Mr. Walters was very good at explaning what we needed to know in order to succeed in our writting ability. He really cares about his students and really listens to what we are saying. He makes time for anyone who needs it.. He is fair when it comes down to grading..and what I liked most is that he is down to earth, even funny at times..English 56 at north county cuesta was fun so if you want to learn and enjoy it at the same time take Mr. Walters..

Mr. Walters did a great job. I was a little nervous for my first quarter of college English, especially after reading the syllabus, and I didn't know what to expect. I lucked out by getting Mr. Walters as my teacher. He presented the information clearly and interestingly and was always open to the students input in class discussion. It was not difficult to get an A on the 3 essays, and if you took the initiative to go to his office hours he was very happy to help you out. What I admired most about this instructor, however, was how fair he was. Many teachers are biased and treat students unfairly but Mr. Walters definitely does not fit this stereotype. If you want be involved and stimulated in a class, and be treated fairly, you should take this class.

Walters is awesome! He is really layed back and was very cool even during the 7 o'clock class. we only did lectures on reading stuff cause we had to do something in class. We had three big essays, a few very easy online grammer quizes and a final group presentation based on the last essay. If you get a bad grade on an essay you get to redo one at the end. Read his comments on the essays, they help. Overall a great and funny teacher!

A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. T.E.A.C.H.E.R. this class was by far one of the best classes I have taken at Cal Poly and most of that is due to Mr. Walters. I am a student that hates English and was absolutely dreading this class. Everyday you get assigned reading, normally around 10 pages, not bad at all! and then you come into class and talk about it. There are only 3 essays the entire year and the final is a group presentation with a small small small in class essay!, On Fridays you normally get to go outside and sit under a tree. BEST TEACHER don't take anyone else! Really actually cares about his students

Walters is a very laid back, warm, and heart-felt professor. He's there because he actually likes what he does and it really shows. The reading was short and sweet--completely manageable and discussions were somewhat enjoyable. If you hate english, the class doesn't overwork you. If you love it, he gives you plenty of room to think and express your ideas. Just stay on top of his schedule (really not that tough) and bring what he asks you to bring and you should do well.

Walters is probably the best prof that I've ever had at Poly so far. There are a lot of unorganized and unprofessional profs out there, but being in his class makes you feel like you want to participate in class discussions. He's a fair grader and really friendly. Its definitely not hard to get an A too. You have 3 argumentative papers and the last one is a research paper. As far as midterms, theres only one and don't even worry about that. The midterm is an in class time essay based on readings that you should have been keeping up with. Just pay attention in class and you'll do fine. The final is the same format as the midterm. Take this class and Walters if you aren't a strong writer because you'll not only learn a lot, but you'll be satisfied with your grade.

Walters. WOW. I NEVER bother to leave a rating for a professor, but I was extremely motivated to leave one for him. Walters is such a great professor. He's so helpful and dedicated to his students. He knows his stuff and is great at explaining things to everyone. To say he shows a passion for what he does would be an understatement, and he definitely does a great job at encouraging his students to do the same... trust me, it's contagious. =) I HONESTLY dreaded taking English. I made an attempt to take it Freshman year but the first twenty minutes in class (with another professor) opened my eyes to how English in college would be as close to cruel and unusual punishment as you could get. So I dropped it. I decided to take it with Walters and WOW. Completely changed my mind about English in general. The work in his class is DEFINITELY manageable. You take these online quizzes from the material you read. They're pretty easy. You read about 10 pages max everyday on simple grammar rules which you talk about in class. Sometimes there are class discussions and they are actually pretty fun to participate in, and this is coming from quite the introvert. You will get to read some selections and discuss them in groups and answer questions. You will write about three papers. Your "final" is a research paper and you will have to do a group project with that as well. He is absolutely great with grading. His class was a pleasure to be in. I would definitely look forward to having another English class with him. Definitely take this, you won't be disappointed.

Mr. Walters is one of the, if not the, best 134 teachers at Cal Poly. Your grade is based pretty much solely off 3 essays because the rest of the stuff is just free points. Class can sometimes be boring and tedious but he does have a good handful of stories that are pretty entertaining. One complaint is the essay topics, but they are manageable. Also if you want A's on your essays GO TO OFFICE HOURS. You spend like 30-60 minutes there and he tells you exactly how to revise your rough draft and you will score very high on your final draft. Overall, he is a great teacher and a pretty easy class. Highly recommend.

