The class HNRS 100 is kind of a joke. We went in for an hour, listened to a speaker, did 10 hours of service over the quarter, and wrote a paper. I don't even recall if I said a single word to the instructor. Thus, it is hard to grade his performance appropriately. If you're taking this class, have no fear of Trice. You hardly get to know him anyways.

I didn't really see much or Trice during HNRS 100, we were each put into a group led by a TA and stayed in that group most of the class. As for the class, it's busy work and very repetitive, we spent ten weeks learning about sustainability. I wouldve dropped the class if it wasn't required.

The HNRS 100 is an orientation class, but it's not an intro class that tells you about the resources of the honors program. It should be that way because I know nothing about honors. Instead, it's a stupid discussion about sustainability once a week. It's really an english class because you have to read 3-10 articles (some can be 20 pages) and write a 1-2 page essay about it weekly; a waste of time. It's too much work for just Credit/No Credit. Unfortunately, it's required by honors program. It's really easy and you can BS your essays if you want (which i did half the time). Just suck it up and go it literally takes like 10-20 minutes a week. Even though I hated it, lots of people liked it alot so go into the class open-minded.

I don't know much about him as a teacher. For HNRS 100, he doesn't talk much. When he does, though, he'll stand out in a crowd. He speaks loudly and clearly, stays on topic very well, and puts in a lot of work to keep up with his students.

We have to write useless papers every week that our TAs don't even read...and then Trice walks around the room and argues with students. One class he came over to our group and he totally targeted me...and everything I said he made me feel terrible with personal attacks. If you aren't insanely liberal (I'm liberal but not extremely so) then he makes you feel like a soul-less person who doesn't care about the world. I feel so uncomfortable and even afterwards my TA asked me if I was okay cause he "went after me a bit". Honors kids sorry that this is your intro to the program - its really not as bad as this class makes it seem

GREAT PROFESSOR. He is the cutest little man I have ever seen and is super nice. He is very helpful, dedicated, and passionate about his work and courses. I would highly recommend taking his class.

This guy looks like an alien. There is way too much work for this class to be two units, there are 10 essays and a group project. Sucks to be you if you are in the honors program because you have to take this ridiculous class. Just lie on the microthemes and say you care about sustainability and you will get a good grade.

I took Dr. Trice's history class during the Cal Poly at Sea South Pacific Trip. He was an amazing professor. Hands down one of the best I've had at Cal Poly. He adjusted his class to teach us about the histories of the places that we visited while on the cruise. Not only was he a great professor in class, but he was awesome in port too. He hung out with the students and was equally as adventurous as us, even going to the trouble to help set up fun trips for us in the different ports we visited. Overall a great professor and a great guy. I hope he continues to participate in the Cal Poly at Sea program and if you have the opportunity you should definately participate in this program as well and take a Trice class.

Trice is AWESOME. The class is a ton of reading, but you just come to class and have a discussion about it. Overall a really cool class. TAKE TRICE!

I honestly really loved this class and Dr. Trice! He is a very interesting guy who facilitated a lot of discussions and made you feel very comfortable talking in class. This class is reading based but the readings are interesting and the books are not expensive! As long as you keep up with your log, you'll be fine. I loved this class and it was one of my favorites that I've taken at Cal Poly. He is very straightforward about what you have to do and as long as you try, he will acknowledge that. I learned a lot about social movements and things that are relevant to me as a student who likes to get involved.

Dude. I love this man. Such a legit class, two microthemes (1-2 page long mini essays) due a week. And most of them are optional, so you only have to do 10/18 microthemes for the whole quarter. Class is also based on discussion, so if you turn in microthemes, come to class, and contribute to the conversations, you'll get a solid grade. Not to mention, Trice is also knowledgable/chill as shit.

The class is really straightforward with some short essays which are really easy. Tom is really nice and isn't harsh on grading. I would definitely recommend this class as a GE because compared to other GE's, this is heaven. Take Trice.

Dr. Trice is one of my favorite professors at Cal Poly. He is engaging and presents the course material in an entirely new way. As a science-based student, I was not looking forward to taking a history General Education course, but Trice really brought it to life. I would, and do, highly recommend his course to anyone. There are no midterms in the course, just participation and 10 short papers. As long as you talk in class, put in effort, and show him you care you will do well.

You can tell Professor Trice is very knowledgeable about the subject. Every class we would go into depth the subject matter. He passes out an article per group or pair and we have to present it at the end of class. No final or midterm! Just a final project about one of the social movements today. 6 essays throughout the quarter-- at your choice. So you can choose when you want to do your essays on whichever subject matter we have planned for the quarter. Considering classes are always pair/group presentations and we don't have a midterm or final, the essays and final project aren't that bad. Not very good at communicating through emails though. Overall would definitely recommend!

A student should feel privileged to have the opportunity to learn from this professor. Very passionate for what is taught. Honors 216 (Comparative Social Movements) as a class required a lot of online reading the notion of no midterms or final made the reading load less intense. Highly recommended course and professor.

