Paul Phillips is possibly the best teacher I've had at Cal Poly. Scratch that, he IS the best teacher I've had at Cal Poly, and my roommate who also had the class agrees. He seems more interested in having you learn the material than just challenging you with really hard tests. Three tests, with a final that wasn't cumulative for us, but seems like it may be depending on how the class does. No homework really (just reading) and no quizzes. He grades on class participation as well as on the tests, which can really only be a good thing. It's a class you won't mind participating in, and even if you don't ever raise your hand he will know your name and get to you eventually for a case reading. Before each test he'll tell you exactly what's on it. After the tests he'll go over every question and throw out any that weren't well written or that weren't covered in class. I believe he only teaches during the Fall quarter because he's also a practicing attorney, so you may miss out, but TRUST me, you won't regret taking the class. If you have any other questions, email me at bhuntington@charter.net (current as of 02-26-01 and hopefully good through 2002).

Mr. Phillips is one of the best teachers that i have taken for any course. He presents the material very well and makes this subject very interesting. The case studies and class participation are fun and help you earn credit for going to class, altough he doesn't take roll(which rocks because he won't dock you for not showing up). He is a great teacher and really knows his stuff because he is a lawyer that works right downtown slo, so if you need a lawyer he's your man! Take this class you won't regret it!!!!

Professor Phillips was arguably the best professor I have ever had at Poly. He presents material clearly and in a way conducive to retention. He learns all the students names and will remember you. He is a down to earth guy who relates well to students. Take this professor for any class possible!

This guys is GOD! talk about a teacher who knows what students go through. he is very reasonable about greade, tells you everything that is going to be on the midterm. the man holds it in front of him the day before the midterm and basically goes over every question and he doesn't trick you with any questions. if thats not good enough for ya, the day after the midterm, the whole class is allowed to argue the questions they feel weren't "fair". and i mean he would give away points to the whole class for mispelling "has". Definitely take him!!!

Professor Phillips' class was horrible. I went to class everyday, read the book, studied for hours before the midterms and still got D's. It could just have been me, but 17 people got F's on the second midterm, so I'm guessing I am some what correct. Class involved no assignments, just reading and studying. During the whole quarter you have no idea how he grades, what percent anything is, if he is curving at all, and or what you have in the class. Did pass me, but wouldn't recommend.

He is a very good teacher, who make the lecture interesting. You have to show up for class and read the book( just skim it) and read his lecture notes. His tests aren't that hard if you really study for his tests. The reason that half the class failed the second midterm was because in that test alone he wanted to try something else. But usually his tests are straightforward. Trust me, he is a very good teacher and you are lucky if you are in his class. Expect an B or A. I really dont' know how people can get C or below.

Phillips likes to talk a lot. Class consists mostly of him using PowerPoint and talking the whole period. He occasionally picks on people to answer case studies. There are no assignments. Just 3 midterms with no final. He is very vague about grading. You will have no clue what you have in the class until the end. Overall the class seems easy because I think he gives out a lot of As.

He's a pretty awesome guy.. I really thought I got an A in the class... got a B+ instead. Oh well... lectures on PPT... 3 midterms.. one of which is the final... that and attendance makes the grade... he randomly calls on people to ask little things about readings... just read the first 2 pages and the case studies... Also, my only complaint is that he has a very lawyer approach to answering questions and concerns with his class... kinda funny and irritating...

This class is very straight-forward. If you study the lecture notes and read the chapters in the book, you will do fine. On the first exam, you need to know a little bit about current events (like who the chief justice of the supreme court is) and you also need to know specific cases and their outcomes. The second two exams are more hypothetical. Your grade is the average of those 3 exams, which can either be a good thing or a bad thing.

Mr. Phillips was awesome. He is really funny and it is a privilege to have an attorney as a professor. Really interesting course and it he even saved us hundreds on a book. HIGHLY RECOMMEND him. Easy to follow powerpoints and he tells really interesting stories.

