Marshall is a bad professor, but you've already learned that from her ratings. So here are some gory details: -Every class contains anywhere from 5-10 iClicker questions. These are not inherently hard, but she gives you only 30-45 seconds to answer them. If you haven't pre-read the information and done the online homework, you have little to no hope in getting these right, but Marshall's attitude throughout the whole thing is "come on guys, this is easy. We'll just breeze right through this and assume everyone is following me." Yeah right. Everyone just looks at what the smart kid is clicking. One day someone brought a laser and circled the right answer (seriously not a bad idea). -Don't expect to learn much from class. 90% of your learning comes from the online textbook (which is actually quite good) and the online homework. There's good info in there. -Unfortunately, this brings us to her tests. They're 100% of information you "learned" in class. Yup, this means that if you don't understand what's happening in class, you won't get the test. Reading and understanding the homework helps, but is not sufficient to earning an A. The difficult part about all of this is the fact that Marshall does a HORRIBLE job of explaining the tough material. She's very bad at teaching the hard stuff and she breezes right through it. Not much could be worse than that. All this being said, here's how you can earn your A (at least, how I earned mine). -Go to class, even if just for the sake of the iClicker points. -No matter how smart you think you are, talk with your classmates about the iClicker questions, you'll get way more correct. -Write down all the random facts she spews, there's always ~10 questions on the test that are simply facts she talked about in class (stuff about China, annual GDP growth, etc.) -Make sure you understand her examples of the hard stuff, the test is exactly the same. -Do the reading/homework before class (this is probably the best way to earn a good grade actually)

This class was terribly boring. Her power point slides don't really measure up to how difficult her tests are. She puts all her notes online and doesn't add too much to them in class. The homework online is a pain and costs a lot of money to subscribe to the website. Take another teacher if you can.

7 am class killed me, I never went and almost failed, but I think I would have gotten the same grade evern if I went to class. The first half I thought I was understanding everything but the midterm came and it was EXTREMELY HARD, I studied a lot and still failed it. The second half I gave up, only went to class for the final and miracluously passed. She must of curved it becuase I had no chance. Her lectures don't make sense. She is smart but doesn't know how to explain economics to normal people. Nothing makes sense. Your whole grade is based on 1 midterm, the final, and hw on the website. You pay 70$ for the website and the online book to do hw that is really hard and I failed the hw too. DONT TAKE HER, you will most likely fail.

You will have to wing the class. Also, the quizes online don't make any sence. I went to one of her office hours and she didn't explain anything. Take another teacher!!!

Professor Marshall is a very nice teacher but incredibly boring. Every class I tried my hardest to pay attention but would always end up dozing off. There is no homework but there are worksheets that she does with the class step by step. However the midterms are fairly difficult considering the pace of her teaching. Her lectures are confusing so be sure to read the book.

She has a very boring teaching style, I had to bring a book to class so I would have something to do, no homework, in class worksheets only worth 2 points, don’t really do anything for your grade, plus she goes over them so you really don’t have to do anything yourself, but then the midterms are extremely difficult in comparison. My classmates and I were happy with C- and D+ grades. No other points to help boost your grade, I was not expecting the grade I received, but I would still not take her again. Take someone else.

Marshall is a very dry lecturer and goes the full two hours. We had two midterms, one around week 5, one in week 9. During week 10 she realized that our last midterm came so late in the quarter that if we were happy with our grade, we wouldn't need to take the final. If you weren't happy you could take the final, and even if you completely bombed it, it wouldn't affect your grade. We had daily exercises/papers that we did together in class that helped out a bit. Her tests were generally kind of hard, but if you study and put the work into the class, you should get out with a good grade.

AVOID MARSHALL!! She expects every student to have taken Micro and Calculus before this class and she fails to recognize that this is a G.E. course too. The online homework is really helpful and easy, but unfortunately it has almost nothing to do with her lectures or her tests. The tests are exactly like the practice exams so they aren\'t too hard but her lectures are BORING and COMPLICATED. I had a difficult time getting used to the half lecture/half online format of this class, especially since there were many times where her lectures didn\'t match the explanations in the Aplia assignments. Also, her explanations are very confusing and ended up making the material even more difficult to grasp than when she began. She is pretty understanding when it comes to the IClcker attendance questions and Aplia assignments (she drops the two lowest scores for both) and is pretty good about meeting during office hours to discuss material. I took the course with no prior Economics experience so I struggled with the concepts but if you are familiar with Micro or any other econ classes beforehand, it\'ll definitely work to your benefit!

