If you're thinking about 215, Main is the obvious choice. You will interact with both in the class. We had discussions about planning issues that were substantial and interesting. She also prepared slides and presentations for us. Metzger, on the other hand was patronizing and spent classes justifying herself and her ego by telling stories about her relatively narrow minded experience in the non profit sector. Take Main, wait list her if you can. She's 10x better I guarantee. Not only is she a really good planner but she is a great discussion facilitator. really enjoyed her class.

Received an A. Attendance is mandatory, you can only designate one miss day for the entire quarter and it cannot be the last day of class. I used my only miss day to attend a scholarship ceremony which she gave me the okay on. The class is amazing as you will get to learn about the community engage/public participation side of planning. You read through numerous publications and this gives you an insight about much ethics is a part of city planning. There is quizzes for almost every reading. I got an A because I did all the reading and treated the quizzes as if my life depended on every point. The memo has numerous stages, as your first submission will be a bad grade but don't feel bad because everyone gets a bad grade. You make revisions on it and the maximum grade you can get is between the grade you got on the first submission and an A. However, this is depending on how much corrections you make on your paper in accordance to her corrections/ suggestions.

I LOVE Kelly!! she is soo nice and understanding. She is not stressful to deal with at all and is really approachable. She is willing to take time to help you. She is more laid back compared to some CRP teachers. I highly recommend her to anyone!

Kelly has trouble staying organized and illustrating what we, as students, needed to accomplish for the quarter. She made it her mission to improve our writing skills, which made the quarter a bit more difficult. She was clearly stressed throughout the quarter, and it reflected i her approach to students. Not sure if she was like this in previous quarters, but her methods were generally effective. Kelly is extremely "nice." But this often impacts her ability to LEAD the class. I got a good grade in the class (A), but i'm not sure whether or not i'd recommend Kelly as a professor. She is more laid-back than professor Howard, but the class was often confusing and generally lame.

Professor Main is a great lady outside of the classroom, but struggles to connect with students and the problems they have in the class. She often rambles and doesn't address the important topics and tends to dwindle on the minor details that don't necessarily relate to the project. This studio requires outreach in another city and we are split into groups to help create a health element for said city. We are expected to write an entire chapter to present to the public about why health in a certain subject is important. The element itself would take seasoned professionals at least an entire 12 months to get the just first draft completed and another year to finalize the actual document. We are given the span of two quarters (410/411 are the same studios) to complete an extremely similar document (6 months). This seems unfair because it is and she doesn't give clear guidance as to the tasks needed, and lacks the delegation skills to present the tasks in a way that makes sense (basically the assignments are given out of order and if were rearranged, the material and tasks asked for would make a ton more sense). Although CRP majors are unable to avoid this class their senior year, this is basically a warning that the class is indeed a "sh*t show" and to be prepared for a mentally straining and sometimes overwhelming studio (I cried once because she literally asked too much of us as STUDENTS). Also, be submissive (teacher's pet) because she doesn't like people sticking up for themselves and suggesting better ways to complete things.

As a new instructor to Cal Poly, Kelly was getting the "feel" for how the CRP department operates. She is an EXCELLENT communicator & always willing to take 5 minutes to explain a situation more fully.

This might have been the most pointless class I have had. The work we completed could have been done in maybe 3 weeks if we were working at the rate we did in the 200 series. We would generally sit there for two to three hours before being given an assignment to do. She missed class alot for the tenure meetings and we never got our assignments back in less than a month, which made things difficult seeing as everything we did built on previous work.

So bad. This was, without a doubt, the least organized class I have ever taken. Unfortunately, it is part of a two quarter lab. This is the only lab where the product of our class is so poor that I dont include it on my resume. We had no feedback on our assignments, then on some random day a month later she would come in and tell us all how terrible it is and that we have to redo it. Oh, and by this time we have maybe 2 sections stacked onto the one she is referring to, so then you have to redo a months worth of work. She missed class constantly for tenure meetings. If you know you arent going to be available, take the quarter off. Dont waste our time with what could otherwise be a productive class. We had Keith as an assistant professor for this lab series. He was great, and in 410 his groups always got their assignments back promtly with real feedback. Someone must have complained to Kelly that they wanted their work back because she yelled at him a few times and took him into her office for meetings that I can only assume declared "you have to take longer to return work and not give feedback, because thats what im doing". So from there on out it was an uphill battle. Fortunately, Keith was my instructor and I was able to receive a good deal of feedback because he made sure he was always available. To sum it up, im sorry if you get stuck with kelly next year because keith is gone

Kelly has not yet understood the fact that we are college students and can grasp simple concepts without them having to be hammered into our memories. Much of her 2 hour lecture involves group work to fill voids of pointless time that could be spent doing something beneficial. There usually isn't much participation from the students when asked question because she attempts to create conversation from totally irrelevant topics. Im sorry she is a required class for CRP students because I have yet to gain any sort of knowledge from her teachings.
