Required reading is way out of line for a GE class. Don't take her unless you have too much time on your hands and like to write meaningless crap constantly. If you need this class to fulfill a GE, then look elsewhere, this one is not worth the effort.

ok this class was pretty easy. every week, on sunday night, we would have a discussion board writing on what we had learned the previous week. if you follow her directions, it is basically an automatic 100%. We also had 3 writing projects that were very easy as well. there were 2 tests, where the questions came pretty much from the readings. i personally NEVER read anything in that class, but we always went through the information in class, so that was good. she is very approachable, and don't listen to anybody who says this class is hard.

Passionate young professor who tries to make a class different. Yes, reading was a little long (about 75-100 pages a week) but it was all interesting material that I wouldn't read on my own. Come on, if you spend about 6 hours of your week on YouTube or getting 'crunk', you can spend half of that reading for this class. We touched some sensitive topics and it was handled great by her and by the class. Interesting class overall, you will realize some things (regarding racism) that you had never even heard of. Advise if you are planning on taking this class: do the readings (at least skim them if you really don't have time), speak out at least once in class, and do the online assignments, then you'll be set for a good grade. Advise if you aren't planning on taking it: think again.

This class is basically about examining society "with an Ethnic Studies perspective." If you go in with an open mind, the class really does have a lot to offer. The assigned reading load is heavy, but you honestly really can survive not thoroughly reading every single article. [[Just pay attention in class discussions and you'll get the main ideas.]] Some significant parts of the grade are four 500 word essays and two 800 word essays. And the midterm and final are super easy if you just pay attention in class. I RECOMMEND THIS CLASS, it's really good for opening your eyes to concepts of society.

This class isn't as hard as it seems. Just make sure to go to class and do the readings. I still passed without doing any readings in the first half of the quarter, but I had a hard time studying for the midterm. There will be readings that you need to have read before EVERY class period. The class was very interesting. Professor Lehr seemed very nervous at first and kind of maintained that nervous approach, but she is actually a great teacher with a lot of insight.

She is very passionate about what she is teaching, which makes the class quite interesting. She definitely tries to sway your opinion and get you to agree with her, but as long as you pretend to agree on paper and in discussions, you will get a good grade. One midterm, 2 papers, and one final. A very easy class as long as you do most of the readings, participate, and are open-minded.

Ethnic studies was so boring. It is pretty much all common sense. I hardly read any stories and got a 90% on the final. The projects and assignments are all pretty easy if you go to office hours she tells you what you need to do to make the paper/assignment better. The class was so boring though and seriously going to class isn\'t necessary. She just talks and then asks people for their opinion. She is very interested in \"discussion\" but sometimes they get carried away. She is a very nice lady and overall the class is pretty easy. I ended up with a B+ and didn\'t put much time into the class. It is straight forward just go in with an open mind and it won\'t be that bad. She is willing to help you out if you are willing to put in the effort.

This was one of my first classes that I took at cal poly and I actually didn\'t think it was too hard. The class could be boring at times, but sometimes it was pretty interesting. Once you get the basics of the topics it pretty much becomes common sense. She assigns a lot of reading, but we were never quized on it and you could probably do decently on the tests without reading as long as you pay attention in class. She is also a very nice lady and always smiles after everything she says.

GREAT teacher! She\'s really passionate and opinionated on the topics she teaches, but she doesn\'t let that get in the way of students\' perspectives. The class was composed of a group project, a few essays, a midterm, and a final. She assigns readings for every class period, but you don\'t necessarily have to read them to understand what\'s going on in the lecture. (Though you do need to have some idea of what they\'re about for the tests.) The tests aren\'t too bad, and she posts a study guide before-hand. Make sure you know all of the definitions for the terms that she puts on that study guide, and you\'ll be fine. Overall, my favorite class that I\'ve taken here at Cal Poly so far!