Aside from the fact that Walters knows his stuff when it comes to english and literature, he also has plenty to offer on life in general. Mr. Walters is a fantastic teacher! His grading is fair and leaves room for improvement on papers to follow. He has a method of letting his students write on topics they feel suits them while still having some control. Also, he taught me much about the world. Tad is a great lecturer overall. Some of the assignments do not clearly correspond to what happens in class the next day but if you ask him he will explain what he wants you to understand about the assignment he just gave. Weekly homework is just assigned readings and blog posts which aren't hard but are time consuming so be prepared for those. Some of the readings are a bit of a bore but you'll get through it. The essays are not too challenging there are 3 total and a final presentation which you will ace if you do what he asks and show interest in your topic. He gives great feedback on essays and will work with you when you are having challenges. He is super understanding of personal life stuff and you can tell him anything if you need an extension or accommodations. If you forget to do something he generally allows you to do it and turn it in late with just a small grade penalty. Overall the class is somewhat uninteresting but Tad is a pretty interesting guy who will give good feedback and grades fairly. I would definitely recommend taking him, just be ready to do a lot of reading and make sure you stay on timing with the essays and show up to the workshop days.

I love Professor Walters! He is a very interesting guy, and his class was so easy. There were only 3 essays: 2 five pagers and a ten page research paper. He gives a lot of time for these, and he even pushed back the research paper due date by more than a week. If you go to his office hours and have him look over your paper before it's due, you're pretty much guaranteed an A on it. His lectures are mostly discussions about the reading, and can be kind of dull sometimes. Despite this, he is a knowledgeable guy and loves to hear student's opinions on the topics discussed. I would definitely recommend him.

I used Polyratings before I chose my English 145 teacher and I saw that Professor Walters had a straight 4.00 so I took his class. Probably the best English class I've ever taken in my life. Professor Walters is really in touch with student needs and their attitudes. The discussions we had in class were really lax and easy to get involved in. The two hour block seemed pretty hefty some days, but overall it was worth it. The class is easy enough for a GE and as long as you actually do the work and don't blow off any of the assignments, you have a really strong chance of getting an A. Walters is truly one of the better English teachers at Poly.

This teacher is so overrated! The class was basically him sitting in front of the students lecturing about his political and religious views on life. We never learned anything on how to write or analyze argumentative writing styles. I moved down 4% because of a group presentation which was totally unfairly graded. This teacher/class was such a pain in the ass and most people in the class thought he/it was so annoying. Williams does not help his students learn how to write argumentative papers, he just likes to talk about politics. So annoying and very unfair grader as he is totally biased, seriously take a different teacher!

Walters is a really nice guy, very helpful if you have any questions. That being said, the majority of this class consisted of him preaching his liberal political views in such a way that many of the students felt alienated from voicing their own opinion. He would stifle any opposing viewpoint with incessant talking until the opponent just gave up from frustration. It was essentially a political discussion amongst him and a few students every day. Easy grade, lotta bullshit.

Overrated! Almost everyone in the summer class did not like this class at all. Most could not wait to get this class done with because it's not what people signed up for. The class is about him telling us what politics we should believe is correct and our views aren't correct. Honestly you cannot argue with him because he will win and shut your ideas down. The class project at the end of the course is so stupid and such a waste of time. We don't even see why we got the grade we received. Did not like this class at all, not what i signed up for! Pretty smart guy, but doesn't even teach a THING about writing.

Walter\'s is in deep denial. On the first day of class he explained that this would be a very political class, but no matter what our political views were, he would always approach the discussions free of bias. However, this is the most biased, self-righteous person I have ever met. He sits on his soap box and just lectures about how his way is the way it should be and does not hesitate to tell students (the more conservative ones especially) that their thoughts are wrong and his were right. I don\'t feel like I became any better of a writer after having had him. In fact, all you do is discuss political essays. There is no actual writing instruction. It was a struggle to make it through every lecture. I would not recommend this teacher to anyone.

