Bruce really knows his geology! If you want to learn a lot about an interesting subject, I would recommend this class. His test are hard, but if you work hard and study a lot, you will do well. All his tests are weighted depending on the overall grades of your class. So you might do better than you think, when you get your grade back. Although Bruce may not be the friendliest guy, he is really smart and you will learn a ton. Just don't arrive late!

This guy is rediculous. I think he hates life right now and is taking it out on his students. THIS IS NOT AN EASY GE. I WOULD WAIT UNTIL the solar systems class has availabilty. To give you an example, I went into office hours to ask him questions, the first thing he said after I asked the question was, If you don't understand the lecture then review the power point, if you don't understand the power point review the book, if ypu don't understand the book, then ask me. After he said that I walked out cursing his name. FUCK YOU BRUCE LOEFFLER, I HOPE YOU DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First and foremost, AVOID HIM IF POSSIBLE. If you can't, go to class EVERY day. He says he doesn't include attendance in the grade, but today he tells me he's lowering my grade because I missed a few classes. You won't know anything if you miss any class. His tests are goddamn impossible, and then he's astounded that everyone did so bad so he curves it a lot. This man does not understand that we don't want to be like him when we grow up, he says if you aren't going to make this class your top priority and spend all your time on it, then you shouldn't be there. FUCK 'IM. Love you Cal Poly, but this guy sucks. he does not understand his students in the least bit.

OK so, im starting off by saying that i have an A in the class so far, so i'm not just saying all this because i'm bitter or anything. THE MAN IS THE UNHAPPIEST MAN IN THE WORLD. sure, he's smart and teaches like EVERYTHING you could possibly know about geology, but he expects us to know about 8 chapters (which are 60 pages long EACH) for ONE test. its absolutely ridiculous. everyone did so bad on the first test that he had to curve it 25%. not to mention our last test was totally out of wack. we had to know small details of CHEMISTRY. now, i passed the AP chem test and i still had an incredibly difficult time with this. he is totally unaware of how students work and does not have any clue about how to connect to his class. one of my friends asked him a question and he came up to her and asked her if that was just a brain fart because it was a really stupid question, and he told her he was very concerned about her. i would seriously recommend not taking this class. avoid it at all costs.

Bruce loeffler is the biggest ass hole at cal poly. He does not care about his students, he actually enjoys seeing students fail. His test are by far the hardest tests i have ever taken and he does not grade easily either. If you want to get rid of a GE do not take this class!! it is not an intro class or a GE level class, it is basically impossible. If you are dumb enough to take this class be prepared to read every page of the text book and study for 15-20 hours before all three tests. If you take this class it will be a huge mistake. Overall, he blows and i hope he gets fired

Douche Bag or Turd Sandwich? Ok, so most of these reviews are correct. The tests are hard, but most tests at cal poly are not going to be multiple choice. With the curve, I managed to pull over 100% on the tests, but they are EXTREMELY difficult. No way to know everything on them. He does put effort into the power point and outlines, give him credit where it's due, but this man is the RUDEST most UNprofessional teacher I have ever had - college, high school, middle school.. If you take him, you will learn a lot, but you will have to study too. Try to ignore him before class and after class and when he talks to students during lectures, and just follow the powerpoints and the main points he makes during lecture.. He grades attendance, but if you get over 100% on the exams, follow my lead and don't go. It's not worth having him bring you down for the rest of the day. Tips for if you take him: do not sit in very back row (he will almost ALWAYS make you move up) do not sit in front row if you have a cold - he is too afraid you will get him sick and ask you to move to back row do not show up late on first day - he will drop you from class. do not show up late, at all - he will ask you what your name is (have fake name ready)

so the person who said Bruce was actually a nice guy and that he really enjoyed his class...you must be obsessed, like live and breath, geology because that is the only way anyone could say that they enjoyed the class. I decided to take this class because I was interested in learning about Earthquakes but the Douche bag didnt talk about Earthquakes until the last week of the quarter. He expects you to drop everything else in your life for his class and is surprised when you tell him you dont understand the material. His test are ridiculous, all 3 of them, and are probably the hardest test i have taken at Cal Poly to date. there isnt any homework or quizes but there are field trips that if you cant make one of them you fail the course. My knee got busted by a line drive during a softball game and so i had to miss a field trip. when i asked him how i could make it up he said that i could possibly fail. basically, i hate him and pretty much you will too if you take him.

