Julie is an amazing teacher. If i had any other teacher i know i would not have passed. She does a great job explaining the material, although at first her voice is very dry and monotone(careful if you have her in the mornings! made me sleepy) but you get usd to it. If you have any questions or dont know how to do anything dont be afraid to talk to her and tell her out front whats bothering you! She will go step by step until she knows you know the material! Go to her Office hours!!! she is extreamly helpful! grading wise she is fair. homework do it! its not only good practice but free points! the first miderm was longg and we told her thats how we felt about it and she made the second one shorter! The prjects are worth a lottt so make sure you diff them!! If your not sure how to diff ask her!! trust me when i say you can lose up to 20 point for not diffing a project!! Overall i would recomend her to anyone!! She is an amazing teacher!!

If you need to take CPE 101, take Julie Hatalsky. I had never done coding before and she made it so easy to understand. She grades fairly and exams are a little lengthy but fair.

Julie was an alright teacher. She didnt really know how to explain everything very clear. She is nice about the homework and labs. Her midterms are kinda long and at her office hours she is somewhat helpful. If you can take someone else for CSC/CPE 101 i defitnently recommend it. She really expects you to know C even if you have never programmed before.

She's a good teacher you just have to make sure you do the work. That's the only reason I got a C. Besides that I got A's on all the midterms and Finals.

She makes the class fun and interesting and she really knows her stuff, but she goes way too fast. If you passed CPE101 with a C or are struggling with programming, you should probably find someone else. She assumes everyone knows the stuff and doesn't stop to explain. She didn't offer good examples either and she always went over pieces of code instead of showing the whole picture. She is a lot of help when you go to office hours, but chances are you'll have to wait a while before she can get to you.

It's a decently fast class for beginners who just getting into java. As long as you do all the labs and some programs you should be just fine. Go to office hrs and bother her with programs and most of the she will tell u what to do when ur stuck. Class had 5 Lab Quizes every other week. 1 Midterm which should be fairly easy. And a common final which could be little hard. And ofcourse labs and programs. Overall, she's nice and decent.

Julie is the best CPE 101 professor hands down!!! if you can take her, do whatever necessary to be in her class. I have taken CPE101 twice including this last time with Julie and am very pleased with her way of TEACHING, not lecturing, and her availability to students. Her office hours are usually crowded with people so arrive early. She will also help you with programs and teaches you step by step.

Julie is an awesome instructor. She clearly has mastered the balance between being a friend and an instructor. Her lectures were clear and followed the published powerpoint slides from her website. She even went with the class for Woodstock's after the final.

The course material was fairly straightforward, I really saw nothing new in this course. I took Circuits, Assembly, and C at Cuesta before I came here so I saw nearly all the same material in this class. That, and I took Systems programming with Nico so I have a pretty good handle on C, pointers, buffering...blah blah. I think Hatalsky's greatest ability comes with avoiding the BS. Case and point, the first day. We went over the syllabus in not more than twenty minutes and were dismissed. Awesome! I cannot tell you how annoyed I get at professors that go through every detail of a syllabus as if we haven't seen it before. We can read damnit! I've been in school way longer than I should but I would think by the second year students would have a basic understanding of how to read a syllabus. Thank you Julie for being the one professor in my five or six years of schooling to believe in my ability to read a syllabus. That applies also to her teaching method. She doesn't dwell on the painfully obvious details of programming while ignoring the not so obvious details. I didn't notice the train wreck thing that person below was talking about. Not sure how a train wreck has anything to do with a monotone voice, but I think she did just fine. It's computer science, not debate, no inflection needed...just 1's and 0's.

Julie is really awesome. At first, this class seemed kind of intimidating, albeit im a CSC. So when we start talking about how memory operates in programming, i became a little nervous. But i shouldnt have been. Julie really helps you understand whats going on. Her lectures get straight to the point. She does take them from the publisher of the book, but she edits the stuff we dont need to know or already know. Im not gonna lie though...tests were difficult in my opinion. They weren't the hardest...just new material for someone thats been programming his whole life. But i learned a lot. No one else taught 225 at the time, but even if someone else did...i would still say take Hatalsky. She RULES!!!

Professor Hatalsky was so laid back, it was quite refreshing. I learned a ton in her class, and she made it an inviting subject. She loves this class, which always makes it more fun to learn. I didn't have any other options for professors, but if you're debating between professors, take Hatalsky!! She's awesome.

