Math has never been one of my favorite classes to go to. My high school math teachers were incredibly dull and seemed to enjoy throwing as many equations and formulas as possible at the class in a given day. After having teachers like this for so long, I obviously expected something similar at Cal Poly. I

Awesome professor. I have never really liked math but I have always been good at it. That was until calculus and mendes. First time I have ever had fun struggling in a class. Tony answers every dumb question like it is deep and meaning ful. His tests are really hard but they make u learn the material. He also gives most everyone a loving grade boost at the end of the class because he knows he is tough. He is also hilarious in class! Everyone needs to have mendes at least once in there life at cal poly!

Dr. Mendes, Tony, Professor Mendes, Your Highness, Stud, whatever you call him (as long as it's on his Acceptable list of names), is a positively wonderful professor. He's extremely enthusiastic about differential calculus, funny, and manages to make even such a boring class fun to sit in, simply by virtue of his presence. He is probably the most intense teacher on campus; make sure you watch his face when a cell phone goes off in class. His penalty for having a phone go off in class is the best and most original idea I've ever heard of for dealing with such an issue (you have to bring cookies or brownies for everyone the next class period). The homework load is reasonable, and everyone knows that graded homework in a conceptually difficult class is a good thing. He gives you an assignment a day except on test days (he will give you three midterms), and if you are slow like me you will take a long time to complete the homework. He gives you three midterms and a final, which are challenging, but he tells you precisely what concepts he is going to test you on and will do example problems similar to those that will be on the test the day before he gives it. Make certain you know those review problems inside and out as knowledge of them will let you conquer each test with aplomb. As for being able to recognize and address student difficulties, he is an expert. I took this course in high school last year and had a great teacher, and after hearing the same concepts taught by Mendes, I understood things I had completely missed the year before. Dr. Anthony Mendes is an excellent professor all-around. I am taking him this quarter for Math 142 and plan to take him again the next. You should too.

Mendes has G status as far as im concerned...I think he said he used to be a professional surfer...hes a great teacher with a good sense of humor, and he prepares you for each test. He also drops your lowest midterm grade (out of 3) for 141.

This man is an amazing teacher and he is really cool in general. I had never taken a calculus class before and I feel that I have a firm grasp of the subject. He assigns homework that you have to turn in. Do it. It is simple to get done because he gives you a schedule of all the assignments you have to turn in for the entire quarter, so you can get everything finished at the beginning of the week. He gives three midterms and he drops one of those grades completely. His tests are very fair, and he reviews them in class (except the final of course). He also grades very fairly as well. His lectures are very clear and he organizes the class so you have plenty of time for questions on the homework and the new material. DON'T LET YOUR PHONE MAKE ANY SOUNDS IN CLASS! You have to bring in baked goods....and not stuff from the store. Just turn it on silent before you walk in the door. Dr. Mendes is very good at explaining difficult concepts. I would recommend taking any class with him.

Great instructor - very friendly, funny, and overall good at teaching. He really seems to enjoy the subject, and makes an effort to convey why it is relevant to real life, not just that class. His grades are composed as such: 10% homework, 60% tests (lowest score dropped), 30% final. As those numbers indicate, the class is especially good for intelligent slackers, who can ace the tests, but skip the homework. Even if you aren't very good at math, though, I'd recommend Mendes highly. Not from personal experience, but I have heard that he is really helpful when you need it.

Mendes is one of the funniest teachers ever, he makes coming to class fun! but Mendes is a great teacher. I have never taken calculus before so I thought I would fail but he teaches the class really well and explains the material great. He assigns homework every night but it helps you not fall behind. His tests can be a little hard but the day before his tests, he gives you 5 similar problems to review which are almost always the same as the 5 on the test. He also is very nice and helpful at office hours. I highly recommend Mendes.

