Dr. Stegner has a dry humor that will make you love him over the span of a quarter. He keeps his lectures engaging and is open minded to every students interpretation of the readings. He only assigned 4 papers and clearly states what he expects of you for those papers. He does assign pop reading quizzes that can bring down your grade if you aren't keeping up so beware of those. If you stay on top of the reading and get help from him on your papers, getting an A is definitely doable. I would love to take Professor Stegner again!

This class wasn't really hard. For the summer, we had four assignments. Three of them were individual assignments while one of them was a group assignment. Each was worth 30 points. There were no quizzes or exams. The "final exam" was the group assignment. We were required to read a few chapters a week, but it wasn't really bad. Some of the chapters were really short. During office hours, Dr. Stegner was nice to go over the assignments with you and check if the assignments looked ok.

I loooove him! super sweet, funny, cute, and just an all around interesting guy! he makes me giggle, especially when he says stupid things like "negative red-rider". and he likes star wars and dungeons and dragons. hes silly. Hes a good teacher, so just listen a lot and write stuff down and reeeead. the exams are a smidge difficult, but not really. I didn't study for the midterm and got a C and studied for the final and got an A. bottom line=study. but if u dont want to, im sure you would probably pass just by showing up. hes getting married in a week so congratulate him!

Wow, I almost feel silly adding to this love-fest, but it cannot be denied, Stegner is an amazing professor. I loved going to class. I'm just sad the class is over, devastated really. It's not just that Stegner is hilarious (I laughed til I cried) and easy to get along with, it's that he is a very good teacher, he engages you with the work, makes you want to come to class and do the reading not because you're going to be tested on the material or you want a good grade, but because you're actually excited about what you're learning and you're excited to participate in the class discussion. It just makes learning so much easier because its not a chore its a pleasure. If you want your mind to be blown, take a class with Stegner. I learned so much and I loved it. Partings are such sweet sorrows.

"Challenging, but fair." ;) Stegner has branded the phrase, "Negatory, Red Rider" in my head for all eternity, and I mean that in a very good way. Wonderful teacher--animated, witty, relaxed--and a great guy (evidenced by his model-hot wife). He taught us well without sacrificing the fun, and we went on a class date to see 'Othello.' In addition, he allowed my goofball engineering friend to attend class. I hope to have Stegner again some day..after taking his class last quarter, this quarter was a HUGE letdown.

He's Hilarious. Dr. Stegner is one of those teachers that actually engages students and manages to get the shy ones (like me) to actually speak up and contribute to class because he doesn't judge your comments and questions. Tests and grading are fair. If you have the option to take a class with him, do.

Stegner is funny, but I didn't really like his class because it seemed like he wanted to be freinds with us instead of teaching us. Half the time we didnt even talk about what we read, instead we talkd about bullshit. I didn't feel ready for the next core class.

Core 2 was a lot of fun. Stegner is funny and makes the class interesting. There are very few quizzes, though, and they are VERY hard. He does not offer very many points, so make sure to take each assignment seriously and get all the participation points you can. You will have fun in his class, though.

Prof. Stegner has a morbid sense of humor, and frequently gets off topic in his classes. He doesn't ever seem to have a lesson plan, just asks if anyone has any questions. Therefore, you are not sure what will be on the exams. He gives random quizzes, and there is so few points in the class you need to always be on top of the reading so you can do well on them. Also, 70% of the grade comes in the last 2 weeks, a research paper, early modern text project, and the final exam. When taking notes in class, write down EVERYTHING because he takes random little stuff and puts it on the tests. Overall, he is entertaining, but does not prepare you for the tests or the next CORE class.