She's the only option for 225, luckily she's not bad. The only problem I have is with how boring her lectures are, they just seem to drag on and on. She shows no energy during lectures, even though she clearly has some, if you talk to her before or after lecture begins she's like completely different. Aside from that she's great at presenting the material, and if you ask for help she'll give you a lot of help. She was also nice enough to buy us all pizza. The class isn't really hard, and as long as you keep on top of things you should easily at least get a B. You will learn a lot about pointers in C as well...

excellent professor. class went at an easy pace and she took time to go step by step through examples. study guides given out before the midterms (2 total) and lecture slides are online. hw is assigned but not collected. just go to class, pay attention, and make sure you understand the labs. julie is very approachable and helpful. she wants her students to do well and always asks if the class has any questions

If you enjoy doing massive amounts of work for a 2 unit class than take this teacher. Shes nice and helps out but if you don't understand what computer programming is than its like learning another language in 10 weeks. Test were tough but nothing compared to the HUGE projects that are due and the final project. I personally think she is a dumb bitch and deffinetly chooses favorites who suck up to her, most lame teacher here.

Julie is very nice and her homeworks and labs are easy, but the tests were hard and the projects were time consuming. However, if you get stuck on your projects, she is very helpful. Overall, I thought Julie was a decent professor.

Professor Hatalsky is a great teacher. The subject matter is definitely not the easiest, so the first few lectures for our class were overwhelming. She soon adjusted the lectures so that all of us could better understand. The projects are very involved, but the end results are something to be proud of. The tests are hard and long, but she curves the scores, which can help a lot. She is very helpful during office hours and through email, so contacting her about any problems is the best way of succeeding in this class.

During lecture, Ms. Hatalsky has THE most monotone voice ever! I thought I was watching an SNL skit or something because the dullness was just that exaggerated. The projects seem pretty overwhelming and I got confused on the later ones. The beginning of the class is cake, but it picks up from there. When talking with Ms. Hatalsky in office hours or for help in the lab she's very helpful and willing to give support. She's actually a pretty cool person once you get to know her but the monotone lectures always had me tense, as if I shouldn't be watching the trainwreck of a performance going on. I'd take her again for the class though.

This teacher is probably the only reason I could have even come close to passing this class. And I didn't just pass, I got an A-! I'm not much of a computer person but this teacher is awesome. She'll put in extra office hours before tests and projects to help out. The tests are sort of hard... the projects seem overwhelming at first but if you go in during office hours, she helps a lot. The material starts out really easy and then when you get to loops, it gets a lot harder... but totally do-able. It's the type of material that at first is confusing and then it clicks and you can't remember how you didn't understand it before. I do have to warn you though, the workload is kind of heavy for a 3 unit class. But if you're going to take the class, take this teacher. She's super cool and talks about drinking haha.

If you need this class, take Julie. She is knowledgeable and friendly. Others have posted here that she is boring and sort of drones, and she is aware of those concerns, but I didn't find that to be the case at all. She is extremely available in office hours if you need help and also very responsive via email to any questions or requests for help. The tests are tough, but she grades very fairly and gives ample opportunity for extra credit on exams and through projects.

a very knowledgable instructor. She definitely knows her way around C. There are 3 projects, which increase in difficulty. If you do the homework, you get full credit, which is nice. While there were a few subjects that I felt could have been covered more completely, this course tries to cram 10 lb of crap into a 5 lb bag. This was my first shot at programming, so I immagine it would be much easier if you have some experience.

Julie is a good teacher if you don't know much about C and want and need the extra help. She's very nice and concerned about her students' understanding of C, and makes it very easy to get a hold of her for questions and help. Her exams were specific and a little bit difficult, but fair, considering the material. I recommend taking her instead of Hutch.

Fantastic teacher for anyone with experience with computers. Even for those who aren't that experienced, you'll be okay because Julie will always be available for help and really breaks things down into simple tidbits. Projects are fun and really applicable to course material that you learn instead of lame ATM machines and interest calculators.

So in this class (Systems Programming for Software Engineers) we spent a week or so on hardware, a couple weeks on machine code and assembly, and the last half of the quarter on C. I think the general consensus is that this class was a breeze. My only complaint is that we spent too much time covering the basics of c (which I already knew) and not enough time on things like unix systems calls which are needed for other classes, like operating systems. I can't say that I really learned much in the class, but at least it was mostly easy and painless.
