This class was alright. I think it is required for all IT students to take, so there is no getting around it. As a intro to Quality Assurance, we didnt really learn that much. Doesnt really prepare you for Barbers class (403). We did get to take a trip to NUMMI and watch cars get made which was pretty awesome. When he says participation points, he means it and that will screw your grade at the end, so suck up, its worth it with him. Grade is made up of quizzes and group projects. He grades the quizzes hard, so study. Projects are very time involved, but everyone does well on them. Hes a smart nice guy.

I'm really not sure why professor Olsen gets such a bad wrap here. Although I have not received my grade yet (A for the time being), I have found the Lean Six class to be quite interesting. This was an experimental quarter for Olsen where he allowed all students (about 40 in his one 2-hour block) to OPTIONALLY go to class. I didn't go once since the first week. I got to go at my own pace, watch the guest speakers (even live and interact if I wanted), and get help from friends when needed. The Lean Six class really gets you on track to thinking about process efficiency and improvement. We do a "Green Belt" class, but this in no way is close to certification.

If you're interested in learning about Lean Six Sigma, go buy any general intro Lean book and read it. They sell you this tool called Moresteam claiming "its the number 1 Lean tool.. its great..blah blah blah". Here's the reality, it costs like $2000 bucks but he gives you a "magical" discount to make it only $300! Wow what a deal amirite? Lol. What a joke. I cant believe I paid 300 for that intro level garbage you could anywhere on the internet. This means that the only point of registering and paying for this class is to get a discount code for another course. You might be asking, what does Prof Olsen do then? Well, nothing. He literally does nothing except meaningless lectures covering bits of the material. You learn everything on your own and do the examples on your own. In conclusion, if you're specifically going into LEAN, this class provides good resources, but dont expect the prof to teach you unless you have questions (I mean what do we pay him for anyways?). If you're simply interested in LEAN concepts and dont expect to put together LEAN process documentation, just go buy an intro to LEAN book and you will learn all the same general concepts for any DMAIC (Define Measure Analyze Improve Control) process.

Professor Olsen's class was honestly a waste of time. He has one section that's in class and one that's online, and the online class just streams the live class as it's happening. Tons of technical difficulties, and the actual class time is not useful at all. Tuesday's are spent watching a movie, and Thursday's classes are spent interviewing someone in industry, and this isn't any of the information you're really tested on (besides biweekly quizzes which total to 10% of your grade). The majority of the learning is from these online lessons you go through that technically are supposed to take like 11 hours each week, but you can go through it super fast and just google the quiz questions based on it. And the final is online so you really don't have to learn anything. I'll probably end up with a high B or a low A.

Okay. So. Olsen. A man I'm not the biggest fan of. People say this class is easy and everything is on quizlet but in reality it's not. And if you can't find something on quizlet, you're fucked because you haven't been trying in this class because everyone said it was a joke and you'd be fine. Everything is a lie. Don't take this class unless it's for your major. It ain't hard if you can find shit online but if ya can't. You're done. Due dates are BS. Sunday night, sure. But all of a sudden they won't tell you about anything and Olsen is like, this is what you should do for this assignment BUT HE WILL TELL YOU AFTER IT'S DUE. Like, bitch, COME ON. Also, you have a project due thanksgiving break. Happy break with the family? NOPE. Prof doesn't grade shit. His TAs do everything for him. I wonder what he does all day tbh since he always unloads all his work on the TAs. You know what else is annoying? HIS VOICE. ALSO DON'T FORGET ABOUT YOUR LEAN JOURNEY. AND HEWLETT PACKARD.

If you're an IT major, you have no choice, you're stuck with him (and the small group of IT professors). He's a nice person, but oh my goodness he can go off on so many tangents. He will take 20 mins to say something that could be said in 2 mins. Basically, all he does is lecture and his TAs grade everything. You gotta spend like $300 on a program, so that's fun. You have to do a mini project and it's kind of whatever, they don't grade you terribly hard. Have fun on your lean journey, green belters.

