ES 321 Dr. Donna Langston Native American Cultural Images was an enjoyable class for the most part until it came to grading. The course syllabus is very vague and includes little or no criteria in regards to Dr. Langston's expectations on course projects. Projects were just simply assigned and rarely explained. When expressing my concerns about what the grading criteria was for a specific project after receiving an average grade, her only answer was that "If you could have seen the other 35 papers in the class, you would have then understood why you received the grade you did." I am sorry, no student is ever given the chance to compare themselves to other's work and besides...who wants to. I do my projects for myself only, I don't focus on comparing my work with other students. Student work should be judged on an individual basis, not on how our work compared to other students. That is no basis for grading. I am graduating senior, and not once in my college career have I been told that is how students are graded in college. All of her feedback on my class projects was very positive, but did not in any way correlate to grades given on the projects. I never asked for my grades to be changed on any project...all I wanted was to be given sincere feedback on my work (instead of good, great, nice analysis), as to why I received the grade I did. In the end she told me that "she was sorry I was only used to receiving "A's" in all of my classes on all my papers, sometimes that can't happen." I never once said that to her, or asked for a grade to be changed to an "A"...all I wanted was FEEDBACK! I am disappointed with this class, because I put a lot of heart, thought and passion into it. When I confronted Dr. Langston in a mature and sincere manner, I was shot down with heated responses, fictional statements and un-answered questions. I am disappointed in Dr. Langston, for a person who seemed to be such a strong, caring and vocal American Indian advocate, she sure doesn't respect, or listen to students when they respectfully confront her. If you take this class, I wish you luck on trying to receive any true feedback on your work. In the end I wish I would have never confronted her, because I believe it lead to a subjective altering of my grade. Good Luck!
