Tests aren't that bad and he lets you have a page of cheat sheets front and back for every exam. Homework due every week, but it only takes about an hour. Final is cumulative and you can have 3 pages of cheat sheets.

He is not the saint that Polyratings makes him out to be. He is a very nice guy and a very clear lecturer. But stats is so boring! I had him in the morning and it was easy to go blank and not pay attention. If you have him in the morning, you better get some coffee. He is a stickler of a grader. I thought this class was harder than it should have been. Sklar teaches at a fast pace and its hard to keep up cuz there\'s so much material.

Dr. Sklar was awesome. I thought going into Statistics that it would have been one of my harder classes for that quarter, but it ended up being decently easy because of how good of a teacher he is. All his notes are on slides that he gives you and then he goes over them and does plenty of examples on the board during class. He is super friendly and always answers questions. There are 3 midterms, they are pretty hard and he is a strict grader so make sure you write out everything exactly for his problems (he lets you use a cheat sheet which helps a lot). He is a very generous in curving too. Honestly, if your going to take stats take him. I\'d never taken stats before and got an A thanks to Dr. Sklar.

Professor Sklar is a good teacher, but he goes super fast through all the material, so skipping class isn't an option. 3 midterms, 1 final (worth 30 percent!). His grading is super strict, if you dont have the exact right answer, you're gonna get docked points. I had a difficult time trying to talk to him during office hours, he just kept telling me to check the solutions online, not how to actually do the problem the right way. But he does know his stuff, and gives a curve at the end.

Dr. Sklar was a good stats teacher. He was way into the material and really awake and ready to go each morning. His midterms were fair but his final was difficult. Lot's of work if you want to do well. Not very good in office hours.

I love Prof. Sklar! His notes are great and his lecture is so easy to follow and understand. He made me really enjoy this class. The homeworks were challenging at times, and he did grade them, but they counted for very little of the overall grade. For his tests, all I did was make my cheat sheets and that's all I had to do for studying and I made an 85 on the first test, a 78 on the second, a 86 on the third, and obviously did well enough on the final to get a B in the class. Great teacher! Will help you UNDERSTAND Statistics

I had this class at 8 am 4 days a week, and I was very surprised by how relatively painless it was. Stats is boring, but Mr. Sklar kept it pretty light. I was impressed that every morning - despite the fact that he has young kids - he was far more alert and chipper than I was, and his hair was always perfectly gelled. As for the class, there were 3 midterms, homework assignments every week, activities in class, and the final. You get 10 points for doing all the homework problems, and another 20 for doing selected ones right. The midterms are really straight forward, and while he is very generous in giving partial credit, he also takes it if you don't have your wording perfect. The class activities are basically just credit for attendance, but on one of those random extra-days-to-make-up-for-a-holiday we got up to 20 points extra homework points for doing the activity, which was really nice. Overall, Mr. Sklar was a good but strict teacher who made a boring subject tolerable at 8am.

this professor explained the material very well and his slide show notes were very helpful. his exams are a little difficult, but they're straightforward. just study his notes and review problems in his notes. i didn't expect to get an A, but after paying attention in class and studying a little every night, i got the material. theres something about the way he explains things that makes you get it. now i'm taking Rein and i'm having so much trouble. If only sklar taught 252!

Sklar is incredibly upbeat and into his subject. He had so much energy it was easy to pay attention to his lectures. He handed out copies of his powerpoint slides everyday so I just took some notes on those. We did a lot of examples as a class on the board, but I wish we got to work together with our classmates more. It was a little too lecture oriented for a math class I thought. There was a homework assignment each week. His tests got harder as the quarter went on, but he is an INCREDIBLY EASY GRADER. Wrong answers will be like -1/2 a point and such. There were three midterms and a cumulative final, and he reviewed before each one. He lets you use a page for notes, but no examples :( Overall it was a pretty easy class if you put in the time and payed attention in class.