I am a little torn on what to say here. I like Dr. Stegner a lot. He is witty and comical in class, yet portrays a somewhat dark sense of humor. In his office hours, he is upbeat, positive, and very helpful. Both personalities have their charm. However, I didn't like the organization (or lack thereof) of the class. We sat in a circle and discussed the reading, but he often flipped from one chapter to the next, then back again, then would get off topic for a while, then would flip back to one of the previous chapters - are you confused yet? I know I am. This made it really hard to take good notes, which then made it hard to study and know what would be on the test. He says it "builds character." He has very high expectations. The class consists of a lot of work - pop quizzes, extensive difficult reading, 2 short response papers, a 4-5 page research paper, a mid term, a project, and a cumulative final. He didn't tell us the final was cumulative until a couple weeks before which sucked. Then, about a week before the final he also handed out a list of 30-something literary terms to memorize and define before the final. Why he didn't hand these out and go over them throughout the quarter, I don't know. Then, the final only had a few of the terms and very few cumulative questions. So, I studied EVERYTHING (which was a TON of info) for almost no reason, rather than just focusing on the current material. I think he might have just been having an off quarter cause he seemed a little disorganized. It seemed like he forgot we have other classes and piled on a ton of work right at the end. I'd still take him again though. I just wasn't interested in this CORE class which made it a lot harder to get through.

Stegner knows his literature and his philosophy. He can take Milton and explain all the theological errors beautifully. He also has a great sense of humor, beginning most of his similes with "It's like when you're dating..." and proceeds to give a humorous anecdote that helps you remember the class material. He does have high expectations for his students, so pay attention and do not fall behind.

I almost got a C in the class, which was surprising, but I managed a B- where several of my friends got C's. But I don't even care. Stegner is so chill. The meh grade is worth having gotten to spend a quarter with a teacher I enjoyed; he was especially a breath of fresh air in Core II after the hell that was Core I with Schwartz. But beware, Stegner's grading sneaks up on ya. The little surprise quizzes definitely didn't help my grade (I failed most of them) and the tests were tougher than expected. I got a B on the midterm, but most of my friends (smart girls!) got C's or lower. I think I got a C on the final too; got a B on the final paper, which I was fine with. I would still take him again given the chance--he's a good teacher.

This class consisted of a midterm and final (non-cumulative), 6-7 quizzes, and one essay. The essay was due a couple weeks before the end of the quarter and he turned it back to us on dead week, which I really appreciated. He gave us a list of vocab that we barely discussed or didn't talk about at all but you still need to know it for the final and midterm so make flashcards. The discussion sucks in this class. Dr. Stegner just says what he thinks, doesn't propose critical arguments from both sides. He also explains the whole text and then expects people to participate when he doesn't invite discussion. He also makes random generalizations about groups of people (i.e.all people who play video games are lame and have no lives. He also made this comment about people who enjoy interior decorating). He's a pretty nice guy but the class didn't improve my critical thinking skills. We spent way too much time reading the Faerie Queene and the edition we read explained everything and then he explained it all over again in class. He grossly underestimates his students' comprehension levels and I felt like i was treated like a small child. He's not the worst professor but I didn't enjoy going to his class as I didn't feel that there was good discussion.

Haha, Dr. Stegner. What a beast. ENGL 252 with Stegner is a good class to take if you hate English and you know that you\'re going to put less than 3 hours of work per week into. No writing whatsoever, if you take the right section (look for the section with 100+ seats). 2 easy midterms that are all multiple choice (quote ID from the books and \"objective questions\"). No reading necessary for the midterms: all the quotes and objectives are gone over in class, so if you come to class and listen you don\'t have to read anything. Pop quizzes, also multiple choice, can screw you however since they are on readings assigned before the class period that goes over that reading. I seriously did not study a single minute for the 2nd midterm and I got a B. No, I\'m not smart at all. That\'s how easy it is. Final: more of the same. Stegner himself: at least 3 times a class he will go off on some hilarious tangent that will make you want to come to class just to hear what funny s@*t he will say. HIGHLY recommended.

I've been waiting all quarter to rate this professor. He is incredible! One of the best I've had a Poly. His midterms are straightforward and are all multiple choice. His lectures are fun and hilarious and interesting. I actually really ended up enjoying the subject matter, which I didn't think I would. Stegner is so funny and witty and really makes class fly by. Wish I could've recorded his lectures. He also takes tons of people from the waitlist so try and get in his class even if it is full. I was 25th on the waitlist and got in. The final was a little more difficult compared to the midterms so I wasn't prepared enough and a got a C. But it was my fault. Luckily, he drops the lowest quiz and gives you extra credit opportunities so I got an A-. This class is graded solely on quizzes and tests. The quizzes are easy 5 question quizzes over the reading. There is a lot of reading, but you don't necessarily have to do all of it if you come to lecture. GO TO LECTURE! First off, it is fun and hilarious, secondly, all of what he tests comes from lecture.

