Ring is a promising teacher. I think he learned a lot his first quater of teaching. The first few weeks he was pretty bad at teaching; the lectures where a jumbled mess and he worked too hard trying to get everyone to like him. Once he realized we all hated him, he started teaching much better. Just realize that the material is a little tough the first time you hear it. Get a study group together and visit him in office hours, you'll do fine in Rings class.

This instructor is new... I believe that you would say fresh out of grad school. Seems like a pretty good guy, don't know how well he'll present the material though.

David Ring is a great instructor, he presents things clearly and makes sure you understand. His tests arent too hard, but you have to study a little still. He is a bit goofy sometimes but i guess that makes the class more interesting. We seem to always get out 10 to 20 minutes early everyday which a major plus.

Professor Ring is definitely young, but he is a great teacher already. He is very funny and entertaining in class. He is very clear about everything he teaches. He is also very good at answering all in-class questions. His tests seem fair when you take them, but he is a very strict grader. Also...he always lets you out 10-20 min. early every day, and he DOESN'T HAVE AN ACCENT! Absolutely take him if you can.

This guy is a fantastic prof. He lectures very well and makes the concepts easy to understand. You could say he's really really young, but the way I look at that is that since he's young, he can remember what he had problems with when he was in school and this translates to better help for us... Take him if you can, I HIGHLY recommend him.

ring equals bad teacher! this guy is horrible! not only does his geeky voice mess up in lecture, he is the worst grader on tests! u can set up a whole problem, do everything right excpet for an additon error and he'll give u 5/40 points!! he does not know how to teach and gives very hard homework problems which r graded harshly also!!

TAKE RING! He is a pretty tough grader on the tests, but the material is soooo straightforward that you shouldn't have too much difficulty anyway. Go to class...in case you were wondering, I got an 'F' because I never went because I want OUT of the EE program, but that's a whole different story...so, once again...TAKE RING! He's very approachable, he gives plenty of examples, and he's very reasonable about the load of homework (once a week) and the problems he gives on the tests.

I dont recommend taking this guy. He was very inexperienced. He did not present things clearly at all. He just does some examples, and usually messes up. He is no help if you have questions about a concept. His tests are straight forward, but he gives almost no partial credit. Problems on the test are worth 20 points, and I only got 4/20 for forgetting 1 negative sign. He graded this way on all the tests. At least homework makes up 30% of the grade, and the grader is very nice.

Ring is the perfect teacher for the lower EE courses. He sets the mood off quite well; doesn

A great teacher who makes the classroom fun and enjoyable. Aside from his good lectures, what really makes him a great teacher are his office hours. Going in there, it is nice to see a really open enviornment which doesn't make you feel intimidated...even if it is a coffee room. His tests are hard and partial credit is slim to none. But, as long as you go over the hw, which counts for a large portion of your grade, there is nothing you havent seen before.

Ring is a great guy personally; however his grading was for the most part unfair and his expectations were set to a ridiculous level. One problem on the final was so hard that as far as I know (and I talked to many students in the class) one problem which was a large chunk of the test no one got. He gives almost no partial credit, for example if you get 20 ohms for an answer and the correct answer was negative twenty, getting 2/30 points is not unusual! Luckily homework is 25% of your final grade so if you do it diligently you can pass even if you do poorly on the tests. In class he would often do complex math steps really quickly using his notes and not be able to show us the actual math or answer questions about how he solved a certain part of the problem. All in all Ring is a nasty grader and mediocre lecturer making an already challenging class even worse.

he didnt let me use his printer, but other than that, he was a great teacher. gives the hardest tests you will ever take in your life, homework too. but other than that, he is great in office hours and you usually get out early....just dont ask to use the printer. he does a good job of conveying the material and getting his point across, but don't think that just because he is a nice guy his tests will be easy.

The Ring man - like my friends and I say, you'll love this guy every day of the entire quarter except for 3 day: the 2 days you have to take his midterm and the day of the final. Definetly not a bad lecturer, he gives you all the material you need to know but not very in-depth. Assigns homework and a couple of PSPICE projects of which isn't all extremely challenging. The way he grades is one of the things that people dislike the most, second only to his tests. He grades based on how you're doing with respect to the rest of the class, so if you get scores on your homework or tests better than the class average, then you're doing alright. His tests are SO hard there is almost no way to predict the curveballs he's gonna throw at you. Office hours are definetly helpful, except that he never just gives you the answer, he makes you figure out what you did wrong on your own... which is a good learning process and a very frustrating one at time. Funny and down to earth guy, knows what he's talking about, would definetly recommend him.

Ring is the best professor I have had a Poly. He is a really cool guy and he knows the material really well. His lectures are usually about 40 minutes long. I hate when professors lecture to the last minute every class. He grades hard, but fairly. He puts a fat curve on the class at the end. I will take Ring every opportunity I get and I suggest you do too.

Examine the previous statements and then throw out the ones that seem too self-promoting. The experience with Ring falls into three categories: presentation/teaching, work/testing and grading. -Presentation/teaching: No real theory. If all you want is math, you're in for a treat. Categorizes effectively, clear, but examples are too simple. Go to office hours to learn anything particularly useful. -Work/testing: Homework is reasonable difficulty (if you know what's going on), and he gives a week, which should be enough. Tests are only a few problems, but can be ten times as hard as homework, and only 50 min. -Grading: Absolutely horrible. Points based on where a mistake is made. Easy to get 2 out of 40 for generally quality work. However, he curves, so you'll still pass if other people got slightly worse. The class in general: Be prepared for little or no explanation of how parts work or why we put them together the way we do. It's all math: finding currents/voltages, redrawing circuits, blah, blah.

You will like ring except for 3 days of the quarter (test days). I found his tests to be some of the hardest I have ever taken, and got in the 60 or lower on most of em (the average). The test questions are really easy once you find the trick, which i never could do during the test. He does grade hard, but it's consistent, and he curves so it all works out. I took him for 112 and 212 and got b's in both. If the curve is too low he lets you redo tests for like 1/3 of the points you missed. His hw will save you if you do well on it, and he is really really good in office hours, probably the best i have ever had. He is kind of a lazy lecturer, but he gives you the info you need and doesnt waste your time. He normally let us out like 20 minutes early. Overall i would reccomend him, just beware of his tests.

Professor Ring in lab is not nearly as bad as he is in his lecture class... mainly because there are no midterms/tests, although there is a final (practical lab). Most of the time when you have a problem with your set-up he'll help you figure it out within a decent amount of time. However the lab itself is very time consuming... you'll find yourself in lab for the entire 3 hours for many of the labs, so there's no getting out of it except to just tough it out. His lab write-ups are kind of long and he is picky, so I recommend asking someone who's had him for lab before about what he's picky on so you get those points. Not a bad guy to have for lab, the lab for this class just sucks so just grit your teeth and get through it. Oh and his lab final is somewhat difficult.
