Dr. Macedo is one of the best teachers I've ever taken!! I highly recommend him!! He is fair with his tests and more than clear in class and lab assignments. Try him and you'll see what I'm talking about! I really wish there were more teachers like him at Cal Poly!!!

Okay for the most part this class should be cake since its an entry level class, but macedo kept us busy for the most part. What really got us was the huge group project we have to do for this class based on all we've learned all quarter long. He didnt give much guidance on it which sucked, and you could never really tell how you were doing in the class since he never returned any labs or hw's. Be ready to fall asleep during lecture and make sure to read the book.

HEEEEY. ANYWAYS IME 223 WAS RATHER BORING FOR THE MOST PART. HIS ACCENT DOES NOT ENTIRELY AFFECT HIS TEACHING HOWEVER HE SEEMS TO GO OFF AND BLABBER AWAY AT TIMES EVEN WHEN STUDENTS ASK QUESTIONS. ALTHOUGH MINIMAL,DO ALL THE H/W. REVIEW NOTES AND PRACTICE PROBLEMS FOR THE MIDTERM AND FINAL.AND MAKE SURE THE FINAL PROJECT IS COMPLETED BEFOREHAND. NOT A VERY CHALLENGING CLASS. OVERALL LAME CLASS TAUGHT BY LIL COCKY ASS INSTRUCTOR, PERIOD.

the class was almost too easy. i bought the book, but i think you could easily get by without it. it was only used for one quiz, which such a bogus quiz that hardly anybody passed it. if you take really good class notes, you'll be fine. the labs are fun and almost automatically get an A. the group project can be a bitch if your group was like mine--laziest mothers on the face of the earth. otherwise, that's not so hard. he gives very helpful input on the project if you ask. overall, good teacher.

Lectures were boring and dry. Didnt really convey material that well. For the project, we pretty much had to figure out what to do on our own for the first few weeks. The midterm was long and a lot of students complained about him not doing examples of some of those problems during lecture. Final was mostly multiple choice and manageable.

Dr. Macedo is a nice guy and is easy to talk to if it doesn't relate to class. However, with that said, he is BY FAR the worst teacher in the I.E. department. His midterm and final are poorly written and do not clearly evaluate your knowledge of the information in the course. If you do the work you WILL get a B, but he will not negotiate your grade. He is proud and will not budge on his decisions. He takes opposition personally and on several occasions was completely unprofessional. It is truely disheartening when a teacher who has had more than 5 years of industry experience is less professional than his students. Liz is by far a better teacher for this class, and it is worth not taking IME 223 in a given quarter if you can't avoid Macedo. Do not give this man tenure.

Dr. Macedo had too many time commitments last quarter and pretty much screwed our class in terms of dedication to it or caring about our students. You'll learn stuff from the books and he has a few successful lectures, but they weren't any good because his midterm was nothing like his examples. We had a quarter-long project but were given very little guidance on what was expected of us. If you take IME 223, take it with Liz- it will be no stuggle at all compared to class with macedo. You'll probably get ten times more out of the class with Liz.

Macedo is a good teacher. I got kinda scared by the other reviews on here, but they weren't my experience at all. He could not grade easier, essentially if you turn it in you get credit. The hard part of his class is that he is horribly vague about everything. You just have to trust your instincts and be prepared to defend what you did.

Heard this guy is no longer the department head. Thank GOD because he was the most rude and uninspiring academic I have ever met in my life, and I am now pursuing my PhD. Macedo did not care about his students, made all meetings unproductive, and was an unprofessional, selfish academic who only cared about himself and his obnoxious personal agenda. It's a pity I must write this, but he is a shame to Cal Poly Engineering.

Boring mind-numbing lectures, boring labs. Lecture style was repetitive and slow. Sit in the front if you want to be able to hear him or see the board. Try'd to skip this class any time I could. Not really any homework, but it didn't make me like the class more.