She is very smart and knowledgeable but she cant teach for shit. The HW is nothing like her lectures. The tests are hard as fuck. Professor Marshall is a very nice, smart lady, but her lectures hardly cover the massive amount of topics covered in the aplia assignments, which are actually pretty easy, but when it comes to the midterm and final, she will throw in that plus a bunch of algebraic equations and formulas that were (1)never on the aplia assignments (2)made more difficult to understand when she explained them.. Unfortunately the reviews don\'t really help on the final. The midterm and final require a lot of studying to get C >. Besides the crazy math she tries to explain, she does a fantastic job explaining keysenian theories and economic philosophies.. I enjoyed her lectures once in a while, but I dont think i would be compelled to take another class of hers based on the annoying aplia shit that all the ECON teachers are hyped on and the way she explains the math side of macro.

Most of the people I\'ve talked to hated this professor. But honestly, she\'s not THAT bad. She knows what she\'s talking about, and if you listen in class you should do fine. The homework is really easy, but it will not help you much on her exams. She tests you only on what she discusses in lecture so make sure you pay attention to the equations. The test have lots of mathematical questions and she doesn\'t give you an equation sheet so you must memorize them if you want a good grade. BEWARE! ALL THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS ABOUT MARSHALL ARE CORRECT! I\'m a 3rd year liberal studies major and took this class simply because I was at the bottom of the rotation schedule and this was the only open GE class I could find to get a full schedule. Prof. Marshall acted like all 200+ of her students were Business majors who have had lots of practice with Econ before. She is horrible at explaining the material in a clear and general manner for all of the non-economics nerds. The final grade consisted of in class iClicker questions, attendance, online hw, and the two midterms -or- optional final. I got A\'s on the in class questions, attendance, and online hw. I didn\'t do so hot on the midterms and final and thusly, almost got a D in the class. Luckily for me she decided to make the total class grade out of 91 instead of 100, so I passed with a C-. So, the GRADE WEIGHS HEAVILY ON THE MIDTERMS/FINAL, WHICH SHE DOESN\'T PREPARE YOU FOR AT ALL! BEWARE! If you aren\'t good with taking tests, DO NOT TAKE MARSHALL. Im going to be honest, I was scared for my life when I first saw her rating as a 1.1, but she's actually my best teacher this quarter. Her teaching is a little boring, but if you've read the chapter it reinforces the what the reading teaches and adds some extra information. Her midterms are relatively easy, you just have to understand the information and know how it applies to questions. She gives you a practice midterms that is really close to what the actual midterm is, but don't rely only on that. Put some work into the class and you will do fine!

Marshall is very dull during class and especially in the morning I struggled to stay asleep. We had to do in class question on the iclicker and she would never give enough time for answering and our grade is affected by wether you get it right or not. The actual material for this class is not hard, if you read the book. However, Marshall likes to use her own variations of formulas and her own variables and confuses a lot of students. Additionally, she fails to give you proper review sheets for the exams. She will give you a paper with 'all the equations you need to memorize', and guaranteed, most of them will not be on the exam, and most of the equations you need to know for the exam are not on her list. She also had the wrong answer for a question on the midterm, and several students pointed it out. She refused to admit it, post an explanation for how to get her answer, or give us points. Very disappointed that she is still here.

I know on these types of websites you typically only get the extremes: those that hate a course or those that were in love with their professor. I usually trust poly ratings, but basically had no choice but to take econ with this professor. I am not the type of person that typically writes a negative review, but this professor is absolutely terrible. Her system isn't the worst and it's possible to get A's and B's without even taking the final, but her lectures are like pulling teeth. After reading the other poly ratings I thought to myself, "these people are idiots, I just want an easy A or B and I'll fight through it..." but I was very wrong. Marshall is literally the frailest, oldest, and least technologically savvy teacher in the Orfalea School of Business. Take the class with someone else, and wait another quarter to get that professor if you have to.