He is deffently a pretty good teacher. I took a Calculus class in high school, not AP, but we covered calc 1 and most of calc 2. So a lot of this was a refresher for me. Basically I would listen for the beginning then do homework for the last half of class. His homework ins not that bad at all, its not a major undertaking each night. No webassign, all book and paper. In high school I never really understodd limit problems that well, but he taught limit most excellently, and now i understood them, no problem. The first exam (of four) was the hardest, i got a 14 out of 25 (I didnt study for any of my exams). The deffenitions deffently hur everybody (i got 1 out of 5) you have to book defenition pretty much. But there were no defenitions after that. I got around 90% on the other three finals. He drops the one you do worst on or skip or sleep through. So i had about a 90% going into the final. Studied a little bit. But i got a 35out of 50. the class average was 31.71/50 or 62% He does curve final grades, but only slightly. The curve doesnt do much for people at the top of the class, but it helps more for those looking for a C to pass. Homework is graded out of 10. 4pts if it look like u did it. 2 pts each for 3 random problems. i avgeraged about a 9.5. great teacher, i thought he was the greatest teacher until the final. (class avg of a 62%, please)

Anthony Mendes is an overall Excellent teacher! He assigns homework problems that relate well to his tests, and none of his tests are unreasonable. He doesn't just give you plug and chug problems; he couldn't care less about the algebra. He wants you to understand calculus, so he gives you problems you actually have to figure out. His curve is very generous too. Also, he DOESN'T make you memorize a bunch of pointless formulas.

Pretty good professor. You can tell he actually cares about his students grades. His office hours are actually really helpful and if you go to them a couple times he'll probably raise your final grade a little. Tests are pretty straight forward. Easy class to get an A or B if you do most of the homework and at least attempt to understand the material. He says some funny stuff in lecture and can make it somewhat interesting at times. I'd recommend him.

Before taking Dr. Mendes' class, I dreaded Calculus as I though I was just naturally bad at the subject; however Dr. Mendes, or Tony as he likes to be called, changed my opinion on this subject and has become my favorite teacher I have encountered throughout my entire academic life. He looks out for each and every one of his students and will go above and beyond what is expected from a college professor to ensure his student's success. He is extremely passionate about his work and this is evident in every lecture of his. His understanding of the material is top notch and he is able to communicate his lessons to his students very clearly. As a person, he is caring, compassionate, and has a great (albeit quirky at times) sense of humor. I would recommend Tony to any student looking for an outstanding math professor.

This guy is the man. Would always show up to lecture with a fat grin on his face, and bring up the most random stories about his family life. Presented the material extremely well while still keeping me awake and entertained. Group quizzes were once a week and pretty straight forward, but progressed in difficulty as the quarter went on. The first midterm was a joke but the second was a lil harder, and so was the final. Nothing bad if you look at your notes once in a while. Just do the homework. Or not. Up to you.. but don't disrespect Tony, he only deserves love.

Great teacher. Really laid back and fun, and explains concepts clearly. He makes an effort at teaching Calculus 2 concepts that are more useful in real-world applications, and not teaching the ones that aren't. As anyone who has seen the rest of the reviews knows, Professor Mendes is an excellent professor who clearly explains the material and incorporates humor into his lectures to make the class more involved and interested in the subject. I think that anyone who wants to learn Calculus effectively and enjoyably should definately enrol into Dr. Mendes's section. My only complaint is that he does have a tendency to put in a few tricky problems in his tests (even though he tells you "exactly" what is going to be on the next midterm), so study extensively before each exam.

Anthony Mendes is a great teacher overall and was a great professor. The only thing I would say that I thought wasn't good was the amount of partial credit given on midterms. Missing just one small thing and you lose 40% of the credit for the problem. Other than that spectacular teacher.

Tony was probably my favorite professor this quarter, and that says something because I'd rate all my professors a 4/4. He presents the material in a way that is very easy to understand, but is also VERY ready to clarify any misunderstandings. His tests are very fair, and you won't see anything intentionally trying to trip you up. If you put in the effort, you will learn the material with Tony, no matter how bad you may think you are at math.

