I thought I would not like this class and was dreading it but actually ended up enjoying it. She is an amazing teacher and especially for this class. Exams were good if you studied the study guide. You do need to go to class there are pop quizzes but they're easy if you looked at the material. Definently a great GE and she is amazing to take it with!!!!!!!!

Dr. Wetzel is the cutest little nugget and ART 111 is a super easy GE. I recommend getting the book b/c she offers extra credit from it (gave me a 107% on midterms). Midterms are vocab and pictures. She gives you a study guide so use Quizlet and print the pictures out to make flash cards. Go to class b/c she takes random attendance quizzes. And, if you do well on the 2 midterms the final is optional!

Wetzel is great. Anyone who does not get an A should not be at cal poly. She is so nice, even when rude students are rowdy and ditch halfway through. Please just show up and shut up to show your appreciation for an easy a.

This professor is so nice and the class is so easy. 5 quizzes and 3 tests, she drops the lowest scoring exam so if you get A's on the first two then you dont have to take the final which is nice. The class can drag on sometimes but overall is a great class! TAKE HER!

Let's be honest, this class is an absolute cake walk. 3 midterms (but really only 2 since you can drop lowest and many people don't take the final), and 10% grade based on 5 random attendance quizzes. The midterms are entirely based on her study guide, and you probably have to spend a couple hours before the test to memorize it and throw it all back up the next day. I really cannot fathom how one could not achieve an A in this class. Even receiving an A- can only be chalked up to laziness. Show up to class, study a couple hours before the midterm. You don't even have to pay attention in class and studying is pure memorization. Take this course, but if you don't get an A take a hard look at the mirror and really evaluate your work ethic because life doesn't get any easier than this class.

Dr. Wetzel is a great professor. She makes Art history really interesting. You have to take quizes and tests that involve a lot of memorization of titles and artists, but it's really not that hard since you see the slides so many times. And I think it's worth it because after the class you'll really be able to flip through any western art history book and name, if not recognize, most of the art. Dr. Wetzel is really friendly too. She felt more like a peer than some of those "high and mighty" professors.

Dr. Wetzel is soo enthusiastic about Art History and it really made a difference for me when I took this class. She gives out study guides and tells you exactly what you need to know before a quiz or midterm. You have 3 quizzes, but she throws out your lowest score, and 3 exams (including the final, which isn't cummulative!). She does take role quite often though so if you take her you're definitely going to have to go to class because otherwise your grade will go down. I really didn't have to read that much out of the book either because she practically goes over everything in her lectures, so that was very nice. So if you are not an artist, like me, and need to take an Art GE definitely take Art History with Wetzel!

She is a cool teacher. She is fun, energetic and interesting. We looked at slides every day, which was so much more interesting than taking straight notes. She knew a lot about the subject and enjoys what she is talking about. Very nice teacher and the quizzes and tests weren't too hard. great class

Professor Wetzel is an outstanding teacher. Before the first day of History of Western Art (Art 112) I thought the class was gonna be boring but after about 10 mins of lecture, I was interested. Wetzel knows her material extremely well, is really organized and keeps the attention of the students by humor. Grade is determined by 3 slide quizes (drop the lowest) and 2 midterms and a final (multiple choice and slide identification. All in all, it was a great class!

Jean is an arrogent woman(if you want to call her that) that has a very bad attitude towards her students. She does not know how to teach well at all. She does not make class interesting at all. On average, half of the class slept. If at all possible, do not take this lady for a class or you will regret it!!!!!!!

Excellent prof and class as GE's go. A few midterms, quizzes, and final are all you have to do. I'm not into art, but she shows you its more then just some drawing by a guy 500 years ago. Also, if u have problems with nude ppl or jesus, dont take this class

This is the first time I've commented on polyratings, but I thought this was important. Wetzel frustrated me so much as a hopeful student, I love art history but her lectures were mostly boring and I slept or missed class a lot and just caught up by studying slides and notecards really well. My pet peeve is when a teacher takes it personally when you miss class, and she is EXTREME in this - I made the personal choice to get a B- by not coming to class and not studying as hard as I could, especially after my interest in her lectures has completely died, but because she was offended she refused to talk to me about knocking my participation points down more than her syllabus suggested and gave me a C. One of the worst experiences I've had speaking with an unreasonable professor, and I definitely won't be taking classes with her ever again.

