Dr. Tietje is an excellent professor. He requires a lot from his students but in the end it is very rewarding. He makes learning very interesting and fun by offering real life examples in class and being very open to suggestions. Go to his office hours. He's a lot of fun to talk to outside of class work if you're interested in getting to know an awesome professor on a more "real-life" scale. He's a tough grader and if you're thinking about taking him be sure you've taken Engl. 218 so you know how to write a memo and a report. Good luck!!!

Dr. Tietje knows his stuff, that's for sure. If you're going to take Marketing from him, be ready to work! I put more work into this one 4 unit class than I usually do into 2 or 3 classes combined in a normal quarter. I will admit that I learned a lot, but the amount of work assigned was somewhat unreasonable for the grade I earned. He doesn't grade on a curve, so even though I had the highest grade in the class, it was still only a B+. For example, one exercise we did, the class average was in the D/F range, but he still didn't curve it. Overall - he knows his stuff, which makes it interesting. But be warned - if you don't want to work your butt off, don't plan on getting any kind of a good grade.

Brian was an qwesome teacher. he has a great sense of humor and is very knowledgable. Class was pretty cool considering that we could talk shit and have a couple laughs with him. He knows a lot about the business world and i learned a hell of alot in his class. In the summer quarter we did this marketing game simulation that was pretty cool because it was a "real life simulation" of marketing as we competed against other classmates. Yes he requires alot of work but it isnt that bad because your actually learning something that is benificial. Also, for all of you chumps who complained to the dean that tietje was too sarcastic, you all are a bunch of retards who got your asses kicked too much in high school! This guy is not sarcastic at all. He just likes to have a good class enviornment that is somewhat enjoyable.

Dr. Tietje may come off as kind of a hard nose at first, but let me assure you this is not the case. True, he does assign a hefty work load, but it's not busy work, rather the assignments help you to sharpen your skills. Personally my technical writing skills improved 100% during the quarter. Tietje makes class enjoyable and relates well to students, on top of that he's a really cool guy, friendly both inside and out side of class. Honestly I liked this guy so much I contemplated inviting him to go to happy hour many times with my buddies and I. Don't get me wrong I worked my ass off for a B, but the 346 class I took from him was possibly the most enjoyable class I've had at Poly yet. I highly reccomend getting into one of his classes, if you can hang, you'll learn.

First of allyou do not really need to subscribe to the WSJ just ask one of your group members to print out the occasional articles for you, otherwise you will have a ridiculous ammount of newspapers piles at your house that you will neevr even take out of the plastic. The marketing game is stupid, there is no logical formula to win so dont get discouraged when your team comes in last. Brian can be a dick head at times and often will make fun of students in class, especially the ones who do not speak english and dont quite understand what he is saying. he is actually really funny, be sure to go to class! i would have gotten a b if i had more participation points.

Tietje is a cool teacher. He is easy to understand when he lectures. The lectures are nothing that can't be read in the book. There are two tests which are only each 19% of your grade. They are pretty hard. Then there is a marketing game project. THis is worth 150 pts with a group. Do good on it. He doesn't explain it very well. Then he gives seven quizes and drops the lowest two. I would recommend him.

Dr. Tietje will turn you on to Marketing. If you want to be a Marketing student, why wouldn't you take him? Yes, it's a lot of work (so are the rest of your Marketing classes, so get used to it). If you're not a Marketing student, please don't take him, you're using up a perfectly good space for a Marketing student! He TEACHES you, he learns your name, he cares about his students. That's pretty damn cool. He's won awards two years in a row for a REASON, AMA loves him for a REASON, and all of his Marketing students come away loving him (at least, that's all I ever hear from people). Yes, you should work hard, but the harder you work, the more rewarding this class will be. He's an INTERESTING and GOOD professor. His lectures aren't boring and he does such an excellent job. I've never had a better Business Professor.

I didn't find him particularly funny or approachable. He often made comments about all the big companies he use to work for, which left me wondering why he was even teaching. Going to class was a waste of time because he didn't add anything new, helpful, or important to the powerpoint slides. If you memorize the text book, you'll do fine on the tests. You better hope you get a good group because most of your grade depends on it.

If you're considering a marketing concentration or are really interested in learning the material... take Dr. Tietje. He is more or less arrogant for a reason... he knows his stuff and kicks ass at presenting it to you. His tests are fair and there are reading quizes every once and awhile that are cake if you even the least bit "marketing inclined" - reading optional (read chapter summaries though). He drops your two lowest quiz scores too. Finally, Tietje isn't the 346 prof. for you if you're not interested in learning - if you're willing to sac up and take a challenge ... take Tietje b/c you'll get a lot out.