Tony was easily my favorite professor this quarter, he's funny and very knowledgeable at the same time. He always very willing to help in class and during office hours. Some people found his jokes a little awkward/weird but you still laugh and at least he wasn't lecturing in a monotone. He presents Calc II in the simplest way possible for you, with very easy to follow lectures. His handwriting is phenomenal because he used to work at Disneyland, handwriting people's names on hats (ask him about it). The lecture is always easy to understand as is his Blue Book problems. However, the homework can be challenging but that's the point. Come in during office hours and he'll be glad to help you out. Midterms (there are 2) and the final are not as hard as the homework, closer to the sample problems he gives before the test and to the Blue Book problems. Quizzes are group quizzes meaning you work with a partner, and the class, and Tony on the problems; its awesome. Best professor so far, take him if you can!

Read on if you want something over than unbridled adulation... Mendes seems like a pretty good teacher in lecture. He tells nice little jokes and seems to present things clearly enough. This perspective completely changes once you get to his homework though. He completely abandoned using textbook problems. That isn't a problem in itself, but the worksheet of problems he gave us were ridiculously hard. I found one person in the engineering tutoring center who could usually help me solve his problems. Any students i spoke to who already took calc ii couldn't figure out the problems. Mendes says he wants you to "struggle" so you can learn. This seems absurd to me though. I've never "struggled" my through a difficult math problem after learning only the basics. I solved difficult math problems by practicing problems and concepts of an increasingly gradual difficulty. If you love math you'll probably like mendes. If you don't, i might look for another teacher. I worked my ass off and learned a lot and still got a terrible grade. Also, there were always a lot of people in his office hours, so it can be hard to talk to him.

best, coolest, funniest, clearest teacher I have ever had. I have always been ok at math but never really liked it but I loved going to calc 2 with mendes. He made math super simple and I loved going to office hours just to make sure i knew how to do everything because I knew nobody could explain things better than him. office hours were really awesome with him too because he is super funny and always happy. Tony is one of the best, most hilarious teachers I have ever had. First of all, he is extremely intelligent and understands the subject well. I had his 9am class, and going to his class was never a chore because he managed to make his lectures interesting and enjoyable because of his ridiculous/awesome jokes. If you ever had an issue with a problem or concept, he welcomed all questions and was very approachable after and during class. Also, you can always go to his office hours, but due to the large amount of kids who show up, it is difficult to get more than one or two questions answered. This isn't his fault, its just because there are so many students want his help and only one of him to go around. If you have the opportunity to take Tony, DO IT! With his random comments and crazy laughter, to his yelling "Get out of my face!" at a math problem, you definitely won't have any problem staying awake in his class. Tony presented the material in a clear and simple way, and also taught how we would be using this in the real world (for engineering and other math related careers). To begin, Mendes cares about his students. During lectures, he asks students if they are understanding the process, or have any questions, on the topic. His lectures are informative and he knows how to explain, he has humor. Mendes does not use the textbook for homework, but he recommends it for extra practice. He gives group quizzes which you are allowed to use notes, calculators, other groups, and himself to answer any clarification questions, or even just get HELP instead. I just took the first midterm and it was exactly like his home works and quizzes, as well as his practice midterms, HE just changes the equations. His office hours are very helpful, when I caught him by himself (it is usually packed with students), he gives you his whole attention, and cares how you learn, no matter what level. This is a huge plus for myself because I have had teachers that were not interested in me or my needs in the class, which lead me not to care as well, but Mendes gave me motivation. I would highly recommend taking Mendes, won't regret it. AND ASK QUESTIONS!!! Also, if you need more practice take the workshop if they offer it to the class.

He gives examples of how different students in the class will use the math he teaches in their future careers. He tells hilarious jokes that make the class fun, even jokes at his own expense. He explains topics in the simplest way possible and then builds from their. His tests are straight forward with a few brain teasers, but even if you get the hard questions wrong you still come out with a B. Tony Mendez! Where do I being. This guy knows what he is doing, he presents the material in a way we can understand. Then has us do problems that help us prepare for the midterms and final. He can identify problems that most students have and he also interacts in a way with the students that makes the class seem a little more interesting than a normal math class. The quizzes are open group, open notes, open professor, and open class. Study well for the exams and you'll do great! Wish more professors were like him!

He's an overall very helpful person. Highly recommend. His homework is due. His tests are hard but fair. One of the best teachers I've had at Cal Poly.

