I think this teacher used to be Linda Valenty, but she is Professor Shepherd now. Nonetheless, the one-unit POLS-111 is the same. You show up, listen to her talk a while about what she expects, then you go home and read a book. (which I found as Gerston & Christensen - California Politics & Government - A Practical Approach, 8th Ed..pdf--hint: trust me, its not worth paying $40 at any bookstore) She didn't even show up for the final (due to scheduling conflicts I heard) so someone else proctered it. There is no "lecture" in this "class", which makes rating Shepherd somewhat difficult. She was helpful and understanding in office hours, willing to answer any question I fielded to her. The test was fairly hard and she threw some curveballs on the multiple choice. It turns out California really is the last state per capita in receiving homeland security defense funds from the national government. I barely had time to finish the essay questions either, but she gives you a choice of which 3 essays to write (a good thing). She uploaded a handful of sample questions on Blackboard to help us study. Furthermore, I would suggest NOT taking this class CR/NC unless you have CR/NC units to spare. 1 unit cannot hurt or help your grade much and pass/fail units are better saved for harder classes in my opinion. Overall, I had no problems with Shepherd, and would recommend her for POLS-111 but cannot comment on her other classes.
