Although this teacher seems to care about you, she will do very little to actually help you understand how to become a better wrtiter. She will stack a crap load of homework like if we are still in high school.....yes she will collect it. I honestly learned nothing on how to write more efficiently. She suck a big cock when it comes to teaching. Don't take her if you plan on learning to become a better writter.

Great english professor. Just grades a lil hard. But will re-grade papers after revision. REVISE you papers, she will give you at least a letter grade higher if you put a lil effort in to it. I would recommend her.

This should not be a difficult class. Every lecture we attended was busy work, discussed little readings or watched a movie. There was 3 essays, each one (except the last essay) could be turned back in to be regraded and get more points. You should be able to get an A no problem. Her grading on the essays is fair. The only negative I can think is, i really never learned anything new. I learned by doing it, actually writing my essays and seeing what sounded good and what didnt. She really never taught us anything new. I recommend this teacher if you are an ok writer and want an easy A or B.

I thought this was going to be a fairly easy class. I was wrong however and I had to work very hard to get my grade. Luckily I don\'t mind putting in an effort. If you are looking for an easy A then I would look elsewhere. There were 2 in class essays and 3 papers. You get to correct the first two papers and the third one is your \"final\". She was a nice teacher but just expected a lot from her students. I did feel that my writing improved though.

Erin was a great professor! Being an engineering student, I really dislike english but she made the class fun. She helps you to understand what the underlying message is, she doesnt just ask you for it and all the essays are straight forward. We did half the work as my roommates 134 class. She lets you revise essays as many times as youd like and shes super good at constructive criticism. She grades hard, but shes always willing to help you improve and she is super approachable in office hours. You can tell she really cares about her students and even though i hate english, i liked this class

This class was horrendous. She explains how English in college is so much different than in high school at the beginning of the quarter, but in actuality, I found this class to be identical to a high school English class. There are many busywork assignments and nightly reading (although usually pretty short) for the first 7 or so weeks of the quarter, and then most of the times is spent on the final essay. There are three essays throughout the quarter, with the last one functioning as the final. Her policy is that you can revise first two essays, after they are graded, and during her office hours and she will regrade it for you and have it replace the old grade. This rule makes it seem like anyone can get an \'A\', and that is true, except you would have to spend way too long revising in order to get the grade up enough. She grades HARD. The majority of most student\'s papers got a D on the first run through. From what I saw, revising the paper one time will usually result in a 10% grade increase on the paper. I\'ve heard other people getting lower amounts back though. Here is my advice to you. Don\'t work TOO HARD on the original paper you turn in, she will still give it a bad grade. Do make sure you proofread it though so there aren\'t any really dumb mistakes that cause you to receive an \'F\'.... although you can still revise an \'F\' paper. After you get the paper back, revise it IMMEDIATELY and get it revised at the soonest possible office hours. Repeat this process until you have a grade you are happy with. Keep in mind, it will probably take 3-6 revisions until you have a good grade and you can only get one essay revised per day. If you wait until the last week of classes, you will get screwed, she spends about 10 minutes revising each paper, and when the line to see her spans 20 people long down the hallway, it takes a VERY LONG TIME.

she expects SO much from you. there are like daily readings which are 30 pages. there was a paper to write every other week. and when it comes to grading... she is very unclear. she tells you what she wants, but when she grades you can tell she is looking for so much more. i tried really hard in this class and barely pulled a C-. i would reccommend not to take her if you don't have to. this class will take over your whole quarter.

This teacher was straight awful. I got a 5 on my AP test so clearly was a proficient enough writer. However, I didn't turn it in on time so i was stuck with her as my teacher. I dreaded that class. The time in class was absolutely pointless, and she graded insanely hard. Also the class itself felt like high school, except in high school I actually learned something.

Too much work for something that is just a rehash of highschool english. I worked my butt off for this class to only have it be all for nothing but a stain on my GPA. Harsh grader that will never give you an A on any paper. EVER. Do the rewrites that she offers and maybe you will get a B and if you are already talented, an A. But for the likes of me, who is neither lucky or talented at writing, well you can see what I got. Plus I hate her nasaly voice.

Most boring class I have taken in my life. Class time was pointless. You only needed to show up to take two in-class essays and to earn participation points worth 5% of your grade. The rest of the time you just sit there of facebook while she blabs on about random stuff that doesn't help you improve your writing at all. I tried listening, but I still did poorly on the papers. Had to re-do my essays just so I could get a B- on them. Don't take this class.

