Les made his lessons extremely straightforward and understandable. As long as you focus and listen during lecture and make a good cheat sheet for the exams, there is no reason to get lower than an 85% in his class.

Les is a good statistician, not a good teacher. I took stats in high school and found the subject really easy for me, but when I got to his class he taught the same concepts in a very confusing manner. His examples are terrible and he has a tendency to start an example, realize he's doing something wrong, then completely change everything that he originally started doing. This killed me. He also likes to "joke" around during class, but it's more annoying then anything. His tests are also extremely hard in comparison to what he teaches during class and what he assigned for homework. He also did not give any partial credit and nor did he explain why you got answers wrong. His method of grading is also extremely terrible, and is completely competitive. The only good thing about his class was that he would let us out 15 minutes early pretty regularly. I would definitely not recommend his class to anyone.

This class was pointless...no one ever seemed to get what was going on, and Professor Pennelly was not a good teacher. Going to class didn't teach me anything, and the book was difficult to understand without a background in statistics. I walked out of there with just as much knowledge of statistics as I had going in. I do not recommend him at all.

Professor Pennelly is a great teacher and a very nice one. If he sees you struggling in class, he will help you out and will not make you look stupid. He likes stopping in between the two hours to give some jokes. Some are funny, some not so much. He definitely knows his stuff though. He will tell you what to study on the tests and will take out stuff that he is not able to cover in class. Amazing teacher!

It was absolutely the worst class in the world. Not because of the teacher but the subject. I've never despised learning so much. Les was cool and tried to make stats fun. But in the end, stats is never fun. Sorry.

Prof. Pennelly was probably not the greatest professor. In fact, I would have to say he was one of the worst. The lectures were not organized at all... his notes were posted online, but made no sense.. he never did full examples in class, and the homework is pretty pointless for the tests. The final wasn't cumulative but was also NOTHING like his notes and he tells horrible jokes in the middle of the class that aren't funny and make you want to get up and leave. Horrible class.

Les is a professional statistician who works in the medical field. On the first day, he told us that he likes to teach as a fun side job. As a result, he has no idea how to present material to make the class understand. He was a really nice guy and I sometimes felt bad seeing him struggle, but it was still frustrating to try to extract useful information out of his convoluted lectures. In the class, he gives two midterms and a non-cumulative final. There are 2 quizzes, one pop quiz (worth very little), and homeworks (also worth very little). To do well, you have to try to get some meaning out of his notes on blackboard, because he puts true/false questions on the test to see if you understand the theory behind the problems. You are allowed to bring a notesheet to class on test day, so I would always take key points and equations off his notes and put them on my note sheet in tiny font. In this way, I got around understanding a lot of concepts. The only way to get through the class is to try to cater to what Les wants, and so you end up coming away with very little knowledge. I'm pretty frustrated because this class is important for my major, but I'm just glad to be done with it. All in all, I'd recommend taking Les only as a last resort. I don't think the other teachers for 218 are much better though, so if you must take him, then just accept that you'll be confused a lot and go for it.

honestly, take this class with someone better if you can. he is a professional statistician and should stick to that because he has no idea how to present information clearly. if you are taking it be ready to be confused and join a study group that is offered. this class with pennelly is so frustrating, and not worth taking if you have another option!

Much like the reviews below, Les's class is very confusing and hard to stay up to date with. If your struggling, he will go out of his way to help you. He also makes an effort to give passing grades if he sees you are trying. He tells outlandish and generally not funny jokes in class, but it helps because stats is so dry. His final was NOT cummulative. Make sure to do his HW, its worth points and if you do it u'll be set for tests.

The only thing I will say is the homework is good, and the quizzes are good as well, but when it comes to the tests the true/false really mess you up and he words the problems very differently than from the homework or quizzes, which is strange because he writes the quizzes as well as the tests. Stats is boring no doubt about that and he tries to teach what he knows but it is hard to think like Les sometimes. The only thing that helps in the class is to do the homework, that will really help you on the quizzes, study your quizzes and homework and his lecture notes and lastly bring a good sheet of notes to the test with some examples to jog your memory from studying.