I really did not like Prof. Marshall. Her class was very boring and when she attempted to explain something to the class she usually chose a very complex and confusing way, leaving the class much more perplexed than they were before. She posts a practice midterm and final (which is optional) before the tests and those are a pretty good representation of the actual test. However prepare to get bad grades on Aplia because she doesn't cover anything on there as well as the iClicker questions because she doesn't give you enough time or sometimes makes you just guess (usually to the detriment of your own grade).

Marshall is really boring. The way she explains stuff in class is completely irrelevant to the way the textbook explains it. You have clickers so you have to go to class everyday, if that wasn't the case I'd say just reading the textbook would be more beneficial. The only upside to this class was that if you did on the two midterms you didnt have to take the final (and if you failed them you could take the final to replace those two midterms) so I ended up not having a final for that class. But I would recommend trying to take a different professor for sure

Her way of explaining things was terrrible, at one point I asked her a question after class that should have been a ten word answer she spent ten minutes telling me things I already knew. She will never answer your e-mails and if she does she'll tell you that your questions are too difficult to answer over e-mail (I asked her what equations I was supposed to use). Her office hours are not long, can make appointments on maybe 2 days and while you're there she has to limit your number of questions because of students from her other classes coming in. A class size of more than 30 is way too much for her to handle.

I thought Marshall was a very good teacher. She knows what she is teaching and can explain if very succinctly. I think a lot of people have trouble with the Math in this class. Basically if you have had Algebra the Math is not beyond you and if you are in any Math, Science or Engineering discipline you will be shocked at how easy the Math is. Her tests are fairly easy she will either average your mid terms or replace them with your final to your benefit so if you fail a mid term or two you can still get an A. Some of the concepts are difficult to wrap your head around and can be confusing. I did notice that if someone didn't understand all she really did was repeat herself so you might have to go to office hours to get some more in depth help.

It is obvious that Marshall is very passionate about economics and she really tries to teach her students the material to the best of her abilities, but it just does not work that well. I worked my butt off, understand math concepts easily and took Micro before and ended up with a A-. She a terribly boring teacher, I felt like some of the questions on the midterms were unexpected (like she asks about random stats that she covered in her lectures), and she explains things terribly. If someone asks a simple question she will go into this in depth explanation of the subject in the most complicated way possible of explaining things. When I went into the class I knew she was a bad teacher but I was just like, fine I will just read the book and do fine, however the book just helps understand the material in class a little bit better because she branches off on her own type of concepts in class and tests on that so it was still a struggle because you had to try and understand what she was teaching. If you have to take her class like I did, just really put a lot of work into it and get help from people other then the teacher who understand the class.

I am assuming most of the people making reviews are not so strong in algebra, or have trouble with understanding the concepts, and somehow, that equates to Marshall being a bad teacher? From an objective standpoint, that really is not the case. Everything in her tests is explained during her lecture, and reposted on blackboard - the powerpoints themselves are organized and to the point. On top of that, she either takes the average of 2 midterms or final - which ever is better. The exams themselves are fair there aren't curve balls. She even gives out and goes over practice exams which are very similar to the actual thing. Marshall herself goes at a reasonable pace in her lectures, speaks well, answers questions, and does examples when she sees issues in the iclicker questions. THIS PROFESSOR DOES NOT DESERVE SUCH A POOR GRADE.

20% iclicker grade 20% online homework grade 60% combination of midterm/or optional final exam grade Marshall tries her best to teach, but fails miserably. It was commonplace for her to have 3-5 mistakes per class in her prepared lecture notes and powerpoint slides. In a class with around 15 informative slides max (and some videos) this makes for a very high error rate. It helps demonstrate how she does not fully comprehend what she is being paid to teach. Confusing in more ways than one. She often messes up what she's trying to say, which makes learning 10Xs more difficult. She stopped us FIVE times during the second midterm to make corrections on the test. It was like she made the test the night before we took it and corrected it during class. In her lectures she explains broad concepts-MACRO concepts- but doesn't apply the concepts to real-life situations so that a kid like myself grasp what she's talking about. Professor Marshall is a very nice lady and she does her best to be on top of everything. But she is not very good at presenting the materials. She often confuses students and never have time to clear up any confusion due to the class size as well as limited time. My suggestion is that read the chapters and do the online homework ahead of time, so that when you go to class you won't be confused. Online homework is very easy. Also easy iclicker questions every class as a way for her to take attendance. Take her practice exams seriously because at least 4-5 questions will end up on the real exams. Pay attention during class because she sometimes hints what will be on the exam. Although she is not the best instructor, you can't entirely blame a teacher for a poor grade, you just have to work a little harder.