Walters was a tough grader, but he really tried to impress the importance of skepticism, critical thinking, and evidence. Overall nice guy and tries to make things not so boring. My advice is that his office hours are POINTLESS. He makes you think like everything is fine. He only looks at the general format and doesn\'t actually read the content (which is what the hell you go to for help). Had to learn that the hard way. Also, the final projects are a major part of your grade, so don\'t let him fuck you over by switching you out of a good group and into a horrible group because they needed at least one female. He has a thing that groups should have balance between males and females. It\'s BS and say no when he wants to switch you, because in the end it\'s YOUR grade that\'s on the line. Again, learned that the hard way. Easy A or high B if you put in some work. You also learn practical stuff that\'ll help you in your professional career.

WORST teacher EVER! You will not learn anything! You submit your essays online and no matter how many times you read over it every single line will be torn apart. Do not bother going into office hours he does not help you. I wanted to know why I got a D on a paper so he read through it with me and at the very end looked at me and said "I hope you know I'm not changing your grade"... That's about all the help I got. SO unless you want to spend hours and hours reading the same paper and in turn get a shitty grade DONT take the class.

He's a nice guy but does not give enough information on serious assignments and then once turned in will mark you down for every single comma splice and then uses rules from an internet site that basically turns your entire paper into bad grammar. Professor Walters is an average professor. Actual class is easy, all you have to do is show up. There's weekly discussion boards (responding to essays) and a few partnered activities, and then three main assignments (1 page visual argument, 4 paged satirical argument, 8 paged research paper) and a group presentation final. He's not an easy grader mainly because he's really concerned with punctuation and grammar. Overall, was just an average GE class, nothing special.

This class was interesting to say the least... you have to show up everyday or you get 1/3 reduction of your grade. However the actual class time is extremely pointless. There is no reason to go to class or ever take notes in class. There are three main papers however his grading is ridiculous. It is almost impossible to get a good grade on anything he grades. Professor Walters is the most nick-picky professor I have EVER had. I went to his office hours regarding one of the three major assignments. He told me what to revise, I did it, then I got a C- on the paper. All your graded assignments will "proofread," no matter how many times you proofread it line by line. Even if you have three other people to read it, he would find something wrong with your paper. Those small things wrong would lead to AT LEAST 15% reduction of your grade on that paper. Attendance is mandatory, but not part of your grade. In other words, if you don't go to class, it is 1/3 off your grade at the end. (B+ turns into B. B turns into B-, etc.) But if you do go to class, attendance is no percentage of your grade. In short, hard to get an A in the class. B is very possible. If you want an easy A (like I did) don't take him.

Mr. Walters is a chill guy and pretty nice but his class is way too much work for a GE! Mr. Walters is horrible at explaining anything about anything and marks you down when you can't understand the instructions by reading his mind. He relies on owl.english.purdue.edu to teach his class and marks you down for stupid shit. His comments about your writing are rude and unhelpful because he expects that everyone in his class is the next shakespeare. This guy comes off as a really nice guy, but over the course of a quarter things really start to change. He acts like everything is not a big deal and he will grade easy on the papers, but dont be surprised when you get a C or lower on a paper. And it really sucks cause the essays are worth 10, 20, or 30 percent of your grade. The class was not that much work and we didnt have to take a test for a final, but honestly it probably would have been better if we did have those things. It probably would have helped my grade. Professor Walters is a nice guy and this course isn't too difficult, but I honestly don't feel like I learned much of anything from taking it. There are three essays (the first one is just a piece of visual media with a short response), group activities, discussion boards, and a final group project. The nightly readings he assigns are very political and sometimes pretty dry. During class, he encourages participation but then will cut you off and run with what he "thinks" you are saying. He seems to love to listen to himself talk. The final group project he assigns is pointless and you have very little time to complete it. I think I would have rather had a written final. He's pretty picky about grammar on essays but if you follow the guidelines and have good content you should get a decent grade. This class doesn't require all that much work but if you actually want to learn something from your professor, I would recommend taking someone else.