This guy is a Nazi! He thinks he is big time and wants every one of his students to know it. He will subtly brag about himself and his around the world adventures and fantasies. He never attempts to be friendly, and he just has a snobbish aura about him. I wouldn't be surprised if gets off on some of the stuff he teaches.

although loeffer is really passionate about what he teaches he made this the hardest class i have ever taken. i have never worked harder for a class in my life and got a C-. after every test he curved it alot because most of the class would fail it anyways. DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR A GE!!! its not worth the amount of time and work you have to put in it.

Do NOT take this class, whatever you do! This man is an awful human being who chews people out for absolutely no reason at all. He claims that attendance is not required but fucking rips your head off for not going. Not to mention he doesn't pass around the attendance sheet until an hour and 15 into the class, so even if you go and leave early you're fucked. He is a horrible person and I truly don't understand how anyone could like him.

By far the most valuable class I have taken in my 20 years of schooling. Yes the class is challenging, but the fact that the material is so interesting makes you compelled to pay attention. If you run into a problem, Professor Loeffler will have no problem clarifying the concept until you understand it. Sit up front, show up to every class, and study for the quizzes. This class teaches us something that everyone should know about, and this is the perfect teacher to learn it from.

Professor Loeffler go me extremely interested in geology and in the world around us. The class was challenging, but it was worth it. My recommendation is that if you are prepared to study and work hard, you should definitely take this class. The guy knows what he's talking about, and a lot of times, a scientist/physicist can know the material but have no way of conveying it to students. In Loeffler's case, he is able to clearly get the information through to his students. I'm an English major, and I loved this GE because it got me thinking about something other than books and writing. Everyone should take this class.

Bruce is a great guy. He tries really hard to relate to his students on a personal level and is passionate about what he does. He is also extremely intelligent, but doesn't take his students being the same way for granted. He explains all of the material as thoroughly as possible, and repeats more difficult concepts. Geology isn't really my thing but he definitely got me interested. You have to work hard for your grade and I was headed for a c+ but he gave a generous curve at the end of the course and boosted me to a b. He is a great teacher, and I would recommend the class.

A lot of students find Bruce Loeffler to teach a difficult, challenging class. Most of the criticism is rooted in the expectation that a GE course should be taught at an accessible level for students to coast through and get a passing mark so they can move on in their academic careers. However, Loeffler made a point on the first day and in the syllabus that he does not teach an easy course. And it's true. There is a huge amount of information covered in every lecture. Quizzes and exams are challenging and force you to coalesce all information rather than cherry picking the information that seems important. It can seem overwhelming at times, but I promise, it is worth it. Loeffler obviously dedicates a ton of time to knowing his lectures and material inside and out, which clearly shows in his powerpoint presentations. He tries to make every class interesting and provides extremely helpful lecture notes and powerpoints online. The material to succeed is there, and you can tell that he puts in so much effort to teaching his class. I would strongly recommend attending all of his lectures and using the materials he posts online. It's a difficult class, but you'll be amazed by how much you'll learn from a class that's "just a GE".

Brucey is a BADASS! 9 out 10 people will not like him but personally, I thought he was hilarious. Without a doubt, the most intense human being I have ever met but also a scary intelligent man. I learned way more about Geology than I ever cared to know but he has a passion for class like I've never seen before. If your looking for an easy GE, this is not it. If you have shitty registration and might enjoy observing the most highly strung professor on earth, I'd recommend the class. He usually gives 20 to 30 % but he can definately be an asshole too. He kicked a few people out of class on the first day because they were late. haha That's Brucey for you.

Loeffler is very knowledgable, but it is imminently clear that teaching is not his strong suit. He does not understand student difficulties at all, and is very critical of every little thing you do in his class. I don't hate him as a person, but I would not recommend him as a professor.