This class isn't that hard; if you blow it off and put zero work in, you'll probably get a B. Half of the class was online, but I think those in the physical section could connect electronically too. I don't know why anyone would show up to the lecture and listen to Olsen drone on about Lean Journeys - or worse, listen to a guest speaker drone on about the importance of LSS - for an hour. I've come to believe a fundamental tenet of LSS is the inability to explain any concept (written or oral) in under 20 minutes. The vast majority of the actual classwork was offloaded to an online service called MoreSteam that costs $300 (after your "magic" discount) and has many, many, many (many!) pages of complete garbage that hide maybe 50 useful notes. EngineRoom is actually pretty useful though, so check it out. MoreSteam also administers your final, which is a total pain in the ass and worth 40% of your grade. The project (25% of grade) isn't too bad, since the TAs grade it and it doesn't take too long (I did the entire thing in one kind-of-awful afternoon). Overall, this class is useful to have on your resume if you're going into manufacturing, but other than that it's not worth your time.

This class is literally so easy its almost a crime. I forgot to do a lot of the assignments and even missed a quiz and I got an A-. Everyone has test banks for the final (40% of the class grade), I didn't know about the test banks until the last week and it sucked so be sure to ask around and get those. The actual material is not that interesting, to me it seems like a class about how to use common sense but an A is an A. Also its expensive so prepare for that.

Not too hard of a class, hopefully end up with a B. Lectures are pointless and Moresteam takes forever.

This course had pros and cons. The actual course material is all online. The online quizzes are easy enough: you get 2 tries to answer a question on that topic and you can go back and read the section before you use the second try. The lecture quizzes are pretty easy, but a lot of times you had to watch extra videos on PolyLearn that he didn't show in class. There's a chunk of in class participation grades, which are basically completion credit type stuff. The individual Mini Project is easy enough to procrastinate on and still do well (though it's gonna be a hellish week if you do put it off). The final exam only covers the online material, and it'd be rough if you try to take it alone. I'd recommend taking it with a group. Basically, the online material is the stuff that's actually useful to learn. Anything that Olsen says in class is absolutely useless to the rest of your life, and if you can avoid going, I would. From listening to him, I'm convinced that he doesn't actually know anything about his subject except certain key phrases that he repeats over and over again but doesn't know the meaning of. This course would be better off if it was solely the online material. Also, his TAs aren't paid enough for all the work he has them do. It's ridiculous.

If you are looking to fulfill your ITP requirement, this is the class for you. You have the option of showing up to class or just live-streaming it, which most people do. All of the MoreSteam quiz answers are on quizlet and there are test banks for the practice test and the final. Olsen is absolutely useless and you don't have to listen to him, so you can just stream the class for your participation and do other stuff. He will not explain any of the assignments in an effective way so it's helpful to have access to old assignments from friends who have taken the class before. The mini-project supposedly takes the entire quarter to do, however, it probably takes all of eight hours to complete so don't stress about that too much. Overall, the class has potential to be useful but Olsen does not. Good luck on your lean journey.

Olsen is one of the worst professors i have ever had at poly. He is a nice guy and that is about it. He has absolutely no idea how to teach a class and he gives us hw assignments and just expects us to figure out how to do them without any guidance in class and very vague hw directions to begin with. I would avoid taking his class it would help save you a lot of frustration

ridiculously pompous on material. It's like look guy, half of us are in here just to graduate not to gain a career. Like one of those bible thumpers who PUSHES their lifestyle onto you. Copious amounts of HW, test that takes up the full 2 hours, take home final, sweet, but not worth the effort that goes into a class that most of everyone will reflect back on and wish they had those 4 hours of death each week back in their youth. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE

I cant even explain how terrible this guy is. He doesnt explain any of the homework, likely because he doesnt know how to do it himself. He is asked questions in class and can never answer them. He has to go back to his office and send out an answer hours later in an email. He sends out like 20 emails per week, none of which relate to anything anyone cares about. He cant teach, he cant explain questions, and he has no idea whats going on. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.

