Moore is pretty chill guy and is indeed a professor you wish you had if you're in POLS 111 (online class). The class only meets physically, twice; usually on the first and last day of whatever day you have the class. There's a diagnostic exam that must be completed by Friday night of the first week you meet for the class worth 10% of your grade; score doesn't matter, you just have to complete it. I forgot about it so I lost my A in the first week so don't leave it to the last second! After that, you can choose however you want to complete the 10 quizzes (1 per chapter of the book). 45% of your grade is the average of your quiz scores so do try your best, study before. No midterms, the final is just a cumulative quiz basically, all the questions are from the quizzes. It really helps if you study with a friend so you're exposed to more questions. Last 45% of your grade is the final. Overall an easy course if you don't forget the diagnostic exam like I did. Just do it right after you meet the first day and stay on top of the succeeding quizzes. I suggest 1 quiz a week like Moore did and it worked out pretty well.

This is a really nice GE class. All the assignments are online. There are ten chapters total and average about 15 pages each. You get to choose when to read the chapters and when to take the quizzes. Typically, you should take a quiz per week. For us, each quiz had twenty five questions and you get ten minutes to answer them. If you read the chapters carefully, that is plenty of time. The questions aren't extremely specific although you may get a few questions about certain years and numbers here and there. There is no midterm. You only come to class twice (the beginning and at the end). The first time deals with what is on the syllabus. The second time is when you take the final exam. The final exam is mostly the questions from the quizzes. Make sure to take the diagnostic exam because that is due the first week of class. You get full points no matter what score you get and it is worth 10% of your grade.

The key to this class is really just to read the book. I know you don't want to because it's only a 1 unit class, but it really isn't that bad. The book is only 150 short pages. I finished the entire thing in about 8 hours spread out over 3 weeks. Moore seemed like a really cool professor. He also reset a quiz for me and let me retake it when my internet cut out, no questions asked. Just make sure you start taking quizzes about 3 weeks before the end of the quarter because it would suck to have to spend your entire weekend on this during week 9 when you have midterms and such.

Moore is the ideal teacher for a POLS class. I took the online class and I almost wish I could have had a normal class with him. He's super funny, really chill and he explains stuff well. He grades very fairly and outlines everything you need to know clearly. Don't let the online work catch up to you, space it out. Definitely study before the quizzes because that's where your grade comes from. His final is pretty much entirely from quiz questions so study those and you'll be golden. You only meet physically twice in the whole quarter, but the professor still matters. Take this class with Moore!

I could've studied more for this class final which is worth half of your grade, but the other half comes at pretty much no stress, as online questionnaire modules interspersed with what would be lecture material if this wasn't an online class (some of the online module questions are really overly tedious). Anyways this is a better use of your time than taking another D1 class if you only need POLS 111 to get that credit.

Your grade for the online class is 50% online homework, 50% final. The modules are easy bc all the answers are on Quizlet. However, it is a lot of busy work so don't leave it until the last minute. The final was way harder than I thought it would be and I got a 74% on it (B+ in the class). I suggest memorizing the modules before the final

This is a completely online class that has 10 online modules and a final. There is no book and you literally have to google all of the questions on the modules (that's how you learn the material). Some of the module questions are frustratingly hard to find online, but pretty straight forward for the most part. The final was pretty easy and an easy A overall if you don't wait until the last minute to do the modules.

As this is an online course, I only was in class with Moore for two hours, the first week and the final, so I can't speak to his actual lecturing ability. However he was incredibly helpful to me in office hours, even straight up answering questions, albeit a bit reluctantly, when I was really confused. The online modules are tedious, but I would assume that's how all online courses are and it's not really his fault seeing as the entire POLS department creates that. The one problem I had with the class was the final. It was so broad that I don't think there's any way somebody knew all the answers to all of it. It was supposed to come from the online modules, but because each question you get online comes from a pool of similar questions, my friends had information that I didn't and wouldn't have known unless I had talked to them that ended up on the final. I'd say that this class is relatively easy (I only studied for about an hour for the final and got an A), and Moore was a good teacher for it.

