She is the Marketing concentration dean. So you don't have any options for switching teachers. Thus, you're going to take her. In a nutshell, she is completely unorganized, she speaks softly so you can't hear, and she assumes too much. As with all team classes, you'll likely get team members who's "mom and dad pay for school" and are just lazy. Professor Metcalf barely takes this into account. She'll give you an evaluation at the end of the quarter to rate your teamates, but this doesn't help during the quarter when they simply won't contribute. So expect no support, and if you try to point out problems, expect her to assume it's your fault. She sticks her nose into your personal life and attempts to blame you for your team's problems (even when you present hard evidence to support their laziness). Also, the class in general isn't marketing. It's an innovations class. So if you don't pick a great invention, you'll likely do worse overall in the class. Also, be prepared to understand your invention's technical aspects, despite the fact that these have little to do with marketing. Also, expect repetitive assignments. Therefore, cite your sources the first time so you can find them again... and again... and again. Overall, this was an interesting class and an interesting book (but we NEVER used it in class, and RARELY used it for quizzes). It just needs a lot of refining. My suggestion, act like you're enthusiastic about the class even if your team is terrible, she'll try to pry on your personal life otherwise. An A is definitely achievable if you work really hard. Good luck.

She is very unclear about assignments and what they entail. Expect to ask a lot of questions and seek one-on-one time with her to find out what's required of you for each assignment. She's very nit-picky down to the smallest details (one small spelling error will take you from an A assignment to a B). Be prepared for a team work environment and if you get a crumby group don't expect any help from her. However, the topics are pretty interesting and you have "experts" visit the class, so network with them early on to help with your project. Also, she was fairly flexible with assignment due dates, but expect to do A LOT of work for this class, so you'll need these extended deadlines. She's not the worst teacher, but not the greatest, very scattered, unclear, and at times judgmental.

Awesome teacher, interesting subject. One of the best teachers that I've had here at Poly. Grading was straight-forward and fair. I highly recommend her. She really sparked my interest for the subject and I look forward to taking her for another marketing class.

Avoid Professor Metcalf at all costs!!! I had her for the intro marketing class and she made me hate everything about marketing! There is a stupid group project that lasts the entire quarter where she assigns groups. That project is worth 40% of your grade and it screwed me over because my group got a D! Her tests are pretty easy though and do not help your grade as much as they should. Take any other teacher besides Metcalf for BUS 346!

I thought that I might want to choose marketing as my concentration, but after taking this intro class I have decided not to. She has a lot of experience in the real world, but does a terrible job of explaining concepts and expects students to know what to do when she has never explained an assignment. This class has a ton of group work that is worth almost half of your grade. I would avoid this teacher if possible.

I was going to choose marketing as my concentration but not after taking this class, and definitely not with the possibility of having this teacher again. There\'s a huge group project that is basically your entire grade, and she doesn\'t grade according to what she tells you she\'s looking for. Participation points will get you too, I went to all but one class, answered questions in class, participated in every discussion board, took every survey, and did off campus assignments, only to get a B in participation. Avoid this teacher unless you want a frustrating quarter.

She tends to ramble on in a garrulous manner. Wanna ACE her class? Focus on her lecture slides for the exam, don\'t waste your time on anything not on the slides. She is an inconsistent grader, but if your well spoken you can cajole her to give you a few extra points. Her husband speaks FARSI so you should spark up a conversation about all the Iranian recipe that you know or wish to try.

straight to the point. do not take this professor unless you want to know what marketing actually entails. the project is the majority of your grade and she expects PROFESSIONAL work on every section of it. tests weren\'t very hard if you study and understand all the key terms in the chapters. you will work you nuts off for a B. forget an A unless you are one of her favorite students in the class. shes a nice lady, easy to confront. the smartest kids in the class didn\'t get A\'s fyi, your grade basically depends upon how much extra effort you give.

