had him for IME143 lec and lab. Overall he seemed pretty good. His testing was fair, though there is always a question or two that comes out of nowhere. I thought i was doing BAD, but ended up with a B....still dont know how that happened. Anyway, he is a fair guy that trys to keep you interested in machining and I would DEFINITELY RECOMMEND HIM if you have a choice.

Nice guy. This was my first machining class, unlike many other people in there so it was sort of tough for me especially on the tests where you need to use formulas and remember various parts of the machines. Lectures are pretty dry but labs are interesting and you make some cool stuff. Great teacher.

He doesn't give much homework, but what he gives he expects you to remember on the midterm and final. Most of the grades handed out were A's. Some of his lectures can put you to sleep, but pay close attention. He goes fast, but you can print out all the lecture notes beforehand and write down other notes in the margins which helped out a lot. He's very reasonable with what he expects you to know and you will learn some of the basics of machining.

The letures are pretty boring for this class, but that was probably because he gets into a lot of technical stuff that you don't necessarily need to know in order to operate the machinery, so I wasn't really too interested. Anyways, there is one midterm, and the final, plus three lecture homework assignments. If you follow his outlines for studying for the midterm and final you should do ok, just make sure you actually know the stuff because the tests are actually pretty decently difficult.

Rainey isn't too bad. The homework the first few weeks isn't too bad and then all you have to do the rest of the quarter is study for the midterm and the final. I wouldn't recommend reading or even buying the textbook unless you are an IME major or something. I'm EE and it was just a support class so I'll never use this stuff again. Everything he wants you to know is posted on blackboard and he even highlights important stuff (i.e. stuff on the tests) in red on the powerpoints. Overall a pretty easy lecture to get an A in.

Rainey is a nice old man who came out of retirement to teach this machining class and at least one other this quarter. He did a good job of teaching this, however machining is a class that you shouldn't have a lecture for in my eyes. It is a 100% learn by doing subject, so the lab part of this class was much more important. I had a different professor for lab. Rainey's homework was once a week on polylearn and took about 30 minutes to an hour. It had mistakes and strange wording but sort of helped. Tests were not very fair and tested our knowledge on subjects that don't define how good we are at machining. But all in all, Rainey did a good job. I don't think he was a very boring professor like some people on here have claimed.A

Had him for his last quarter here, unless he comes back as a volunteer like a number of faculty are in engineering (Budget cut conspiracy, I know 2 volunteers). Old school machinist with lots of knowledge but a permanent scowl. Straight forward fill-in-blank notes. Exams all MC and straight foward. Attend class, do HW and ace exams. Easy

You know, I don't understand it. I can handle physics, I can handle calc, statics, etc., but this guy made this little 3 unit class WAY harder than it had to be. You know something is wrong when you're stressing over passing this class rather than calc or statics. This guy will tell you right off the bat that he is "very into education" and comes from a "family of education," and how he spends "8 hours" preparing for every hour of class. Honestly, maybe instead of preparing so much he should recognize that the material he lectures on is way different from what his tests cover. IF YOU DO NOT READ THE BOOK OR DO THE HW PROBLEMS YOU WILL DO AWFUL ON HIS TESTS. Overall, this guy trys WAY too hard to make this class so much harder then it needs to be. If you can get another teacher, do it.

Professor Rainey is very knowledgable about the material, and he lets you know it. The material can be a little difficult, but he explains it pretty good. The only thing I didn't like about him was that he would not slow down, so you can't fall behind at all. Overall, though, he's a decent professor.

Prof. Rainey is a fair teacher. I had him for MATE 210 and IME 143. There was no homework in MATE 210. He gave 6 quizzes in class that were soooooooo easy one-question quizzes. He even dropped your lowest 2 quiz scores. The exams were based on the lecture material and were not too difficult. To be fair, he makes sure that his questions are worded clearly or he'll refund the points. If most of the class get a question wrong, he'll refund the points. Take him if you want to learn the material and have a fair assessment of your knowledge for a grade.

Nice guy. Smart guy. BAD Teacher. He doesn't convey the material well at all, and is even more clueless that the students don't get it. Also probably has something to do with the (very large) class being purely powerpoint taught. Get another teacher, and a smaller classroom. Niebuhr is good.

AVERAGE teacher. I went to every class, but slept through most of it, he has that effect on people. Just read the book, yes all of it, and got an A. If you want pretty much a guaranteed A in the class, read the book. Takes about 3-5 hours before each midterm, i think its worth it considering theres absolutely no homework.