I could write an essay about why you shouldn't take her class. But to be brutally frank, NOBODY LIKES THIS WOMAN. You don't learn anything in class, she expects you to put in all this effort and then she just fails you anyways because she grades like a Nazi. There's a reason why her ratings suck.

Alright, let's lay out the facts, you only have to do 3 essays and you can revise and resubmit both the first and second essays twice. Yes she does grade hard but most of it (at least for me) was grammatical errors and since she marks most of them in your paper, just fix those and you should be pretty set to go. If not you have another revision to get it right. Granted unless you want to put a ton of effort into this class you will probably not get anything above a B. Now regarding the reading, yes there is reading. But I literally did 90% of my reading right before class and was fine. We even had a quiz on a reading I did not do and I still got a 70 on that. So really the readings don't matter. I'm sure there are easier professors for 134, but if you have to take Erin, it's not so bad.

Never in my life did I think that getting an A would be possible in her class. When you read her polyrating reviews and hear experiences from people you know, you can't help but develop unfriendly predispositions towards her. It turns out that, these allegations were false. You are given three out-of-class essays throughout the quarter which you are allowed to revise up to two times each. There are also two in-class essays which cannot be revised for a higher grade. After having her for both English 102 and English 134, I truly feel as if my writing skills have improved. Are they perfect? No. But they are significantly better than when I first started. It is my belief that Erin tries to help you become a better writer by providing you with a lot of strategies and helping you identify your weaknesses and how they can be improved without too much of her telling you exactly what you 'should' do. She wants you to take risks, try new approaches, and attack the prompts from different angles. I was fortunate enough to receive an A on the first and third essays so I only needed to revise the second one for a better grade. Erin is a generous woman but she will take away countless points on any given essay that does not have proper citations, sources, or a proper works cited page- I’ve seen this happen to many classmates. If I had the chance, I would take her again. Unfortunately, as an engineering major, I will be taking English 149 (not English 145). Her class isn't easy but this will be the second [solid] A I have ever received at Cal Poly during my freshman year- which only shows how much more difficult some of my classes have been for me. So no, you do not have to be a genius in order to ace her class. But you will, however, need patience, determination, and an open mind. I would personally recommend her for everyone.

This class was a very hard GE. I took her my first quarter at college so I thought all college english would be like her class but now I realized her class was not the norm. You can revise your essays multiple times, but she grades crazy hard! I spent so much time studying for her class, doing all the readings, and revising each essay twice and still barely passed. She killed everyones confidence with writing in our class and she doesn't understand this is a GE writing course. I later took a higher level writing course and got a B when there were no revisions allowed. So if you want to spend a huge amount of time with an A1 GE and get a low grade take her, if not avoid.

Mrs. Martin-Elston has a great way of grading. She realizes that writing is a process and allows revisions up until your final essay is due. There is no final, but you must finish 3 essays throughout the course. Take her offer and go to office hours. Revise and you will be fine. She tells you exactly what you need improvement on as long as you seek help.

If you show up to class and pick topics that interest you for your three papers, you will do well in this class. So this class is 3 processed essays and two in class essays with about 5 minutes of homework a night. On the processed ones, you can make it better and keep turning it in throughout the quarter to get a better grade on it.. DO THAT. going to class is semi-important because she keeps in mind who participates and that becomes around 10% of our grade. overall, she made me a lot better writer and her class wasn't all that bad. idk why I see such bad ratings on her. if you put a little bit of time into your essays, and go to her office hours to see what you can do better, you will safely be in the B+ category or higher

I had Martin-Elston first quarter freshman year at 8am four times a week. She was amazing! She assigned three papers throughout the quarter and wasn't an easy grader. However, she allows you to fix up the essays for a better grade. She is awesome in offie hours. I am not a strong writer and the revise policy helped me learn and kept my grade strong (the difference between and A and a B) She also assigns two in class essays. They are open book and she gives you a list of prompts ahead of time to prepare with. I did poorly on the first one, however, her notes were helpful and I did well on the second. Have an opinion in class about the material, she is willing to discuss it. Don't be afraid of office hours. Use your MLA handbook. Make the most of class time. Erin is a great instructor with high standards who values student learning and opinion. I highly recommend her class.