Stegner is awesome. Enough said. But if you need more details here it goes. This overall was a fairly simple GE class, although the material was not at all interesting, unless you are into old english that is hard to understand. It was an 8-10PM lecture with over 100 students, and the ONLY class i NEVER missed. Stegner is quite entertaining and funny. He presents the material very clearly, so even if you didn't read or didn't understand what you read, he goes over it well. He gives random reading quizzes that are 5 points each, most you can get by with sparknotes, but if you want to make sure you get the bonus ones correct, make sure to at least attempt the reading. Exams are all multiple choice, pretty self explanatory. If you attend class and pay attention, you should do just fine.

Paul was very enthusiastic about the subject, yet he did not attempt to meet the needs of students who found the material boring. He gave WAY to much reading and the exams were difficult. Stegner is a cool guy. I wasn't looking forward to an English class but this class wasn't bad. The material can be dry but there are worse books out there. Really easy class, your grade is two midterms, a final and some pop quizzes. I didn't read any of the books and was able to get a B+ in the class by going to lecture and reading sparknotes/cliffnotes for the quizzes and tests. If you want to get an A I recommend reading all of the books. The tests have plot questions about the readings (fairly easy) and a quote section where you have to match the character with the corresponding quotes. This part can be tough if you don't read the books. But I really recommend this class with Stegner if you want to get through this GE area easily, Stegner is a funny guy and made 8PM class somewhat bearable.

Fantastic professor and class. Easy A if you: a) take notes of everything that sounds important b) highlight all the passages he goes over c) do all the readings (or if you really can't, just go over sparknotes to prepare for quizzes). That's about it. Good luck, he's hilarious and the class is really fun. PS if you need the reading books I have all SIX of them for sale. Professor Stegner is the best teacher I have ever had and I would highly recommend you take any class he offers. He teaches to his test better than any teacher I have come across at Cal Poly. Moreover he is a super entertaining teacher and held the attention of most of the 100+ person lecture and kept them laughing throughout during an 8-10 pm class. He usually ends his lectures ~30 minutes early. Some of the reading is on the heavier side and difficult to read with the old english, but reading through it to recognize the quotes when they come up and supplementing it with a sparknotes summary make the class a breeze. To succeed in his class do the assigned reading (or even sparknotes is sufficient enough in a lot of the cases) and highlight the passages he reads to you in class in your books. He also tests on the medieval literary terms he goes over in class so make sure to take note of those as well. His Eng 252 class is structured out of 150 points total with 7 quizzes worth 5 points a piece (he drops the lowest), two midterms worth 30 points each, and a final that is worth 60 points. Each of his quizzes has a bonus question and each of his tests have 3 bonus questions. The material spans over six books. Awesome class with an even better professor, take it! take it! take it!

Stegner is the most adorable nerd of a professor! He definitely makes a 8-10 class bearable to go to. Quizzes are very easy. As long as you know basic stuff about the novel it is sure you will get a good grade. 2 Midterms are also very doable. Test questions are from lecture so it is really important to show up to class and take notes. Highlight quotes and study them! However, the final FUCKS YOU OVER. It is a cumulative exam. Some of the quotes were NEVER mentioned in the lecture and questions are extremely more difficult than the midterm. STUDY HARD FOR THE FINAL. I guess it might be because the class average is always so high he uses the final exam to fuck students over.