Oh man, this guy is a jerk when it comes to grading. He doesn't specify what you did correct or incorrect, he just marks you down. I feel as if i learned a great deal, but i was deserving of a much better grade. He didnt give out one 'A' in the class, just A-'s. No curve, and only 10 pts extra(out of 400) to compensate for a shitty midterm class avg. Tietje, i know you're reading this, so start giving students feedback or start to curve!

Mr. Tietje is histerical. I've never had a class at poly that I laughed so much in. He always lets us out early and makes class fun. His tests are ridiculously difficult. DONT JUST STUDY THE BOLD WORDS FOR HIS TESTS, HE ONLY PUTS LIKE TWO ON THEM. He mostly puts random stuff that you would have to catch while CAREFULLY READING and lots of stuff from lecture. He also tests your understanding of definitions, NOT WHICH DEFINITION IS RIGHT. His quizes are cake if you read. I read and highlighted and then went over the material before the quiz and got A's and B's. Go to his office hours and have him review all your reports.

DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. The class was so poorly taught and so vague that many students were left wondering what it was we spent the day talking about. His lectures would sometimes stop and he would tell us to go to the computer lab and prepare some presentation or report for him to criticize and shoot down without ever having given us proper instructions. He is an arrogant asshole. My final paper I submitted the wrong document and instead of letting me send in the correct one he went ahead and gave me a 0 on that assignment dropping me from a solid B to a C. Avoid him like the Plague, lets get teachers like this who don't seem to care about students learning something out of Cal Poly don't sign up for his classes. If he leaves it will help other students in the future to avoid a horrible experience.

Dr. Tietje is one of the worst business professors I have had. His powerpoints come straight from the book, so attending his lectures is basically pointless. Except you have to show up to class everyday because of the almost daily quizzes and in class exercises. The class wouldn't have been too horrible though had he cared more about his students. However, he discourages emails and had only one office hour per week. He was also extremely unflexible. If you are 2 seconds late to one of his quizzes he doesn't allow you to take it, and he offers no way to make it up. There are much better teachers to take for marketing than this guy.

I would not recommend taking this guy. He seems really nice at first, but his sense of humor is very one way and he will shoot you down for doing anything wrong. If you do well in the game, you will do well in the class. The write ups are easy, the quizzes are really easy, overall it is a pretty easy class, he just isn't nice and the lectures are beyond boring and don't help anything.

During my time at Cal Poly SLO I took several different classes with Dr. Tietje and was always very pleased with his level of competency in the domain as well as his level of interest in the individual student's success. He is not, however, one to muck about with half-assed attempts at being a student. Of all the Poly teachers I learned under (5 years, 6 different majors), Dr. Tietje ranks in my top three greatest teachers. Take a class with Dr. Tietje if you wish to be great and don't mind a challenge. Don't take him if you do not wish to be challenged.

Dr. Tietje is the shiz. He has experience in marketing so he really knows what he is talking about. He is fair in his grading, and he will teach you some real life helpful information. Plus he has a hybrid format for this class where you only have to attend one day a week.

This class was in hybrid format so we only went one day a week. It was really confusing at first but once you figure out what he wants its not bad. Just stay on top of things from the beginning and you should be fine. He can seem like a jackass sometimes but overall its not too bad. Be CONCISE! he likes papers that are concise and too the point. the class was kinda a lot of work but i think that was because of the hybrid format.

Mixed reviews on Tietje. Really liked him at first and was excited for the class. Turned out to be not as nice as I thought. Did not give clear instructions (he claims like a boss would) but docks points like he gave clear instructions. I ended up with an A, somehow. I would think twice before taking him, if you need clear instructions and stuff, try another teacher

Most arrogant teacher I had in all of college. His ego serves to keep himself employed, because if you look at his credentials you will discover he is purely academic and spent a minuscule amount of time in the real world before going right back in to academia to teach. He doesn't have enough real world experience to be taken seriously, and I believe he knows this fatal flaw and thus has a massive ego to try to deflect this criticism from ever surfacing. I changed my major because of this teacher. I couldn't believe I was paying for this at Cal Poly, which is a great school but unfortunately has been hoodwinked by this guy.