Assigns a lot of reading but the subject matter just repeats itself so all you have to do is learn the first couple of concepts and it works for the rest. She is very passionate about the subject and very energetic. Fun class and I would recommend her, she\'s not a very had grader either.

Dr. Lehr is a great professor. I took her class over the summer and it was okay, but we did have a lot of readings. She was a fair grader. If you want to do good in her class I recommend you to do the readings, they can be long but they\'re really interesting. Best professor at Cal Poly!

Professor Lehr is truly amazing at what she does. It\'s kind of indescribeable how much this class helped broaden my perspective of race, gender, and class in our society and beyond. Our class had so much fun learning from her - she assigns some pretty fun projects, she give us activities during class lectures to help break up the 2 hour lecture, and the on-line writing assignments more or less gave us free-reign to explore our own topics... She really did a great job every day of class and I told myself I HAD to give her a Polyratings shoutout, because it was such a great quarter. If you have the opportunity to take ES 112 with Lehr, don\'t pass it up.

Professor Lehr was pretty chill I guess. The class is only as fun as you think it will be. Professor Lehr explains everything clearly, meaning that it will be easy to get a good grade on the tests. There is also a lot of other work you have to turn in, like dialog essay type things, comics, an analysis paper, etc etc etc. It\'s sortof a pain in the neck, but do the work. If you are in this class with Lehr, and attend every lecture, you are practically guaranteed a B or better.

Dr. Lehr was an amusing teacher but she gave WAY to much reading. Unless you have time to spend reading for this class everyday I wouldnt recommend taking the class. Also a lot of assignments and busy work. She likes the subject she is teaching but most of the time you will just fall asleep in her lectures which never seem to end.

This was a very dull class, complete with a fourteen-paged syllabus and an abundant amount of reading. I am generally fine with homework, but this class was ridiculous. Professor Lehr taught in a very high school-esque manner. She gave loads of homework, talked to us at times like we were young, and made the environment uncomfortable with certain lectures. We essentially paid to teach the class, for there were group projects that lasted for about 80-100 minutes a piece, which took up about three weeks of class total. The tests (two of them) were long and super opinionated. Even if you are conservative, write all of your answers very liberally -- you will do much better that way. Her opinion is the one that matters.

Class is a lot of work, but if you do the work you should be able to get an A. Midterm, final, a couple of papers, a comic strip, daily readings that you dont really have to do, and a group presentation that takes some effort. Really detailed study guides for the midterm and final, both were easy. If you listen in class you are pretty much prepared for the midterm and final. Lehr is a really cool teacher, very lenient, very liberal (cmon, ethnic studies teacher). Good class if you are trying to get an A, but you really need to put in the work.

I graduated Poly last year, and took this class my second to last quarter. I just took this class because I heard it was easy, and had no intention to actually really care about the course. Jane is boss! She really opened up my eyes to all the crazy shit that happens. I read a previous post that said there's a lot of work for this class. Dude this is college bro! Every class has a lot of work. All in all, this class was dope, and Jane is very approachable. She's pretty cute too. Take this class you'll learn a lot.

This class was interesting and informative. Jane Lehr is the sweetest professor. She really wants her students to learn. The work isn't too hard and the class is pretty easy in terms of work. She gives you a study guide before the midterm and final with terms and it's EXACTLY what's on the test, in addition to an essay that usually about something she covers extensively in class. If you attend and take general notes you'll be fine!

So I took this class during the summer and I'm glad I did it. Dr. Lehr is awesome!! There's a shit ton of reading for this class and I hardly read the material haha therefore I got a B. With that said, if you do the reading you will get an A!! Only a couple times her lectures can get kind of boring but other than that its very interesting and informative. Class discussions were always my favorite because you get other people's input on race and class in our society. Other than that she's pretty cute in nerdy kind of way ;) Definitely recommend this professor for this class

Dr. Lehr is such a good teacher. She is just so jolly all the time. You know every assignment that you will have in this class on the first say of school so you can get a head start on anything. 1 midterm and 1 final. It is a fair amount of work but she is a easy grader. If you participate she will like you a lot. Ummmm what else..... the class itself is interesting. I always looked forward to going to class. She is so helpful if you go to office hours or need extra help. She genuinely cares about her students succeeding. I would absolutely recommend taking her.