Here's what I got out of reading the 50-something reviews below me: People who aren't so strong in math, or memorizing concepts may struggle in this class. Also, the people that give out bad reviews seem to be those who fit that bill. If you're one of those people, do the best you can to get a more highly rated teacher, and a smaller class size. Do yourself a favor. Personally, I've taken this class and she surely wasn't teaching at a "1.0/4.0" rating level. You people are overreacting!

Professor Marshall is a really nice woman but not the best teacher. With such a big class, it is difficult to get the attention one might need, especially since this course is challenging and you may need a little more help than expected. However, your grade is made up of 15 online homework assignments, 15 in class i-clicker quizzes (worth 15 points each), then either your entire final, or the sum of your two midterms. Plus she drops your two lowest iclicker and quiz scores, so you have a little leverage there. If you put in a lot of work on the side you will be fine in this class, go to the lectures, do well on the online homework assignments, and do the practice midterms she gives you like a million times because the midterm+final are very similar! :)

She's not the best professor but the class is really easy. Your grade is based on 20% iclicker questions in class, 20% online homework, and 60% for 2 midterm OR a final. If you're happy with you're grade after the 2nd midterm you don't have to take the final or go to class after that. She doesn't teach that well but the homework helps you. This is a class you need to take some iniative in. Marshall presents all the material more or less, you just have to be motivated enough to stay awake in class (she is a very dry lecturer), write it all down, and supplement it with the reading to fill in the gaps. Marshall knows what she's talking about, just isn't a very good teacher. Her final policy is great however, as it is an optional final, and you only need to take it if you want to improve your grade. She also uses aplia in case you need to know.

She is pretty much the most boring teacher in the entire world. I had at least sort of high hopes for this class- you know econ by itself is a terrible subject in my opinion, but at least I came in willing to learn and give it a try. However by the end of the quarter I wanted to throw myself down those stairs in the lecture hall...her voice drones on and she makes material a lot more confusing than it needs to be. Overall I'd say econ is not a difficult subject, but the way she teaches makes it confusing and extremely dreadful to go to class.. though I give her props because she is a really sweet lady.

The first thing I have to say is: DO NOT TAKE HER. Okay, now that that is clear, let me tell you why. She can take even the most simple concept and make it extremely hard to understand. She does not explain things well and she cannot explain them in a different way. Even if you try to ask a question for clarification, it will not help, because it is also too confusing to understand. Also, she blames every problem on the "new technology" that shes using. She fails to understand that the technology is not the problem, she is. That is her go to excuse. The upside is that the book is fairly helpful and she does put her lecture notes online (in power point) and you can play on you phone/computer all class, and she curves the final. Also, she offers bonus points to drop up to 3 of the quiz scores (believe me, you're going to need them). The downside is that you actually have to attend class because she gives you some equations that the book does not and she also takes participation points, her quizzes are nothing like the test, and she is, to put it simply, just not a good teacher.

Do not take ECON with this professor. As other people have mentioned, she does not seem to possess the ability to teach at all. She talks through the entire lecture, but very little of what she says is organized in a way that allows you to learn. Do not expect to learn difficult topics from her. This would be bearable if she actually quizzed and tested you on the stuff from the book (which is actually pretty good). Instead she hastily talks about a complex subject in class, doesn't ever talk about it again, and then puts it on the test. Lately she has been heavily pushing her political views on us which is annoying. She even put up an OPINION clicker question and then chose the one as right that matched her heavily conservative ideals. Unacceptable.