Professor Olsen was a horrible teacher. He didn't have the textbooks sent to the bookstore and waited until week 7 to tell us to order them online. He then assigned homework out of the textbook that half of us obviously couldn't do because we didn't have the book yet. He seemed very unprepared for each class, as if he was winging it every day. He just used the slides that came with the book and read them to us. He gave off the vibe that he didn't care about this class at all because it's an introductory course. He would never explain how to do the homework assignments, he would just assign them to us and let us figure it out on our own. After we turned in the homework he would go over it but he hardly knew how to solve the problems himself. He also docks you points if you don't pick up your graded homework in class. One day I wasn't aware that there was homework to pick up so I lost 3 points. He doesn't give a study guide, he plays a game called "what's on the exam" where students ask if somethings going to be on the test and he just says yes or no. If not a lot of people have questions about what is going to be on it, you're basically in the dark. Which is my situation right now as I study for the final exam.

Professor Olsen is an amazing professor. He knows what he's talking and is always available during office hours. He explains concepts clearly and makes it obvious what to expect on the quizzes. He's extremely knowledgeable on the subject and grades reasonably. Take him if you can.

Good subject matter to know if you want to get anywhere in the manufacturing field. Class can be a bit hard due to the ideas of Lean Thinking. But just study the key ideas and how to apply them, then you should do fine. The class can be hard calculating efficiencies and quality control, but take it with a grain of salt, form study groups, keep up on the reading, i don't see why you couldn't pass with a B or higher. I was just stuck with a crummy group for the group project, otherwise i would've had an A. All in all, not that bad. He's a good guy who is willing to help is students succeed and/or provide you with industry connections.

Olsen is a good guy, just not a great teacher AT ALL - he is very confusing and students call him out on not knowing his subject matter on several occasions. His tests are also very confusing, which causes an uproar within the class every time tests are handed back.... beware...

Dr. Olsen is a really really nice guy. He cares about his students. I did have difficulty with the in class material at times but if you meet him during office hours he explains things clearly. I can't help but like this guy. Meet with him one on one and you will be fine.

DR. Olsen is a great guy. His lectures aren't amazing, but the info is vital to real world success. He is more than willing to help you solve any difficulties you may have. Just lightly read the textbook before you go to class, take notes, participate, you'll get an A and have a much better time than just bitchin about the dry lectures. Your sucess depends on you, so don't be such a boner.

Olsen means well, but he just can't teach. His classes are the most boring things you have ever sat through. His activities and assignments are pointless, boring, and worthless. I have no idea why they hired this guy to teach upper division IT. The guy can barely spell, and he has his Phd? My money is not being well spent on classes like these.

Dr. Olsen is great. He cares about how you feel about the course and what you are getting from it. The project was a bit lame, but all the lecture material was presented in a clear way. The tests are very fair if you study.

This class was a complete waste of time. No new material was covered that had not been covered in other classes. Most of the material was out of date and most course material was a rip off from an RIT instructor's course from 2000. We ended up finishing part of the instructors research for his Ph.D which didn't even relate to the course description. Mr. Olsen needs to take a look at the course description and consult the intsructors that taught this couse previously. Then maybe students would pay attention in class instead of doing crossword puzzles to kill the time or simply not going to class or taking off early.

Mr. Olsen would be a great MBA professor in theoretical approaches to business. Most questions were only answered using the book with little real-world buisness approaches. The case studies were to old with business proactices changing all the time. Grading was very subjective and did not fall in line with the IT hands on approach which is what is expected in the business world. It seamed class would be strectched to ensure we stayed the whole time even though it could end early since everything was covered.

Professor Olsen is "teaching" lean principles; however, this was the least lean class I have ever taken. We pay a ton of money to be in the MBA program and this was by far one of the biggest wastes of time and money. Unfortunately, you can't avoid this class...get ready to hate life your final quarter at Cal Poly. Professor Olsen -- why not try to add real value to your customer...the student?!
