and straightforward if you can stay awake. He often teaches the concept for a few minutes, then spends most of the class time going over examples. Sometimes he gets caught up in proofs which, frankly, I didn't care about knowing. And sometimes he gets lost in his proofs and confuses himself, so he spends 10 minutes mumbling to himself until he figures it out. His grading: He gives six quizzes, all worth 22% of the grade, two midterms each worth 22%, and the final's 34%. You can opt out of one of the quizzes, but he won't drop the lowest one, so if you ever feel unprepared for a quiz, you should opt out of it. The quizzes are usually 3 questions each worth 4 points. He'll qive partial credit, but don't rely on that. I thought the problems were usually pretty fair. They're never that difficult if you've adequately prepared (usually by doing the homework). Speaking of which, the homework: he assigns homework, but won't collect it. I would only do the odd ones usually (because the answers are in the back) and that would be good enough. Before any tests or quizzes, Sherman would do review on the material where you can ask questions. Lastly, he may curve the class at the end. You won't know by how much though, so you can't strategize your grade or anything. I've never been to his office hours, so I can't talk about that. But I have heard that he's awkward and unhelpful. (but I can't confirm that) My impression: He's not bad, but he's not that great either. He's very okay. In the end I thought he did a pretty decent job in teaching, even if he wasn't the most exciting professor.

Sherman was a great professor. He taught clearly and made it easy to understand the material. The weekly quizzes are really easy. His midterms and final exams are hard, and you need to study the material very well for them. His homework load is to assign the entire book and expect you to do as much as you can, which is unrealistic. Sherman is a great guy. You can tell he cares a lot about his students as he answers just about any question, no matter what the topic. His writing can be a little messy and he occasionally has some pacing problems, but he always gives us the information that we need. His quizzes were a bit tricky, so don't assume anything. At first I wasn't very fond of Sherman's lecturing style. It gets confusing cause he tends to make little mistakes in his proofs and it kinda just confuses you when hes constantly making his own notations and changing up the proofs after you already wrote it down. However, after reflecting on the quarter, I want to say that he's a fair professor. His midterms for the most part had problems that you should've been able to do if you understood the homework. The final was more than fair and there was a fat curve in the class. Also, homework is 22 percent! How awesome is that! There are 2 midterms, which consist of an even distribution of computational and proofs and also an entire page of definitions which should be easy points. His grader was kind of a hardass though. But anywho, he's teaching linear algebra again in winter I believe. His class isn't impossible though. You just have to do your homework and put in the time. Very clear in how he presents the material. The textbook is not great, but it's a math text, so not much is expected . Like any difficult course, if you attempt to work through understanding the material prior to class, the lecture will be your aid. If you show up to lecture without any prior introduction to the material then you're probably going to struggle to keep up with the current material and your other classes. I've talked with other physics majors, and all 5 have said that they did not get into Fourier Series or basic PDEs. Professor Sherman did a great job setting the stage for Laplace Transforms and Fourier Series (if you take you'll know what I mean). If your field of study involves Fourier Series, you'll want to take this class, even if it's your last strictly math course (ME majors). The weekly quizzes (7 total), and two midterms were all weighted equally, 22% each. This means keep up with the recommended homework (not collected), so you crush the quizzes. If you understand the homework, the quizzes won't be anything unlike the homework, therefore you'll be able to secure a solid average for the cumulative quiz total.

In a sentence, Sherman is a good teacher. He displayed the material clearly, was approachable, concise, structured, organized, and in general just on top of things. He was very on time with things, had tests that were of appropriate difficulty given the examples and homework and has a nice open office system in the fishbowls. All that said, the class didn't leave room for a ton of fun, so some people may get bored during lectures. Overall, 0 issues though. If i had to summarize him in a word, it would probably be "concise" due to the cut and dry nature of the class. Not much theory going on, which is honestly probably why i think some people may find it a little more on the boring side.

As a graduate coordinator, he is terrible. I don't know if the issue is that he doesn't care about the job, or he places all other aspects of his life ahead of this job, but he appears not to care at all. In the class where he trains grad students to teach, it was clear that he was essentially winging half of his once a week lectures. I personally did not get much useful information at all from this seminar. The thing that is serious enough for me to get on here and slam him is the INABILITY TO GET A HOLD OF HIM. I really don't care if this is his second year on the job, he should at least respond back to email questions with "I don't know, this person might." However, he does not respond back to emails, and I mean sometimes EVER. If it is a quarter where he is on sabbatical, he is nowhere to be found in person. This would not be an issue if his signature and permission was not required for nearly every aspect of the grad program. He makes being a grad student so much more stressful.
