claudia royal is an extremely lousy lay. After dragging your silly ass into some secluded spot, she realized you have a sack between your legs and I know that she secretly wants you to be a woman or atleast less than 17 years of age so that her lust for pornography can be photographed and placed into the universe. Poor bitch

This lady can be pretty annoying, but has some really funny stories at times. Overall kinda annoying, but okay. Her handwriting is impossible to read, and i found it hard to pin down what she liked in a paper. Her class wasnt extremely hard but it took some effort.

I remember being really excited for this class. English was always my favorite subject and I don't really have any problems with writing essays. However this class easily became my least favorite. Doctor Coleman has weird ideas about what constitutes a good essay. She will mark you off if you use too many "weak" verbs (any form of "being" or "have"). I never knew what I was going to get on assignment (I got D's, C's, B's, and A's) She gives terrible examples of "good" writing and basically presents writing and rhetoric in the most boring, textbook way possible. She is also extremely forgetful and her syllabus calendar is highly subject to change. On the plus side, she is somewhat lenient about due dates and is pretty nice person. She even brought in cookies a couple times. She also allows you to rewrite your essays, so there's no reason why you should get a poor grade. Go to her office hours because her written feedback on how to improve your essay is unhelpful.

She's a really friendly teacher, although it seemed at times she winged her lectures. Workload is very reasonable, 10-15 pages a night. There were 2 exams, a paper, 4 quizzes, and a presentation. Take her! She's really nice!

Dr. Royal is intelligent but kind of flighty. Sometimes she'll return reading quizzes the next day, other times the next week. The basis of this class is that you read all the works and come to class prepared to talk about what's going on. If you don't and she calls on you, it's only your fault. Your grade is dependent on participation, a bunch of quizzes (sometimes more than one a week), exams, and an easy 10 minute presentation on one of the books read. I didn't think I'd pull an A because of low exam scores, but I guess my quizzes and attendance pulled through.

Completely devoid of any discernable worth. She shows up late for class, and then in a simpering, whiny, kindergarten type voice proceeds to READ ALOUD TO US for SOMETIMES 40 MINUTES AT A TIME. I think that as college students, we are all literate enough to do that on our own. She is clearly unprepared, and has to flip through the pages of the book while saying "ummmm.... so.... well..." as she tries to find a specific passage she wants to read to us (often the same one multiple times, if it's one she likes)- they're called bookmarks, use them. She plays movies in class, because she knows we cannot really learn anything from her, as she is utterly inept. She (despite the read alouds that take 40 minutes, when I read them in 15 on my own) often finishes before the full 2 hours are up (also doesn't give you a break during that time) and when that occurs, she stands stammering more ummms and uhhs and so's, and then asks "so, what do you guys want to do? Let's talk about our favorite character and why. Just for another 10 minutes and then I'll let you out early". If her (dull, unenlightening) lecture is over, we should not be forced to sit and listen to her talk about her feelings. Furthermore, she is overly sensitive and takes it personally if you: laugh/ eat/ talk during class EVEN IF SHE ISN'T LECTURING AT THE TIME. Bottom line: if you cannot read, or you really miss story time from your preschool days, take her. Otherwise find someone whose IQ isn't 30 points below the class average.

I'm in her 252 class right now. It's pretty laid back, you have some reading to do, then you go into the class and either she'll talk about it or you'll talk about it in a group. The work load in completely manageable; it's less than an hour a week most of the time. She has regular reading quizzes tho, so you actually have to read. She wants you to memorize some weird small details, but there aren't too many of them, just before quizzes and tests make sure you know how to spell names and stuff. Really this was my favorite class this quarter, but my other classes were all finance and economics.

Dr.Royal expects way too much out of you for a GenEd class. When reading Crim and Punishment she would assign over 100 pages of reading in one night. That means we had les than 24 hours to read this boring book and deal with the rest of our classes. You are required to do an in class presentation for about 10 minutes, wrote two papers and an in class essay. On the in class essay she busted me on every ittle spelling error, she fails to take in to account that we had less than 50 minutes to write it. She is usually unorganized in class and seems like she wings it miost of the time. Be ready for a lot of reading and a lot of boring class discussions.

