He\'s very interesting, and loves to demonstrate historical aspects in class. It\'s a big lecture class, but it doesn\'t seem like it. One day he dressed up like a hoplite, one day he burned frankincense so we would know what it smelled like in the period we were studying. And one day he had a baby lamb wearing a diaper, although that wasn\'t history-related. Great guy, loves to see you in office hours. Tests are sort of hard, but that\'s because I didn\'t study. Reading quizzes are easy. Solid history class, above-average teacher.

Hopper was actually a really cool guy. He knows A LOT of information. I had the class everyday except friday for an hour and I'm pretty sure that's the only way to take it just becuase there is so much to cover. He goes through his lectures really fast. dont try to copy the power points becuase he'll post them later. Focus on the extra facts he throws in about the particular subject. Overall he was a great guy who really cared about the sucess of his students. He was actually pretty funny too.

he is a great professor, but if you dont enjoy reading your ass off about nonsense, memorizing WAY too much information and writing essays, i would not recommend this class. He presents the info very clearly and absolutely loves what he does, but it is a LOT of work if you hate history. tooo muchhhhh information to study!

Professor Hopper is extremely nice. He presents the material in an interesting way and it is an enjoyable class. There is A LOT of reading but for the most part it is fairly interesting. There is a map and reading quiz once a week. The map quizzes are really easy and the reading quizzes are not extremely difficult. He drops your lowest two reading quiz scores and lowest two map quiz scores. The midterm and final are basically the same, with a lot of memorization required. Despite all the reading and the memorization, I got a lot out of this class and I really enjoyed it. Hopper is also more than willing to help and even has extended office hours before the midterm and final.

This is an awesome prfessor!!!! If you get the chance to take him, do it! The class is not easy, but it is fun and Hopper really makes the material interesting. I have never liked history before, but now that has definitely changed and I enjoy it very much so! You have weekly quizzes, one map and one reading, also a midterm and a final. Great class!!!

Dr. Hopper was one of my favorite professors this quarter. I wasn't super stoked about two two-hour history lectures a week, but Hopper's enthusiasm and hilarious antics kept me looking forward to lecture each time. He is extremely helpful and really cares about his students. He won't hesitate to make extra office hours for struggling students and will go out of his way to make sure you understand the material. Be prepared though, this class takes a TON of work. There was usually 100 pages of reading a week along with a reading quiz and a map quiz. He drops the two lowest map quizzes and the lowest reading quiz though, so you do have a bit of a cushion. The Exams were probably the hardest part of this class. He tends to grade on the tougher side: only 12 people in a class of 120 got A's on the midterm. He does give you a study guide with everything that could be on the test before hand and if you go to his office hours you should at least pass the tests. Overall an awesome professor, definitely take him for HIST 210.

Hopper's class is A LOT of work, so be prepared for hours upon hours of reading. Personally I thought that the reading quizes and map quizes were a huge waste of time, but they will help your grade. His class is interesting to go to, and he's a dynamic speaker but I wouldn't recommend taking it unless you have to

Great professor, one of my favorites, I just wish I had his smaller section. His lectures are all very entertaining and interesting. The readings are a little dry, but the quizzes are easy. There is a map quiz and reading quiz every week, which does get a little old but it's a major grade booster. No term papers, just a midterm and final.

Dr. Hopper was by far one of the best history professors I have ever had. He always made class fun and interesting. He is very passionate about world history, and he is also very dedicated to making sure his students are well prepared for the exams. He even hold extra office hours at Backstage pizza for anyone who needs a little last minute tutoring. His exams were not easy, but he really does everything he can to prepare you for it. If you go to office hours and ask questions, you will do just fine on the exams. I would also highly recommend forming a study group with other people in the class, believe me, it helps a lot! All said, Dr. Hopper is a phenomenal teacher and Cal Poly's history department is very lucky to have him.

Dr. Hopper was an awesome History professor, I feel that I have been spoiled through the years with awesome professors of history, and he was no exception. I have actually walked away from this class with a pretty decent understanding of like 3000 years of history which just seems ridiculous. There is a lot of information to take up in this class! The lectures are dense with information and he knows this. Not once did I go to class to hear a lecture for 2 hours. There were frequent movie clips, demonstrations, or other forms of learning besides powerpoints. He made the history interesting, and though there was a lot of reading he let you know exactly what you needed to know for the tests. Take him for the experience of a great professer, but be prepared to learn and listen!