Dr Wetzel presents her material in an enthusiastic manner. She always wears an "archaic smile" on her face. Jean's lectures provide you with the information you need to do well on her quizzes. To do better than average on her midterm/final you better read the book and learn the cultural stuff and the terms. Dr Wetzel's class would be better if it were offered at a different time. It is hard to sit in the dark looking at 30 slides from 4-6p. If Art History is your forte, by all means take Art 211/212 with Jean Wetzel.

Dr. Wetzel is so cute. She's so little..and she sits crosslegged on the front desk and stuff while she teaches. One time we were being a little chatty so she did the splits to get our attention. But anyway, the class is really easy and straightforward if you're willing to put in the study time...pretty much rote memorization. She drops one midterm/final grade and one quiz grade...flashcards are definitely a good idea. Lectures can get a little boring (esp at 7am, ugh) but she knows her stuff well.

Dr. Wetzel is extremly knowledgable in the subjects she teaches, and its possible to sucseed in the class without even reading the text, but the material is presented in a conventional way and there is absoultly no challenge or emphasis put into the class.

Wetzel is the best professor I've had at Poly! I thought I was going to hate art history, but she made it really fun and easy to learn. She is very sweet and her tests are really easy as long as you make notecards and memorize everything on the study guide. I've taken three classes with her and I'm about to take a fourth! I STRONGLY RECOMMEND WTZEL!!!

Fabulous. Well versed in topics discussed, and willing to do a bit of research in the areas where questions arise. Animated teacher with a sense of humor and an obvious interest in her students. I'd recommend her without a second thought.

In a highly engaging and intellectually stimulating class, Wetzel somehow managed to change our classes perspective on what it means to be a feminist. She is not angry or aggressive, yet she is strong and assertive. I think I learned more in her class than I have in almost any other I have taken simply because she made it interesting.

I LOVE WETZEL. I took this class for my WGS minor and it was so easy. She's a really easy grader, I got a 96% on the midterm and a 98% on my final research paper. The only thing that brought my grade down to an A- was participation, make sure you not only go to class but participate in the discussion!

i feel that Ms. Wetzel was a great teacher. Most of the time we watched slides, but she gives us an outline beforehand and puts stars next to the ones that are going to be tested. Her quizzes are easy if you study early, not at the last minute. You will know exactly what you will be tested on as well. There is 1 midterm and you need to know the definitions on top of the outlines she hands out. Easy to follow class. If you are good at memorizing, you will do fine in this class. But if you miss a lecture, you will need to read the book. I never even bought the book, but I went to all the lectures and i got an A.

Wetzel is really one of the kindest and understanding professors out there. She is extremely knowledgeable about asian art history but doesn't force feed it. Instead she shows slides but at a very calming pace so that you just kind of absorb the material. I had a really heavy quarter Fall 2014 but Wetzel's was the only class where I could relax. NONE of the material is going to be surprising, she literally stars what slide images will be on the quizzes/exams and everything else is on the study guides that she posts online Polylearn. Wetzel is retired but teaches because she loves to and it really shows. Her classes fill up fast during registration for good reasons.

Great teacher. buddhist art is a fairly interesting class. the material at first is pretty cool and i got really into it, but then it got old and i wasnt interested anymore. I really recommend this teacher though. She is a really smart woman and she presents all the material really well. Her tests are easy and the final project was hella easy too. Take her if you want an easy A or B and you want to learn a lot about art.

-clear, interesting lectures, she tells you exactly what to study -3 slide quizzes- drops the lowest one - final project rather than final- like art project -1 midterm, similar to the slide quizzes - you have to show up to every class because she takes roll

She is an amazing teacher! She is very knowledgeable in the material (this class was Buddhist Art) and she explains everything very well. The class website has all the materials needed to succeed in the class. There are a midterm and final exam, with one essay question, 20 multiple choice and 20 questions on slides... very easy questions if you understand the material. She tends to pick things that are interesting and sticks in the students minds. There are also 3 short 2-3 page papers in the class, but she only takes your two highest grades (and make sure you proof read and there are absolutely NO mistakes at all cause you will not get an A!) There are also 3 slide quizzes, but again she only counts the highest 2 scores. I would recommend this class, it is a very easy \"A\"

I definitely have no regrets taking this class to fulfill my C4. Dr. Wetzel is nice, presents the material extremely clearly, and grades fairly. Basically, if you go to class and fill out the study guides you will get a good grade. I only skimmed the readings. I would recommend making flash cards for the slide ID (she has all the pictures on her website so you can print them right onto cards). The class consists of a midterm, a non-cumulative final, 3 quizzes (she drops your lowest score), and 2 short papers based on readings. The exams are slide identification, some short answers, some mult. choice, and an essay (all right off the study guides). Some of the material got a bit repetitive, but considering the other C4 options this class was great.

