Dr. Pettey is an awesome teacher. He goes slowly with his powerpoint presentations to insure that all of the students understand what is going on. He tells you exactly what is important in the notes, and what is just extra information. He is not boring at all, and keeps you entertained by his constant pictures of pigs, he definitely loves them. Overall, a great professor to start off a college career with.

Dr. Pettey, is a pretty nice guy. He is super energetic, and loves to talk. If you were ever in the FFA, he is an ex state preident, if that gives you an idea. I strongly stronlgy encourage NOONE to take his class. If you are planing on learning anything about aniaml science, don't take it from him. Dr. Petteys lectures consisits of two hours of continuouse talking and about one hundred slide (this is in one class period). He loves the sound of his voice and will ramble for hours. He forgets thats that he is teaching a 112 class. His fainal was the hardest test i have ever taken, and HE only got a B on it..... He wrote it! He expects you to know an absurd amount of information, that he talked about for a few seconds, than started rambaling agian. His study guide did not make any sence and bounced from one subject to the next. He did not put half of the test on the study guide, and told us to study notes that he didn't even post on black board. We had a substitue for two days. The sub would cover a topic for the whole class that pettey woud cover in ten minutes. He expects you to be a genius and likes to feel like a hard teacher, so do not take him unless you are ready to study for hours at a time and let your grades in other classes suffer, and still do bad.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! Yes, he can be entertaining BUT he acts like it is a 400 level class. This class kicked my ass, I studied like crazy, and the average test score was a D!! He never curved, just made the second midterm count twice. Doesn't this say theres something wrong with his teaching? You have to memorize every little detail on anatomy, digestion, etc. You won't earn the grade you deserve.

Okay so I know people think asci 112 is extremely difficult, but ITS NOT. it may be a 100-level course, but it isnt like a 100-level english class. it's science...it's hard. Think about the other 100-level science classes...chem 127-129, bio 160-162, etc. these are all hard classes, and asci 112 is no more difficult than these in spite of what you may have heard in the past. study the material, go to office hours, and show up to class and you'll be fine. dr. pettey is a very intelligent professor and he really knows the material and cares about his students. go to his office if you're having problems, and he will really help you out.

This class was one of the more enjoyable classes I have taken at Cal Poly, and yes the tests were relatively difficult, but if you just GO TO CLASS the lowest grade you can get is a B/C. The tests cover EXACTLY what is on the powerpoint slides from class, and those are available on black board. Pettey keeps his lectures moving quickly and interesting. A great class for anyone interested in a basic understanding of animal science. Obviously the more experience you already have, the easier the class will be, but it is definitely do-able for someone with absolutely no experience with livestock at all.

The first midterm was a disaster, the average was well below a D. Luckily he lets you drop your lowest midterm. Besides that the class wasn't too bad, you do have to study, go to class, and look over the lecture slides. The material is interesting and easy to pick up. I didn't like his organization and the order he presented material during lecture, it seemed a bit scattered. Overall he is an above average professor.

This was my first livestock class and I throughly enjoyed it. I did not know what to expect from working with pigs, but Dr. Pettey made it interesting and fun. The class is taught with powerpoint, which you could download from blackboard if you needed to. The material was not difficult if you went to class and reviewed it before tests and quizzes. I highly recommend Dr. Pettey, not only because he is a great teacher that I learned a lot from, but also because he is an all around nice guy.

Dr. Pettey is an amazing teacher. He truly cares about his subject and thoroughly enjoys teaching the information to his students. He is very accesible in office hours and really tries to help you out. The class is not difficult as long as you really study the material. It's not one of those classes where you can just go and do well on the tests, you actually have to study. The final was unique and I thought it was fair. He gave essay questions ahead of time and then chose a few of them to put on the test, so you had plenty of time to prepare a strong response. Lab is also very fun! Overall, he's a great teacher and a nice guy.

I thought that Dr. Pettey was a great teacher. He is clearly very knowledgeable and into swine. I have taken all the other species classes already except poultry, and I thought that this was one of the easiest ones. You really do need to pay attention and take notes, but he is nice and posts the notes online as well. I highly suggest actually copying the notes, for the last midterm I just studied the notes off the website, and I got a C- on that test, where the other tests where I took notes with I got an A. There are a few easy homework assignments, which are basically free points toward your grade. Overall, its hard because I had this class at 8am, and I did fall asleep a lot, but if you pay attention, and GO TO LAB, you should do just fine. Lab taught me most about this class, and it was much more fun than lecture because of the hands on. There were three midterms and a cumulative final. He also gave us the questions for the final before hand, and he picked several off the list for us to answer. So of course, know how to answer all the questions for the final in depth and you should have no problems getting an A on the final. Great teacher overall!

Pettey is a really great teacher. Some of the comments below are rather stupid, of course he wants you to know details about anatomy, digestion etc, that is his JOB! This isn't a hard class by any means, even if you have had no experience with pigs, like me. Lecture was hard so early in the morning, but at least he sort of understands, he never faulted anyone for falling asleep. Lab was great, as long as you don't mind getting a little dirty, and if you do and your an ASCI major I would say you made the wrong choice. He is pretty firm on attendance for lab, but its free points for doing what your supposed to be doing anyways. Midterms and finals were fairly easy, the information is fairly straightforward, he is very approachable and really interesting to talk to if you ever have questions. Great teacher overall.

Dr. Pettey is a wonderful professor and is very passionate about what he teaches. He love talking about pigs! We went over everything from farrowing to finishing. The lab was very hands on, which made it a lot of fun. In the lab, we got to process piglets, draw blood, and even artificially inseminate some of the sows. Dr. Pettey was always engaging and is very outgoing. The class is not easy. He expects you to know and understand all the material covered in class, (there is no required text for this class.) If you have any questions, do not hesitate to go to office hours, he is very helpful. I would highly recommend him to anyone in animal science. The class is a bit challenging, but it is well worth your time.

Dr. Petty was an amazing teacher and has a great sense of humor, even at 8 in the morning. Just be sure to go to class and write down what he actually says, not just what\'s on the powerpoints. Dr. Petty requires that you do a bit more practical thinking when compared to other species classes. Highly recommended