Dr. Tietje is an arrogant asshole. He is a very tough grader and unclear about what he is looking for. There are a few things he looks for and if you don't have them he marks you down huge. He is always complaing about students not going to class and not giving a good ewffort but he fails to realize it is up to the professor to bring out the best in students. He will give you like 12 articles to read and then give you a pop quiz or tell you he'll have a quiz on something ans then it will be on something else. He also does not give A's. I would not recommend Tietje, he's a bitch.

This is what he said once during lecture "Hell, if nothing else works out for you in the real world, you could just become a marketing professor!" That pretty much says it all. The guy just didnt make it out there so he became a professor. It is not that hard to teach marketing considering that most of it is really intuitive. Tietje however manages to leave students completely at sea with the assignments he gives by not being clear at all about what he is looking for in the answer. I had him for 418 as well (unfortunately) and some of the things I did for my assignments in that class got me C's while the exact same things got me A's in 419! He just grades based on what kind of mood he is in and there is no real consistency to his grading. Overall, a worthless fuck that should just be a stay home dad and I would avoid his sorry ass at all costs. But if you do have to take him, just be ready for a lot of frustation. And also in 419, he has no fucking clue about what he is doing. Some of the better things I learnt in the class were from other students teaching me! On the positive side though, SOME of his jokes are alright but thats about it.

I took Dr. Tietje twice and enjoyed both of his classes. His workload is heavy but he warns you on the first day of class so nobody should be complaining. A suggestion would be to do all the reading and participate in class. The case studies are hard at first but get easier as the quarter goes along. STUDY HARD for the final because it involves the exact questions from the case study but he grades it difficulty because we have gone through it once. Overall his class isn't hard if you put forth effort

Just curious why Tietje gets paid? He has us make our own quizes, grade each others midterms, present in class material that he should be presenting, leaves early because he has to settle various legal disputes. The amount of time that I wasted in class doing work he is paid to do was probably at least 10 hours. And in a stunning act of hypocrisy he gets upset if you don't attend class so that you can do HIS work for him. AS A WHOLE A POMPOUS ASS.

Tietje, you useless, useless bastard. My favorite tietje story goes as follows. One day, he taught us how to do a problem. We all did that same problem on the test exactly how he taught us. The day after the test, he described how to do the problem as he previously had. The next day, he said he had taught us to do teh problem the wrong way, and we all got the problem wrong. Also, the midterm he gave us was all advanced statistics.. yet, he forbade us to ask him his help. "I'm not a statistics professor!" he would claim. The most memorable quote from him is this: "Men marry women because they hope they won't change. Women marry men because they hope they will." Decide for yourself if you want to take a class from Tietje.

The best advice I can give is to utilize his office hours. He's pretty vague in class lots of times, which can be frustrating, but if your group is proactive about the case studies and presents a preliminary plan, then one person goes to his office hours and goes through it with him, he'll tell you EXACTLY what he wants... aka good grade... for the most part. His grading can sometimes seem a bit weird. The class is sort of hard, but I barely did the reading and got an A-. If you just plan to give Tietje what Tietje wants, (which may require clarification via office hours) then you'll do fine without an excessive amount of work.

Take Tietje. He (sort of) knows what he is doing in the class now. Don't depend on him to relearn Stats as you'll only get confused. You'll use the analysis in every other marketing class you'll take. Oh, and he is wowed by graphics. Write a decent paper and do amazing graphic layout = good grade.

Okay, I do not know what all these other people are complaining about! I was freaked out about taking Tietje for Bus 450 bc I heard how hard it was and how much work there would be. Are you kidding me! His quizzes are sooo easy! Just skim through some crap and you've got an A! I've got two more weeks left of this class and I've got an A right now. He clearly explains what he wants out of you and no, this class does not take out extreme amounts of your time. I have put minimal effort into the projects, just doing what is expected out of me and I'm maintaining an A in the class. Yes, sometimes he's a bit anal and a little obsessive about things, but come on! Some of the stuff is actually fun and you get to be creative. And he's really funny! You have got to be a complete moron to not get at least a B in this class! I am so glad I decided to stick with this class bc I enjoy it! All you do is put together an IMC plan for an actual company. Be wise with which company you want to work with though cuz some will be harder than others to develop and implement a plan for. All you need is a little bit of creativity, that's all! Also be wise with who you pick to work with or you'll be the editor of everything turned in, rewriting people's parts cuz they're morons and don't know how to do anything! All in all, this class takes a lot less effort than Bus 346 or say Bus 448. And there are no tests! What more can you ask for?