In five years at poly, this is the only professor i've been inspired to rate on this site. She's a good person and she tries hard - but as a warning to students out there - she is the worst professor I ever had. Her reading load wasn't just unrealistic, it was disrespectful. That combined with her assignments (it seemed every few days a major assignment was due) made this class one of the most stressful classes (major or non-major) I've ever taken. I spent three or four as many hours on this (GE!) class as I did on my other upper division physics major classes. I know the rest of the students feel overwhelmingly the same as me. The one day everybody came to was the last day - so we could fill out the evaluations she never even passed out. Like I said, good person but an absolutely awful teacher.

I absolutely LOVED Dr. Lehr's WGS 301 course. Dr. Lehr is very good at encouraging class discussions and keeping things interesting. First of all, this class was terribly mistitled. It was called Race, Gender, Science, and Technology but we only talked about race MAYBE part of one day all quarter. The rest was all about feminism because apparently female is the only gender. The reading load was rediculous for a GE, even an upper division GE. The syllabus said that it was ok to disagree but it was very much not ok to disagree with the material or her. I wouldn't take this class if it were the only area F class available.

Jane is great and very passionate about woman's studies. I am a boy so this class was not exactly what I was looking forward to as there is some male bashing. She assigns an absurd amount of reading that almost no one in the class does all of because that would take way to much time. You have to put forth a lot of time for a GE but it is a 300 level course. Overall the class isn't too hard. Just go to class and understand the concepts in the reading (don't actually read them all) and you will be fine.

Dr. Lehr is a fabulous instructor who actually cares if you learn something. It is true that the reading load is heavy, but how else are you supposed to learn to various points of view within the field without reading the works of the major thinkers? In addition to the reading about one-third of the class discussions/lectures are student led (you only have to lead once) and in my class it was easy to just skim the material for those days because the presenters gave very thorough recap of the reading and their powerpoints were posted on blackboard. There is one paper to write, which she grades quite fairly, one midterm and one final. for the exams Dr. Lehr gives you options of which questions to answer, if you paid attentional at all and did some reading you should be able to answer enough to get a good grade.

Dr. Lehr puts an incredible amount of effort into her lectures. Students should feel privileged to have teachers like her who care about expanding not only the knowledge base of their students, but also their way of conceptualizing the world. This class was formative for me in learning how to question the world and more specifically the world of science. I took this course during a rigorous quarter and found myself staying up incredibly late studying, not because the course load was unbearable but because the material was interesting. This is a reading intensive course, and the course was front loaded with work and strikes a rhythm after the first few weeks. While you may show up to the first few weeks and feel overwhelmed by the reading (approximately 50pgs/class session), do yourself a favor and take on the challenge. You are in college to challenge your way of thinking and expand your understanding of the complexities of the world around you. Dr. Lehr has an knack for presenting material in a way that helps you do this. This class will not disappoint and neither will Dr. Lehr.

Dr. Lehr is a really great person. She really cares about her students succeeding, and not just in her class but overall. She is really sweet and energetic. You can sense her passion for teaching. When it came to the class itself I have a slightly different opinion. It was A LOT of reading. Some of it was interesting, but its a WGS/ES class, so it gets really repetitive. You have to get in a group and basically teach one class, one midterm, one final, and a few other small assignments. Not too difficult. The lectures can get boring. She was always very enthusiastic and talked a lot. Most times it was just information overload. Participation is key. Overall, great person, but just an OK class.