Pay attention in class, highlight every quote he reads, and take as many notes as you can in class. Go to every class! The literature vocabulary is very important. For the exams just re-read the story and be familiar with the quotes..the hardest part of the final was the fact that dr.faustus & goethe's faustus are such similar stories that it is hard to distinguish the quotes. Take the class, chill class, get out early very ofter, Stegner is hilarious, always making the entire lecture hall laugh, definitely a nerd at hear. Try to get 100% on everything you do up until the final. It is definitely doable and there is always extra credit available. Go to class, do the readings, ace the quizzes (super easy), do well on the midterms and you'll be "ok." The final is extremely difficult, most people I know walked into the final with an 95+/- 2. They ended up getting a B-, C+, C, in the class. No matter how hard you study for the final you won't do well unless you read ALL THE BOOKS AGAIN before the final. Reading over summaries about the books DOES NOT help at all in this class. Actually do the reading. Questions on tests are very specific but easy to remember if you read the books. Hands down, the best, most fair teacher at Cal Poly. Literally, all aspects of your grade are up to you. He is humorous, and makes even the dullest of books enjoyable to read in class. If you underline every line of text he goes over, take many notes in class, and keep up with the readings (there are 7 pop quizzes throughout the quarter), you will get an A. The midterms and quizzes are extremely fair; most questions don't require analysis. They are simply to determine whether you read the books and understand the plots and characters and backgrounds. The quizzes are worth 20% and they will sneak up on you, so don't forget about them. I got a B+ and would have easily gotten an A had I kept up with reading and taken the quizzes more seriously.

This was probably my favorite class at Poly so far. Stegner was very entertaining and knowledgeable. The books are okay, for our class we read Confessions of St. Augustine, Inferno, Beowulf, Titus Andronicus, Sorrows of Young Werther and The Great Tamburlaine part 1. Stegner's first lecture on Inferno was the first time I've been disappointed that a class ended because I was enjoying it so much. The tests and quizzes are easy if you read the books and go to class. There was no writing which is a definite plus. The final was a little more challenging than the midterms, but still pretty easy. There was a substantial amount of reading for this class sometimes as much as 60 pages, but I generally enjoy reading so that was not a problem for me. I was able to get a good grade in the class just by going to class, reading the books, and reviewing the books before tests. I highly recommend this class.

Stegner is such a nerd but he is extremely interesting in lectures. He makes really old literature become fascinating and even funny. My class was 8pm but being in class was so enjoyable that I always looked forward to it. The only bummer is that the tests and quizzes are very difficult (even for me who is an English major). You're grade relies entirely on reading comprehension and memorization. So if you hate writing it's awesome because there's no writing--only scantrons--but if you are like me and excel at writing and writing only than it is challenging.

Dr. Stegner is a funny guy and his class his pretty entertaining, but his class is a lot of work. You can get by with just reading spark notes for the books, but buy the books and highlight everything he reads in class, because his tests have quotation identification sections and the quotes he uses for the tests he reads in class. Know every little detail of the readings because he asks super specific questions, and take notes in class because his final is heavily based on random definitions that he half wrote out on the board. The midterms are pretty easy and the final is comprehensive and significantly harder! It's not hard to get an A in the class if you go to lecture and spend some time studying, but my biggest problem with Stegner is that he doesn't really understand that sometimes shit happens and you're late to class, I had a friend who had to drop because he showed up five minutes late to the midterm and Stegner said there was "nothing he could do about that". I had car trouble and missed a quiz and had no way of making that up either, which sucks in a class with such little points.

Top three favorite professors of all time. He is great with the material, is really witty and lectures are entertaining. I thought he was kind of a tough grader, but I think that can be good, especially for English majors/minors like myself who get treated like our writing is the greatest thing ever simply because it is grammatically correct. You have to go to class and if you zone out he will call on you...take it from me, so don't do it.

Awesome teacher!!! I only took this class because I had to, but he actually got me interested in the material. I admit that his class is probably not the easiest, but it's certainly the most interesting english class I've ever taken. He's really funny too-- I was cracking up half the class period! Take this teacher! He is absolutely wonderful to listen to!