OK, Metcalf is just about the nicest lady you could ever hope to meet. She is very approachable and always willing to help. Having said this, I still recommend NOT taking her for 346. Her lectures (if you could call them that) don\'t help you AT ALL for the midterm and the final, they only help you for the group project that is worth 35% of your grade. I got stuck with an awful group and I paid dearly for it. She asks questions on the tests that she did not cover in class, and also does not have in her lecture notes, so basically you have to read and memorize every chapter if you want to get an A on the exams because you have no idea what exactly could be on it. She is very ambiguous about how she wants things done, so it\'s impossible to know exactly what she wants you to do on the projects, which makes it incredibly difficult to get an A. You will have to work your butt off to pull a B in this class. I put more time and effort into this class than any other this quarter and didn\'t even get a B-.

Class is made up of mainly online participation, a group project, and 2 tests. The tests are HARD. Even if you study everything in the book and whats on the powerpoints you may miss something. I got an 86 on my first exam and a 70 on the second. However, they are only worth a small section of your grade. The group project is most of your grade, so make sure you like your group, otherwise you\'ll hate your quarter. The online portion isn\'t too hard to keep up with as long as you look at the weekly to do. Even with my low exam scores I managed an A in the class and found Metcalf to be incredibly helpful. She genuinely cares about the wellbeing of her students and is always willing to help.

Metcalf is never clear with what she wants. You get put into a group at the start of the quarter, and you stick with that group for the remaining time. I loved my group, thats probably what helped me survive this class. There's a bunch of useless poster projects, and presentation time is mostly just walking around looking and everyone else's posters. As long as you include a bunch of things she's like to hear about, you'll get an A. The tests were hard only because they were so vague. The answers are so similar its ridiculous. Also, I did not like how she gave everyone a different grade on the last part of the group project based on how much work she thinks we put in individually, this is a biased way of grading, and if your gonna do that, do it on a part that isn't worth over 50% of the final project. I would've gotten an A if not for her personal opinion.

Metcalf is a tricky one to evaluate. As far as presenting the material of the course, she is not the greatest. Her lectures are a bit vague at times, as are her assignment instructions. However, what she lacks in lecturing ability she makes up for in level headedness and sympathy. She is far and away the most understanding professor I have had in OCOB, and she is more than willing to help her students out with any problems they might have. The course is team based, but most of the team work can be split up and completed individually. Her tests are pretty straight forward if you follow her study guides, and they only account for a combined 30% of your grade, so your focus should be on your personal contributions and your team paper. Make sure to keep up on the individual assignments (especially your blog), and keep on top of the course material and an A in the class should be no problem.

DO NOT BUY THE COURSEBOOK FOR THIS CLASS!!! It is a complete waste of money- she only tested us on it twice the entire quarter, which equates roughly 3% of your grade. Do a good job on the group project and you'll get an A without wasting money on a book you can't sell back.

This woman is the poorest excuse for a teacher. Serioiusly, I wanted to slap her in the face. Mostly, I lauged to myself all class long about how pathetic her class was. She is unclear, discriminatory, and honestly an overall poor professor. It amazes me that this is the best Cal Poly can do, it's sad. Go ahead and take her, you will want to put a gun to your head I promise.

She is a good teacher. She comes across as a little intimidating for her strict grading scales, but she is actually a pretty fair and generous grader. She is very busy and doesn't seem to have much time to talk to you if you need help, but hang in there, she'll get around to you. She seems to like certain "popular" people and is a bit biased.

She was clear in what she wanted, no book, no tests, just two big projecs that took me a few hours each. Use your creativity, she appreciates an effort and has an unbelievable memory. Dr. Metcalf is a good teacher. We did a variety of different things in class such as InFocus Projects, presentations, class exercises, etc. There were no quizzes or tests, but she does require you to complete a Learning Journal by the end of the quarter. Sometimes the topics were a bit boring. Participation is a high percentage of your grade. She knows who goes to class and who doesn't. Overall, Metcalf is a cool teacher. I would recommend her to others.

