Epperson, Doug  

I had Dr. Epperson for 131 lecture and lab and he was definitely one the easiest professors to understand. He explains things clearly, helps you if you need it and is a great guy to talk to. He gives decent curves and rarely fails people on their tests. His grading policy is like this: you have three mid-terms worth 60% and the final worth 40%. Homework is optional but I would definitely recommend doing it, it you to understand the material and if you do most of it he'll boost your grade a little bit. Anyway, if you can him definely do, you won't regret it.

His lectures are not hard to follow, and he has a huge curve. Get him for lab as well, the longest I was in there was a little over an hour.

Epperson, aka Silent Bob, is pretty cool. Nice guy that is laid back and loves his phyics. He gives a lot of partial credit of tests and gives HUGE curve.

Epperson was a great teacher. His class was a little on the boring side but it wont put you to sleep. The class isnt very hard mainly because he explains things very clearly and really teaches you how to do physics. I thought that our tests were easy but then i looked at the tests of people in my dorm and eppersons were as hard or even harder. He has a really nice curve but if you pay attention you shouldnt even need it. id take him again

Excellent lectures that were interesting and easy to follow. Epperson presents ideas with real examples and if anyone is having problems with the concepts he'll explain it in another way to try to help. His demo's are always fun even when he does "the most boring physics demo you'll ever see." Tests are from the homework with expanded ideas and he always goes over all the material on a test before in class in detail. Excellent professor.

Dr. Epperson can be a great help to those who don't know physics at all. I had no background in physics and he was able to help me a lot. Granted, his lectures reminded me of the absent minded professor (ie. no organization at all). However, if you take the time to visit him in his office he can be of great help. That's where I learned all my physics, not in lecture, but his lab and office where he can help you one on one.

I'd recommend Professor Epperson to a friend for sure. He seemed to make the class much more simplified than other professors (or what I've heard of them), yet when comparing problems assigned on HW, they were tougher! Homework wasn't due, though, so don't worry. But I'd suggest doing it anyway. The tests weren't too bad. He always had a page of conceptual questions (I think every point I missed but ONE was on these!) but they weren't difficult if you're a normal person (I'm not). Just keep up w/ homework, and although he's a bit dry, try and get to the classes b/c you'll soon find out, if you don't already know, that the book is helpless. Don't bother reading unless you're really stuck. Take him! He's a nice guy and great in office hours, too.

Epperson's class was really easy, he just does example problems for all of every lecture, you don't learn anything about theory, but if you can crank out example problems like he did in class you are way ahead of the game. I didn't do a single homework problem, only the review sheets he would give before each midterm and I got an A- in the class.

Professor Epperson is a great professor. His tests arent too hard if you study for them and his curve is big. Take Epperson if you really want to understand physics and if you enjoy a professor who is not into physics more than his right/left hand. Most professors in the physics department are too into the subject and dont help you at all. Epperson was great and he made learning physics easy. TAKE HIM!!!!!

Professor Epperson was great. I took physics in high school and left class at the end of the year wondering why i wasted my time. With Epperson, I never felt like I didn't get a good explanation of the topic. On the first midterm I didn't even study and I got a B+. I didn't study for the second one either and got an A. The only problem came when his wife had a baby and we didn't have a lecture for like 2 weeks. We had a midterm right after and I got a D. I am also pretty sure I failed the final but somehow I pulled off a B- in the class. I think he weights lab grade a lot. Epperson was really good, do the homework, and go to office hours and you will do fine.

Reall nice guy. You should take him! He is a little disorganized for lectures but NO HMWK and really Easy Exams.

Is he nice? Yes. Does he know his physics? Yes. Does he curve? Yes. Good in office hours? Yes. Epperson's lectures consist of introducing the material (maybe a little bit of explanation and definitions that he writes out) and examples. The examples really help a lot because you get to "see the physics in action." I'm not sure if it started from the beginning, but there was a point (maybe it was Newton's 2nd law) where he wrote down steps to attack a problem. It was a "formulated" approach and was quite helpful. I'm not sure if all physics professors do that...but he did. I would say that he is pretty good at explaining the material, but if you ever need extra help you can always ask questions (in or out of lecture). He seems to be a really nice guy that won't make you feel dumnb. He does assign homework problems, but it's not collected. I suggest you do them though. The solutions are posted online by him, so you can check your answers. Also, the solutions are usually "FULL" solutions too (meaning, you can see how he got the answer). There were 3 midterms and 1 midterm/final. The midterms usually consist of 1 conceptual page (where he just tested you on the concepts, the more basic things, to check your understanding) and 2 actual problems. Each midterm was worth 60 points (I think) and the final was 120. Then again it might be the 4th midterm is 60 and the final was 60 too. Okay, not sure. *Note: the rest of this evaluation may be biased because I have taken physics in high school* The midterms sort of varied when I took him. The first was a little bit above medium. The second was a little bit below medium. The third was medium. The 4th and final were medium. And, that's all folks.