GREAT PROFESSOR. If you get the chance, take him!! The class was early but i always looked forward to it. he is a funny guy and really made the class interesting. The mid term and final are so straight forward, just prepare for them and you will do fine. It is a large amount of work with a map quiz and a reading quiz every week but they aren't hard at all. I never did the reading and just took the quiz online, its obviously open book, and the lowest score i got was a 70, which was thrown out anyway since he drops the lowest map and reading score you get. TAKE HIM!!! You won't regret it.

History 210 with Hopper is a must take class. They should make this class required for every student in cal poly. The way he explained things changed my view of world history. He was able to explain everything clearly and very fair grading. Before his exams, he will pass out a study guides that will have everything u need on the exams, not all of the materials but he will pick some of them out. Weekly map quiz and reading quiz will be given. He is easy to talk to. He is not biased at any of the materials he taught in class. MUST TAKE HIM!!!!

AMAZING TEACHER! Seriously one of the nicest professors you will ever meet. He genuinely cares about his students\' success, and goes out of his way to help you while engaging you in the subject at the same time. Map quizzes every week- piece of cake- as well as online reading quizzes- which are open book and you are given plenty of time (we never read before the quizzes). Then a midterm and final, both essay format. You have to REALLY study for the midterm and final, but the material is memorable from the lectures and he will have really helpful review sessions. I\'d recommend him to everyone.

Professor Hopper is a very knowledgeable professor, but I felt his grading methods were way too strict and his expectations were way too high. He tried to keep the 2-hour lecture interesting with video clips and the once-in-a-blue-moon activity, but what I really wanted instead was for him to see my raised hand and actually call on me, which he almost never did. Also, he rarely gave the class a break; isn't that required for a 2-hour class? I pride myself in being a straight A student, but as much as I tried in this class I could not manage better than a B+. He even gave us a handout after the midterm explaining why he graded it so hard, as if that could justify his actions. Unless you are a history major, I do not recommend this class if you want to boost your grade point average, because this teacher's grading methods are truly unfair.

Matt was really an excellent teacher. He hold study sessions prior to the midterm and final and if you go to them you should be fine! The class is hard, don't get me wrong. A LOT of work, but worth it! You really learn a lot...although you might not get the grade you want for a GE because he grades the essay exams really harshly. If you want an easy way out, don't take this class. If you want to broaden your horizons and actually learn something in college, take Hopper!

Professor Hopper knows his stuff, and he is a decent lecturer. I could never quite get excited about his lectures, and I love history. The class is pretty straight forward - reading quizzes and map quizzes once a week, one midterm, and the final. The reading quizzes are on about 100 pages of reading, but you didn't have read too in depth to do well. The map quizzes are easy points and he drops the lowest map and reading quiz. The midterm consists of 5 short answer and an essay. He is a very, very strict grader, so be sure you remember as many facts as possible but most importantly his idea of the significance of each term.. He is super helpful in his office hours (which he extends the day before the midterm and final). Overall, decent class for a GE but not a walk in the park.

Ugh, I'm hesitant to give a perfect score to this teacher because of how strict a grader he is.. but he is a good teacher nonetheless. He is very knowledgeable on all material. I recommend doing the weekly readings in one sitting and then taking the online quiz in order to better retain the material (the book is hard to retain!). Use highlighters for names and quotes (different colors), it makes looking up answers in the book easier if you use this system.

Hopper is extremely fair in his grading and takes extra time during the week to hold prep sessions for his tests. Show up, take notes, read his book, use the index on quizzes, be efficient on studying, and there's no reason you cant get an A. Besides that, this is one of the few world history classes you'll get a non eurocentric viewpoint, and the stuff you learn in this class will give you a much more worldly view than you had walking in by far. I'm not big on classes where you learn a lot and have your grade suffer a ton, but this class you can definitely get a great grade and learn a bunch of cool stuff about the world.