Tony is a great guy. Very receptive, very funny. He's a giant dork but he's lovable. Class was very straightforward and the tests were more than reasonable. But HE WILL SHAFT YOU ON THE FINAL. A girl started crying in the middle. We all expected the final to be as easy as the midterms, but it was not. He did teach us everything, but the problems were incredibly difficult. Don't go in expecting an easy final.

Dr. Mendes is great. MATH 242 is generally not a difficult class, and Mendes made it clear exactly what we needed to learn. He definitely cares about his students, and he is always willing to help explain concepts. About the review above mine, I disagree. The midterms and final were certainly all comparable, with no surprises on any of them. I was in the same class, and no one started crying during the final. Take Dr. Mendes.

Good guy, he presents the material pretty well and is very available for office hours. He makes tests VERY CHALLENGING and often does little tricky things to make sure you're paying attention, which can completely screw you if you don't notice them. Im my opinion he is way too nit picky on the little stuff like algebra, integration, etc. on tests. Linear Analysis is a tough class in general and on most problems, there are probably 50 ways you could mess up (matricies, eigenvalue/vectors, etc) so always be careful with every step when doing problems. Mendes is a math genious, and seems to think everyone else is as well. So if you are also a math genious, you'll probably love him. If you are just trying to get by and you don't fantasize about tangent lines and identity matricies, good luck, its going to be tough.

This guy is a beast! Tony is an amazing teacher, and he goes out of his way to make everyone comfortable with the material. The only small gripe I have are his test...he's a little picky sometimes, and I kind of got shafted out of points I deserved, but hey, he's still a great guy, and an amazing professor. Don't hesitate to sign up for him.

I'd give this man an A+ of it was an option. This man reaches PIMP STATUS in my book. I don't know how I ended up with a C but it was my fault, I did'nt study for the midterms. I went to all his office hours and he taught me 1-1, he is very good at understanding difficulties and making it easier for you. Definitely takes the time to teach you, so I was able to B-slap that final and got a C, I just wish I didn't mess the midterms. He is a teacher and a friend, and brownie rule is awesome. If someone's phone rang, they had to bring brownies. My phone rang twice, lol. He is interesting funny, a freaking genius, sometimes too smart and it gets complicated. But take him And I quote "MY WIFE IS A TOTAL M.I.L.F." -Dr Toni Mendes

Mendes is a good teacher when it comes to portraying the material clearly. However his grading is kind of fucked up. I got a 77 in the class but for some reason he would not give out plus or minus grades which fucks your GPA. Thats the only thing that bothered me about his class. I did pretty well on his tests and the nice thing is that you never have any quizzes. just two midterms and a final. The homework is graded pretty critically and i feel it hurts you in the end. its out of 9 points and the grader was told to take a point off for wrong answers which is bullshit because the answers in the book werent always right. He does take your final and replaces its score with any shitty midterm score you may have gotten. I would recommend him over many of the other math teachers at cal poly. He def cares about his students. O and dont let your phone go off or else youre baking cookies for the class, no store bought ones. homemade only...

He\'s cool, but he is also HARD. He makes you focus a lot on the theory behind problems and throws theory questions on the tests, so if you screw up there your test grade just dropped by a substantial margin. I think you have to work harder in his class than other Linear Analysis professors, but if you work hard, your grade should be OK.

Professor Mendes is such an awesome teacher. His teaching style is laid back and always makes sure the class knows the material as he is teaching. There are two midterms, which i have to admit are fair, some easy questions then a hard question, but they are manageable. You then have group quizzes which are basically work with everyone around you to get the answer. Homework was ten times harder than the actual midterms and final. But despite that if you don't take mendes then you are crazy, this guy is the best.

Mendes is awesome. He is hilarious but incredibly smart. His lectures are very well organized and combined with the blue book provide a solid foundation for the class. The homework was absolutely worthless as the tests were nothing like the problems assigned. Tony doesn't even teach the same methods as the book. Do his practice problems, the blue book stuff, and really try to understand the group quizes and you shouldn't have a problem. The only gripe I have is that the tests are only 25 points each and even the smallest math error will cost you a point, but the problems are very doable.