Sklar is a pretty good teacher. He can present the information clearly but the subject matter was pretty hard for me. When you take the class make sure you don't fall behind because it will kick your ass when it comes to test time. His first test is the easiest. The 2nd and 3rd will be substantially harder.

sklar is pretty dope. He gives you lecture notes everyday that are straightforeward he has 3 midterms and a final. homework is like 10%(give away) or soemthing. Basically a mellow guy and the midterms are easy. He will throw some extra credit one a couple rare days. You can buy the book to do hw or practice problems, but you don't need the book for material. I was stoked to get an A- bc i got an 80,86,84 on the midterms

Sklar is a great teacher, and he is really helpful during office hours. He teaches the material well and is really cute and funny at the same time. Mostly, just because you get a cheat sheet during the exam, doesn't mean you shouldn't study. I made that mistake. His exams don't really follow the homework 100%- he'll throw in a few random problems that appear to have little to do with what we did in class but are really just a complex representation of every formula and problem we did- in one giant problem. His final wooped my butt and I studied forever. He curves in the end though. I really recommend him though, he is a really good teacher, just tough.

Dr. Sklar is awesome. I would highly recommend him! I have heard a lot of bad things about some stats teacher but Dr. Sklar is a really good professor. He is always at office hours which are very helpful and he is very good at explaining things that are unclear in class. He also has extra office hours sometimes before exams. I think he truly cares about how his students do in his class. He gives you the exact type of problems that you will need to know for the exams. There are 3 exams and 1 final. 10% homework. 20% each midterm and 30% final. I would highly recommend taking Sklar he is one of the best professors I have had at Cal Poly.

Professor Sklar was an awesome teacher. He teaches at a good rate and makes sure his students understand the material well. Also, his notes are very helpful and comprehensive which become very useful for the midterms and final. He sure loves his coffee which makes him extra enthusiastic during class, so he creates a easygoing atmosphere when he lectures. I would definitely take his class if you want to learn STATS well and have a nice, understanding professor.

You better be just as jacked up on coffee as his is during class otherwise you will be falling asleep. He\'s a cool guy and good teacher but stats is not fun. I don\'t know other teachers so I wouldn\'t say not to take him, but I think he\'s just an typical college teacher. His tests are tough, his lectures get dry, and the material isn\'t very easy to get whats going on. But he is cool, and smart so he\'s got that going for him

Professor Sklar LOVES Statistics. I had a morning class, and as long he has his mug of Starbucks, he is all pumped and ready to go. You have to buy his course notes, but they contain the lecture slides that have problems with some of his clever \"Sklarbucks\" puns written inside. There are activities that you do in class to check attendance which go into the Homework grade. There are three midterms and a final. Professor Sklar is very laid back and is there during Office Hours and as long as you have a decent excuse, he\'ll let you turn in homework until the end of the day.

Sklar was a good teacher, pretty boring and way too hyped up on caffeine. I had the 8am class every Monday through Thursday, so I hated going. He doesn\'t require you to go to the class, but sometimes he gives out class handouts and you turn them in at the end for participation and homework points. Not too tough of a class, took AP in high school so I barely studied for any of it ever except for about an hour for homework each week and an hour for each midterm. 3 midterms, 1 final. Final is a lot tougher than the midterms. The tests are basically your whole grade so don\'t screw up on them like I did the first one. Could have gotten an A if the first midterm wasn\'t as bad. I liked that he made his own notebook of all his powerpoints so you didn\'t need to take any extra notes.

Sklar is a reasonable teacher. I think we had 3 midterms and a final. Homework was around 15%, and worksheets (once a week) 10%. My percentages might be a little off. Homework load is small, and midterms and final are all reasonable. He can be nit picky, but I think most stat teachers are. Hyped up everyday so makes a boring subject pretty bearable. I definitely think he helps you out at the end if you participated, because I felt I did really bad on the final yet ended with a higher grade than I did coming in. Solid teacher, I would recommend him. Way better than my stat 252 teacher now.