Very bad teacher. His lectures are confusing and do not match his tests. You are left to fend for yourself and learn the material on your own. He also has a horrible grading scale and grades you based on how other people in the class do compared to yourself. For example, if other people cheat and get an A and you also get an A- you really will be getting a \"B\" on that test because other people scored higher than you. If you have a choice, DO NOT take pennelly

les was a nice guy and all...but he was the most terrible and ineffective teacher i have had. He\'s a professional statistician and should stick to it. I do not know why he chose to be a teacher, he has no communication skills, frequently makes errors in class, and his lectures are extremely confusing. The textbook for this course is slightly unreadable so take this course with a teacher who can explain the material. This guy summed up: Spends the most time on things of least importance, and spends the least time on important things

Les is indeed a professional statistician, and he would sometimes tell us stories about his profession. It\'s pretty interesting, and you can tell he really enjoys teaching this class. He tries his best to break it down and clearly explain each topic. Sometimes I think he goes slow, but there are people in the class that still doesn\'t understand it. The homework he assigns are easy if you just go over the examples he provides. His notes are online, and he basically goes over it in class. I attended every lecture because it makes more sense than going over it by yourself. He basically tells you what is going to be on the test, and if you go to his office hours at the ave, he\'ll even tell you what to put on your cheat sheet. I really enjoyed this class. Les made it easy and enjoyable. The homework doesn\'t take too long. There are two small group projects, which can be done in 30 minutes with a partner. The final wasn\'t accumulative. He lets you bring in a sheet of notes for each test except the first one. He curves the class, but it\'s hard not to pass. TAKE LES!

Take Pennelly if you don\'t care about STATs and just want an easy A

Les does not give a whole lot of homework. But his tests are confusing, especially the second one. He does not explain the criterea well and many of the students were extremely confused. He teaches like we are in kindergarten, which is fine if you are not interested in learning a lot about stats. If you havent taken Stats, this class is still pretty easy. One big Project and 3 tests. I highly recommend this if your looking for an easy Stats class with a light workload

I loved les as a person but as a teacher he was horrible. I went to class but ended up so confused about what he had taught I had to ask my friend who was a math major to help me. Les mentions over and over how he's a professional statician, so I know he knows his stuff, but he honestly does not know how to teach to students. also, the way he asks questions on his test was so different from the way he asked questions on the homework, so I did horribly on the second test although I knew the overall material quite well. I really tried to do well in this class but he made it so difficult for me to learn.

He is a really nice guy. He does not explain things very well though. If you do take him his quizzes/homework don't reflect the tests. The tests are much harder that you expect. Les is a really nice guy, and if you work hard and make an effort to show him that you want to be successful then you will be fine. Even if you slack a lot you will pass the class easily with a C because he's so nice -- but if you want an A you need to go to class, do homework, study, and go to office hours if you're confused. Not a bad teacher at all. He underestimates how hard his tests are so don't believe him when he says it will be easy!! But quizzes are overall pretty easy if you do homework. And sit in the front if you can because otherwise it's easy to nod off, plus his chalk handwriting is sometimes hard to read.

Great teacher! Highly recommend him. The class consists of a few quizzes and four tests, none are cumulative so you only need to learn two or three chapters at the most and don't have to worry about anything else. For the last two tests you get a sheet of notes which makes it a lot easier. Also everything is curved so it really helps everyone out to get a good grade. I would recommend going to his office hours because he really helps you out and gives you pointers for the tests. Overall, greta class and teacher and would take him again.

First of all, Les is SUCH a nice guy. He puts in extra effort to be funny and not make the lectures boring. Second off, the only way not to pass is to be a lazy, whiny student! half of the class complains about numerous things but the fact is we are students, we are here to STUDY. The material for this class is not hard if you STUDY and do the homework. There are 4 tests (including the final) and all are non cumulative which is super helpful because there is so much information. He can make it comprehensive so hes doing you a favor. i liked this class and found it interesting, i would recommend him for sure

I am horrible at math, and horrible at theory and well, statistics is both. I went into the quarter very worried that I would not be able to pass the class. However, Les was extremely helpful, held plenty of office hours and even routinely sets aside time after class at the Avenue were he will help you with any questions you may have. He may not give the most clear explanations of things all the time, but he is willing to work with you as long and as much as you need to understand the material, and that is what I consider a good professor. I also respect that he has real world experience in statistics and doesn't purely teach off of theory, but what he knows from being a statistician. Most of his examples stem from his career working in the pharmaceutical industry, which makes them easier to understand and more applicable to real life.