Overall this was a solid class. One of the reviews toward the bottom of this page says "She knows it's a GE and doesn't ask her students for anything impossible" and I think that's a really apt description of the class. You can tell she cares about the material and wants students to succeed (this is especially obvious in OH). About 70% of your grade is based off of 3 essays, with more weight on the later essays (the final paper, which functioned as our final, was worth about 30% of our grade). The first two essays can be revised, which I highly recommend. Just don't wait until the last two weeks b/c there'll be a long line. I went to OH about once per paper, either before turning it in to ask questions or afterwards to revise. She was definitely helpful in OH and I recommend attending. MLA formatting was big in our class, with a 10% automatic deduction for each citation error ("accidental plagiarism") that can be recouped via revision. Just read the handbook, don't use EasyBib or BibMe, and ask questions if you need to. Other than the essays we had little homework. Participation basically makes up the rest of your grade, so it's a good idea to pay attention in class at least sometimes. Overall, the class was solid and I appreciated Prof. M-E's teaching style.

Martin-Elston was one of the best teachers I had at Cal Poly. I had her for ENGL 134 that was four days a week. Minimal homework which consisted of reading a small number of pages in Fresh Voices or reading an article she posted on PolyLearn. Never had pop quizzes on the readings, just discussed them, and if there was a quiz she would let you know a day in advance. Your grade is mainly made of up 3 essays which the first 2 you can revise. GO TO OFFICE HOURS AND REVISE!! I can't stress this enough. I got a D on my paper and got it up to an A from going to office hours and revising. Revising your essays in office hours shows her that you care about your grade and yourself as a writer. As long as you go to class everyday, revise your essays, do the nightly reading, and turn in all your assignments on time no doubt you will get an A in this class.

Before the quarter began, Erin's poly ratings scared the s*** out of me as an incoming freshman. I considered myself a bad writer before taking the class so I was especially scared entering a WRITING and rhetoric class. However, Erin was straightforward with what she expected. There were three major essays throughout the quarter and a final project. There were also readings most nights and occasionally a quiz on them. Erin allows revisions on the first two papers, although, you should expect to come multiple times to get your paper revised before actually receiving the grade you like. I worked my ass off in this class and got a B+ in a writing class which is not my strong suit, so I really can't complain. Erin was a great teacher because of how streamlined she makes the class...Consisted of 3 essays with a final project that wasn't worth much of the grade but was super easy. You can revise all of your essays throughout the quarter, so if you're not happy with a grade you can change it later. Also her office hours are amazing she gives you so much insight into how to make your speech better. I went to office hours before ever turning in an essay and it helped a lot knowing her expectations before hand she'll help you in whatever stage you're at. I also had appendicitis during the quarter and she was extremely nice in extending due dates and making time out of class to catch me up to speed. Strongly recommend her!

If you take this class, be sure to be on top of things: read EVERY night and be prepared to discuss in class the next day because she often gives pop quizzes. Essays usually incorporate a lot of different materials and ALWAYS take longer than expected-go to office hours if you need help with organization (BEFORE you begin writing). Professor Martin is not the kind of professor who will baby you, but if you come prepared and ask intelligent questions, she is a huge help. Don't take if you're looking for an easy A. I found myself thinking, "How did I get the hardest Engl 145 class when all my friends are getting 100% on all their stuff?" Does not grade like it's a 100 level class. Thought about taking it CR/NC and I should have. There is a Midterm (Open note/books but still hard), final, a 100 pt paper, a 200 pt compare/contrast paper, and a 300 point research paper. Oh, and quizzes. This is my most stressful class this quarter... GE's at Poly are ridiculously hard already, take an easy prof that will help you get an A. But the icing on the cake is that she is unclear about her instructions. She mumbles stuff like "...it's due on the 25th" or "make sure you include..." and I wouldn't hear her and show up without my stuff! This is definitely not an easy class! Although the assignments are not hard, Erin will assign many of them at once and pretty much completely overwhelm you. At one point I remember having one big essay, two readings, a big group project, a mini essay, and chapter summaries all at once. There are three major essays, and she assigns them one after another without a break in between to recover. And not only does she pile on the work but she grades incredibly hard. I felt like I was doing "A" work but ended up getting a B on pretty much every assignment. It seemed that it was impossible to get an A in that class. Her midterm and final seem easy enough because they are open book and open note, but she definitely grades those hard too. Okay now on to the good news: Erin is a very good teacher. She is interesting to listen to during lecture and obviously loves what she does. She is more interested in teaching you something than giving you an easy A. Erin is very helpful in her office hours. However, I talked to her about my grade and did revisions. I honestly didn't change much of it and she moved it up to an A-. I think she's really about going back and revising your work. I liked the class, liked all the readings, did all the work, did rewrites, participated in discussion, did well on the final but the way she grades is ????????? so if you want a shot at an A, be diligent about presenting like nine drafts to her before the final draft is due.