Dr. Rainey tried to be a good professor, but it just never happened. He teaches the class strictly by powerpoint and he goes through them so fast that it's super difficult to copy down anything he's saying. The first two tests were reasonable because he gives copies of old tests and almost all of the questions were either from the old test or word for word off from the suggested homework problems. So do the homework! Every test had at least one question where I had never seen the material. He gives bonus points on tests if too many students miss certain problems, which saved a lot of people's grades. The final was definitely much harder, I tried to go into office hours for help, it didn

This is representing the experience of buddy of mine some years back. The guy was a good teacher...and is fair and reasonable with grades. The only advice I can give to people that take him for anything is to be prepared to deal with a guy who has no sympathy for Seniors on AP/Contract and for some reason all the sypathy for idiot Freshmen in the same situation. Dr. Rainey is the former Assistant Dean of Engineering and was in charge of AP letters, contract letters, and dismissal letters. The story goes that he kicked out a student in his 4th year who had a traumatizing situation and wasn't able to function properly for a couple weeks....(same damage lets say if his whole family was killed). He got kicked out anyway, was and was eventually re-admitted....(much thanks to Stacey Brietenbauch for being fair and reasonable)...no thanks for all those dumass non engineering students in the advising center who happily say "your appeal for dismissal was denied and your fucked". The rest of the story is that at the same point in time some Freshmen had his appeal granted because he had to go to court and miss school..why...?...because he "got drunk on Mardi Gras and through a stick of dynamite at 9 police officers." Now my question to Cal Poly is...why did you let this man allow pathetic students like this to stay at Poly when they could have gone to cuesta and taken their time to get back in, and at the same time tell hard working older students.."sorry, your fucked..go become a janitor." I hear the man does Campus Crusade..must be a hypocryte, cause no real Christian would ruin peoples lives this way. In the real world, a Senior VP makes a mistake and is let off the hook, a intern or junior engineering just starting makes the same mistake..he's fired......it's called "SENIORITY!" Cal Poly, please fire this man for being a retarted asshole when he really knows better.

Rainey is an awesome professor. He understands that this class is like 'trying to take a sip from a fire hydrant', so he makes sure that you know concepts, not details. He covers A LOT of material, so make sure you go to his office hours for any clarifications. He basically tells you what you should know for the test, and what not to know. He makes the class really interesting because he worked in the industry for so long, so he has lots of stories. Highly recommended.

Dr. Rainey teaches using power point. It's dry and boring and I often fell asleep in class. However, I really don't think this material could have been taught any other way. He gives quizzes on his power point presentations for just about every chapter so be sure to look over his slides before each class. The midterms are divided into multiple choice and free response. The multiple choice comes mostly from the book. The questions can be very specific. Memorize facts, processes, terms, etc. The free response comes from his assigned homework and is usually very similar to the old midterms he provides for studying. If more than half the class misses a question, he provides everyone with points. He's a pretty funny guy. He has some entertaining stories. I thought he did his best to convey this very uninteresting material. Take Dr. Rainey for MATE 210.

Lectures with power point a little backwards. Instead of giving you slides with blanks and having you fill it in along the way, he shows slides with blanks and gives you the complete copy. I guess it was nice when I missed class. Definitely print out the slides before class though, you won't be able to keep up if you hand write them. No homework due, but generally a quiz is given every week or two, but if you're there and pay attention, you can usually figure out what he's gonna ask, it's never a trick or too hard. One day, we just had to sign our name. Midterm mult. choice came mostly from the book, so read the book and you'll do fine. Midterm free response was almost exactly like previous free response, which he gives you. Final not-cumulative, only 50 question mult. choice. Fair in grading, gives extra points if more than half the class misses a question. Great teacher for MATE 210

Rainey is a good teacher that is laid back. There is a lot of memorization in the class but tells you what you need to know. You'll have to study a fair amount but a B is very doable. Lecutres are boring, but he posts the powerpoints. Generous curve on three midterms (final is not cumulative).

Very poor lecturer. All his notes are on PowerPoint witch he either reads verbatim or will act out a skit where each key term on that slide becomes a character, which usually go something like "so then martensite says to perlite, I like you lets go get some coffee, but then ol' sphreodite is siting in the back getting all jealous decides to but in, OK now is everybody with me?". He is a nice guy who cares about student success, but how big of a difference does that really make in 200 person class. But if you get this class don't worry, just memorize the entire textbook and you'll do just fine.

power points are provided before class but they are typically around 70 slides for each chapter... give or take 20 slides or so obviously it can get boring very easily and it being 7:30 in the morning doesnt help either one thing that i didnt like about his class was he doesnt update his powerpoint slides.... the ones he reads from in class dont always match the ones he posts on blackboard... so sometimes he has junk slides a lot of material but if u keep up it isnt too bad... i just dont work well in boring classes so if u can then his class isnt too bad final is all Multiple guess non cumulative no homework quizzes for each chapter (11? total) these arent too bad