HIGHLY recommend this professor! He cares so much and wants everyone to succeed. He gives announced quizzes at least once a week that are not difficult and force you to keep up with material which is really nice around midterms. He lets you use a page of notes on every midterm and the book and notes on the final. Final nor midterms are cumulative! Strongly recomend going to lecture and writing the page of notes and you can get an A.

Les is a great teacher! His class consisted of 2 midterms and 1 final, none of which were cumulative. He did not collect homework, but assigned it. It's probably in your best interest to do the homework and keep up with it. His quiz questions were almost always from multiple homework problems. His tests were a bit more difficult than those quizzes, but definitely not impossible. Les loves teaching Statistics and it definitely keeps the students more engaged in the class as well. He grades his class on a curve, but typically if you have a 90% or above, you're guaranteed an A- or above. Sometimes his grading method (the curve) was a bit confusing, but he will explain it to you if needed. Go to his office hours if you're having trouble with something. His office hours are extremely helpful! Overall, a good class, but be prepared to do your share of work if you want to do well.

Les is a really great guy! At first he may seem like he's trying too hard with the silly humor and corny jokes, but by the end of the quarter it's actually really funny and I promise you'll learn to appreciate him. Now on to the important stuff: his class was pretty difficult, especially if Stats is not your strong point. His lectures and his notes can be a little scattered but if you go to his office hours, he will be more than happy to clear things up for you. Plus you get extra participation points if you attend often enough. He is very fair in that he allows you to have a full page of notes front and back for the midterms and final, which is definitely helpful because his tests are tough! The first one is undoubtedly the easiest, so make sure to study hard for that one and start your grades out right. There are quizzes pretty much every week, which are good grade boosters if you study right. Again, go to office hours and he usually hints at what will be on the quiz that week as well as answer any other questions you have. He is a fair grader and tries to give students as many points on tests and quizzes as he can. The only major complaint I have is his grading style. He grades on a legitimate curve so that only a certain number of students receive As, Bs, Cs, etc regardless of what they actually earned in the class. I don't think this was fair to students who earned Bs but received Cs just because that was the way the class was split up. However if you work hard enough he definitely recognizes that, and he always seems to be rooting for his students. If you spend time studying for this class, ask lots of questions, and ATTEND OFFICE HOURS you will do just fine.

I would highly recommend anyone who is reading the previous reviews and thinking that Pennelly is going to be a good choice of professor for this class to think again... He may be an expert statistician, but he is a horrible teacher. He presents things one time and expects you to understand how to do it. The homework and quizzes are easy and he says they will prepare you for the midterms, but they don't. He puts problems on the tests that he admittedly knows he didn't teach students how to do, but wants to see who can figure it out. ALSO, he grades one a real curve, so he only gives the top 3 students A's. So even if you work your butt off and in terms of the points you earn get an A, don't get excited because he might still give you a B...GOOD LUCK!

While Mr. Pennelly is a good guy, he is not a good teacher. The way he explains material is confusing and impossible to understand. There is a quiz basically every class and he doesn't allow make ups if you miss. His tests are difficult and he likes to put in challenging questions to see who can get them right. Also he grades on a curve so if you aren't one of the top three students, don't expect an A.

This guy is a joke, he wastes at least 10-15 minutes of each class saying these corny jokes and when you don't understand the material and ask a question he'll say oh we dont have time "come to my office hours if you dont get it". I went into this class hoping that it would be my first A at Cal Poly. I did every homework assignment. Paid attention. Attended every class. And prepared awesome study guides for myself (which he lets you use on the tests if you can cram onto one sheet of paper). The first midterm is fairly easy going over mean, medians, and mode. However, every midterm after that bacomes progressively harder as Les becomes progressively worse of a teacher as the material goes on. His jokes are a nice break in the class. And he is a very nice, funny guy. But when you aren't able to attend office hours due to jobs and a full class load like me, he's not the best.