Dr Moore is a really fun teacher who makes his students involved in the class. He's constantly asking his students questions to keep the discussion moving. He teaches this class like government philosophy so you think about why you think what you think about government. This class is quite a bit of work, especially if you're a slow reader (like me). You have to be disciplined and make yourself read the textbook that he "compiled" himself because he doesn't really test you on it until the final. So basically, the class is a ton of work, but he's an awesome teacher.

Take Moore! He was amazing! Not only did he make a class that could be incredibly tedious very interesting and fun, he got everyone to participate (which always makes class better). Moore has great enthusiasm for the subjects that he teaches, which are usually in the fields of political theory and law. He is always willing to admit that he doesn't know something, but always emails the class back with the answer to the question that stumped him. There are at least 3 papers to expect in any of his classes, known as small, medium and then long (usually). However for me, the papers were the main reason why I actually absorbed any of the material. For someone who had no knowledge in political thought, everything he said and explained in lecture made sense to me. I've had him in other classes as well and I see the same demonstrated knowledge and willingness to explain. One warning to those who don't like participating: he will call on you. Moore calls students at random with flashcards to encourage involvement and uses somewhat of a Socratic method in discussion. But, his Monty Python-like humor makes every fear worth it. It's the only class I would never want to miss.

Moore was an OUTSTANDING Professor. Probably one of the best I have had. The man is a genius and will blow you away with how knowledgable he is. He is also very good natured and teaches his class with a great, upbeat attitude. Make no mistake though, he WILL keep you busy and, in my opinion, he grades tougher on essays then professors in the english department. If you come to class everyday, pay attention, and take good notes on top of keeping up on the reading, you will do just fine in his course. I look forward to taking this man again. Ohh, by the way, you WILL participate in this course so leave your shyness at the door.

Dr. Moore is a really enthusiastic professor. When I took this class it was offered at 8AM everyday--Most teachers would put you to sleep but Dr. Moore keeps it upbeat. I guarantee you will be called on regularly throughout the quarter so DO THE READING. There is a lot of reading for a 200 level class. When I took it we read Locke, Wolff, Burke, Al-Farabi, Beauvoir, Nietzsche, Freud, and Rousseau. You write two essays during the quarter: a short 2-3 page essay the first week and a longer 8-10 page paper. The long paper has varying due dates depending on your last name but you only get 1 week to write it, so if you see your due date coming up, do the reading in advance. The topic is always on the coming week's reading. The midterm and the final are both essay format where you are asked to compare various theorists on a given topic. Sounds simple but it's very time consuming. Almost everybody in class uses all the available time because he expects you to not only answer the question, but tell him everything you know about the theorist's argument. This is super easy if you go to class everyday (because he'll tell you EVERYTHING) and do the reading (because you won't get class if you don't do the reading. Overall: above average amount of work, kind of fun, great teacher

Moore is one of those professors who is always excited to be in class and teach. He knows all of the material backwards and forwards, not an easy feat when you are dealing with thousands of pages of political theory. He even changes the theorists in the course every time he teaches, showing that he has extensive knowledge of political theory. He is very helpful in office hours and encourages you to drop by. He is very smart but also humble about it and always welcomes new perspectives. People participate in class because they want to, not because they have to. He demands a lot from you, but in a good way; he wants to challenge you. I would recommend any non-POLS majors take this class if they are actually interested in learning about political thought. However, this is not a class you can skate through. It requires effort but you learn a lot.

Moore is such a cool dude. He presents the material really clearly, and does a really good job promoting engagement in class. He's a lot of help if you email him, and the essay assignments are cake if you do the readings and take good notes on discussions. Fair warning - grammar and style are weighted heavily in his essay grading scheme, so if that's a weak point, definitely make time to read his 9001 page paper-writing guide, or expect to see tons of 2.8.2's or whatever splashed across your paper. And you're thinking 'Who the hell creates a numeric system for common paper errors?' Dr. Moore does. What a cool dude.