This is one of the worst teachers I have had at Cal Poly. She is boring, unprepared, and takes an entire lecture to say something that could be covered in ten minutes. Her questions are unclear, grading standards are more unclear, and is insufferable to listen to for four hours/wk. She likes people that kiss ass, too.

This is the most boring class at cal poly. she chooses books that make you want to shoot yourself (ie Crime and Punishment). takes an hour to cover what i could learn in 5 minutes. i am so glad to be done with this class!!!

This class is really a joke. There's a lot of reading, but if you can't do it all, at least read sparknotes. The lectures are extremely boring, but going to class is important because she puts stuff of the tests from lecture. She never is prepared with her lectures, so she just asks the class to discuss the reading or we watch a movie. Also she's an ex hippy who admitted to trying shrooms. HAHA! This class is easy, yet painfully boring. Somehow I got a C+ without doing any reading at all.

She has no structure to the class. Instead of explaining ideas she just puts movies on. She does not answer questions students have. She takes roll everyday and if you miss more than 2 classes for any reason, you grade drops one letter. Although she seems nice, I would advise not to take her.

Based on her polyratings I was not excited about taking her course, but it turned out to be one of my favorite classes I have taken at Cal Poly. Yes, she does use class discussion for the majority of her lectures, but I would prefer having an open discussion about the content than to be told what I should think about what happened in our readings (this is coming from someone who NEVER participates in class discussions, I Wanted to participate everyday). I thought she was a very fair grader, and rather open to alternate interpretations of reading materials other than her own. If you do your reading (yes, some is VERY feminist, but MOST is interesting) you will do fine on the tests, and it seemed like everyone passed the GWR. There were three tests and a presentation, all of them were easy if you did your reading and came to class. I highly recommend this course.

I really enjoyed Dr. Royal's class. She's a great teacher and a great lady. She is very well traveled and culturally experienced, so group discussions are always interesting. (she also always has these weird stories that are kinda funny) If you read the material, which was mostly very good, then the lectures are much better and you will totally understand what she is trying to say, and will do well on the tests. I noticed that the people in my class that disliked her, disliked her because of a grade they received. So don't listen to the bitter students. they're just being idiots.

Dr. Royal is a very nice lady, and easy to get along with. I took the class because I needed another english class and to knock out my GWR and Cultural Pluralism requirements. That being said, the class didn't hold my attention. A few of the books we read were well written and entertaining, and I enjoyed the in-class analysis. However, there is a presentation that every student has to do over the course of the quarter. So you will find that the first 45 minutes of every class period consists of really boring presentations, which contain material that you have probably already heard. My presentation was boring too, I'm sure. I felt like I could do the analysis of the novels on my own, and save myself from banging my head against my desk for an hour each class period, so I didn't attend regularly. This is not recommended, as I really should have earned a B in the class, and ended up with a C. Her syllabus does say that lack of attendance will result in the lowering of your grade, so it was warranted. My recommendation is that if you need another english class, and the GWR and cultural pluralism requirements, it is a good class to take, because it is very easy, just be prepared to grind the quarter out. Oh, and get your presentation out of the way early.