Professor Phillips is a GREAT instructor! Sure the class may be a little boring but he does everything possible to help you succeed in his class. Get on his good side, and make sure that you attend class as often as possible and youll end up getting a pretty good grade in the class. He really does want everyone to do as well as they try to do.

phillips is a great teacher. he is there for extra help if you need it. what screwed me over is i didn't study that much on the first test and dug myself into a hole by getting a D on it. there are three tests (and that is your hole grade). if you study and know the material from the powerpoints he gives you, you should do fine. but this class does require studying. if there are review sessions, GOO! even if they are on a friday and it is inconvenient to your thursday night partying, suck it up and go. we went over last years tests during the reviews, and the questions (either exactly, or worded a little bit different) from the review would be right on the test. our final was extremely easy because for the review we went over all 50 questions from last years final, and our final was exactly like the one we looked over.

Phillips is a great teacher. No homework. Three midterms that are very fair and not too hard. 50 multiple questions each. Phillips is very reasonable and sees that if the class is struggling he will eliminate a chapter and focus on the more important ones. Definitely recommend Phillips for business law.

Phillips is a great teacher. Basically this is one of the few teachers where i would say i was fully responsible for my grade. He does a good job of teaching, can answer your questions most of the time with first hand experience from his own cases, and is a cool and funny guy on top of it. He seems like a great guy and is a great teacher

Paul Phillips is one of the most extremely helpful professors that I have ever had. He is very understanding and really cares about how you do in the class. I would recommend him to ANYONE who needs this class. I wish I could have just one more professor like him.

He is just the best instructor I ever had since I started college. The class is pretty boring....but.. not because of him, because of the topic. He tries to make it as interesting as possible and I think he does a really really good job. He is a very very very very easy grader, the hw assigned are fairly easy. The final is non-cummulative. He is a student-friendly professor who understands that we are taking other classes. Great professor, great person....

Paul is awesome. He is the best professor at Cal Poly. His class isn't terribly easy but he gives you pretty much all the answers to the tests so you can't do badly. He is an all around great professor and a great guy.

Phillips rules! If you're like me - sick of teachers who give assloads of hw and quizzes and stress you out to the point that you just memorize, regurg, and forget - then take a class from this guy. As people have said, there isn't much work and the grade's easy to make, but I got much more from the class than that. Experiencing a teacher who's intelligent, thoughtful, encouraging, compassionate, and successful all at the same time is worth the price of admission. Poly needs more role models like this guy. As a bonus, I actually LEARNED some of the concepts we talked about and still remember them long after I finished the class. Rock on Phillips, and thanks.

Professor Phillips is the man! He knows that we have other things going on besides this one class and he teaches accordingly. You learn the most important concepts of 404 and he tells you some good stories along the way. Couldnt recommend a better teacher for this class.

Why can't more teachers and classes follow the same suit as Paul Phillips and Bus 404? I learned more from this class than I have in several of my upper division classes at Cal Poly. Phillips presents his material in a clear and manageable way. JUST DON'T BUY THE BOOK!!!! You NEVER need it and he gives you the Powerpoints and the tests will be directly off the Powerpoints. If you don't get an A in this class and walk away feeling like you have gained some real knowledge than you are just flat out lazy.

If you ever want to take 5 classes, take this one as your 5th one, cause it does not require any work at all. He is one of the best professors at Poly and makes every class interesting with his perspectives and I learned a lot. It is more like a 100 level class and he makes no attempt to deny this. The powerpoints are all that you need to do the 2 multiple choice tests. The first one is literally right off the powerpoints, so just memorize them. The 2nd is about the same. You do need to bring articles that relate to the topic at hand each night and be prepared to discuss them briefly. He then explains how they relate to the chapter we are going over. The book we need to buy is $80 and I can honestly say I could have shared with a friend, as you don't need to read anything (HONESTLY) from it, except for one chapter to write a paper at the end. The final is a 3 page paper on Social Corporate Responsibility, however this changes by the quarter I think. Overall, a excellent teacher with a great funny personality and a really cool class...you gotta take him, all the other 404 teachers are hard