Hopper is very knowledgeable on the subject he teaches, and although sometimes dry (the subject, that is), he tries his best to be engaging and interesting. The midterms/finals/quizzes are very doable and the essays are graded very fairly. I would say lectures are pretty important to attend, and reading (at least skimming) the required texts is in your best interest. You cannot BS the reading quizzes, though you can pull a B or A on the midterm/final without reading as long as you pay good attention in class.

This was his first quarter here and I'm glad he went here from UCLA. I chose staff when i selected my prof. for 215, because the other professors had horrible ratings, and this guy was like a diamond in the rough. He knows his history and almost never reads off the powerpoints and comes prepared. There is one midterm, one final, map quizzes, and reading quizzes. The map quizzes you should get 100% everytime. The reading quizzes can be tough if you didn't read -- 10 multiple choice on about 80 pages of reading a week. That is the only bummer about the class is the heavy reading load required, but he does give you about 3 of the 9 quizzes for take home. The tests are all written, but the good thing is that he gives you the terms and essay questions before the tests. So it is a matter of you studying massively on about 40 terms (people, events, ideas) and 3 essay questions, only 1 appears on the midterm. It is easy to get a B, but an A is damn near impossible.

I liked Dr. Hopper, but he is new, and doesn't quite realize yet that his students don't really care about history since 215 is just a GE class. He seemed hurt when students didn't show up to class (about half the class was missing each session) which is the reason I went to every single one. He is probably the nicest teacher I've ever had, he's funny, and he REALLY cares about his students, but unless you are a history major, I wouldn't take this class to fulfill a GE because it is pretty laborious. I worked my butt off and could not get an A simply because there is just too much stuff he wants you to remember. His lecture slides usually have little to do with the weekly reading, so the amount of information really piles up. He recognizes this though and gives you a study guide with all the terms and essay questions that may appear on the tests, but this isn't of much help because there are so many. But yea, to break it down, there's one midterm, one non-comprehensive final, 8 reading quizzes and 5 geography quizzes (he drops your lowest score in each quiz category). Hopper is cool and a great teacher, but I feel like he belongs teaching upper division history classes where people will actually attend class, listen to him, and care about the subject!

Dr. Hopper is one of the best teachers I have had here. I am even taking a class on a subject I have no interest in this quarter because it fulfills my requirements and he is teaching it so i know i will learn and enjoy the class. He is one of he best organized and well prepared teachers I know. It is a history class and he still tries to make it "hands on" by doing mini field trips on campus and bringing items into class and doing demonstrations in class. His tests are fair and he prepares you well. He does a lot of powerpoints and movies and he takes role on five unannounced days to make five percent of your grade. It worked out for me. He asked everyone their hobby on the first day of school and said that his was students and he basically doesn't have much time outside of school and preparing for class. I believe him. Hopper is a great teacher and a really great guy. His class is very fun. I really appreciated the extra reading we did because it actually applied to the class. He makes really good jokes, on the daily. Also, his tests are legit. He outlines everything that could possibly be on the test in what format it should be in. I loved this class. Matt Hopper is awesome. He's genuinely funny and enjoys showing clips from Hollywood historical fiction movies and talking about everything they got wrong. His powerpoints during lecture are slick, and there's almost always a video clip from a documentary or film or even his own footage from trips to Egypt. During the heatwave in fall quarter his wife and son came to class and brought everyone ice cream and popsicles. It doesn't get better than that. Course load: not bad at all. Weekly online reading quizzes that are pretty easy to knock out, and a written midterm and final that are challenging and require a fair amount of studying, but are reasonable. He also will have study group things before the midterms to help students understand as much as possible. Would absolutely recommend, one of my favorite teachers at Cal Poly so far.