Macedo is the perfect example of someone who is very knowledgeable in industry but cannot translate what he knows into the classroom. It was ironic that we were supposed to learn efficiency in a class that ran super inefficiently. Some of the lab days we had he would spend an hour or more on setup alone. That's hours of our time wasted just sitting and waiting for class to start. In lecture he did a poor job of actually teaching. He lectured from other people's powerpoints. (His syllabus wasn't even his, which we quickly found out with all the typos and things that he overlooked) He clicked too quickly through slides for us to write down any information, but refused to allow us to take notes on laptops (which would have made things so much easier). In our final project we were supposed to work with a factory in Santa Maria and propose improvements to a manufacturing process for them. But due to lack of planning on Macedo's part, we ended up finding out at the last minute we didn't have factories lined up to evaluate at all. We were instead expected to evaluate an oncampus shop (i.e. Aero hangar, Mustang 60, IME labs) that we weren't assigned to until the night before our expected first meeting and walk through. Macedo exemplifies lack of planning and lack of concern for his students grasp on the material he was supposed to be teaching. Like why bother becoming a professor if teaching isn't something you're going to make an effort to do

I genuinely tried hard in this class, and it didn't really matter. The tests didn't test fairly, and the homework was difficult and time consuming. Our group tried so hard on the project so that we could pass the class, going to office hours numerous times asking many questions, and we still got a bad grade on the project. We did everything he asked for, and it didn't matter. I don't like going into tests unprepared, but that is the way he wants you to feel I guess. He is very nice and knows his stuff, but that sure didn't help me do well in the class.

First off, there is no question that Dr. Macedo is extremely intelligent. He has a M.S. degree in Mechnical Engineering from Berkeley and a Ph.D in Industrial Engineering from Leigh University. Also, he is a certified Professional Engineer. Ok, now lets set his credentials aside and evaluate how Dr. Macedo is as a professor. I've taken two different courses with Dr. Macedo so far. I am will convinced that Dr. Macedo fail to properly convey the courses he teaches to his students. Take IME 326 for example. Almost half the class failed the fist midterm (there is only 1 midterm in this class, plus the final). He encouraged his students that failed his midterm to attend office hour so that they can go over the midterm (he doesn't hand his midterms back to students). Ofcourse, majority of the students that failed his midterm showed up promptly at office hours, but only to find Dr. Macedo lecturing them on how they should change their studying habits and that college is not high school anymore. Therefore, students resorted to asking questions in class. But when students asked questions in class, majority of the time they find themselves being insulted and disrespected. I wonder if the IME department really take time to read the student's evaluation on Dr. Macedo. I know a lot of people that actually take time and write comments about their objection towards Dr. Macedo. I hope Dr. Macedo devote the rest of his professional career as a professor solely to research instead of teaching. By doing so, students will have hope in their academic career and actually learn something useful instead of wasting their precious time and money by taking Dr. Macedo's courses.

Well, I didn't really like him the first time I took him, but I was new to Poly. Dr. Macedo has a wonderful way of presenting the material in a clear and concise manner. Also, he is quick to come up with solutions to questions during lecture. This guy really knows his stuff. Also, if you visit him during office hours, you will find that he will give 100% to help you understand the material, but don't expect to be lazy. I am looking forward to taking him for IME 430 next quarter.

Despite the negative comments below, I actually liked Dr. Macedo. His grading style was very “flexible” and most importantly, the Midterms were "equivalent" as the HW assignments. So if you do all of the HW (5 throughout the quarter), you should do very well on his midterms. In addition, he is very helpful during office hours. His teaching style would be much better if he did not rely so much on Minitab. Other than that, I would take him again.

I\'ll start off by saying that Dr. Macedo is a very nice guy and was very helpful in office hours regarding the project in the class. I felt Macedo spent a lot of time lecturing and writing down a lot of material that we never saw later in the quarter, and time moved very slow in his class. He could definitely be more efficient in his instruction. It was a 2-hr lecutre that could have easily been condensed down to an hour. He grades real tough on hw\'s, small mistakes would dock you down to 7/10. The midterm was somewhat difficult. Only reason I got a C was because of just an average midterm score and I accidentally missed a couple hw\'s in the beginning.

Macedo is a jerk, one of the worst IME professors. He may be really smart himself but with our class he made us learn the material ourselves and then would just answer some questions in class. If I hadn\'t taken stats in high school it wouldve been a lot harder. Macedo isn\'t a very friendly teacher to approach either.

NEVER take a 2 hour lecture with him. He is so incredibly boring. An hour and a half into the class, he makes you want to run out of the room screaming. No class activities, just straight lecture. Also, he is such a nit-picky grader. He gives questions on his exams with stuff he never taught and then takes off a bunch of points when we get it wrong. And he gives homework on material he never explained. Although statistics can be a relatively straightforward topic if it is explained well, he makes it suck.