Take Phillips for BUS 404. I don't know why this class is a 400-level class, even Phillips said this class should be a 100-level class. Phillips is a really nice guy and understands students have other obligations in life. This class was really kick back, and the only commitment you put into this class is showing up, brining an article related to the subject matter of that day's lecture, and studying an hour or two before the actual midterm. The midterms are directly off of his powerpoints. I've never taken a more straightorward test in my entire life. All you need are the powerpoint slides. For our final, he had us write a paper on corporate social responsibility which was pretty easy. Because you don't have to put in a lot of time into this class outside of class, make sure you show up and participate. He takes that into consideration big time.

ok i just want to let everyone know that this professor does not deserve such a good rating. yes the class is easy. But that is the only good thing about it. It is definately not a 400 level class and he should be teaching high school. All he does is go over power points from the book and have students read their current events. I fell asleep at least 4 times every class. Anyway i just want people to know that he is not that good of a professor, he is just easy. Keep that in mind if all you care about in college is a good grade.

Total ASSHOLE. He purposely bumped a lot of students down to a B this quarter, so he wouldn't get in trouble with the administration. I was always in class, which seemed like a total waste of time. I had a solid A going into the final and I know my essay wasn't bad enough to warrent a B.

His class was ok, easy, and not too bad to sit through. He likes to talk though, thats alright, he is a lawyer. I dont really know how he grades, but I got an A so dont really care. I think if you show up and participate, and poot some effort into the articles than he gives you an A. I liked him, he's a nice guy...and a good dresser!

This class is cake. 7am may seem kind of early, but I would definitely recommend taking it with Phillips. Don't even bother buying the book, he sums up the material in all of 12-20 slides. His main problem is that he babbles on FOREVER and that it takes him WAY TOO LONG to cover the slides. The 2 midterms are really easy (50 multiple choice questions that come DIRECTLY from the slides .. seriously, he just copies and pastes the sentences) and the final is a joke. There's nightly homework, but it's easy .. just find an article about the chapter and analyze it. This class is basically a 100 level course and I would recommend taking it with a harder course like finance or a concentration course.

Professor Phillips realizes what and who we are... STUDENTS! He knows what material is boring and which isn't and teaches accordingly. A great guy and always willing to help clarify things. Always pay attention to powerpoint as many questions are straight from it. Also, study hard before tests (there is never too much material). He isn't going to find obscure things in the book to quiz you on either. Simply take notes on what he says in class and be ready to recall examples and topics from classroom discussion.

Phillips is an awesome teacher! 2 multiple choice midterms which are straight off his powerpoints and a 25 question multiple choice final on one chapter. You dont have to go everyday to get an A in the class but he takes roll and his lectures are actually interesting and funny. Grades are based on the 3 tests and like 10 current event articles and analysis which are pretty easy. Highly recommend this teacher if you can wake up for his classes they are generally early becauses hes a practicing lawyer

This is a great professor, the class is relativley easy however he presents the material in a interactive way that creates a fun learning atmosphere. The class is based off of in class discussions related to current events. There is hardly any out of class work aside from a current event due almost every class period. The two midterms are easy and directly off of the power point slides (literally memorize the slides).Make sure you go to class and do not fall asleep because a secret part of your grade is how attentive you are and even though he doesnt take role, he will know your name. You really do not need to buy the book, the chapters are long and not very useful as far as the assignments go. So long as you put in 30 minutes to an hour of studying before the midterms and you go to class you get an easy A and learn some interesting stuff at the same time! I definatly recommend this professor.

Professor Phillips is one of the coolest teachers I've ever had. He has an awesome personality which he displays in class. As such, students feel more welcomed and willing to participate in class. This was the most enjoyable 8am class I've seriously ever taken, I was alert 95% of the time because he made it so interesting. Attendance is big in this class, he knows everyone by name so it's hard to skip out or even fall asleep in class. The midterms are very straight forward and he's not out to trick anyone. Overall the class was very enjoyable, I would definitely recommend professor Phillips!

Professor Phillips is a very kind person. He's truly interested in the welfare of his students, and how they're able to take the material and apply it in their life. The only critique I have for him is that he can oftentimes get off topic and his lectures can drag on. With that said, this class is relatively easy, especially for students with some knowledge of how policy is made and how government works.