Honestly, Walters' class isn't the funnest one out there. The weekly reading assignments aren't super riveting, the attendance policy sucks, and his attempt to try to connect with his students is a bit reminiscent of an embarrassing parent trying too hard to be cool. That being said, I think you'll find those policies or qualities, or a lot worse, in a lot of professors. Walters' class is challenging, but honestly it was one of the most rewarding classes I've been in. I feel that I truly learned a lot from him, and because I took his class, I'm a more informed person and critical thinker in general. Additionally, he's probably the fairest and most unbiased instructor I've ever had. He understands and respects your viewpoint no matter how opposite it is to his own, and he gives credit where credit is due. Very mixed feelings about this class. There is at least 3 assignments due a week. The daily convos consist almost exclusively of somewhat religious topics. Pretty much if you aren't religious or know a hell of a lot about it you're screwed. Not being someone who attends church regularly, this class made me very uncomfortable with how much religion was tied in. It was not as though he was trying to teach religion but attempting to "debate" subjects like creationism EVERY DAY for 4 weeks. Really makes you feel judged by other class mates. If you want a lot of work then take Professor Walters. There are 4 large assignments in the class, and the last one is an 8-9 page research papers. The other 3 are manageable. There are 10 discussion forums which suck to do but most of the class bullshitted them anyways and they were pretty time consuming. There was also 5 credit no credit assignments which i felt were pretty straight forward. There are a few other assignments and there isn't a final in the class, instead a group project so thats a plus. He is an easy going guy and doesn't grade super viscously however the work load was pretty intense. The readings were sometimes cool and sometimes super boring. Bottom Line, way too much time spent on a GE. No textbook in his class is needed which is cool. Lectures and reading material is interesting, although the reading material can sometimes be lengthy. OVERALL. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS unless you are SUPER interested in English. I spent more time in this class than both my major courses (an average of 2-3 hours every night reading the material and also writing) and I still only ended with an 89, which he refused to round. If you're not writing an actual essay you're responding to "forums" where you have assigned reading and you have to respond with his guiding questions, AND answer two of your own classmate's questions. TOOK FOREVER. I had an A all quarter long until that end of the quarter paper worth 30% of my grade. I went into his office hours, I ran things by him after class, and I was pretty vocal compared to the other students. I got a flat B on that paper. I showed up to every single class. Wasn't worth it. This guy is a tool. He loves the sound of his own voice. He literally does not freaking shut up! Everyday you will hear the same story about how he worked in a federal prison and every time, he'll act like its the first time he is telling you. He has a creepy drawing of his two kids as his desktop (that has nothing to do with school but I just had to include it because it was so fucking creepy!). Anyways, the class is fine. I thought it was pretty easy and didn't require that much time. There's a few group projects towards the end of the quarter but there's 4 people to a team so its do-able. The way he grades is messed up. He basically just gives out letter grades. So an A is 100/100, B is 85/100, C is 75/100 and so on. He also grades on attendance, so if you miss 2 class periods, he drops you down 1/3 of a letter grade at the end, 3 class periods 2/3 of a letter, etc. I learned some things, but for the most part, what we did in class wasn't relevant to the assignments at all.

Prof. Walters presents a variety of very interesting and thought-provoking material throughout the course. Unfortunately, the "group" half of the class was not nearly so interesting, but there was still valuable lessons being learned. I thought this course was very helpful for real life, and a nice option to take instead of the normal English A3 class. There wasn't too much work to do outside of class and the last few assignments are in groups so the end of the quarter feels like a breeze. Walters grades assignments very generally, and you might just get a B on everything with the same exact feedback as before. I have never posted anything about a professor before on polyratings, but I feel that students who want to take the professional writing course need to be aware of what they are getting themselves into. Some positive things about the class were that there is no required textbook, you get the opportunity to revise your resume and have other students give you feedback on it, and you have some pretty interesting class discussions. However, Walter's grading and comments on your papers often do not make sense or are the same exact comments he gave to everyone else in the class. This makes it extremely difficult to know what he is looking for in the assignments. I would often spend a solid 72 hours writing and revising a paper and would still receive no higher than a B on that assignment. I had around an 88% in the class until the final paper (which is a group project) brought me down to a 75%. His grading is very harsh and he often focuses on things like word choice and punctuation rather than the content of your writing. Most days he comes to class with a sad story about his personal life and focuses on this story for a good part of the class time. I would recommend NOT taking this class. This GE is not worth the excessively complex requirements for assignments, harsh grading, and large time commitment.