Mendes is one of the most reasonable professors I have had at Cal Poly. Tony will know your name within and week and actually cares about you. Tony had a pretty cool mustache and fashion taste. He presented the material decently well by going slow and requiring in-class problems to supplement his lecture. He made some decently funny dadish jokes and did random things during his lecture to make sure people didn't doze off or miss something. His exams are hard. Expect to get problems harder than other classes. He covers similar problems in class but there is always a twist. He does his best to prepare you but I'm not good at math and not giving me solutions to a study guide is quite irritating to someone who needs to cram before exams. You can go to office hours to get answers if you want ( I did this a few times). He does a lot of proofs and theory in his class so expect to actually know the topic. His homework is out of the book and took about a hour and half to do per week. Group quizzes are at the end of the week and they are difficult but he walks around and steers you in the right direction. Tony is great and you should take him if you get the chance.

Professor Mendes is a very interesting teacher. For one, he's a very young professor and can definitely be down to earth. Two, he's not an easy teacher at all -- in better words, expect to work hard in his classes. In Graph Theory (MATH 335), homework is worth 40%, two exams is worth 15% each, and final is worth 30%. The homework is worth 40% becuase you should be expected to spend many hours working on it. His homework expects you to "think" and work at it compare to other professors who give you a problem that you can solve in less than five minutes. Overall, I love his teaching style and his ability to help students during office hours. He is very good at teaching and knows what he is doing. However, you got to stop him once in a while if you need furthur clarification.

Mendes is one of the best math professors I've had at Poly. He has a true love of the material and really tries to spread this attitude to the students. The homework is HARD (there's a reason it's given a week and a half in advance), so don't procrastinate, because you WILL NOT get it the night before. But he's always willing to help you in office hours and is very flexible. Plus he's a super nice guy! 50% of our grade was the homework, 20% for the midterm, and 30% for the final. So yeah, homework is the biggie in this class. The only problem I had was with the book, which was a total waste of money. I don't think we used it once. Other than that, it was a great course and I'd recommend Mendes to anyone!!!

This is not the easy-A 336 you used to hear about. However, you will learn more in here than probably any other math class, and it is not hard to pass. Dr. Mendes is an excellent professor, probably one of the most knowledgable, and yet still down to earth, math professors I've had at Poly. If you start early and work hard on the homework you will do fine, also, he is very willing to give away the answers to homework problems if you ask the right questions. Also, don't worry if your grades seem bad, he is very fair and raises everyone's grades at the end. The only way to get lower than a C is to stop trying.

MY FAVORITE TEACHER AT CAL POLY. I am taking him for a year straight, at first I was thrown off because instead of lecturing he had us do the problems on the board everyday and maybe did 1-2 problems a week. I have never worked so hard at a class and learned the most in one quarter than I have here for 3 years. He is very approachable in office hours. He assigns homework, two midterms and a final. I was skeptical all quarter until I realized how much I truly missed his class. Now I have him for linear then number theory. If you go to his office hours he has insight and you might even learn things that will help you obtain a career later in life. He has a mean sense of humor, but all the students laugh. He does grade hard but he makes you work for it and deserve a grade. By far the best teacher I have ever had and inspires me everyday. He doesn't expect you to know everything, he expects you to struggle and genuinely wants to help and if you're sick or something he understands.