Les is truly a nice guy and loves stats. Unfortunately, he is not the greatest professor. His lectures are scattered and confusing to follow along. He is smart and knows his stuff, but is just not good at teaching it to students. Even after going to office hours I don't think it helped much except knowing what material would be on the quizzes/tests. He tries to be funny (which I appreciated, though it was cheesy) and is really nice if he gets to know you, but it doesn't help much in the end since he grades on a bell curve. If you can, try to take someone else for STAT 218, unless you know a lot statistics to begin with.

I think Les is actually pretty funny and is obviously very knowledgeable about statistics, however, I just think he teaches the material like we have been studying it for years. Every lecture he would speed through the material and teach it in a really unorganized and confusing way. I studied the amount of hours he suggested for each chapter and was still horrifically confused for most of the quizzes and all of the tests. He's an approachable guy, but when you ask him questions, he speeds through the answers and makes you more confused than you were before. He tries to be a good teacher. 2 tests and a non-cumulative final, so basically just 3 tests but the last one is super long. there is a quiz almost every class, decently easy if you understood the material from the day before. Les tries really hard to be a good professor, but just ends up failing a lot of the time. The class is really fast paced and if you do not understand something immmediately, be sure to seek out extra help otherwise you will fall behind in the quarter and end up wondering if you will pass. Luckily, he does a huge curve for the final grades so generally more than 1/2 the class gets Bs. The almost daily quizzes will bite you in the ass if you didn't do the homework, but they should be pretty easy if you did. Ask a lot of questions in class to clarify the concepts. Make sure you do the homework even though it isn't collected. The tests are really hard. Overall, it was a hard class, easier if you got the statistics concepts easily, and he is an average teacher who tells really bad corny jokes.

Awful. In so many ways, but to name a few: 1) Lectures largely on math concepts but then tests a lot on conceptual stats. Which brings us to the next problem. 2) The book is very wordy, as are his lecture notes. And considering this is a support course, you can bet your ass you'll never sit down to read the stupid thing to study. 3) Like with his lectures, his homework is mostly just math. Not helpful for his exams. 4) He is so boring. Not engaging. Tells cheesy jokes only to get blank stares. 5) It's a two hour class spend in a warm room that just makes you want to take a nap. Only pros: He curves if your test grade is above the class average, and the class is four quarter exams with no cumulative final. I'm just telling you though, it's not worth it.

The first test he gave us was incredibly easy, but the second test was killer. I got off to a rough start with the professor. We knocked heads the first few classes because he gave quizzes based on memorization of homework questions, things that were not covered in class at all, etc. However, once he realized that several people in the class were extremely unhappy with the way he was grading tests and quizzes (to the point where I was about to go to Student Ombuds), he completely turned it around. We tried to coach him through being more clear on expectations, test material, etc., and it made a huge difference. He has a very clear desire to help people learn, but is not a very good teacher all of the time. My advice is to be very clear on questions that you ask him because he has trouble understand that most people in the class just can't comprehend what he's talking about. Also, be active about talking to him about your grades on tests, etc.

Les Pennelly is a friendly, effective, conscientious professor. He is dedicated to teaching his students and shows time and time again that he wants his students to fully understand the material, and not just superficially "know how to do it". He knows where students typically struggle and adjusts his lectures accordingly. He is very responsive to students and is very patient and thorough when answering students' questions. He assigns a very reasonable amount of weekly homework (usually just 5 or 6 problems) and quizzes to make sure you are understanding the material and to keep it fresh in your mind. He is very helpful in office hours, he sometimes even will drop hints of what's going to be on the next midterm. My one warning is that the second two midterms and the final are very difficult. He challenges your understanding of the material and makes it very easy to do poorly because every question is worth a lot of points. So beware. Besides that, he is a fair grader and will give you partial credit if you demonstrated partial understanding of the concept. The second minitab assignment is a pain in the rear but still not too difficult if you do it right. All in all, Les is a great professor, I learned a lot about statistics and he made the material interesting and applicable to the professional world. Also, he is hilarious. His jokes are terrible but it's funny because he knows it. The more you participate in the class the more fun you'll have. He really is a nice guy and wants to get to know each of his students and wants to teach them something valuable that they'll bring with them wherever they go.

Les is a nice guy, but does not understand how to teach his students. I've taught myself everything on my own time because his lectures are confusing and unclear. His tests do not reflect what he focuses on in lecture and often include aspects that are hidden in the study guide or mentioned momentarily in class. He grades homework fairly difficult and doesn't provide answers for you to check your own work or learn from the assignment. If you are good with stats, this course will probably be fine for you, but if you struggle at all I would recommend taking another class.