Lynn is such a horrible teacher! She is so busy with her new born child and uses it as an excuse to slack off with teaching ineffectively. She makes you dread going to class with long boring powerpoint slides along with a monotone voice that puts you right to sleep. In my opinion she certainly has favorites (because I was one of them) and grades very poorly. Group work is a big portion of your overall grade. Even though you clarify your topic with her and make sure you included everything in your presentation, she will still give you with a low score if you're not one of her favorites. She claims that striving to get an A is a bad thing, trying too hard, so she will give you a lower grade. She doesn't stimulate the class whatsoever and makes international marketing such a drag. Lynn lacks alot of patience and has mood swings, so beware. You can never meet up with her during her office hours. Even though there are no quizzes, midterms, or a final, many of us would've rather prefered getting tested than being one of the many victims of her unfair grading which is based on personal feelings. Yet if she had tests in her class, everyone would probably fail since she is such a horrible teacher. She continually asks culture insights from only one person in the class which makes other students with the same ethnic background feel less significant because she never calls on them or gives them a chance to speak. Participation points is so hard to gain since she has favorites and calls on the same people in class and doesn't even tally up those who do speak, doesn't even take role. Do yourself a favor and don't take this discriminatory teacher!

i had such high expectations going into this class, but i was quickly disappointed! her lectures are dry and repetitive and barely gave me any real insight into what international marketing is really about. she grades you higher if your are her favorite, or if you tell her exactly what she wants to hear. Warning: the class seems easy because there are no midterms or quizzes, but you have to work your ass off to even get a C, trust me!

Metcalf is not mean or difficult... but she is way too bitchy for a professor. I agree that she does play favorites also. The course material is crap. Busy work, group assignments, and horrible lectures. If you don't need to take this class, then don't. It is like org behavior with a marketing emphasis. Absolutely horrible.

I took this class online and really actually enjoyed it. She explained lecture material clearly, emailed often, responded back to emails, and was enthusiastic and ready for you during office hours. She gives good pointers for your projects, so I'd definitely suggest office hours if you want to know exactly how to get an A in her class.

Avoid taking Metcalf if you have the choice, most often you won't though. Try to get on her good side and she will love you. If you get on her bad side, you will regret it and probably get a bad grade. She is way too busy for her own good, and constantly talks about how busy she is. She is not very apathetic and may have a lot of knowledge about marketing, but she is so pessimistic that it is hard to listen to her wisdom. This particular class involves picking a local company and doing a marketing project for them. You have weekly updates with her on how the group project is going. On the positive side, this class involves no tests or studying.

Professor Metcalf is extremely smart and knowledgable. She's very open-minded and tries to implement new/modern marketing strategies. This class is as hands-on as it gets in the marketing curriculum (if you choose a good project and have a good team). You work with real clients and basically an unpaid marketing team they hired.

Metcalf is very academic when it comes to the client projects. She has good intentions, but the class is a ton of work. It seemed like we were doing more for her than for our actual client and tailored our project to her for our grade, but our client would have been happy with something slightly different.

Metcalf is quite spacey and has a hard time keeping up with all of the client projects at times. My biggest piece of advice is to make sure you put in the time to work on your team's Google docs. She DOES go in and look at revision history to see how much time you spend on them. Do that and you will get full credit on about 20% of your final grade. The client that you work for throughout the quarter REALLY affects your experience. I had an amazing client so it wasn't bad at all but some teams had really difficult clients and they struggled a lot more. So choose wisely when filling out your client request survey!

Dr. Metcalf is really nice, fair and reasonable. If you don't like taking tests then I highly recommend her. There are no tests, only small projects that you can do at home. The projects take some of time if you do them by yourself, but she's an easy grader on them. You learn a good amount in the classes with case studies and guest speakers. Overall, the work load isn't bad considering there's no studying or reading.

Overall this is a pretty good class. You have some stimulating class discussions and a few interesting labs. My only complaint would be the work you have to complete for the course and the course materials. The work you do is essentially busy work. If you have ever used the internet you will be able to do everything easily. It is not hard but it is a lot of busy work that will be annoying at times. The course materials are kinda outdated but if you have a tough time getting the elective you really want this is not a bad cop out.

Lynn makes an effort to apply all the readings and cases to student's job-hunting endeavors. Each class we talked about what we could discuss with potential employers about global commerce. The learning journal is a TON of work, but it's better than a final. Make sure you stay on top of your daily journal entries or else they'll get ya during dead week!