He was an alright teacher. He knows how to relate the information to his students but does not really care if you get it or not. Hes okay if you ask me. Id take him again. Hes the only physics teacher Ive ever had so I really dont have much to compare him to.

Dr. E is the best physics teacher Cal Poly has to offer. He is helpful and has a big heart. He will always help you in his office. He won't explain problems to you, but make you work it out with his assistance so you have a greater understanding. Sometimes his tests are tough but it usually works out you that you will do better then you imagined on them (curve). Sometimes he is a little disorganized (messy office, and lecture doesn't seem entirely planed out.) But this does not detract from his teaching because he is soo intelligent he will pick out random book problems and just work them out for you in class. He likes to gives you a good idea about what is on most of the exams also, excluding his random conceptual problems he gives, which are not hard if you pay attention in lecture.

Professor Epperson has to be one of the best teachers ever. He takes his time and REALLY care about his students. Come to his office hours and he's willing to help you 110%. However, there is a WARNING: 1) This quarter, he has been absent for a total of 7 times causing us, PHYS 131, to fall behind about two chapters jeopardizing for 132 and 133. 2) He jumps around in the book so if you ask your friends from other PHYS 131, you won't likely get help. 3) His lectures are dry but not as dry as other teachers. Overall, take him ... if he doesn't get laid off because of budget cuts.

HE IS LEAVING. That's so unforunate becuase he's one of the greatest teachers of all time. Overall, he's one of the best Physics teachers and teaches you "to the point." Cal Poly will miss him.

Take this guy! he is very fair in his grading and tells you EXACTLY what to expect on the tests. Your grade is based of 3 tests and a final. Use his internet resources, the sample problems are exactly the ones on the test with different numbers. his lectures can get dull and long, but if you manage to pay attention the whole time it is worth your while.

A wonderful professor that is willing to help above and beyond the call of duty. He will be missed, but good luck to him with his new family.

I would recommend his for lab and lecture. He is a solid teacher. He is also a very nice person to approach and is willing to help you.

Dr. Epperson is by far the easiest physics prof. at this university. If you listen to his lectures, you'll get everything you need to ace the exams- there are no surprises and no difficult questions. He even gives hints during the exam! Also, you can get a problem totally wrong, but if you convey the steps you took and they make any sense at all, you get credit. Even if you just write down important related concepts, without applying them to the problem, you'll get a large chunk of the points. So even if you're totally stuck, write down something- anything! Even the right hand rule will help. He's also a nice guy and very helpful. There's no homework and the exams are usually only 2-3 problems long with multiple parts each. Before each test, he gives a full review and tells you exactly what will be on it. I do mean EXACTLY. All you have to do to get an A is come to lecture regularly.

Like everyone else said, he's a great teacher. As long as you show that you are trying and go into his office hours you'll do fine. He'll really help you out if you go into his O-hours right before a midterm or final--he breaks everything down and tells you EXACTLY what you need to know to do well on the test. I'd highly recommend him if you have a choice.

Everyone is looking for different things out of a professor as well as the class. Prof. Epperson is the perfect choice if you want minimal work, a huge curve and little knowledge in the subject. If you want to walk away with some clue, take anyone else.

Epperson was by far the best physics professor I had for the Phys-130 series. His lectures covered the essential parts of the material and he never covered the minor details that no one ever cares about. His lectures were very straight forward and if you ever have a question about anything, he will always explain it until you understand. In addition, he is very helpful in office hours and you can tell he actually cares to see that you are trying to learn. The tests were moderately difficult (as all physics tests are in my opinion) but if you do the homework and pay attention to what he says in class, you will be fine.

i took this guy for physics 133. i just picked him randomly cuz i had no idea who any of the teachers were. man, this guy really knows his material. epperson gave me a D, but i deserved it. i hardly went to class, but when i did go, i was very impressed witht the way he handled his lectures. very organized and very articulate. i just wish he could give extra credit or give out candy or something.

Epperson is a genius, he knows physics like the back of his hand. That being said, his lecturing skills are a little weak. Though he presentes the info well, its not even remotely interesting and the examples he gives only teach the concept but don't teach how to apply it. He doesn't do enough examples like the problems in the homework. I would understand the concept but when I got to the homework I was way lost. I needed to go to office hours for most of it where he was very helpful. Before each test he gives examples of the problems that will be on the test. That is very helpful. If you can do the examples, you will do great on the test.

Fuck this guy. Id like to stick my tounge up his ass.