I personally don't think Professor Moore is as great as everyone else thinks so. I mean he's definitely better than most professors. But this class was extremely difficult and required tons of work. Our major assignments for this class are papers and he is an EXTREMELY harsh grader. What really stinks is that we have to write the papers on books BEFORE we cover material in lecture essentially setting us up to fail. I ended up with a B in the class it required tons of time. My only advice is get your papers done ahead of time and have him look over them.

Moore is a wonderful professor, as well as a wonderful person. He knows the material for the course extremely well, and is just an overall intelligent guy who knows a lot about many different topics. The class is difficult and he is picky about grammar, but it is definitely not a hard class to get an A in. He requires 2 short essays (2-3 pages) and one 8-10 page paper. The week the 8-10 pager is due is assigned randomly by last name, and you get to pick the other 2 weeks to turn in the short essays. If you manage your time and space out the essays well enough, it is not a ton of work and very manageable. I definitely recommend this class, and taking any class with Moore that you can.

Honestly this class really kicks your butt. It is by far the most difficult classes I have ever taken at Cal Poly with extremely dense and difficult to understand material. However, Moore is great. But his lectures weren't very organized and I felt like he just came in front of the class and started talking about the material which was impossible to understand reading it so I think better power points would have been helpful. His classes are hard but when you get a B on an assignment you know in excruciating detail why and how you can improve your work. When you take one of his classes you should really make it the class you work the most on that quarter, getting an A is very hard but you learn more in just one of his classes than sometimes entire quarters. Professor Moore is without a doubt one of the best professors I've had at Cal Poly. He is ridiculously smart and is great at teaching, a rare combination. His lectures are both interesting and informative, and his assigned readings are of high quality. They can be boring - some of the classics, like The Social Contract and Leviathan - but others are more interesting, like Zoopolis and Not in God's Name. All of them are obviously important and of value to those studying political theory. Assignments were mostly fun, one presentation, one group project (annotating documents for accuracy/quality/tone etc.), and a few papers. The only real complaint I had was the final exam, which involves creating or appropriating a game to teach political theory. You can think about the game ahead of time, but he gives you the authors at the final, so you have to know about all of them. For some reason it's all handwritten which is a huge pain in the ass. I got an A- on my final, but it took over 2 hours of writing to sufficiently flesh out the essay. Overall Professor Moore is fantastic and if I were a POLS major I would take every class I possibly could with him. Seriously, this guy is an awesome teacher.

Dr. Moore is brilliant and he is beyond devoted to teaching. He has high standards and you better spend a lot of time proofreading your papers. But with that said, he is always there to help and clarify any questions you may have. In class, he is energetic and instigates a lot of discussion. I took Moore for Mock Trial. MT was one of the most intense things I have ever done. Moore is a really laid back teacher, but he expects a lot from his students. For Mock Trial, you have to be reading the case packet during the summer. Moore will answer any emails promptly. I was very new to Mock Trial, court room etiquette, and courtroom terminology. Moore explained it all. He is very organized and he has compiled a list of notes about MT that he uses for the class. Its great!and its all about his alpacas. This class has a lot of work at the beginning of the quarter. the first day of class--2essays are due on the case itself. the first week you should be ready to give your first class presentation. By the second week of class you have written a theory of the case essay that is 10 pages long. -that week of class you are going to do your next presentation in front of the class. put you best foot forward because a majority of the points for the class will be in the first weeks. also your performance will determine how you will fit into your team. after the first weeks, there are weekly online quizzes and meetings with attorney mentors. The final is part take home and part in class. Don't be fooled, both parts will take a lot of effort. In class, Moore will run through a trial with comments and suggestions. Before you know it, it will be time for competition and you will be glad you did so much prep work. Mock Trial is a lot of work, but is also a lot of fun. Its a commitment and a lot of work. You meet with your team A LOT! So, don't take mock trial if you don't have the time to devote.