While this class may lack some basic structure, unlike what everyone else says below, Professor Royal is extremely nice. She cares about her students and treats them with respect. Granted, this class was pretty boring and very interactive, don't expect to go to class, sit down, and not participate. Some of the stuff you read sucks, like Clifton and Carneros, however the last book you read "Middle Passage" is very good and tells the story of a black man on a slave ship. I would probably recommend this class because it is pretty easy and she is really nice. However, I took it over summer and was done in 5 weeks, it would be pretty brutal to sit through for a full quarter, but overall it's not bad and not hard at all

Dr. Royal taught an interesting and excellent English class. Our reading material consisted of a few novels, a film, and selected poetry. As a CPE major, I assumed that I would remain uninterested in the class material; however, Dr. Royal's assignments and lectures continually held my interest and led me to enjoy the class overall. She always strove for interesting discussions that included all students' perspectives. As for difficulty, if you are used to college-level writing, you will likely do well in the class. The class seemed moderately challenging, yet not overly difficult. If you constantly struggle with writing, however, consider sharpening your and taking her class anyway. You will learn a lot. :)

If you need to take this class and need to get your GWR out of the way, I would recommend that you take this class. It was very interesting and the authors that were interesting as well. The work load was reasonable and even though we had 4 books to read, it was doable. Dr. Royal is a fair professor and really wants to help her students. For example, if you don't agree with her interpretations of the novels, she is gracious and accepting of everyone's opinions. I really enjoyed this class...

English 346 is a pretty easy class, the only real challange is staying awake for 2 hours of poetry and book discussion (which you are required to go to or she fails you), which can be incredibly painful. Considering most of the stuff you read can be interpreted a million ways, essays are pretty easy to write. The only reason I didn't get an A is beause of the second test. I thought it would be an essay, that I could B.S.; I had gotten an A on the first quiz and test that way. Unfortunatly, on this test, you had to pop out the first and last names, plus copyright decades, and other nit picky details. The final was a take home essay, and there is a presentation, sometime during the quarter as well. I would recommend this class, because there is simply no other way to get a C4 + GWR + USCP all at the same time, and it should be an easy B or better (with minimal effort).

This class can be really boring, but it's easy to get a good grade. I took it over the summer so it was four 2 hour classes every week...But if you're a competent writer you will get an A in this class. I didn't even try that hard and I got an A, but took it Credit/No Credit because I thought she was going to be a harder grader. She does have that kind of drawn out sleepy way of talking which kinda puts you to sleep, but for the most part she'll talk for most of the class or get sidetracked which takes up like 20 minutes or more.

She's really funny and nice, class discussions are interesting. Make sure you keep up on the reading though, there are reading quizzes pretty often! I did well on all of them though, and I'm usually terrible at keeping up with reading. It's a lot of short stories and about two short novels. I enjoyed both novels a lot, the first one took a little while to get into but was worth it! I'm glad I took her class. :)

Dr. Royal is a very nice lady. However, that does not make up for the fact that she is NOT a good lecturer. I took her this past summer for a 5 week class. We only had to read 4 novels, so the workload is extremely light. We only had two papers to do, plus one in-class paper(for the GWR). There was no homework and only a handful of in-class writing assignments. The trick to doing well in Dr. Royal's class is not to have more absences than the syllabus says you can. I technically earned a 95% in her class and she gave me a B because I missed a few classes. The lectures are pointless, you are never tested on the info and it does not contribute at all to your papers. You are forced to attend class just to please her because she takes it personally if people do not show up. Take Dr. Royal if you want an easy class, but be prepared to make it to every single class in order to get the A you deserve.

Dr. Royal chose some interesting books for us to read, except some of them totally sucked. She didn't realize this, and kept touting them as great novels. I wrote my final paper on how two of the books could have been better but weren't. That, combined with getting a zero on the first midterm (I didn't read for it), made me amazed that I somehow pulled off a D. The class is two midterms, a final paper, and a presentation. It wasn't hard, but the lectures in the second half really started to drag. Keep up on your reading and you'll do better than I did.

She is very relaxed and very easygoing with the class. Most of the 5 books we read were interesting. We have to give 1 individual presentation on part of the reading during the quarter. For our first exam, we were able to bring our book in. If you don't pass the GWR the first time, she lets you try again on your own during the next test or during her office hours. The tests were not bad. For the final, your write a 5-7 page paper comparing and contrasting some ideas she gives you about the last two books. One funny thing is she will admit if she had no idea where her thought was going.