There has not been an update in a while for this class. I am taking this course right now, and I feel as though he has improved. Dr. Macedo's IME 326 course has been one of the most legitimately useful courses I have taken at Cal Poly. It isn't a huge amount of work, as it consists of only a few homework assignments, a project, a midterm, and a final. Yes, he is boring, and yes, he grades fairly harshly (the highest grade on his midterm was a 92 and the average was a 74). More IMPORTANTLY, he shows the significance of the course. I was not excited to take it, but he has done a great job of showing when I will actually use this in life and getting the significance of each step across. He does not care if you necessarily get the actual answer correct, but more if you understand the process. This course has been one of the most useful I have taken at Cal Poly and I highly recommend Dr. Macedo as a professor for it

Macedo gets a bad reputation even though he's an extremely smart professor. Most students do not like his teaching style because his notes are unorganized and he relies on self-learning. However, he is extremely helpful in office hours and will sit down with you to help with a topic. One can be successful in this class as long as they put in the work.

Overall a pretty good teacher. His accent doesn't get in the way of learning that class, so you don't have to worry about that. I hate the material in general so I can't take it out on the teacher, but the information could have been presented a little more clearly. Seemed like there was a lot of extra information given. Never really brought the concepts that he was teaching back to a point/summarized. His notes are good, his tests are fair, the project isn't too bad. Overall I would recommend this teacher. He is helpful in office hours and definitely knows what he is talking about on the course topic.

Macedo is an awesome guy. The class is mostly statistics with an IME spin. The class is not very challenging and the 4-6 on fridays was killer. But we did get out early a lot and he brought us food all the time. If I had to take this class again (I hate stats) I would definitely take it w/ macedo. If you really don't know stats and want to learn the material in depth, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

Macedo did an great job with this class. Although for engineers this topic may not be appealing, he lays out lectures that are easy follow and understand. He puts up his notes on Blackboard for you to bring to class, and has sample problems that we as a class do together. We have reading quizes where you get a notecard, and assignments and lab projects where we get to work in groups. Overall, this class is pretty easy, just make sure you do the assignments as they really help you understand. This class is mostly statistics and the first four weeks or so are review and the bulk of the class is about how to construct control charts to evaluate quailty. Macedo is a great professor for this class.

This professor did a great job with this class. He explains everything we need to know about quality statistics and is very easy to pick up and learn. Notes can be printed online and the homework assignments were really helpful in learning this stuff. There are reading quizes every week and a couple of computer workshops. Overall, this class is easy if you have a good enough proficiency in statistics and even if you do not, the first few weeks are spent reviewing.

I think Macedo is one of the better teachers in the IE department right now. He is extremely proficient in statistical analysis and it comes out when he teaches the higher level courses. I had him for 319 last quarter and really liked the class (even though it's exactly the same as the Stats class we have to take). 430 didn't disappoint at all. I messed up on the first midterm and ended up with a C+ but was still able to pull of an A- by turning in all the homework and showing up for the labs and making a killer note sheet for the final. Everything you need to know is in the powerpoints that Macedo puts up on blackboard. Honestly I only opened up the book maybe twice to look something up. Printing them out before class is the way to go since you can take notes right on the sheets. Anyways, take Macedo and you'll learn a lot.

IME 430 is possibly the most interesting and applicable class I have taken at Poly. Dr. Macedo knows the material inside and out, both academically and professional. If you didn't like him for 223, that may be because you need to grow up and learn to perform at the college level, but nonttheless is far better at 430 than 223.