Mr. Walters was a nice guy but his class always left me leaving pessismistic about life. You have homework every night but it isn't that bad. No midterm or final except a group project/presentation. Make sure you start it early and get a good group or you're SCREWED. Other than that, Engl148 is a GE class and it definitely feels like one.

I love Tad, he knows you and his knowledge runs deep into the flow and soul of the world; taking his class will set you back on your right path.

No matter how hard you try, you will get an 85% or 88% on every major assignment. Pretty mediocre professor. Even if he likes you, you will not be pleased with your final grade. Look elsewhere.

Eh, the class just happens. I feel like I know the same about arguing going in as I did going out. If you want the easy B I would take this class.

You are guaranteed a B. He likes ranting about how fucked up the grading system is, yet he feels required to only give a certain number of A's. The whole class is structured on ethically behavior and you are required to show up. The funny thing is how he gives the same feedback (word for word) to all students on essays. I know this because I compared my feedback with others. So beware and choose wisely.

This class is a lot of work but you learn how to write useful real life stuff like memos, cover letters and project plans. He's a really tough grader and he doesn't really teach. He just tells you what to do, puts an example of the assignment (usually a previous student's submission) on polylearn and then you just figure out how to do it on your own. Honestly really tough to get an A but pretty easy to get a B if you just do the work.

I took Tad Walters to fulfill my A3. Anyways, this guy is a really hard grader. Almost impossible to get an A, but pretty simple to get a B if you do all your work and go to office hours when needed. You need to go to office hours because half the time he does an OK job of explaining assignments but you are lost for the most part. Also, he liked to include much of what went on in his life outside of class with what was going on in class. So it was kind of annoying because sometimes it interfered with his personality. When nothing was interfering with his personality, Tad is a great guy who is also very smart.

Walters discussions near the beginning of the quarter were interesting and his big assignments were spread apart. Near the end of the quarter however, you start to realize how unattainable his grading scale is. He does not give + or - grades and 93-100 is an A, 83-92.9 B, etc. He gives a lot of 82% and 92% which can be frustrating based on the grading scale. Beware of this class as it is an insane amount of work in the last few weeks before finals while you're trying to focus on other classes for your major. Overall, the class was a very frustrating and underwhelming english experience by the end of the quarter.

Don't take this class unless you want to ruin your GPA. His grading process is very unreasonable and when you get an 83 (what I got) it's considered a straight C in the course. He does not use pluses or minuses in his course and doesn't hand out too many A's. His teaching style is very poor and he does not give much feedback in order to be able to better your writing.

Tad was an excellent professor in my opinion. I loved the style of class he ran, and I loved everything we learned/talked about. I definitely feel like I’ll walk away from this course as a better person, with a broader understanding of the world. His class was very intellectually stimulating, and made me excited to come to class every day. I wish I had the opportunity to take more classes with him. The only thing I disliked about the class was the two group projects we did (I hate group projects). But Tad is definitely a fair grader if you actually put effort into your writing and write with the intellect of a college student. Also, office hours. He definitely notices those kinds of things and you’ll definitely do better on the writing assignments if you get his input prior to turning them in.

Buddy gave everyone in my class the same grade and same comments on most if not all assignments I turned in. Walters did go through a lot this quarter with the death of his mother but all that aside his teaching was severely lacking. Tons of assignments, nothing taught in class, gave everyone the same grade on most assignments (as if he never read the assignments we turned in). Good guy with good intentions but not fit for a teacher, especially this last quarter with everything going on in his personal life. Hopefully he's better for students in the future.

Tad is the kindest, most empathetic teacher I've had at Poly. He is definitely overqualified for his job and he is extremely passionate about teaching. I always leave class feeling whole and satisfied, because the in-class discussions are captivating and mentally stimulating. Every assignment you complete in class is useful and every resource he provides is legitimate and constructive. You should definitely take this course. The grading is very fair and he is overall a very kind man that is very dedicated to his students' success.

Professor Walters is absolutely one of my favorite professors on campus. He is a no bullshit professor that will genuinely help if you reach out to him. This class is not an easy A, but an A is definitely attainable. If you go to his office hours, he's actually genuinely helpful and will go through your work part by part to help. Whenever you participate in his class, he give thoughtful responses to what you say and seems like he actually thought about what you said unlike a lot of professors. All in all, take this class!! I personally feel like I learned more valuable information than those in 145.

