His labs were always interesting and informational. He explains alot about the labs at the beginning of class, so it makes it easier. The lab tests are hard, but if you study, you are bound to pass with a decent grade. I enjoy coming to his lab class because you can tell he really loves his job. I highly recommend this energetic and extrememly intellegent teacher!!

Dr. Hillers is awesome. He will constantly make you laugh during lab. He's very helpful and not at all like some of those professors who are intimidating. You can joke along with him and that makes lab so much more enjoyable. He also hints at you of what will be on the exams which is very helpful because they are extremely hard. But he's not the one who makes up the exams. Just make sure you know every detail in all the labs. Take Hillers!

I took Dr. Hillers for a survey of genetics class. I would highly recommend him to anyone who is considering taking this class. He is always energetic and enthusiastic about the subject and will take the time to help you understand the material if you are willing to put effort into the class. His tests were fair and straightforward.

Hillers is cool. We got a few Thursdays off and I didn't go to class much (because I had to work at night) but I read the book and asked questions when I was there to clarify and he was able to answer them and make things clear. I took this because 302 was conflicting time wise with another class but I'm glad I did, Hillers was funny and really tried to get everyone to understand what he was saying. He always took time to answer people's questions.

Hillers is hilariously weird and an entertaining person to sit through lecture with. Very excited about his material, though can sometimes get a little *too* excited. Still I had a great quarter and never wanted to miss one of his high energy lectures. Go to lecture, pay attention, do the homework and you should be set to get a great grade in the class! I half assed all the homework otherwise I probably would had gotten an A

This is by far the most dreadful, annoying, frustrating, hair-pulling, agonizing class I have ever been forced to take against my will at Cal Poly. I have never cried before going to a class just because I hated it so much. Mr. Hillers makes my skin crawl. He takes no questions, and no student seriously. When you ask a question, he responds with " do you want the real answer or the fake answer?" , nearly 90% of the time. Are you fucking kidding me? I want the fucking real answer you ass hole. Actually, please give me the fake answer so I can write down the fake answer on my test and then get points taken off my grade. He also likes to playfully refer to EVERY problem we do in that class as "the hardest genetics problem ever". I fucking swear when he says it I explode from the inside out in pain. His attitude is mocking, annoying, and thinking about ever having to take another class from him again stresses me out. I am actually begging you not to take this class from this professor. I have lost a quarter of my life that I will never get back- I could list at least one hundred things I would rather do before taking this class. You will too if you put ourself in one of those seats, because every day you get a little dumber...You are better off putting off this class every quarter until another professor offers it. I'm going to stop now, bye.

I don't understand why this teacher is getting hate. He's honestly super awesome. He presents the information very clearly and draws everything out on the board. The last evaluator makes it seems like this is the class from hell. They must be on one because this professor is pretty chill and definitely did not make my skin crawl. Yeah he may give sarcastic responses when you ask him something but that's just his type of humor. If anything his sarcasm made this two hour long lecture bearable. I had some good laughs. The first day I sat all the way in the back and I was bored to death. The rest of the quarter I sat in the very front and I had no complaints. His tests are actually pretty easy if you put in the work and do the problems he suggest to do (which I didn't exactly do until the last midterm). There's 3 homework assignments that are pretty similar to what the midterm is going to be like so there aren't any surprises. Very cool teacher with a pretty decent fashion sense.

This man is an amazing teacher. He focused on the important parts of lecture, and then he tested on EXACTLY that...jesus! what a concept! why can't all bio professors do this? His lecture correlates with the book so reading the book after going to lecture totally helps with your understanding. Genetics is a difficult class, but Hillers breaks every concept down to help you understand it better. oh and he's one of those guys that are extremely funny, even though it seems like he doesn't try to be. he's a good kid, take Hillers!

Prof Hillers could be ranked one of the best professors CAL POLY has to offer. He helps you understand the concepts of genetics, with his clever analogy, exams based on the material taught, his desire to share his passion for genetics and show awesome videos from the hippie era on "Protein synthesis: an epic on the cellular level". He is the best! IF you had a choice between genetic instructors...he is the best way to go and better chance to pass such a complex material.