I spent an extreme amount of time on his readings. The material is super dense and I couldn't understand it half of the time. I took it upon myself to actually read through the materials because he has 4 pop quizzes and his response paper topics are all from the readings assigned in the textbook. However, no matter how much I read, I always ended up failing his quizzes and scoring sub-par on his papers. I've had this professor every quarter this past year. Whether it was for a political theory class or basic political science class, every quarter was different in the sense that I was as equally engaged in the present quarter as in the previous quarter. With no political theory background or thought process in my mind, I still learned everything clearly and concisely as if I did have that background. Moore is very clear in what he is trying to say, and is always willing to clarify the ideas of the philosophers he teaches in class. This was one of the few political science classes that required me to read the textbooks thoroughly before coming to class because he utilizes a Socratic teaching method. I couldn't afford to not know the answer or not respond to his questions. The one thing I had trouble with were the essay assignments. Moore is brilliant to the point of finding many technical errors in papers, so watch out for that. Though, I did learn a lot about refining my own writing because of his classes. He pushes you to be very sure about what you're expressing in your essays as well as encourages an explanatory-like writing style when writing for political theory. All in all, definitely not a teacher you should pick if you want to cruise through a class for an A. But definitely a teacher to pick if you want to learn something and learn it well.

Moore is by far the best teacher I have had at Cal Poly. He is one of the few teachers who truely cares and loves what he does. Although he grades on a higher level than most, his willingness to take time to explain the material makes his class well worth the effort. Unlike most teachers, Moore makes his class very interactive and quite interesting. There is a lot of reading (about a book a week), but he goes over everything in class. I honestly did not finish a single book, but did pretty well overall. He does take attendance, so it is best to go almost every day. There are no tests, just a midterm paper (around 10 pages) a final paper (around 10 pages) and a term paper (around 15-20 pages). He is almost always in his office and will stop whatever he is doing to discuss practically anything, even if it doesnt have to do with his class. If you choose to learn something from your 4 or 5 years at Calpoly then Moore should be a teacher you have at least once in your school career. HOWEVER, Don't be FOOLED, MOORE WILL DRAIN YOUR BANK ACCOUNT WITH ALL THE BOOKS YOU NEED TO BUY and DON'T EXPECT TO HAVE ANY KIND OF SOCIAL LIFE because you will be too busy reading all of them. The first week of class hand in a 3pg paper on a book you haven't even bought yet. Didn't get the paper done in time...or had too much other stuff going on in other classes that's ok. Hand it in late. You won't get a good grade on it but YOU AUTOMATICALLY FAIL IF YOU DON'T HAND IN EVERY ASSIGNMENT, PERIOD. Really makes you think...I'm not getting a grade for this but I still have to hand it in. AWESOME! As previously mentioned by someone else Moore is EXTREMELY CRITICAL of your writing ability. If you have a fragile ego or don't take criticism well about your writing well that's too bad. Also one book you need to buy is his own publication which explains his own language which he has devised to explained where you messed up on your paper. I assure you, you will see what I'm talking about if you take a class with him. I digress however, Moore is a cornucopia of knowledge. And he does love what he's doing. Well at least while he is trying to achieve his tenure. That said if your biggest problem is motivating your self to go to another boring lecture rest assured that is of no consequence here. Overall I liked Moore even though I bombed his class but my demons and problems aren't the same as yours. The amount of reading required would be problematic for anyone taking another class along with this one. A 3 - 4 page essay due every monday; a 15 - 20 page paper due the week before dead week; the most difficult to prepare for final I have ever seen. When you\'re taking Dynamics, Thermo, and several major engineering classes find time to prepare for this final. I dare you. Prof Moore you should seriously consider changing the format of this class. Drop the ridiculous fifteen to twenty page paper and just have a midterm. Of all the professors of who suffer from the \"Oh I forgot that Students have other classes then mine\" Moore you take the cake. FINAL: three of these questions will appear on the exam, and you will choose one to answer. 1) As you have seen, one of the persistent questions in American political thought is the issue of the degree to which the government should intervene in the economy. Should the government support business? Should it regulate business? Should it redistribute wealth from rich to poor? (Does it already do so from poor to rich?) If government should do some of these things, how should it do them? What are the limits - what is too little government intervention and what is too much? Compare and contrast the views of two authors from group two, two authors from group four, and any two authors from groups one, three, or five. 2) A basic question of political philosophy, and of american political thought, is what justice is and how to achieve it. Compare John Rawls\' answer to this question with one other thinker from Group two, two thinkers from group four, and two thinkers from group one. 3)The thinkers in group five all seek to provide a broader, philosophical view of what they see happening in American politics. The thinkers in group three are radicals -they seek to either create or defend an American society that is very different from what the mainstream appears to want. Compare one thinker from group five with one thinker from group three, and then compare both to any two thinkers from groups one, two, or four. 4) As you know, a recent opinion poll found that 80% of americans think the country is going in the wrong direction. This question-whether the U.S. is basically doing the right thing or basically doing the wrong thing-has been a constant throughout American political thought. Compare the views of any one thinker from Group three with any one from group one or group five, along with any two from group two and any two from group four. Group 1: Du bois (x2), Chief Joseph, Plessy v. Ferguson, Addams, Washington, Garvey (x2), King, Malcolm X, Freidan, Freeman, Rubin Group 2: Croly, Debs, Beard, Rooseevelt (x3), Port Huron Statement, Rawls, Bryan Group 3: Bourne, Evans, Kaczynski Group 4: Carnegie, Hoover (x2), Lippman, Goldwater, Kristol, Beveridge, Kennan Group 5: Turner, James, Sumner, Niebuhr