He’s just a terrible professor. He is so soft spoken that you can hardly hear him. Also, he is so boring that it’s almost impossible to pay attention the whole time. He doesn’t give back homework assignments so you don’t know if you did them correctly or not and then gives you no suggestions on what to study for midterms. Hence the class average was an F on the midterm. Overall, I’d give him below an F letter grade if there was such a thing

The instructor refused to give the students any guidance on what to study for his tests. He failed to provide necessary equations for students to complete test questions, resulting in a poor average on the midterm. He put the blame on students for not performing as well as previous classes, yet he had not provided any feedback throughout the quarter for us to improve or check our knowledge. The instructor sporadically assigned homework, sometimes without posting it on Polylearn or letting us know when it was due. No grades were given back the whole quarter except for the midterm, which we were not allowed to keep for review. I went to his office hours several times for help, but he almost always had a note on his door that he was out. Other times he was hesitant to give help during office hours, citing that he was busy and I should review the textbook. Most in class problems were worked out by the instructor on the Minitab software, but we were not allowed to use electronics in class, making it difficult to learn the process. Most assignments involved a topic that we were not taught until after their due date, and the instructor would berate us for not understanding the material. The professor actually cut a class period an hour short because he was late for a meeting that he had not told us about. Multiple students in the class had to plead with the teacher to give us a study guide for the final, to allow us to bring our own equation sheet, and to give us worked out example problems so that we had a chance of doing well on the final. I am extremely disappointed in the professor's competence for teaching and how poorly he handled criticism in class. He is so cautious about giving student the tools that they need for success because of his narrow view that it might give us an unfair advantage, keep us from learning, and result in some sort of legal repercussion for him.

I have never felt so compelled to leave a professor with a bad rating as I am now. I have had countless professors at Cal Poly, some good, and some bad. With the bad professors, there was always a positive takeaway, whether it was learning a lot regardless of an impractical teaching style, or not learning much but having a professor who genuinely cares and tries for their students. Professor Macedo embodies neither of those styles. It became apparent during this quarter that he isn’t interested in his students, nor does he have our best interest in mind. He assigns activities and homework at random, and never gives sufficient direction or instruction on how to do it correctly. Students have asked countless times for him to change up his teaching style, because it has been so ineffective- as evidenced by the mid term grades. He occasionally agrees and then proceeds to ignore all suggestions. i.e. Students asked if he could do a bit of a review on the last day of class, or do sample problems as none of us feel prepared for the final. Professor Macedo agrees, and then proceeds to show up to class and read off powerpoints (that he didn't make himself), completely ignoring that he promised the class a review. In my opinion, Professor Macedo falls very short of the qualifications necessary to teach at this school. I can confidently say that I have not learned nearly the amount that I should from this class. Just today in class, students asked if he could post sample problems, a study guide, or just give information on what he thinks would be important to study. It was VERY clear that the entire class is in a state of confusion and has absolutely no idea what is expected of us. The students as a whole are asking the professor to do his job, and help give us the tools we need to succeed. Macedo then goes on a nonsensical rant about how he will not give us any advice, study guide, or solutions to practice problems, as he states "learning how to solve just one problem doesn't tell you how to solve all problems". Day two of class, Macedo stated how he was going to use his slides from 2007 because he liked them better. On our midterm, Macedo gave us the SAME EXACT midterm he gave his class 10 years ago. The average this time was around a 60%, and as he stated "Much much lower than when the class 10 years ago took it". He then mentions how he will not curve the test, because the average was higher 10 years ago, and also blames us for "not studying" hard enough. Every effect has more than one cause, and I can guarantee the cause of this low average is Macedo's delusion thinking he's taught us anything, or has articulated his expectations of what he wants from us. Why am I paying to take a teacher’s class if he isn't willing to put in the work it takes to do his job? Why is it acceptable for him to use another university’s professor’s powerpoint, or utilize a test from 10 years ago - that, by the way, is based on an outdated book..while we’re required to purchase the more expensive edition? Why require us to purchase that if the school doesn’t think the material has changed? There seems to be a huge disconnect and inconsistency here. He uses the 6th edition textbook, but requires his students to purchase the 7th edition. It's now acceptable to expect our students to get an education in 2018 from all material from 2007, assuming that NOTHING has changed between 2007 and now? Times change, and teachers need to change with them. Macedo is unable to do so, and his mediocrity should not be associated with a school as great as Cal Poly. I feel that this quarter, I have been robbed of my education for this class.

Completely failed to prepare students for the tests. There was a near riot after the midterm because he had said he would give ALL necessary equations, but then left off equations that were needed and refused to give them when asked. He even gave a student a wrong equation. Didn't return homework until the last day of class so you didn't know if you were doing things right the whole quarter. Students were asking what was going to be on the final and how to study for it and he was extremely evasive. He did not want to help students at all because he just doesn't care. Worst professor in the IME department. Yes, even worse than Yang.