Professor Martin-Elston was a great teacher. She was super nice, helpful, and supportive, and really takes the time to talk with you about your work. This year she was piloting a new assignment, where each student would pick a topic that had multiple perspectives on it, and then conduct research to write a series of papers about the different perspectives and your perspective. The workload wasn't bad at all, with minimal assignments throughout the quarter unless one of the 3 papers was due. There were no tests, but she did give us participation points for attending class, sharing ideas, and turning in some in-class assignments we did in groups. She does grade pretty critically, especially for MLA citation errors, but she does offer revisions so you can get those points back. She also allows each student to take a "mental health day" with no penalty, which is really great. Overall, I'd definitely recommend Prof Martin-Elston.

Martin-Elston was my favorite professor this quarter. HNRS 145 was super laid back, but with very cool and interactive class discussions. Both papers you have to write do take a lot of work and they are worth a very big chunk of your grade, so budget your time wisely and you will do just fine. The class required you to do several readings during the week, which were pretty straight forward and encouraged class discussion. Also, she lets you use notes on both your midterms and doesn't believe in A-'s, so a 89.5% will get you an A. Overall, I literally LOVED this class, coming from someone who passed AP Lit with a 5 and tested out of my A1 and hadn't taken an English class at Cal Poly yet. 10/10 would recommend!

Erin was approachable and seemed to really care about helping you become a better writer. However, she is a difficult grader and her reasoning for point deduction made no sense to me. She needs to be clearer on what she specifically wants. The papers and assignments require a lot of effort and time. But Lecture is laid back and enjoyable!

Professor Erin Martin-Elston is bad at Tech Writing. This is her first year teaching it. She is an extremely hard grader, dont expect to get an easy A. She said my resume was "solid" and gave me a low B. She gives you daily readings and you need the book. There are no tests in this class, only in class free responses to the reading which she pretty much announces. There is a memo assignment, resume/cover letter, How-to Video, and a Project Proposal that goes into your grade. Each assignment is worth a lot so make sure to stay on top of your work. Also don't skip class otherwise you will lose points because she takes attendance. Overall, the class is a hard one that I would not recommend taking if you are worried about your GPA. Fuck Elston

Honestly she's a really great person and I love the way she teaches the class! However, the way she grades can be very harsh and unfair sometimes. Before taking this class I've read other polyrating reviews and they all warned me about the way she grades and such. To bad I didn't take that advice seriously! She will literally tell you your paper is solid and give you a B... I've never seen someone get an A on a project or paper during my time taking this class....

Prof. Erin Martin-Elston is pretty much the epitome of average. She kinda has the grandma vibe going on except she's decently smart and sorta business professional. The most important thing to know about her is that she grades hella hard. I don't think I've seen anyone in her class get a score above 85% on anything. If you got an 85%, you pretty much got a perfect score (except ya know, that's still a B). It's not because the assignments are hard (they're not), it's because she grades unreasonably harsh. I've gotten papers and projects back with one or two minor comments and corrections on it, and I got a low B. She even gave us the opportunity to fix our errors, improve the paper, and resubmit it, yet we would get it back with our score only going up by a couple % even though we fixed every single little thing she commented on. If you can get a better professor, go for it. If you can't and this is like plan C, you'll survive.

Not bad workload, one big research paper but she gives you a lot of time for it and allows a rewrite. Grades tough and doesn't round up. Attendance is mandatory but lecture is a joke. Go to office hours to get on her good side. There are definitely worst professors out there, I would take her again. Easy B, tough A,

Missed the first day, went to the second day. Went to the midterm. Went to the Final. Three days of class total. I got a B, easy. This kind of shit gives our school a bad name.
