I heard coming in to Cal Poly that Mr. Panetta was a really tough ARCH 111 teacher, but I really learned a great deal from his class. I'm an ARCE because I can't draw, but the sketching activities were real learning experiences for me. I've also head that there are other ARCH 111 teachers out there who are too 'artsy,' but that's not the case with Mr. Panetta.

I came into this school unsure of my major decision. Everyone discouraged me into thinkin i would fail out just like everyone else. I took panetta randomly and found his class to be very informtive, fair and fun. He showed us what architecture was all about and made me love spending the extra time on it. He is a great guy and an excellent teacher. Do whatever you can to be in his class, you'll be glad you did

Panetta is a tough teacher that assigns a ton of work, but I'm glad he did. I had arch 111 my first quarter here at Poly, and it really prepared me for future labs. I'm not very good at drawing, but a lot of his assignments really helped me improve a lot.

If you don't like Dan it's because you rely too much on direction and not enough on your own work ethic. The biggest complaints about Dan were unclear due dates and unclear direction but if you did the work when you were supposed to or when he assigned it, rather than do it according to when it's due, you'd never have a problem. Dan would assign things and then have them due accordingly, but sometimes he wouldn't collect it the day he said he would. But he never collected work EARLIER than he assigned it to be due. People would take advantage of the fact that he doesn't collect work on time and then complain when he did. Rediculous. This class requires an initiative to want to work and learn, and his instruction may not have always been clear but it's nothing a question wouldn't clear up. Take Dan. He's hard and different and WAY worth it and I only got a C because I slacked off. Even with my grade he is by far my favorite teacher here at Poly.

Very challenging and time consuming--definitely not the easy way out, but well worth it.

I think Dan is a nice prof. He sorta has this dark sense of humor. He answered all my questions clearly and pretty good about replying emails. Just do your work and turn things in on time and you will be fine. I recommend him for the Arch 124-127 computer classes.

dan and his class ruined my first quarter of college. having never taken a drafting course, which was in no way a prerequisite to this course, i found dan to be a terrible instructor. he didn't teach fundamental principles--he just expected us to know them. his entire grading policy is subjective. basically you get screwed if he doesn't like your designs. the work load was a ton--we were always working on more than one major project. his computer tutorials never answer everyone's questions, and he breezes through them like everyone knows how to use the programs. he acts like architecture should be your whole life. if it's yours, by all means take a class with dan. if you want a life, take someone else. dan's class was boring, and he made little to no effort to spice it up. he's even a big part of the reason why i've decided to change my major.

Dan is the MAN! what can i say this guy is just one heck of a proff. Not only does he really know what he is talking about but he is very concerned with positve learning. I am VERY sad to see him go because I really want to be able to have him around going through the next few years of my Arch education, but i wish you all the luck in the world at Texas Dan!!!

Dan Panetta, you will be missed. You were a wonderful man, a dedicated professor, and a loving friend. His funeral service is on Saturday, March 19th at Wheeler Smith Mortuary on S. Higuera in San Luis Obispo. We would greatly appreciate any students that can appear as teaching was his life and his passion.

I do not at all recommend taking Dan Panetta for any type of architecture class. I believe that he favors certain students and dislikes other ones, or possibly he just dislikes all of us. I feel that I've put more than enough time and effort into every project. I pulled all-nighters; I went into his office hours to ask questions; I did what the syllabus said. But for some of us students, you just can't do right in Panetta's class. He always found enough little mistakes in my projects to give me a low grade, much lower than I expected. In addition to his baised grading policy, he also has a severe attitude problem. I have always been friendly toward him, hoping that he would eventually be nice, but no. He never seems to be in a good mood, he has no patience, and he never smiles. Earlier in the quarter, I registered to take Panetta again next quarter, because although his dislike for me is frustrating, upsetting, and obvious to everyone in our class, I believed that I learned more from him than my previous architecture teacher (I later changed teachers). It is true, he knows a lot about computers and Form Z, so if you want a challenging class rather than an easy one, Panetta might be a good choice. But I felt that my best efforts were never recognized by him, and he always managed to make me feel bad about my projects. That's not the way it should be -- teachers should be encouraging!! Oscar the Grouch definitely is not.

Dan Panetta is a great professor and yes he is big on wanting assignments in on time, but that is only fair. I believe that he does not favor anyone and that he grades extremely fairly. Dan gives consturctive criticism and has a sarcastic dark humor that is appreciated in the classroom, it is refreshing actually. His assignments aren't terribly difficult, just time consuming and if you feel that you don't understand a concept, he is extrememly willing to talk to you during his office hours or during anytime during his day, that he may have free.

i really liked panetta. sure, he's a little dark and tad bit before our time, but he knows architecture. i really enjoyed the assignments. we arch students get draw and play on the computer. he did grade kind of hard, but it just made me want to do better and prove him i was better. he was always available during his office hours and i felt like i got a lot of help from him one-on-one when i had questions.

Dan is a great teacher- at first I thought he was dull and uninterested, but it turns out that he is a very talented teacher. Sometimes he doesn't clarify assignments very well, but he grades fairly. I would recommend him to anybody who wants to learn a lot by working hard.

We're going to miss ya Dan! Dan is a wonderful professor and is a go with the flow kind of guy. He sets the guidelines far enough to get what he wants but gives you enough freedom to let your creative juices flow. I took him all 3 quarters and our class felt like a family, very open and supportive. It was a wonderful learning environment and I feel like I got so much out of that class (even if we ended up getting like no sleep all year because of projects.... gotta love arch)

I had Panetta freshman year for all three quarters and I learned so much! He is a really cool guy that likes to teach. As a senior I still use some of the basics that we learned in the class like photoshop, design layout, thumbnail layouts, sketching, crit skills, etc.