What a joke this class was. Im sure Rainey is a decent professor in a different setting, but in this 200 person lecture hall, every morning he simply reads powerpoint slides to you. There is absolutely no reason to go to class, you can read the powerpoint slides to yourself at home. He gives a handful of attendance quizzes that are only worth 5%, yes 5% of the grade, so if you're one of those tools who wants every last point then ya you better go to class. i literally read over the powerpoints for a few hours for the midterm and got real familiar with the calc problems he posted. oh ya thats another thing, he posts 2 past exams before each midterm. look at those, do the problems, and you're golden. At about 2 weeks in i realized this guy is just going to read to us for an hour and a half, im not getting up at 7 anymore for this, so i stopped going. Got a 96% on first midterm, a 100% on second one (set the massive curve cause his mutiple choice questions were all fucked up). im a civil engineering major so materials is not something im pro at by any means, but it is a 200 level course afterall and i took it as a senior, so i guess i had an advantage over all the idiot freshman who had no idea how to study in there who were pulling Cs and Ds on the tests. overall, most every engineering major has to put up with this class, and if you're smart you will take rainey if hes teaching it. enjoy putting in about 9 hours of studying the entire quarter and getting an A, haha

Wow, what a boring class to have to go to at 7:30 twice a week! Like others have said, there's about 5 quizzes worth a total of 5% of your total grade and the two midterms and the final make up the other 95%. To be honest, his power point slides are so boring that I had trouble to just getting up and going to class. I mean, his quizzes were usually just a signature on a roll call sheet but I couldn't even bear to sit through the other 90 minutes of lecture, of him talking about all his past accomplishments, how he fixed all these major problems at companies he's worked for, etc etc. he's really full of himself and after a while, hearing about MIT, Purdue and all the major corporations he's worked gets old. There's just far too much material to cover for each test. Just cram and hope for the best, especially if you've got a busy quarter. Bottom line, take Harding if you want to learn something and be entertained at the same time of day.

One word: mediocre. Lectures were boring, and 7:40 AM class didn't help either. Rainey just read off his powerpoint and talked about his past consulting jobs. Easy 3 units though, just read the slides and make sure you can do the suggested homework. Tests are curved also, and the final is noncummulative.

Badly needs to tidy up the slides that he gives to the class and the PowerPoint lectures that he gives, they're very cluttered, can be difficult to follow, and are often many many slides too long. Often to the point where he skipped entire slides just saying, "Oh, don't worry about this." Overall, the class still wasn't particularly difficult, but clearer instruction would help in the future.

To all out there looking to take MATE 210, don't take it with Rainey. He takes his job way to seriously for this course and I stopped coming to class because I would just sit there and take note of which slides were and weren't going to be on the tests. Rainey really likes to talk about himself and how great he is too. The only issue with this is that everything he makes is cluttered. Slides are cluttered, instructions are unclear, and tests are also cluttered and contain a various amount of errors. I went in to take my final and he had to correct 6 errors on a 50 point test. After my first midterm, I went into office hours to talk to him about why I got a question wrong and it took me asking him three questions before he answered with something else other than "it's just not right, you did it wrong." Obviously I came to office hours to understand why what I did was wrong because if it were right, I wouldn't have been asking him for help. Bottom line: If you're going to take MATE 210, take it with another professor that is willing to help you along the way and genuinely cares about your interest in the subject.

This guy is a DICK on steroids... Breakdown : Midterm1: 33%, Midterm2: 33%, Final: 34% Midterm 1 & 2 : 20 multiple choice questions (20points) , 80 points of working out problems/TorF/Definitions/etc... = 100 points. Final: 50 multiple choice questions. (****understand the graphs, concepts, etc...) So basically, he has about 100 slides of powerpoint for each damn chapters and goes over like 3-4 chapters in a week... WTF...which are all uploaded online on PolyLearn. Half of the people dont attend the class because its so damn early 7:40am in winter... and he just reads the powerpoints... Everything is out of order, so much infos and half of this does not come out on the test. He does not give a flying F**K about you, because he is retiring or some bullshit. He talks about places he worked and boast about it so much it ain't even funny after awhile. When you go to office hour to tell him he made mistakes on the test, he tells you, "have you looked at the midterm solution and went over what you did wrong?" and then he tells you, it was your fault, so no corrections. He is like 70 years old with a beard, but he dress classy. I think he is somewhat nice as a person, but sucks as a professor. *HE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU AT ALL. I recommend you to take it with different professor if you want to understand the concept and actually learn something. The goodside is he uploads all the old midterms from previous quarters, which you MUST STUDY and DO THE HW SUGGESTION HE PUTS ON POLYLEARN to actually teach yourself to pass the class.

