I took this class with art chapman and jim bagnall, and i would have to say that it was horrible. The title of this class was Architectural design 253, and there was absolutely no design in this class. All Art cares about is pleasing the client and if your presentation has CHOBU(which is a very superficial way of looking at architecture). There are no design crits and very low expectations. neither art or jim have had practical experience in architecture, and it shows. I don't think I took away any beneficial advice from Art because he really does not know what he is talking about(thats why he always needs another teacher to babysit him). The only good part about this class is that jim gives some good advice on sketching and I got better at it. I highly do not recommend taking this class if you are serious about architecture, but if you want to take the easy BS road, these guys are perfect for you. However, if you do get stuck with them with bad priority(as I did), you can turn out decent projects if you work independently.

Art is a genius. He teaches the masters class, CAD, AND 2nd year design! He has a lot of insight on design and expects students to see that insight too. I started off the class getting C's on projects, but improved through out the quarter. Like the person said below, he doesn't always answer your questions. He will say "I don't know, what do YOU think." I THINK that's one of the greatest skills I learned from Art, to think for myself. Definately take Art.

Art is a funny guy. He is also an easy grader and sets realistic deadlines (which he is strict on). I recommend taking Art especially if it is a combined class with Howard Weisenthal or Jim Bagnall. "The big lab" is fun because you get to see a lot of student work and get critiqued by multiple instructors (warning: sometimes they contradict each other).

CHOBU is the only useful thing you will learn in his class. Prepare to be frustrated with the contradictions if you take him with Howard. Howie is actually the star of the show. Art does not actually teach much. Perhaps that is why he has some other professor in the room at the same time. He takes forever to do desk crits and do not expect him to help much. If you work hard and make things that look good you will get a good grade in the end, if you impress him at the exit interview.

My experience with Chapman was relatively negative. He co-taught the class with Howard Weisenthal and I strongly felt as though Chapman was Howard's sidekick rather than a full-fledged professor. When Chapman did give his imput, it often contradicted Weisenthal's completely. This made the class very frustrating. His grading scale was also very unclear and/or unfair. My final grade was lower than the mid-term grades I received and I felt as though my work was much stronger in the end of the quarter than the beginning. How does that work?

Chapman has no idea what he is doing, he gets an idea one day and he just gives that idea to every student he talks to and then the next day he has a completely new idea. His crits didn't help me at all. If you were to take howie or chapman i would definately go for howie, he knows his stuff and he might be harder on you but you will learn so much more from him. chapman just makes funny noises and stands in the corner listening to howie

Art is a great instructor and he makes class fun. He doesn't always answer your questions like you want him to and a lot of times he gives vague answers, but that makes you figure out a solution yourself. Be prepared he expects CHOBU in everything you do.

chapman is basically the comic relief sidekick to weisenthal, but he's not so bad he's not worth taking. i've never understood why weisenthal fills up so fast when it comes to registration time when chapman is always towards the end.. if you can get in to chapman, you can basically pretend that weisenthal is your teacher and get a bit more out of it. i always asked weisenthal for input on projects, and when chapman would talk to me i'd just smile and nod. it seemed to work. just make sure you do your "sketch of the day" even if they make you want to gag, and pretend to listen when he offers his um, "animated" advice about CHOBU. i did feel slightly disappointed this quarter because there is NO peer crits - something i really enjoy and learn a lot from. unlike some (younger?) teachers, they don't really seem as interested in forming a more personal relationship with the class. they are "old school," and if that's your cup of tea you should enjoy it. if not, (like me), just smile and nod and wait for next quarter. just don't take donna or something instead.

Art is a really good guy who cares about his students. He and Weisenthal teach design the way they learned it- lots of drawing, a lot of work, and basic building block stuff for design. I learned a lot but worked my butt off big time. Take Chapman... they play this good cop bad cop thing and Chapman is the good cop. He won't rip your project in half like weisenthal does.

It\'s pretty hard to know where to start. Arthur wanders around class but rarely gives critiques. When he does, one is often left wondering what just happened. Chapman\'s reviews never end with any thought or direction. He simply tells you it is wrong, but doesn\'t help you improve it. As a student, I was pretty confused as to what Arthur did know about architecture. Sad to see that tenure has carried him so far.

Art is a great professor for second year there is quite a bit of design thrown at you. Sure he can be frustrating at times but its usually because you don't want to hear what he is saying. And yes he and weisenthal do contradict each other but that helps because they can give two different solutions to the same problem. Yes both wouldn't do well teaching the class separately but that is why they teach it together. If it helps at All I took them fall and spring quarter and enjoyed both quarters.

Art is a very great teacher. He presents information clearly and really cares whether or not the students are understanding the lecture. Plus the class wasn't boring at all. Art has a unique ability to teach and do stand-up comedy at the same time.

This is the only class that offers an introduction to AutoCAD and Revit, but if you have used either of these programs before, I'm sure you won't learn a lot of new stuff. He delivers the very basics. During the class he basically walks you through his assignments (pretty boring). There is one midterm that covers CAD and one final that covers Revit. It is weird to take a written test about computer programs. Be sure you know how to execute commands and be able to explain functions of certain tools.