Wow. I've never been this close to honestly trying at a course and almost failing it. I would not reccomend him to anyone. He explains things in the most convoluted ways and it just outright rude. I have a theory he was tormented and teased when he was in school so now he's out with a vengance to get students back. Ugh. No Thank you... I really regret taking his class.

Bruce Loeffler is easily the smartest guy I have ever met. He knows his stuff, but because he knows his stuff he sometimes has difficulty teaching it to us mere mortals. He is very helpful in his office which i would greatly recommend and overall it was a very infomative class. I would recomend him if you want to learn and use your geology but if you want a easy A i wouldn\'t take him.

Mr. Loeffler is a very good teacher. He has pet peeves about cell phones going off and being late which makes him seem mean. If you get past that, he is an extremely knowledgeable person and is very enthusiastic about rocks. The class is hard if you don't do your readings every week. If you do your readings and study your lecture notes you'll probably get an A or B.

he cares a lot about geology and he works hard. he really does care about the subject, but he failed to present the materials throughly. powerpoint and guidelines didnt cut it. sometimes, the stuff he asked for would not matter. He makes the test so hard that the average is below 60%, but he puts up a nastty fattty curve that sets everyone back in the game. I failed all my mid terms, but i ended up with a B+. i have no idea how. there were no hw, no quiz. just 3 exams weighted equally and one optional final exam. i didnt take the finals because it wasnt worth that 40hr. i put in at least 20 hrs for each midterm, and i still failed them without the curve. good luck. just read the book, play the cd, and pay attention about infomation that are connected and comes in series.

You don't need to read the book, just go over the slide shows a million times. These are what his tests are based off of. You are probably going to fail the tests like I did, but he grades on a rediculous curve. On one test the curve was 50%. He is willing to help you in office hours and is a nice teacher if you respect his rules!

At first Bruce comes off as a get-down-to-business kind of guy. I'll admit, he scared me the first day. DO NOT BE LATE because he will chew you out. If you're able to take a liking to the subject though, you should be alright. If you go to his office hours and/or his field trip he will get to know you, and he likes to talk to his students. Believe it or not, he's actually a nice guy with a lot of knowledge to offer, it just takes a bit of looking-beyond how he is in class. Even though I didn't do well in the class, he was always willing to help and talk about things that don't necessarily have to do with geology. His tests are a bit difficult, but definitely fair. He will not test on anything he hasn't covered or forewarned his students about. There is no graded homework and your entire grade is based on the three tests, so STUDY HARD for them. He grades on a massive curve and I've known people to get over 100% in the class. This is definitely a doable class, but it is a bit of work. My advice, get to talking to him and it won't be a bad experience.

Brucie was a great teacher and bonified badass for the record...he took our class on a variety of interesting field trips and made his lecture material entertaining with his extreme enthusiasm and dedication to geology (that could have otherwise been easily made boring by anyone else). THough he does expect a lot out of his students, and you will have to work hard to do well in his course, he is a great teacher and really has a passion for the earth. Do not take brucie if your looking to skate by, but you really can take alot away from his class and have fun in the process if you work hard in his class like he does for his students....

In my opinion Bruce is a great teacher. Explains the material very well in class and has powerpoints that go along with them which are posted on the internet to study off of. The class consists of 3 midterms and a final that is optional. All are quite difficult, but he curves them to fit the class. No homework or quizzes, but studying for the tests is pretty much a necessity. I would recommend this class to anyone, I learned a lot and actually enjoyed doing so.

OK. So. Here is the deal about BIG BRUCE. He is so intense, it is a joke! His dog is named Bodie, thats extremely important. His exams are the most in depth and rediculous things I have ever seen. Although he tries SOOOOO hard and curves every exam about 30%, half of the class still fails the exams. He is inappropriate and loves screaming YOOOOO! Honestly, I am writing this review with 2 friends who had the class with me and all we can do is laugh! Take him if you would like an EPIC memory, but dont take it for a good grade or an easy GE. BY THE WAY, mandatory field trips that take so much time, but its all worth it when you see Bruce leave Bodie behind!