She is an amazing teacher. She is so nice and very friendly, always smiling. I hate it when teachers are just as bored in class as i am. But she really understands students and she always keeps our best interests in mind. The class was a normal level of difficulty, what you would expect at Cal Poly. The only hard thing is that all the artists names are in Chinese, and that's hard to remember how to spell and it's like learning a whole new language. But Jean is the bestest! She even cancelled class twice, just because we were ahead of schedule in the syllabus. 2 papers under 4 pages, 1 midterm, 1 final. Super easy. Take it. You will learn an appreciation for Asian art, which American's don't have.

First of all, this is a review for ART 318, Chinese Painting, NOT Buddhist Art, even though they are identified with the same course number. The courses I've heard, while taught in a similar fashion, cover different topics in art history. To summarize, Dr. Wetzel was a so-so professor. I loved how enthusiastic she was about the material; on the other hand I felt she didn't take our specific class seriously enough coming from an academic perspective. The class is composed of 2 papers, both about 3 pages long double-spaced (meaning easy), 2 tests, which were actually somewhat challenging if you're not good at rote memorization (like me), and several quizzes which were 5 questions long each (also easy). For example, one of the papers was to compare and contrast a painting covered in class of your choice. I found her enthusiasm amusing in one of her comments she left on my graded paper: “It's fun, isn't it?” I'm not an art enthusiast, but I'm glad we had a teacher who cared! Most of the class revolves around analyzing many different works of art from ancient China. Essentially every lecture is composed of a powerpoint presentation with each slide containing a painting that she discusses in-depth. Ok, so the cons. One problem I had was that the class was held in the morning, and since I find analyzing art to be in general boring, I found myself starting to doze off frequently. We did have one class period when we went to another room to “paint” our own ancient Chinese painting, but that was pretty much it in terms of “diversity” related to how the class was taught. I felt she could liven it up a bit with more than just her slides. Above I mention that she didn't take the class “seriously”. For instance, we had a couple days that she canceled. One was for a good reason – she was sick that day. The other, however, was because she “wanted” to go attend a faculty meeting of sorts. She asked us if we wanted to meet that day, and what do you think our obvious answer was? I personally feel that professors should dedicate the most time to their students, whether we like it or not (of course we default to “not” liking it), and throughout the quarter I couldn't help but feel she was at times teaching a too-easy class, or wanted more time to do other things outside of class. At the beginning of the quarter she complained about how long it took her to grade the two 3 page double-spaced papers we had to write, which is ridiculous; I had another class last quarter where everyone had to write a 15 page single-spaced paper (CSC 300) – our professor for that class literally spent weeks, spending many hours of each day to get through everyone's papers. At times it seemed there was this awkward disconnect in non-verbal communication between her and us, the students. As the students, we understood what the truth and reality were of the “mood” and “attitude” inside the class, but it seemed she didn't. It's just that I felt the way the class was handled was not what one would expect from an upper division level course. If you're good at memorizing stuff like a painting's artist, title, significance of the piece, etc., and are looking for an easy A, this is the class for you. The assigned reading outside of class can be accomplished just by skimming the text, and with that you should be successful on the quizzes. If you like Asian art topics in history, you'll also enjoy this class, but not all teachers are perfect, and Dr. Wetzel definitely isn't.

Coming into this class I was completely dreading it because I am not really interested in Asian art, or art in general. I was really just taking it to meat the C4 requirement. That being said, the class was really not that bad, and I ended up actually enjoying it. Jean is not only fun and enthusiastic, she is also a great teacher. I would say she's one of my favorite teachers I've had at Cal Poly. The lectures can get pretty boring but if you memorize the things she tells you the tests are an easy A. You will have to do 2 papers but they are only 3 to 4 pages and they are pretty general and easy. From what I've heard other C4 classes can be really time consuming and awful... Don't do it. Take Asian art. Jean is the best.

This is one of the easiest GEs I've ever taken. But I still found it fulfilling. Dr. Wetzel is a nice professor who doesn't force students to break their back for this course. Most of your grade is based on tests, which are easier than most tests I've taken at Cal Poly.