Tad is the best ever. He is really genuine and caring, and you can easily approach him if you need help with a paper or with literally anything in life. He likes discussions in class and there's no midterms or finals for this class, so it's not hard to do well. Take the class. Just do it.

I read his ratings before the class started and was terrified. DON'T BE! Walters is super understanding, really laid back, and a really cool guy. He likes to discuss things a lot in class, but he doesn't force you to participate. Nobody goes to his office hours, but he is really helpful if you do. He has high expectations but really wants to help you succeed in class and in life in general.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He does not teach, he just stands in front of class asking you to discuss the readings you do for homework, when he could be teaching you how to do the writing assignments he gives you a small amount of time to do. His grading standards are ridiculous, you have to get a 93% to receive an A-, anything lower is considered a B. Totally unreasonable that any teacher believes they can make their own grading standards, which will only bring down your GPA. He is not helpful during office hours and does not try to help you in your future assignments.

Okay so a B isn't all that bad. But I got a 91% in his class because of his ridiculous grading scale. A 93% and up is an A and it's so unfair when he is stingy with grades (but very generous towards the end?). Besides his grading scale, attending this class is TERRIBLE. This professor is going through some dark ass times and brings every ounce of sadness he feels into the classroom and saying really inappropriate and unprofessional remarks. One time a student got a call from her parent and he straight up said "you should be thankful you can still talk to your mother." like yikes. not okay. I stopped going just because class was too painful. Third, this class has nothing to do about the actual class. you literally talk about ethics alllllllll quarter. if thats your jam then sign up but if you don't like really repetitive lectures by depressed professors, signn upppp. oh also, there are two big group projects which he promises you class time to work on but never actually gives. the ONLY plus of this guy is that he's very nice in office hours and was very helpful when I was struggling with research of my project. sweet guy just needs to get mental help!

Dear, all the people considering taking this class next quarter and in the future. I would urge you all to take a different course to satisfy your A3. I have enjoyed this quarter with Tad, and there have really been some ups and down. I would just take ENGL 145 or something. This class is abnormally hard and takes up a decent amount of your time. I did not learn much about professional writing, but instead about business ethics! If you are in a major like physics, and really need to focus on your other classes, this is not the class for you. It is an incredible time commitment and I would really find a GE that is much less work. When I am in this class, I feel like I am in a major class. However, I don't want to discourage you completely. If you have the time to spend and want to make sure you do well in this class, it will be somewhat doable; however, the process will be an absolute bitch. I think it is impossible to get an A in this class, but, if you don't care about your GPA and want to learn something while being moderately entertained, take Tad and you will sort of have a fun time in the class. Many group projects and no real midterms, so can't complain on that end. Just a ton of busy work and class meeting on a Friday/4 days a week. Not fun but Tad is kinda funny and dry!! PS the grading is rough. but tad is cool :)

Guys, Tad is awesome. Tad is the only English teacher I have ever had like actually let me facilitate true thought. In ENGL 148 he gives you reading assignments each night and the next day you discuss them. No, there are no outside assignments involved with the reading but it is expected that you can discuss the reading in class. There are also occasional 1 question pop quizzes on the readings which are typically 3-6 pages. Then outside of that, there are two other "big assignments" each is creative and forward thinking. One is to create a fake website to illustrate the power of design and fake news(this was done in a group). The next is a technical report which he gives feedback on. Trust me it is not bad-- very doable. If you want to take a bullshit English class don't take this one. But I've learned more in this class than I learned all of high school. Tad is the best and I actually feel like I can talk to him on important matters and that he'll listen! and think about it! :))) tad IS cool

Professor Tad Walters is an absolute chiller! Such a nice guy and did a great job implementing projects that are super useful outside of class (resume, cover letter...) This class is not hard to succeed in and Tad makes it so enjoyable!

Pretty bad teacher. Doesn't give pluses or minuses on assignments which screws up the grading. You don't learn anything and he grades pretty harshly. I would avoid this teacher unless you want a easy lecture that gets out pretty early almost every other day.

He assigned quite a few projects, and he was pretty hard grading, but the class was interesting, the assignments/projects were straightforward/easy, and he was really genuine in his attempts to teach the class material. If you're fine with a bit more work, this class is interesting and not too hard.