The other reviews cover her ability to teach. She does not seem able to effectively teach economics so I highly recommend you do not take her. Since all the reviews have given you a fair warning of her teaching, I will talk about the final. The final was easy. It was essentially just the two midterms combined. A lot of the questions were exactly the same or slightly switched up. That was cool as we knew what to expect. HOWEVER, her preparation for the final was terrible. It is a big lecture so there were 150+ people there to take the test yet she only brought around 100 tests and answer bubble sheets. Really? So she has her one assistant pass them out and only the front half of the hall gets a test and she allows them to start. The back half of us sit for 15 minutes while she goes to print off more. When she comes back she hands them to her assistant to pass out again. ONCE AGAIN, she did not print off enough so maybe 25 of us are still left without finals. So again, she goes back to wherever to print off more. So after 15 minutes of her printing and 5 minutes of passing out we are finally taking our tests. It took about 40 minutes overall. But wait, the absurdity is not over yet. About an hour later she gets bored and decides it's time to play musical chairs. Okay not literally, but close. Her justification wasn't clear (I guess she was worried about people talking, I really don't know) but she randomly started shuffling the entire class around. about 75% of the people in the hall had to get up and move to a different seat. It was chaotic and confusing. Anyways, this absurd debacle was pretty representative of her overall performance as a teacher. Do not take this class.

Kathryn G….ugh. This lady is cute, sweet, and is probably a genius. She is not, however, an effective teacher. She was impossible to follow. Seriously. I never had a clue what she was talking about because she would always do that thing when she explains something hard and then goes back and explains all the background information you need to know to understand. SO FRUSTRATING, The online quizzes are easy points, and she'll drop a test (2 midterms and a final), which is really nice. The final was exactly like the midterms; same questions with different numbers. Reading was not helpful, but the book was needed for the quizzes. Share it.

She is not that great. She doesn't know how to work any of her electronics which is weird. It doesn't make sense that you can teach a class without knowing how to work the projector... The cool thing about her is that there are 2 midterms and a final. The final is worth the 2 midterms combined and she takes the higher score as your test grade. Homework is online and you get 3 attempts to ace it. I aced the homework and got Ds on both midterms and then got a A- on the final to salvage my grade. I wouldn't go out looking to have her as my teacher but if shes the only teacher then don't sweat it.

The class is structured around lots of reading, 6 homeworks, and about 4-5 in class assignments. If you do the readings and go to class often, the class isn't that hard. However, Dr. Marshall really has a hard time keeping students' interest and attention span due to her dry teaching style. Most of my other classmates were falling asleep every class. There is only one midterm and one final and I thought they were going to be very hard, but they were only pretty hard. Marshall gives you a set of review practice problems and re-caps what is important to study for the test. She is a very nice lady and will help you if you ask for it and go to her for it, but overall the class wasn't too bad, just a lot of studying and work to do well on the tests and assignments.

8 homeworks and she only grades 6 of them, the midterm and final are exactly the homework problems so if you do those and understand them, you'll be fine. I think she was a pretty bad teacher overall, she calls on you randomly to answer questions and then laughs if you get it wrong. She doesn't communicate her ideas well, I had to figure most of it out on my own. Her only good quality is she's pretty helpful in office hours, and you'll probably need to go a few times to clarify on some of the ideas. If you can take someone else, do it, but if you can't she's not the worst thing there is.

Marshall is boring and somewhat out of touch with the students. The material is dry and she does not do a good job of explaining the different philosophies in macroeconomics, like Keynesian v Austrian economics. Compared with Zambrano's 311 micro class it is a breeze. If you thought you were interested in macroeconomic issues and this class left you feeling bored I recommend that you take one of Marlow's classes like Econ 424 (monetary economics). There is no need to avoid this professor just don't expect it to be an amazing class.

If the worksheets she handed out in class weren’t worth so many points and didn’t translate so directly to the tests, there is no possible way I would have ever gone to this class. Her teaching style was so dry and boring – I basically did the crossword and sudoku everyday just to waste an hour or so since she draws out simple points for way longer than needed to be understood. It’s not that I wouldn’t recommend her, since you will at the very least get a B, but if there is an equally easier teacher out there that is more engaging, go for them instead.

She acts like she is scared up there. Definitely cannot teach the material although you can tell she knows it very well. She does this akward laugh after some things she says, there not jokes just statements. I don\'t rcomend this teacher only if you need to have the material presented to you, if you can learn it yourself from the book I do, its not difficult. See ya later Marshall.

There are some upsides and downsides to taking professor marshall. Upsides: she cares about her students, is organized, and puts lecture notes up online that you can print out and bring to class. Downsides: class is just boring, that's really what it comes down to, and most of what is gone over in class does not make it on to the test.