Rainey is an absolute joke of his teacher. The only thing I ever learned from this old man is that he went to MIT, he didn't teach anyone anything about materials engineering. He tries to portray himself as a nice old man but if you try to talk to him in office hours he can be a complete dick. And lastly, his final was the most poorly written test I've ever taken in my entire life. With all that being said the class is still pretty easy. I never went to class and just pulled all nighters before each of the tests and did really well. If you're a MATE major or if you have a desire to actually learn the material I would recommend the book but if you're just trying to skate through you'll probably be fine just looking at the powerpoint slides. And for the final just memorize random graphs and pictures from his powerpoint. Avoid Rainey.

Rainey is a pretty awful professor. Basically a normal day in class would be him blowing through slides at a rate of one every 10 seconds so it gets to the point where there is not much point in trying to keep up. But don't worry nothing on those slides would have made any logical sense anyways sense his slides are basically just random equations and notes and pictures all thrown together so when you go back to look at them online its like a puzzle trying to understand what everything means. You'd think that if he went through some of the slides so quickly it would be because those slides were not important and won't be on the test but you'd be wrong. He literally tries to test you on everything even if it seemed completely useless and skipped over in class. The only time he leaves a slide up for very long is to talk about MIT or something he did with his friends the other day. Basically the best way to get through this class with a decent grade is to cram the night before the tests and teach yourself everything. Even then something that was never gone over at all in class will likely show up on the test anyways. My advice is to take literally anybody else for this class, I've heard the rest of the professors are pretty good.

Everything this professor taught me was a blur. I forced myself to attend every single 7:40 AM lecture and still had no idea what he was talking about. Rainey is a nice guy, but a bit overqualified to be teaching an introductory course like MATE 210. He focuses entirely on concepts and hardly any actual problems (which make up 80% of the midterms). Some people work well with his teaching style, but if you're like me and need to actually "learn by doing", avoid Rainey.

Eh? He was alright...an okay teacher but he didn't feel very approachable. He is very concerned with his students really "getting" the material. His tests were very fair, though there was one or two questions left that you going 'wha?' simply because you would have had to memorize the whole book to pick up that one tidbit of information.

This is the easiest class you will ever take! Rainey is a sweet teacher and there is absolutely no workload for this class. Transp. and Manufacturing fulfills the Area F and if you are lucky enough to fall into this goldmine you better pat yourself on the back. There are two midterms which are both OPEN NOTE! Rainey lectures maybe twice the whole quarter because he pretty much has better things to do. You get out of class early every single time sometimes up to an hour early. There is not a final and he makes you do a presentation and a paper which are easy. He gives quizzes on other peoples presentations and that becomes your final exam grade. The average grade in the class was an 88% and there were only 4 C's. Do not be scared by the way this class may come off because a freshman in high school could dominate this class. Rainey knows the class is easy and he just wants people to have some fun in their lives

Rainey's class is hard, but very well worth it. He tries very hard to make the class interesting and he lectures in a very orderly manner. the tests are kinda long and some questions are tough(make sure you watch all the movies and pay close attention). Your allowed to have a full sheet of paper for the exams and make sure you use it. He tries to bring real world experiance into his class and make sure you think about some important things like wishing your life way by just saying "I just have to take one more test" then looking back and realizing it's all over.................. Great teacher would take again

Professor Rainey is a really smart guy and he makes this class easy on the students. There are 2 tests, a 30 minute presentation, and quizzes on the presentations. Some of the questions on the test asked about stuff he never talked about, but he made up for it by curving the test. The presentations were the worst part of the class because they went on for 3 weeks. My advice is to get it over with early so you can just kick back the rest of the quarter. You get in a team of three to present on a disaster or a great invention. The class and the instructor evaluate you and he averages them together. The presentations are conducted by the other instructor (Gibbs), but Rainey gives the final grade. Take this class to fulfill your F area for GE's!!!

Super easy class--think of it as \"Engineering for Dummies.\" Unfortunately, he REALLY dumbs it down so you don\'t end up learning as much as you could. There is no textbook and no reading for the class. Your exam comes entirely from \"lecture\" which is either a series of powerpoint or an old episode of \"Modern Marvels.\" Print out the stuff he puts online and circle the things he discusses in class. Do a little review 3 days before the exams and you\'ll be golden--exams are scantron multiple choice. You need to go to class, too, because there are various \"attendance quizzes.\" The only difficult part of the class is group presentation on a technical issue. If you can get into this class for GE area F DO IT! Really nice guy too!