Sklar was a good teacher. I didn't really like his class, or him for that matter, but he really does his best to convey the material. This dude was really cool. He has a very calming voice, and knows his statistics very well. He was very sharply dressed every morning and always smiled. He's the kind of teacher that you want to shake hands with at the end of class thanking him for his time. It's also one of those classes you cannot miss, unless you are able to learn on your own well. All these reviews are pretty spot on, but I also recommend that you sit close to the front of the classroom and make friends with the people around you. Get their contact info, and have study sessions together. This was the very first class I ever took at Cal Poly and so far he's been the most informative and competent teacher I've had thus far.

It's difficult to write a rating for Sklar. On the one hand he gives you a packet with his notes and you just follow along during class. Homework is about once a week and it probably takes little more than an hour to do. On the other hand his tests are frustrating because there I felt there was little margin for error and that's bad in a class that's 90% tests. You have to know the material inside and out but at least he gave us good practice. PRACTICE THE HANDOUTS IN CLASS BECAUSE THEY ARE VERY SIMILAR TO THE KIND OF PROBLEMS YOU HAVE ON THE MIDTERM. I got a 93, 96, 94 on the midterms and got an A in the class. The final was difficult because it was cumulative and many of the concepts were mixed together in the same problem but I have a feeling that he curved it. Overall, a very knowledgeable professor but I personally just didn't like him.

I really enjoyed Professor Sklar's STAT 251 class. After taking AP Stats in high school with the worst teacher I have ever had I was very nervous about taking a college level stats class. With that being said, this class was much more manageable than I had anticipated. It definitely wasn't an easy A but if you put the work in you will do well. If you are struggling at all go to his office hours, they are super helpful and he's fun to get to know as well.

Really excellent teacher, he explains concepts very clearly and is excellent at answering questions. Going to the lectures is very important, he spends the whole 50 minutes explaining new material each day. Midterms and final were fairly difficult but the material on them was all covered in class and on homeworks. The (roughly) weekly homeworks assignments took me 1.5-3 hours each. I'd recommend taking the class with Professor Sklar is you have the option

Sklarr is a very nice man and he seems like he knows what he is talking about. I do not recommend taking his class. He teaches you with powerpoint slides but is very vague about what he is talking about. His tests are worded terribly. The questions on the tests were not anything close to the example problems. Go to the classes that are right before 3 day weekends or any type of holiday because he gives extra credit. PICK A DIFFERENT TEACHER unless you can actually understand what he is saying. There are 3 midterms and a final. I thought the final was a lot easier than the midterms.

Sklar is one of the best teachers/professorsI have ever had. Stats is a difficult class with difficult material and Sklar presents it straight forward and easy to understand. Two things I really liked about Sklar was that he gave clear notes that you could fill in while he taught and you were allowed a note sheet for every test. Sklar is really really nice and a decent teacher. He makes you buy a workbook that has all his powerpoint slides and it comes in really handy (and for stat 252 as well). Besides that, he goes through a TON of material extremely quickly and doesn't go over some fundamental topics enough, and you can really get behind. He doesn't provide enough examples for his topics, and his tests are Waaaaayyyy harder than any of the practice sheets he hands out. But he also lets you have a full page of notes (front and back) to use as a cheat sheet on his tests. My only advice is to read the textbook beforehand so you're not starting from scratch when you get into his fast-paced classroom.

Sklar has the most skewed (right) polyrating I've ever seen. This class is not only hard to learn in, but the class has extinguished all motivation and interest for the subject of Stats for me. Alright where do I start, for those of you reading this you probably haven't taken stats so ill use a more simplified example of what this class entails. In class example: 2+2=4, Homework: (7+10)/2= 8.5. Test: With 2 sheep flying, one with red hair and the other headed north, how much does a pound of asphalt cost, given that the lemur is 10 years old? Professor Sklar is awesome instructor who really makes an effort to get to know his students. By the third week he memorized all of our names!!! I was really impressed by the way Sklar taught the material to the class. Before teaching us things (like formulas) he makes sure that we understand the the reasoning behind why we take each step. Basically, he teaches us in detail and it helps a lot on the tests! Sklar makes us a buy a workbook at the beginning of the quarter which is great because it makes notes really organized. His tests can be difficult but TAKE A WORKSHOP and it helps sooo much! There usually is a homework assignment due once a week. Sklar's teaching style is a bit different than the books which makes doing homework not very helpful in learning the material, but the activity worksheets he gives on occasion help a lot. Yeah, Sklar is great! I'm excited to take him again next quarter.