If you really enjoyed high school, take this class. Lehr is not a poor teacher, she is really knowledgeable and is interested in almost all of the subjects that are addressed in the class. However she fails to transfer that interest to the rest of the class. Most class periods half of the students sit at their computers and surf facebook, pinterest, tumbler, etc. She posts the power points online and when she does write notes on the board they are sporadic and unintelligible unless you are able to write exactly the context for which the notes are for. The problem is, when it comes to test time, a large portion of the questions are based on her scribblings on the board. And then there is the issue of homework. I personally think the class leads are interesting and they give a nice break from the dullness of her lectures and the papers that you have to write really aren't that bad. The issue is the readings assigned. She assigns somewhere between 40-80 pages of reading per class. They take from the books assigned, posted PDFs, and a few websites. The websites are usually pretty interesting, but other than that you have to read about 30-50 pages on the exact same thing over and over and over again. And if reading them wasn't enough, she spends an hour lecturing in class on the readings that by the second half of the quarter on a quarter of the students actually read. Don't be scared off from this class because it's WGS or ES and you are worried about he topics, she isn't very biased against students. But be very afraid of taking one of the most boring and labor intensive classes offered at poly. NOT WORTH IT

WGS 350 is a good class that covers a lot of topics...a lot...a lot a lot. Because there are lots of topics to cover, you'll have to read a lot, as others have mentioned. If you're o.k with reading a lot of pages before class, then go for it. Even if you're not, the lectures generally explain the main things you need to know for each test. This class, like many you will take at cal poly, will definitely "give" you more depending on how much you put into the class. For the first half of the quarter I read all the notes and readings and learned a great deal, but slacked during the second half (I took it pass/fail and passed). If you want to take this class just for the GE credit or ucsp requirement, perhaps its not the best. It's a pretty easy subject to zone out on, and like the previous student mentioned, many students will get bored or not come to class. If you are truly interested in the subject, you'll learn a lot from the class. I was very interested in all the topics, but got too busy to do all the work. If you want that "easy" GE class, i'd avoid this class. If you want to learn some cool stuff, definitely take the class: it's a good challenge if you want to meet it

Dr. Lehr gets points for being passionate and knowledgeable about the subject matter she teaches. That being said good god does that woman need to learn a thing or two about organization! The power points are dense and overwhelming, the reading each night unnecessarily heavy and repetitive. Even her syllabus was 17 pages long! There is so much information over load that eventually it all starts blending together and loses coherence. Some students are inspired by her passion but I find most are confused and repelled by the shoddy was she presents material to the class. I am studying to become a teacher and already have some years experience teaching and have taken several workshops on how to break down material for students in an effective manner. I can safely say I have learned a lot about what NOT to do in a classroom setting from Dr. Lehr.

If you want to challenge your own views and learn some of the most useful information you can, take Dr. Lehr's classes (any of them)! I have a technical background and ES 350 with Dr. Lehr was one of the most challenging classes I've ever taken. It is not because Dr. Lehr makes it difficult, it's because she presents a large spectrum of perspectives, backed studies, and in-depth information related to topics that we do not normally thoroughly discuss in our society. It's true, she assigns a lot of reading but they're worth your time and readings she put a great of time thoughtfully putting together. You don't have to read all of them, but the more you read the more you'll get out of it and also understand the complexity of gender, race, and technology. The readings I didn't have time for I've gone back and read because I realized how valuable it was. Beyond the class, Dr. Lehr is an incredible teacher that encourages discussion, respectful/thoughtful debate, and personal growth. She does a lot for Cal Poly and we're lucky to have her.

Dr. Lehr is fantastic. She is extremely knowledgeable, approachable, and flexible, and she empowers her students to direct their own learning, especially in Feminist Theory because most of the students are WGS minors or are taking the class out of interest rather than to fulfill a GE. That being said, DO NOT--I repeat, DO NOT--take this class if you have a heavy quarter. Just don't do it. As many other reviewers have pointed out, Dr. Lehr assigns an absolutely obscene amount of reading in ALL of her classes, but in this one it is actually necessary to do most of it. She will do everything she can to help you, but if you don't have the time and energy to put forth, you will be screwed.
