This is the most interesting professor I have had at Cal Poly. His class is weird. He played the harp during the final to relax the class. He recites poetry and literature like crazy, and speaks a bunch of different languages. He is very soft spoken, and his class can be out there in terms of material, but he grades easy and his exams are open-book and open-note. Class attendance is not very important. Very good choice for English, but again he is probably the strangest teacher I have ever had at CP. D Shaul you crazy.

Professor Shaul is very passionate about literature and ancient cultures. It's best to keep up with the readings because you discuss and analyze them in class. When reading the Greek plays he will ask for volunteers to reenact the play. There were three short take home essays and the midterm and final were in class essays but we were given the prompts ahead of time. No surprises just interesting and intellectual lectures. He also played the harp for us in class which was fun - a nice guy.

Took this class when I was a freshman (3 yrs ago) - what an amazing experience. Shaul is a wonderfully absurd human being. We did puppet shows to act out very, very old plays. I turned in 3 papers two weeks after the quarter ended and he still gave me a B+. Shame hes not teaching anymore - if he gets rehired take him take him!

Shaul is amazing. He speaks parrot, wears kilts, brings food to class, sings in different languages while dancing, plays the harp and violin in class, obsesses about classes not having whiteboards, and makes everything open book and note. Take this guy because under everything hilarious he is really an intelligent, compassionate, and nice man.

You are in for a very special quarter :) Your grade consists of 3 exams, which are all open note/open book. Before the exams he gives an all encompassing study guide. There is little to no homework or outside reading/studying. He tends to repeat himself in lecture though. Dr. Shaul did so many endearing things--naps during tests, dances jigs, speaks a lot of languages, brings pizza to class, wore a kilt to class, tells jokes, he loves cola. He really is the best!

This class is kind of crazy. He obviously knows what he's talking about but tends to jump around and repeat himself in lecture. Luckily he gives you a great study guide before each test that has pretty much everything you need to know. I didn't need to do any of the reading either. The few assignments were basically credit/no credit. He's quirky and the class can be boring but he's nice and the class is easy and funny.