Dr. Moore is truly one of my favorite professors at Cal Poly. Not only is he passionate about his classes, but he is also very knowledgeable. He is also a fair grader, and is very easy to talk to. Dr. Moore makes the classes interesting, and fun. Granted, the course did require A LOT of reading and a 15-20 page paper due at the end of the quarter. I worked my butt off to get a B+ in the class. My advice is to get started on that paper early. Also, see Dr. Moore for guidance on your paper. He is very resourceful and will help you find sources for your paper. Definitely take classes with Dr. Moore; he really adds value to the political science department.

Professor Moore is a really cool guy, super entertaining, and overall a great teacher. Class discussions are generally interesting. That being said, I would not at all recommend taking this class. He does not treat it at all like a GE. Its a lot of work and a ton of writing. The writing would not be so bad, but Moore take grammar extremely seriously. I've always been great at grammar, and yet Moore finds tiny grammatical mistakes, that do not in any way take away from the meaning of the paper or hinder the reader's experience, and essentially bones your paper. 25% of the grade of all of his papers are purely technical. He even gives grammar lessons in class. Don't pay college tuition for grammar lessons.

Ok, It's probably safe to say that I'm obsessed with Dr. Moore. He is a wealth of knowledge, humor, and will challenge the way you think. He holds his class to high standards and grades as such. To get a B in Moore's class is nothing shabby. Although he may be a hard grader, it is not only because of the standards to which he holds his classes but also because of the curriculum which he covers. It is intense material and there is a lot of it. You do have to do your readings, you do have to spend time on your papers, you should go into office hours and talk to him (not just about class, he's also just a really really cool dude), and you have to participate in class. You will get so much more out of this class if you put in the work to do well - not just a great grade, but you'll learn so much. This was my second time taking Moore (and getting a B), and I've still signed up to take another class with him and I think I'll take as many more as I can - he's that great. We are so lucky to have a professor like Dr. Moore at Cal Poly, he is of a high enough caliber to be teaching at a more prestigious institution. He graduated from Johns Hopkins, that speaks for itself: one of the most prestigious Political Science universities in America. For POLS 430, expect a significant amount of (really cool) readings. Expect a very casual class atmosphere where unlike POLS 230, you are not required (although you are encouraged) to talk. You will have to read one of the readings and prepare a class discussion on that reading. It's relatively easy and most people scored highly on it. Have fun with it, I learned so much doing mine! You will do 3 response papers, but more if you so choose, and the three highest grades you receive will be applied to your overall grade. You will also complete a 20-30 page research paper on a topic of your choice that relates to a class reading. HARD. But awesome. I got a B+ on mine and I was beyond stoked with that. A B+ from Dr. Moore is a pretty great compliment, in my opinion. I think 430 is totally do-able, I highly recommend it, but in general I just recommend taking Dr. Moore. He is by far my favorite professor at Cal Poly and has changed my college experience for the better! He has challenged my mind and given me a wealth of knowledge!