Dustin/Paul "Dr.Master" Stegner is a great teacher and deserves A's on his evaluations. His icebreakers last for a good half of the class, and are awesome. He likes Duke's basketball team and long walks on the beach, and you may be tested on this information. He prefers Coke over Pepsi and the occasional guava juice. You might want to consider getting some anti-depressants because class discussions tend to revolve around death, revenge, and the general decay of mankind. He is a veritable encyclopedia of pop culture knowledge (from the 90's mostly) which he uses to try to connect with "kids these days". He really likes Anthony Hopkins, and not Julia Styles. Grading is "fair but challenging", and if you don't mind reading you won't have any problems with the homework load. In conclusions, goodnight sweet prince. (chili peppers)

Addendum. Prof. Stegner does not like Duke. I apologize for this miscommunication.

Stegner was amazing, easily one of the best teachers that I've had at Cal Poly. His class discussions with the "circle of love" were "awesome," where he was able to present otherwise dry material in an interesting and new way! If I ever need to take another english class, I will defitely try to get Stegner!

This guy is hilarious. I was bummed that I had to take an English class for my last G.E at Cal Poly, but Stegner made it worth while. He made early british literature interesting and our class discussions were always entertaining. If you're a fan of soda and ninja films, then this is the class for you. If you're not a fan, take the class anyway. As far as grades and assignments, I thought he was extremely fair and the 2 essays we had to write were not bad either.

Awesome teacher, really laid back. HILARIOUS. Kept class very lively and made everything understandable. Used the theme of Revenge in our studies which made some of the stories easier to understand. Overall, take this guy if you can get him.

Take this class if you want to fall in love; with the material and the teacher. Dr. Stegner makes William Shakespeare the author he's been hyped up to be. If you've ever read Shakespeare, only to be disappointed, let him be redeemed by taking this class!!!! Dr. Stegner is-by far-the sickest, wittiest, greatest teacher in the English Department...No...In all of Cal Poly!!!! P.s. and just for a little icing on the cake...Girls-he's TOO cute!!!!

I took this class last spring and this guy is incredible. Bible lit was one of my favorite classes due to Dustin always bringing a relaxed attitude. I went to his office for help for the papers and it really paid off. The 1st paper he made due the 3rd day of the quarter I didn't even get half done, but he gave me a D, which let me know he really cared. The final was fair especially with his helpful review the last day. Lots of reading in this class, beware for non-majors!

This was my second time to take Stegner, and that was definitely purposeful. He is by far one of the best teacher's I've had at Poly. He is SO funny and can make any topic interesting. His classes are generally late at night, but I never notice, and never want to skip class. This particular class was Literary Themes: Shakespearean Film Adaptations (or something like that). We would read through a play at home, then discuss it in class before watching a film clip. Then we would discuss the film clip as well. For "Homework" we had to do 2 response papers where we watched clips he emailed us from different directors, and compared them to each other. Those were super straightforward. I did them the night before or day they were due and got high 90s both times. There was only 1 quiz and it was because some people had been missing a lot of class, but it was only 5 points. I bombed it because I didn't do the reading that week, but it didn't hurt my grade at all. Otherwise, the class is based on a film project you do in a group and the final. The final was very easy, and not tricky at all. I was wary of the film project, but it turned out to be really fun and not too challenging. I highly recommend ANY class with Stegner. He is a hilarious teacher with very easy grading standards. But, at the same time you will still LEARN something!

Stegner is, without a doubt, the funniest teacher I've ever had. ENGL 381 is a graphic novel class that counts for C4, the GWR, and USCP. The class consists of reading a graphic novel or 2 per day of class (so 2 to 4 per week), which is completely manageable because most of them are easy to get through relatively quickly. There are 2 chances to pass the GWR, one on the second day (which doesn't affect your class grade) and one during the non-cumulative final (which is graded and you have to complete even if you passed the GWR on the first try). The midterm and final both consist of short answer (not even complete sentences) and 2 short essays (500 words each). The final also includes a 500 word GWR essay. As long as you read the material, the tests are pretty easy, and confusion or questions you may have about the material is addressed in class (all of which are seminar style discussion circles). The only other thing required of the class is for you to make a mini-comic, which is graded more on effort and explanation than substance. As long as you read the material and show up, there is no reason you should get below a B in this class, and it is a fantastic alternative to taking a more traditional and much more boring literature class to fulfill your C4. And even if you don't like the material, Stegner's hilarious commentary makes it a class worth taking.