Tony is unlike any professor I've had at Cal Poly. First of all, he is incredibly smart in the subject. He knows so, so much about math, but he's never cocky or condescending about what he knows. He's passionate about what he teaches, and you can tell from the first day that he loves it. It's rare when a professor knows the material well, teaches it well, and loves doing it, and Tony excels with all three. Besides his teaching, he is incredibly hilarious. Even at 9:00am he couldn't go a lecture without getting us all to crack up, and I'm pretty sure he wasn't trying too hard as it was. His personality is just naturally very humorous, and he'll definitely make fun of you. He may ask you to pick your favorite prime number, then say you're favorite prime number is a different number so it works better with what he's saying, but then ask you again for your favorite prime number and choose your original number after you think you should pick the number he changed it to. In his mind, there is no such thing as a stupid question, and even when I tried I couldn't prove him wrong. He welcomes all ideas for problems and gives all students chances to explain their thoughts. A lot of the things we counted were extremely hard, and he understood. He took lots of time in class to really focus on certain things we weren't understanding, although the way he ran it in general was having different students discuss in groups problems from the homework on the board. He'd have a few groups write solutions down and then one person from each group would present that problem. This was great since it let us work with each other and get to know the rest of our classmates. When he stopped this pattern, it was usually to give his own teaching on whatever we weren't understanding, or to introduce each new idea or pattern. His homework was very manageable and usually most problems from the homework were what we had already spent time on in class. His quizzes are group quizzes, which is great because it gives us more opportunity to talk about the problems. The material in this class is in no way simple. Counting is incredibly difficult, and it's not something you can just teach yourself or learn overnight. It takes coming to class daily and really putting a ton of time and effort into it. If you do that, if you complete all homework thoroughly and pay attention in class and really try to understand the material, you'll be fine. His office hours are extremely helpful, and he always knows exactly what you can't seem to grasp. He is great at that. Lots of times his office hours turn into half the classroom, which is great because it's like having a second lecture hour sometimes where you can focus on specific things you're struggling with. He'll always make time for one-on-ones, though, and he really cares about all his students. He knows we have other classes, and he's reasonable in what he expects from us day to day. He gives us breaks and easier days and spends some time in class talking about other things besides math, like our weekends and our other classes and hilarious, random stories he'll bring in from out of nowhere. His two midterms are considerably challenging, but that's because this is a higher math class. Again, if you really put your all into it you can totally get an A. I didn't end up with that high of a grade because I struggle with tests and couldn't finish all of the problems in time, and I know I could have put in more time to understand more. You put in everything, you'll do great. Bottom line: the class is hard but Tony is amazing and if you make the effort, you will definitely succeed, and probably get teased along the way.

He was as vibrant as he was flamboyant- whether it be the fancy Disney cursive or the obnoxious laughter and jokes to keep the class awake. He doesn't seem fond of assigning homework problems out of the textbook, which makes you forced to go to office hours if you get stuck and it leaves you unable to check your answers otherwise. Normally, this wouldn't be a bad thing but his office was crowded more times than not. He purposely makes the group quizzes harder than the exams and "Blue Book" in-class problems were generally completed everyday. Highly recommended but take extreme precaution for the second midterm. It was, by far, the hardest exam that quarter. He also has a strange grading curve for the class which didn't work to my advantage in the end. Would have settled for a C+ or B-.

MATH 437 - Game Theory - that was some class! I have to say that I really enjoy having Professor Mendes as my professor. This is not proof-extensive as other 400-level class but there is a lot of memorization. You have to memorize approximately 15 algorithms that are extremely extensive including the Shapley-Snow Algorithm. Your grade consist of 60% as homework, 20% as your final, and 10% as your midterm. I am NOT kidding on the 60% becuase you will spend a lot of time doing your homework. The only criticism about Mendes is that he needs to spend time on concepts that is extremely difficult to comprehend which includes the "Maximizing and Minimizing" - he knows it means. Overall, Professor Mendes got my "A" for a very good teacher. Oh, tell him how much you soda -- you'll get a good reaction from him.

The homework is pretty challenging but the problems are usually customized and somewhat fun to work out. There are seven homework assignments, two midterms, and the final. I appreciate that homework gets weighted as either 25% or 50% of my grade, depending on which helps me more. If you're worried about the textbook, don't be. It's provided FREE online. His classes (I'm about to take my 3rd with him) are always entertaining and leave you feeling better at math then when you came out of them. This class in itself is not like a 'normal' math class, it almost delves into how we can model human and animal behavior with numbers based on optimizing rewards. Does that make sense? No, and he says claims himself that his class is bogus! BUT, it works and it's incredibly cool. If Tony teaches this class, it's an opportunity you MUST go after and is applicable and interesting to ALL majors. You can easily see connections to computer science, psychology, biology, and more.