I notice that most of these reviews are from students who took her for Econ 222. I took her for 313, and she honestly wasn't that bad. Sure, she can be kinda dry and boring, but it is ECON after all. Your grade consists of 8 In-Class Worksheets(pretty much easy A's as long as you come to class) worth 3% each, 2 Data-Analyses Assignments worth 8% each, and a Midterm and a Final worth 25% and 35% each, respectively. The exams were a bit challenging, but honestly not that bad. I ended up with a 89.8%, but she gave me an A- in the class. If you're gonna have to take ECON 313, you're most likely stuck with this professor, so if you feel REALLY bored during class, bring Sudoku or a cross-word puzzle to class.

Marshall is a sweet lady. It’s true her lecturing style, exams, and assignments need improvement. No contest there. However, it’s not apparent in class, but Dr. Marshall is actually a brilliant Economist and you can learn a lot one-on-one in office hours. There is a data analysis project in the course, take early initiative on it. Buy the book, read it and go to office hours prepared to ask good questions and talk Econ. If you can manage that you will find this course a lot more interesting.

This class isn't too bad. She has 10 in class worksheets that are worth 2 points each and can be a bit tricky but aren't super hard. She also has 4 extra credit quizzes which is nice! I destroyed the first midterm and did well on the data analysis which is a short paper with some graphs, all extremely doable. The final was annoying, two questions worth 50 points each and one question I'd never seen. Overall not a terrible class, if you work hard you can do well. Marshall is a good person too..

Oh my goodness this class was a joke. I've never seen a teacher get through so little material in two hours in my life. The class consists of 5 quizzes, a 5-7 page report, some reports on your particular country, and a final. Quizzes are easy since she gives you study guides identical except for numbers being changed, country reports are easy since you are just going onto online databases and retrieving numbers and doing some basic calculations with them afterward, final wasn't too hard, and the only real work you have to do is to crank out that paper (again, basic stuff). Easy, easy A.

To Whom it may concern, Doctor Marshall is a brilliant lady. She is a saint. Growth and Development is a very interesting subject; this is what Marshall publishes in. This quarter, the class consisted of five country reports, a midterm, a final report on your country (everyone chooses a country to research and gets to apply the concepts and models learned in class to that country), and a cumulative final. This class was very useful in familiarizing some of the basic methods of research and economic models. If you are interested in the global economy and how and why countries are developing, I would recommend this course. If you are a snot nosed fuck freshman as I was one day, I don\'t know what to tell you, you probably don\'t know if you like your major yet, I didn\'t (now is your opportunity to change). Marshall is difficult when it comes to testing, she is not going to pussyfoot around with that, but stay on your shit (as with any class) and you should do well. She\'s helpful in her office. Be active in class and you will probably engage your brain to learn the material (again that probably goes for most any class).

I have now had two classes with prof marshall and have really grown to appreciate her and her style. She wasn't my favorite teacher at first but now I do like her alot. She is a good instructor for this course an I enjoyed her classes. For this class the first midterm was good but for the second i thought it was quite difficult and very hard compared to the first. The homeworks can be a little tricky and take time to complete. I would defiantly suggest this class for an upper division econ class.

I would avoid taking this class at all costs. Yes, all upper division ECON courses are pretty difficult, but this class, and this teacher, are insanely hard mainly because Marshall is a terrible teacher. The class is graded based on 2 midterms and a final, along with a bunch of additional hw assignments (the homeworks only account for about 15% of your total grade, the rest are tests). For the first midterm, she tells you to study your homeworks and how that is all you need to know for the test, and then the actual midterm was completely different than the homeworks. I am a pretty good student and I hired a tutor, study for several days, and still got a 52 on the midterm. The median score was like a 43. The next midterm is a bit easier, but once again she puts crap on the midterm that she has never talked about in class, which makes it way more difficult than it should be. Additionally, Marshall is extremely boring, and she does not teach the material very clearly. She is one of the worst ECON professors I have had.

Worst teacher in the entire department of Economics and worst teacher I've had at Cal Poly thus far. I also had her for ECON 313. She literally has no idea what she is talking about. Lecture consists of her blabbing on about her research and making no attempt to teach us the detailed mathematics required to know in the homework and on the exams. I have no idea why shes still teaching here and the entire school of Business will benefit when she leaves