First of all, this class consisted of about 70% prokaryotic genetics. If you are going into a health career field, you may be disappointed by this class. Usually, prokaryotes where covered for any particualar concept being taught and then, sometimes as an after-thought, we would cover the same process as it occurs in eukaryotes, in MUCH less detail. We hardly covered any genetic diseases. We never covered the very interesting, cutting edge topics in genetics like gene therapy or engineering As for Dr. Hilllers...well, as a Bio major I had been eagerly anticipating this class for some time as I think it is a very interesting topic. Unfortunately, Ken Hillers almost KHilled my interest entirely with his uninspired teaching. Don't get me wrong, he's a great guy - witty, charismatic even. But when it comes to teaching, he is very unorganized, unmotivated, and seemingly even lazy. I don't know how many times I heard him say something along the lines of, "what do I want you to know on this slide? Uh, I don't know, who cares right? Next slide!" Ultimately, you never know what is going to be on the test because of the way he lectures. It wouldn't be so bad if he were to hand out a study guide before exams to clarify but he doesn't. He cancelled class on numerous occasions. Once, he was actually honest about his reason for canceling class and just told us "I don't feel like doing this today". I know you freshmen might think this is cool, but its costing your parents a lot of money and ultimately you too if you need to know the info. I think most of his good ratings below are from students who fail to make a distinction between a fun personality and an effective conveyor of information (if you just started reading, he is the first and not the latter). The thing that irked the most though, was his laziness. This man would take weeks to get exams back. I guess no one ever told him that exams ALSO help students evaluate themselves and how they are doing so that they can adjust their study methods accordingly. He NEVER handed back our last mid-term before the final. Over three weeks and he couldn't get it back to us!! This is how lame he is. He promised us that he would have our last mid-term back by finals day. Well, finals day arrived and he passes out teacher evaluations and tells us that while we complete the evals he is going to run up to his office to finish the our last mid-terms "real quick". We finish evals, they're put in the manila envelope, and in comes KHillers. Now that evals are done, he tells us the truth...while, yes he did finish grading the exams, he has yet to actually write the grade on them. So...they are still not ready finals day!!! There ensued minor pandemonium with one student (not me, I promise) even asking for the teacher evals to be passed back out. Final assesment: if you just need the grade and can handle never getting your exams back in a timely fashion- take KHillers, you'll probably like the class. If you are interested in genetics and/or need to actually learn the information, avoid this man at all costs!

Yea, the last person nailed it pretty good. I had him last quarter and he totally ridded the topic of anything interesting. He occasionally punctuated his uninteresting lectures with lame jokes. I was looking forward to taking genetics but now I'm bummed I wasted this class on Hillers. He sucks, and I wich I would have taken it with someone else. He IS the slowest test grader too.

The class overall was an easy class. The tests were not difficult, and as long as you showed up to lecture and were half way paying attention you would be fine. He would repeat some concepts 3 or 4 times different ways which isnt really a negative but annoying nonetheless. This class should be an easy A, and if you do the practice problems you should succeed. The course did get significantly more difficult halfway through when you get into molecular genetics, but again, practice problems and just show up to class and possibly actually study for those tests. The book is really not required because he does not follow it, he also posts maybe 10 lecture slides in ppt but doesnt actually really follow it.

Dr. Hillers was a pretty decent teacher. The first half of the class was really chill, interesting and the tests were easy. Then the second half came and he randomly decided to make the third midterm worth way more... which screwed up a lot of people's grades, but the final was pretty easy. really straight forward. if you stay on top of the reading and go to class and pay attention it's not too hard. He's pretty funny and cute in a nerdy professor kind of way. :)

I don\'t know what class everyone else was taking but Dr. Hillers is by far one of the best teachers I\'ve had at Poly. I\'ve taken a number of his classes, and would recommend him for anyone who needs this class. He knows the subject matter, and he does let you know what he wants for the tests if you pay attention during class. He\'s a pretty laid back kind of guy and really approachable so don\'t be afraid to ask questions! If you do the reading and keep up with the recommended HW problems (don\'t need to be turned in), you should be fine. I will agree that he is a pretty slow grader, but in his defense some of assignments in his other classes are pretty time consuming.

Professor Hillers was a great lecturer for BIO 351. He made learning genetics very simple and enjoyable. He used a combination of PowerPoint slides and diagramming on the board, which was quite helpful. He also has a great sense of humor. Definitely take Professor Hillers if you want no nonsense for BIO 351.

Hillers is a fantastic professor for BIO 351. He makes the lecture material very interesting, and his tests are pretty straight-forward and cohesive. He's very understanding and fair with grading too, and will curve decently at the end of the quarter. Take him if you get the chance!

I absolutely adore Hillers. As a bio major going into Anatomy and Physiology I was NOT looking forward to this class. Molecular bio isn't my thing. But Hillers made me enjoy almost every day of it. His dry sarcastic humor was just what a course as awful as genetics needed. And I can honestly say, despite the way I struggled with the material, Hillers is now my favorite teacher at Cal Poly. He is a boss. And I highly recommend taking him and risk having a harder quarter with than taking Himelblau for an easy quarter and missing out on what a boss this man is.

Other evals listed here pretty much get it right. Hillers is a rather tiresome prof. His lectures are dry and he takes a really interesting subject and makes it seem boring. Some students like him for his wit, but he's really doing a disservice by teaching only the basics, as it seems that Hillers doesn't keep current in the field. Unfortunately all BIO majors have to take this course, but you aren't served well if you take the course from Hillers. He makes it an easy class, but don't expect to learn anything current in genetics.

I think his sarcasm/humor is something that more science professors need. It's all about being down to earth and not pretending he knows everything, because, hey, genetics is crazy shit. Very relatable. This personality makes learning the stuff much more approachable imho (also definitely makes the 2 hour lecture reasonable)... That being said, I think he's a super freakin smart guy. Tests were pretty dang straight forward with maybe one question at the end that asked you to go beyond a problem right out of lecture. I'm taking mol bio now and am honestly super happy I had Hillers for genetics before.