I had Trice for HNRS 100 so I kind of knew what to expect. He walked in the first day and said \"Okay, I don\'t believe in lectures or exams, so we will have none.\" Grade comprised of 8 microthemes (very short essays, 17 were offered but you only have to do 8 or he takes your highest 8 grades), participation (20%!), volunteer hours, an essay about your volunteer experience and a journal. There was A LOT of reading for each day of class, but it\'s manageable. I hated it at first, but the farther along we got, the more interesting the readings are. Class is just discussions. It\'s a great class and Trice is brilliant. He wants you to think through the topics rather than regurgitate information about them. He\'s an awesome professor. Take this class for your D3 and an honors credit- it\'s worth it.

I like professor Trice; he teaches well and is a reasonably tough grader. I have had him before and I like his teaching style. Unfortunately, he got stuck teaching the godforsaken topic of Comparative Social Movements. But he does not seem to notice how unimportant the course material really is. Over the course of this class, I spent about three hours per week writing about topics such as anti-colonalism and zionism. And honestly, I could not learn a single useful thing despite all those hours. One of few entertaining parts is that Trice always seemed to pick up more from my papers than I really put down. Oh well.

Dr. Trice is an excellent professor and he connects well with his students. He is always willing to help his students. Since it is a research and writing class there is a lot of work. Dr. Trice will challenge you, but it is for you benefit in the end. Take Dr. Trice. He even learns your name within the first day or two.

Awesome professor take him if you can. This class is a seminar class, so you only go to class half the time. The other time you discuss your topic and paper with Trice. He's very open to ideas and is easy to talk to you and makes you feel comfortable. Take him if possible.

Trice is a great prof...i thought i knew pretty much knew how to write a historical paper, but i learned so much from this class..he is pretty tough on grading, but only makes the term paper you have to write better in the end. If your serious about learning how to write a good historical paper take trice!! Great with office hours too.

Dr. Trice is one of the best professors I've had at Cal Poly. The whole class is based on writing a research paper and you get to work on it step by step. He's great at helping students out and the class is very casual. You get into a circle and just disucss the readings. Office hours helped a lot and pretty much find a topic that you're interested in and the class will be fine.

Professor Trice is an awesome teacher. He allows his students to be creative as possible when it comes to writing the research paper. You will learn how to cite sources properly, research effectively, and argue a thesis correctly. He makes it difficult to procrastinate on your paper, and is always willing to help.

Professor Trice is awesome both as an individual and a professor. He is a very interesting man who takes the time to learn his student's names and cares about their engagement in the class. Hist 317, the Lure of the Sea, was an interesting and fun class. There were absolutely no quizzes or tests. 30% of the grade was participation, so you have to go to class and talk. Each lecture period we divided up into our group for the quarter and discussed primary sources in light of the secondary sources we had to read online. There were 3 written assignments, which can be made very interesting depending on the topic you choose. The course requires a lot of reading (secondary articles are supposed to be read before each class and a book is read for a critical book review). All of the assignments were due before the end of the quarter, so after dead week there was nothing that needed to be done for the class! I would definitely recommend this professor and this GE to anyone.

Seriously my favorite class I’ve ever taken at cal poly. He makes the class become close and remember everyone’s names, and you become friends with the people around you as you do a lot of group work every class. I actually enjoyed coming to this class and never skipped even when you really don’t have to go to each since there are no tests and only 3 essays on topics of your choosing. Dopest class I’ve taken and I will miss it and the people in it so much Also trice is just a cool dude

I took Tom Trice's Russian history and it was very poorly taught. Firstly he required 5 papers for the course, but he barely read any of them and comments were very weak. That was not the main problem though. He failed to give blue book exams and based his grades entirely on these papers which is quite simply unfair. He had absolutely no way of knowing if his pet student in the front row Susie was actually doing the work and writing those papers or if her boyfriend or another was the author. Having assisted students at many times during my career, it was common for even me to write papers for some people who were struggling, or even just to make a buck. I wrote papers in all areas. He made several off handed comments during the class as well. One in particular was highly irksome to me personally. At the time it was clear I was working full time in construction. He made the comment in open class that “he did not know how to work with his hands, and that some people were better suited to labor than academics.” I had made the Dean’s list at Cal Poly 4 times straight finishing my undergrad, including 18 units at 4.0. I got a B- in trice because he failed to give us a blue book test and was not good at teaching period. Further I can find very little in print by Trice. If you are good you produce. You don’t just teach abroad all the time and take grant money that could go to an actual productive professor. If you do research abroad that is quite different. I see no indications of this. Yet another quasi-academic to be avoided at all cost because he puts absolutely no effort at all into his class and has hidden agendas. A student was reading an itroductory Marx book for instance just prior to class that was required for 510. He stated to the girl “what’s that garbage you are reading?”

Trice is awesome professor that truly cares about his students and even learns his students names. The only reason I got a C is because I hate Russian history. But he is willing to help his students to best of his ability. There are two midterms and two papers. Just take good notes and read the books for the essays very thoroughly and you should do fine. Take Trice whenever you can.

Thomas Trice is the most sassy and brilliant person I have ever met. Don't let him get to know you too well, or he will make fun of you in front of all of your friends. He taught me everything I know about history, research, and sarcasm. He's seriously effing brilliant. Take him, now! Turn your work in on time or you will be doomed. DOOOOOOOMED.