Les is a cool guy, and he's fairly enthusiastic about the information, which is always good. It'll help a lot to have taken some stats before this class. He'll try to help you if you're struggling but you need to go to his somewhat inconvenient office hours. He'll tell corny jokes which will probably get little to no reaction from your class, because nobody wants to be in math class and college kids are too cool for Popsicle-stick humor, I guess. His tests are straightforward, except you really do need to pay attention in class or read the notes carefully because he likes putting tricky conceptual questions on the midterms/final.

GO TO OFFICE HOURS. I didn't go to office hours in the beginning of this course and did terrible on the first midterm, but then I went to office hours and aced the next two tests! I recommend taking this course. Professor Pennelly is a chill guy. The tests are difficult, but if you put in the time then you should be okay. PLUS he lets you use cheat sheets on the tests. This class is pretty difficult but it's so satisfying when you take the time to really understand the concepts.

Les is a great professor and really takes the time to answer everyone's questions, even if the answer seems obvious. The class content is pretty straight forward if you make sure to do the suggested homework. Go over your notes like he tells you to, it really helps on the in class quizzes and midterms. You also get cheat sheets on tests, which definitely helped my grade. Overall, I had a really good experience in Les's class this quarter and highly recommend him to all looking to take Stats 218. He turned out to be one of my favorite professors at Cal Poly so far, and I don't even like math.

Go too office hours, and always ask questions. He wants people to succeed, and is completely willing to take his time and work with you. The class is very difficult, just listen to what he says. On another note, in my class people complain about him, but when asked, they never went to office hours. HM.

Les is an extremely nice guy and very encouraging and willing to help. BUT the class is pretty difficult and in my opinion even going to office hours did not really help me overall in terms of my grade. The second midterm was very difficult he curved it like 15 points. It can also be difficult because the whole class is graded on a curve so in order to get a B in the class you have to be higher than the overall average. Even with a lot of effort I still got a C.

Oh Pennelly, he really is the nicest guy but he is so bad at presenting information to understand. You MUST go to office hours because in office hours he is way more clear about what he wants you to understand for the tests. He expects you to understand basic stat concepts and then on the test he will put really hard problems that you never have done before expecting you to figure them out because you know the basic concepts. Thankfully he grades on a curve so as long as you do better than the rest and go to office hours( and trust me go to office hours, even if you feel like you understand the material) it's not THAT hard to get a good grade but definitely taking this class with this professor will take extra time out of your schedule. Also, hardcore check all your midterms, quizzes, and homework with others because at least for me he was very inconsistent with his grading and I mean VERY inconsistent. He really cares about his students and wants people to succeed. For both midterms and final you are allowed one sheet of notes however, my class convinced him for one of the midterms to let us use all of our notes AND the book because so many of us had other midterms that week. So while he is REALLY bad at teaching he is honestly super nice and helpful you just have to put the time and effort in.

Alright, Les is not a bad guy or professor! I went into this class super scared cause I suck at math and sciences in general! Heck on the first day i was going to drop this class because the first thing he said was " My test are usually really hard, but I dont mind." Like super dickhead of him to say....Come to find out he only said that so we would study really hard for the first midterm, cause TBH it was not that bad. His weekly quizzes are easy points if you just study the lecture notes beforehand..These should be easy points that you get and keep in mind he takes everything into account, so if you're at a 78 and he sees that your quiz average was a 9, he will probs bump you to a be. Homework is also very easy only 4-5 of them are due... again you want to get good scores on these. He assigns suggested hmwk with answers! Highly recommend you do them, cause most of these show up on quizzes. Now for ever midterm and final you get a cheat sheet (front and back)!! The test ARE NOT HARD! BUT YOU DO NEED TO KNOW THE CONCEPTS AND WHY YOU ARE DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING....this is where going to office hours is RECOMMENDED!!! He really does want you to succeed and does not like to give D's if you are really putting in the effort. SO GO TO OFFICE HOURS... he basically tells you what to know and sometimes gives answers. ALL in all he ain't that bad, a little boring at times but not bad!