I was a little worried about this course at the beginning of the quarter because I am not a history major, but I am SO glad I took this class! Hopper is without a doubt the most intelligent and helpful professor I had this quarter. I was never bored in his lectures (even though they were two hours) and he often let us out early. I felt like I learned so much in that class and found myself actually THINKING about and pondering some of the concepts outside of class. The work-load is VERY manageable with a weekly reading quiz and map quiz. We only had one midterm and a final which were very reasonable! If you want an A on the tests you will have to study your butt off, but he gives a super helpful and clear study guide that tells you exactly what you need to know. As far as attendance, he took it on five random days throughout the quarter and each day was worth 1% of your grade, so definitely go to class! Hopper is an amazing professor! He is truly passionate about what he is teaching and really knows his stuff. Hes also funny and just a cool guy. The class is broken down like this: 5% attendance (he randomly calls roll 5 times during the quarter and you get 1% each time), 10% weekly map quizzes (super easy, memorize a map with around 20 locations each time, you can do it 30 minutes before class and get an A. plus he will drop your lowest score), 20% weekly reading quizzes (a little bit more difficult than the map quizzes. they are online and timed. you dont necessarily have to read the books but have them handy so you can look through and find the answer. actually reading is helpful for the exams though. again, he drops the lowest score), 30% midterm (you are given all of the answers ahead of time. what i mean by this is he will give you a list of 36 "ID" terms which you need to learn. he puts 8 on the test and expects you to answer 5 of them. the study guide also includes 3 essay prompt, of which he will choose 1 to put on the exam. so make note cards of all the terms and outline the essays and youll do fine), and finally a 35% final (same format as the midterm, but you will have longer to write so he will grade it harder). This class does require some work but is extremely doable and he is very very helpful, he has extra office hours before each exam to answer any questions and responds to emails very quickly. definitely take Hopper if you can, the class is pretty easy, the material is interesting (youre def guaranteed to walk away with a totally different view of history), and hes a super cool prof.

He is genuinely funny and he really loves history, whether it is throwing pieces of string around the class to show things about Charles V or making weird noises when explaining the family line of Genghis Khan. He is extremely helpful during office hours and has extra before exams. He gives you a study guide, and if you follow what he says, you'll get an A. There is a lot of reading, so prepare to hunker down for about 6 hours each week. There are online quizzes each week, and you can look through you books. There were weekly map quizzes in class that are free points and 5 times he takes attendance for free points. During the first week of the quarter, I was struggling to find a class I could crash to fulfill my 12 unit requirement. I crashed about 5+ classes and didn't even get into one of them. I found this class at the last minute on pass and ran straight to class (it was like 10 minutes before class was actually over). Of course I was desperate to take almost any class at the time and didn't know what I was getting into. I didn't look up polyratings or anything prior to taking this class. I managed barley get into the class and I have to say.......it was totally worth it. He's got to be one of the best teacher's I've had at cal poly. His personality will hook you into his lectures. Of course it's easily possible to fall asleep in the class since it's literally 2 hours worth of lecturing (pure talking) but yes, one again it's worth it. He's super helpful in his office hours / extra office hours before the tests. He gives you a study guide with all the terms and 3 possible essays. He chooses 1 random essay from the 3 and 8 identifications (you get to pick 5). There are weekly reading quizzes and map quizzes. The map quizzes are a breeze. Just study them like an hour before the test and you can easily get 100%. The reading quiz are a bit different however. I would recommend actually taking the time to read the material since they'll help you with the reading quizzes (you only have 20 minutes for 10 questions so you won't have much time to just skim around) and be on the test and will help you keep up with the lectures. Overall I really enjoyed this class. I have learned so much about history that I would've never known about if I didn't take this class. I definitely recommend this professor.

I truly enjoyed attending Prof. Hopper's class. He made the class fun. Prof. Hopper has a way of taking history and 120 students and making it into a very relatable, entertaining class. Now, I'm not the best History student there ever was and my test grades were not that high, but this class called to me. The time period was intriguing, and the professor, no doubt, is amazing. The books that Prof. Hopper assigned were easy to read and entertaining (Even if you don't take this class, I recommend "A Voyage Long and Strange"). The lectures are all put online just before the midterm and the final, but I suggest writing additional notes on what he verbally says (the slides of the powerpoints don't make sense on their own). The only thing I didn't like about this class was how I close I was to getting an A. Outside of that, Professor Hopper is one of my favorite professors yet. He teaches an interesting subject, sure, but he makes it even more fun simply with his attitude and methods. The lectures are clear and he puts the powerpoints online just in case you need them. He always has interesting videos, quotes, and even once an in-class activity which was very entertaining. As for the actual work, as mentioned there's random days of roll, very easy map quizzes, and very easy reading quizzes (as long as you do the reading, which isn't too bad although sometimes can be a bit long). You should get 100% on those things, which makes up 45% of your grade. The hard part is the midterm and final; there's a ton of terms to have memorized (30), and while he gives you all the information needed in lecture and the books, because of that he grades your tests hard. I studied a ton for both, and could only get a B on both resulting in a B+ for the class. I strongly recommend him though, it's fun, easy B, and if you work hard you can get an A. I definitely know a lot I didn't know before as well.