Sklar was a great professor. Very friendly and makes you feel very comfortable asking questions. He gives 1 homework assignment per week so there was always plenty of time to finish it. As for the exams there were 3 midterms and a final. He allows one 8x11 sheet of paper (front and back) for every midterm and you are free to write formulas and any other things to help you... but no examples. For the final he allows four sheets of paper and you are allowed to use the ones you already made for the midterms so I suggest keeping them and really spending time to make them quality- it helps a ton! This was the first class I had as a college student and he eased my nerves with his outgoing and corky personality. Grading can be tough, he is a little nit-picky but that comes with any STATS course.

His class is very linear and structured; he follows his slides and seldom deviates. With that being said, his lectures are NOT engaging. All these evaluations are too good to be true... that’s why they are in 2006. I normally don’t write about anyone, unless it’s this bad. He is still at poly and after many years he finally came to the conclusion that his job sucks and that he has a wack Mohawk. This guy will beat you down in class and laugh at you because you don’t know something. As someone else said in the forum, he does essentially read off a script during lecture. His notes are easy to understand, but one will never know the “why” to why a problem is done that way. He states that he doesn’t care about many things, but when it comes to the midterms, he will dock you down for every little mistake; even typos. Class has 3 midterms, one final, labs that eventually become hw, and hw that doesn’t correspond to how he wants problems to be done since the hw problems are out of a textbook. Midterms are fucked, they take forever; which you don’t have time for. He will purposely use key words, so you don’t understand the question he is asking and they are def not like the notes he gives. He does let us bring cheat sheets, but essentially you will never have time to use it because you have like 45 minutes to take a midterm. Failed the first midterm and bounced back to get a passing grade. I would go to his office hours and he would literally give no fucks. You would ask a question and he will respond with “I said that in class” or “look it up in the textbook” he literally was no help, and he would get furious when there would be more than one student in his office hours. Claims he uses participation to boost your grade but that’s a complete lie. Literally it seems like this guy took a whole 180 Degree toll on himself. Absolutely horrible professor. Tries to be chill, but everyone knows it’s just fake. if you take him, I warned you! I got a 100 percent in intro stats, but not this course...

In a way I understand but all in all its hard to keep up. He does not like to be asked questions which is extremely frustrating when your stuck. Yet, the course was straight forward and he is not like most professors who will throw curve ball after curveball on exams. His tests are straightforward which was refreshing. Sklar is a really nice guy. His lectures can get a little boring, but they are straight forward and easy to understand. He does not post his lectures on polylearn, so you have to go to class. The last 30 min of class was a data activity, where you used Minitab to apply whatever he lectures about that day. His tests were straight forward and of appropriate difficulty. Sklar is a pretty great professor. Sometimes, he'll seem like he's not willing to help or that he doesn't understand why you don't understand it, which is a little annoying, but he still ends up helping you, so that's what counts, right?

I don\'t know what it is, but Sklar seems to struggle teaching 419 compared to other courses I\'ve had with him. His style is the same in all the courses I\'ve had with him, and normally that works out fine. But for some reason that style doesn\'t make 419 material very clear or interesting. By far my favorite professor at Cal Poly. His notes for the class entails a pre-designed book that is organized and constructed by Sklar himself. He explains the material extremely clear if you pay attention in class and attend lectures you should have no problem with the material. The homework's are very reasonable and matches what he lectures. There are is a one day a week lab where you practice using the program R on problems (which you will also use on the homeworks, so the lab allows you to practice for the hw and ask questions.) The only small complaint is that the first midterm was a little too lengthy, however he curved the midterm to counter this. The final was also very fair and clearly represented the material he taught in class lectures. Overall, amazing professor and one of my favorite classes at Cal Poly.