Professor Hopper was great at presenting material effectively, and was overall a very good history professor. He made sure you had all the tools for success at your fingertips-- all you had to do was pay attention in lecture and do the readings. He does assign a lot of readings, but they're interesting for the most part and helpful. The material of HIST 222 was very interesting, and his expert knowledge on Africa was a plus. My biggest problem with him did not really affect how good of a teacher he was, but it did annoy me-- I found him to be very condescending. He spent the majority of the class convincing us about the problems with Eurocentrism the "Rise of the West" narrative, something that me and the majority of the rest of the class was very well aware of from the start. He seemed to think that all of our history teachers up to that point had been racist or very uneducated, and it made me sad. However, if you're looking for an overall interesting class and don't mind a bit of the same thing over and over again, take Hopper!

I took this professor to fulfill one of my general education classes. This professor is definitely very enthusiastic and very engaging. He knows what he is talking about and is very passionate on what he talks about. He even adds his own personal experiences visiting historical landmarks. He is definitely very helpful during office hours and cares for students taking his class. I do sometimes get bored during lectures, but that is just the topic itself (I'm taking it as a GE), not the teacher. There are weekly reading quizzes which isn't hard if you take your time, but a lot of hours isn't needed to do the reading quiz successfully. But, you have to read the book. Google searching wouldn't really help in most cases. The weekly map quizzes are a piece of cake. All I did is study using online map quizzes for less than thirty minutes, then I'll get 100%. There's also attendance points for 5 randomly selected days and times. He usually does it at the end of class. Two major exams are in this class: a midterm and a final. I got a B- on the midterm and an A- on the final. He gives out a study guide which has two sections: Identification terms, which are for the multiple choice sections, and three prompts, which one of them would be selected for the essay portion of the exam. To do well in the exam, make a study guide using notes from the lectures, which he will post all of them online, and your readings as well. Very helpful to grab a study partner, but very manageable to study by yourself. Overall, easy B, and an A is definitely very possible if you put the work in. I walked out thinking differently about history in a positive way.

BE PREPARED! This class is a lot of work. The course syllabus is almost identical to his graduate class and we were told that it is also largely similar to a first year graduate course at Princeton. That being said, TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HOPPER! Just take it with as few units as possible. The purpose of this course is to examine and analyze various approaches to historical writing. Throughout the quarter you will read Marx, Gramsci, Freud, Foucault, and many other theorists that fall into "schools" of thought. You can expect about 120 pages of reading a week in addition to periodic response papers throughout the quarter. The reading is dense, so it's not an easy 120 pages. Expect to spend a lot of time trying to extract what the author is actually saying. There is no final for this class but you will have to do a 15-21 paper. That seems intimidating and though it is a lot of work, it really is just three 5-7 page papers put together. For at least one of those sections you will probably have already done most of the work as part of a response paper. Those of you that know Dr. Hopper know that he is a super nice guy and is legitimately concerned that you learn the material, so as long as you put forward a strong effort he will help you out as much as possible. It's a lot of work, but it's a super valuable class to take.

Dr. Hopper is the best professor I have had in my four years at Cal Poly. I\'ve taken 3 classes of his while here, and am enrolled in a fourth. Yes, there is reading. But he makes you want to read the material. 304 usually is not the most fun class, but I really enjoyed it, and read every week! You learn a TON from him. TAKE Hopper if you can!!

Professor Hopper is my most FAVORITE professor at Cal Poly! He is so funny and makes learning whatever you are learning fun and interesting. For Historiography there was a TON of reading. I think I almost died from the amount of reading each night. But, I did learn how to read history in an effective manner and how to synthesize the material. Hopper also helps each student understand every reading so if you come to class with at least attempting to the reading you will be fine.I felt more accomplished after this class than any other I have taken at Cal Poly. If you get the chance go to his office hour and just talk to him! Most amazing guy ever. I also took him for 221 and he was great in the large lecture class too. Take Hopper if you get the chance!

No lies this class was strenuous. There is a lot of reading and writing and he has a pretty high standard for his students. But although during the quarter I died a little bit every day, the end result was SOOOOO worth it. You become such a better writer and learn to read a ton. After this class I feel like I can handle any other class ever. Professor Hopper told us that this is basically the level at which a grad school class would be. If you want to actually learn stuff and grow as a student, this is the class for you. And Professor Hopper is actually really cool and nice. He is interested in his student's success and really heplful.

Dr. Hopper is one of my all time favorite human beings. The class is a lot of work and very hard BUT he sets you up to do well and is so willing to help. You read a different theorist a week and write a 4 page response regarding the material for every theorist. He drops the lowest response score at the end of the quarter. The final 20 page paper seems much more daunting than it actually is and he is so helpful when it comes to writing it! My writing improved in this class so much and I definitely feel prepared for grad school now. He requires class participation everyday since it is set up like a seminar class, and I am not one to participate often. However, he is very good at acknowledging when certain students dominate participation so if you participate a few times everyday or more some days than others you will be good. He is a hilarious, wonderful human that you will want to be best friends with. TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HOPPER

Professor Hopper is wonderful. Of course, every class is what you make of it, but if you feel the desire to be inspired he will certainly put forth the effort- all you must do is meet him half way. As a professor he is understanding and accommodating to student needs, as he is still new he still maintains the every lovely quality of caring about his students and recognizing their lives.. outside of Poly! I've said enough, he's great;)

I have taken numerous classes with Dr. Hopper and have found him to be the most genuine, humble, helpful professor that I have had at Cal Poly. Although the state university system in California is becoming a joke, Cal Poly included,Dr. Hopper has made my education worthwhile and has inspired me to become more educated for the sake of helping those whom my education can benefit. He is very flexible with students and is extremely passionate about giving students the best education of which he is capable of giving. He is extremely well informed, especially in topics on African history, and is a great resource. His classes require a lot of reading and a lot of writing. However, you will be grateful and proud of the work that you put into his classes. I will concede that Dr. Hopper is hard to get a hold of at times, whether it is in his office, on the telephone, or email. Nonetheless, everyone should afford themselves the opportunity to take a class with Dr. Hopper. It is truly an honor.

Dr. Hopper is not a good teacher. He runs his class more like a stand up comedy act, and sees popularity as the most important thing. When I took Hopper he targeted me in his class. He said we would get equal opportunity to get a shot at thesis topics for the quarter from his list. i selected two and raised my hand at the appropriate time and he selected the two others instead with no explanation. I would not have minded had he not promised "an equal chance". At the time both the other students saw it as odd also. later I researched the Annalis Journal, where Hopper had published an article based on based on his doctoral thesis at UCLA under professor Broduer, an big wig of that journal. Wikipedia clearly states about Annalis, "that they are hostile to academics sympathetic to Marx." Unfortunately for Matthew S. Hopper, he had included a book on Marx for the general 501 masters seminar. He used this book to identify and target students sympathetic to Marxian or neo-Marxian beliefs. Later when my uncle died i had to take 2 quarters off. Despite having nearly a 3.5 average, having proctored 4 exams, and only having two seminar left Dr. Hopper did not allow my return to the program. As master's director he had full authority in the matter and it was 100% his decision according to Dean Lavar-Valencia. Beware Dr. Hopper. he is not an ethical person. His doctoral thesis attempts to shift the culpability of slavery the West clearly has to the Middle East. He is a coward and a quasi-academic and should be treated as such.

Dr. Hopper is one of the best in the history department. He helped me with my writing and took time to help me with the class. Dr. hopper is humble with his students, and is very nice. I recommend his classes to anyone. The course load is a lot but it is worth your time. I used written work from his class as writing sample for a top Phd program in the world, to which I got in. I would not be where I am today, without Dr. Hopper. Again, I encourage all to take his classes.
