Dr. Mewes is the BEST. He is funny and nice and his class is actually enjoyable. The homework isn't just busy work, it actually helps you a lot on the midterms. His quizzes are super easy and he only gave like 4 all quarter. Definitely take Dr. Mewes, you won't regret it.

Mewes was a great professor who gave us everything that we needed to know during lecture, so we didn't have to waste time searching the book for information that we might not need. All the homework was very straightforward, and he tried to make things as simple as possible while making sure that we still understood all of the concepts. Instead of trying to trick us and make us work harder than we needed to, Mewes was very good about having us learn the material that we actually need.

Mewes is a sarcastic fuck, but he knows physics, and he knows how to explain it to people who don't. Doesn't use the textbook (thank god) because who can read physics? very clear expectations of students, and presents material in a great way. highly suggest taking this professor unless you get offended easily, but you shouldn't take him too seriously. Also he's a theoretical physicist and has a lot of interesting stuff to say about relativity and the time space continuum.

Dr. Mewes is a very enthusiastic lecturer. Extremely intelligent and will clarify things the book obscures or omits. Fair tests and a fair grader. Office hours are super helpful.

So at first, I was a lil excited for this class because I thought I loved physics after AP Physics C (loved both of them). Boy, oh boy was I wrong. When you hear the word "Mewes," you almost go all "awww" because it sounds like a cat. The only similarity IRL is the feeling when a cat gives out a shirll "mEoW" after it scratches your face. He has a very gleeful smile that is sure to put you into depression when you associate it with physics. ugh. I would probably stare at the ceiling instead of listening to him. It hurts to think about it. Also, it doesn't matter if you have an 8 am lab, but if you come late to class you miss the weekly quiz which you will never retake in your life. If you ask him about taking it at the end of class, or in a different lab period, or virtually ever, he says no with the most gleeful smile. He's kinda like the joker, and you're the guy who gets stabbed in the hand. Oh, and if you miss lab once you fail the class. And about half of all homework feels impossible to do (try to fake it tho, there's a 90% chance it'll be overlooked/ partial credit). Very objective facts: Very (too?) enthusiastic, Does not use the textbook, grades fair, homework is challenging (assigns weekly quizzes based on previous week's lab, weekly-ish homework, two midterms, and a final) P.S. Nearly all of Chegg's homework answers for his homework is wrong.

Easiest class I've taken at Cal Poly. Barely ever went to class and still got almost full points on all tests.

Matt Mewes was an awesome physics professor! He tries his best to cram all the information of Physics 2 into the quarter, and I would say does pretty well with pacing. HE explains things very well and is entertaining, which made his morning class for me much more enjoyable. There are no lab reports, only easy little quizzes on each lab the week after, so he makes labs much more tolerable. He also likes to teach little random facts related to the material, which is interesting. Definitely recommend him for whatever class, physics 132 or otherwise.

Matt is the number one Homie when it comes to physics profs, he hooks you up on mondays with a rad joke and loves his variables and equilateral triangles. Homework is standard once a week hitting you with them thoughtful questions getting you to know your material. Hes great at explaining and a fair grader. Take mewes!!

Mewes is a great professor. He explains the material extremely clearly. He write his own problem sets for homework, which makes the work you do outside of class directly relate to the lecture. His tests are based directly off the lecture and homework sets. There are no surprises. He doesn't require a lab report. Instead, he has you keep a notebook of your findings and has an open note lab quiz the next week. If you keep good notes, you'll be fine. He's made what was supposed to be the toughest class in the physics series enjoyable!

Mewes is very enthusiastic about the material he is teaching, and he lectures in a pretty straightforward manner, although he gets onto long tangents sometimes (always interesting though). HW are his own written problems and are directly related to lectures. The exams are very similar to HW questions. Great in office hours, very friendly and willing to help you work through any difficulties.

Mewes was a great professor. Very clear in his lecture and very passionate about the material. He gives a joke every Monday and is always smiling. Great at answering questions! You wont need the physics book, since he uses his own worksheets and homework. Tests are very fair. Not easy, but fair. He's a great guy and always willing to help out! I would definitely recommend Mewes to anyone if you need to take the Physics series!

Had Mewes for my 133 lab and found it very easy and enjoyable. Instead of doing lab reports, you just have a quiz over the previous lab the week after you did the lab. Even better, the quizzes are open note. The 133 lab itself is very easy and if you have a good understanding of e&m you'll only need to be there for one and a half or two hours of the allotted 3. Mewes is a nice guy too.

Grading: 20% Midterm 1, 20% Midterm 2, 30% Final, 30% Homework and Quizzes Most of the class is spent on practice problems, which helps prepare you for quizzes and the exam free response, in addition to the homework. All the problems are very similar. He does not use the book at all. All the homework problems are written by himself, which is nice, but they are fairly difficult compared to quizzes and tests, so this was my lowest grade. Quizzes are super easy if you know how to do the problems and have the equations memorized. Exams are more tricky, however, but you do get an equation sheet. The free response is easy, but the multiple choice is quite difficult. Each question is based on concepts or simple calculations. The concepts were difficult, but that is probably down to me not completely understanding the material. In office hours, he is always helpful and will lead you through the problem. He won't help with math mistakes (but he is lenient with those on quizzes). Still, I sometimes get the impression that he would rather be doing other things. In class, he is the complete opposite, though. He is passionate about the material and presents it clearly. Overall, Mewes is a good but not great professor. I am taking him again for 132, so I do recommend him.

So I took Mewes because he had a better polyrating than pretty much all the other physics professors. I was anticipating this class to be difficult but thought it would be a good class. Personally, I didn't think Mewes did a very good job at presenting new material. So many of the kids in this class were freshman engineers who had taken physics in high school. Lots of times when I asked other students how they were doing so well, they told me it was simply because they had learned it before and I don't even think they applied Mewes' methods to solving problems. Overall, I was expecting to fail this class because I was doing so poorly, despite this class being the class I've probably put the most effort into in my 3 years here, but he ended up curving the grade or something and I got a C. I went to the free physics tutoring which was helpful and hired 2 different tutors to try to help me. What I found most helpful was just working with some students in my class since Mewes writes his own homework questions and doesn't really use the book, doing your work with other classmates who learned how to do the work the same way Mewes taught it is probably the most helpful.

Basically Mewes structures his lectures around strictly examples and there's not much actual lecturing which is good for physics. He's not a bad professor at all, he has a nerdy sense of humor, very practical logic, and has a set way he wants to teach the class. The class has two midterms which are a few multiple choice and a few short answer problems. These are not easy tests at all, they are very challenging and different from those discussed in class. He assigns homework due every week and it's fairly challenging (highly recommend that you take advantage of his office hours). Occasionally he will give a quiz out but will tell the class first, they're not too difficult. If you're not really good at physics and not an engineer, I would not recommend this class for you at all. Definitely not as easy A or B. Mewes has trouble addressing the capabilities of the class and it kinda seems like he has a set structure and if you pass you pass and if you don't, then you're screwed. He doesn't offer much assistance with grades at all however, the one thing he does really well is if you go to his office hours, he does an excellent job at clarifying things discussed in class. Overall, the majority of people won't get a good grade in the class, you will struggle a lot, but you will gain a pretty good understanding of how physics works.

Mewes was a pretty good teacher. He gave some detail behind certain concepts, and was pretty helpful if you had questions. He gives you example problems and homework problems that will be on the test, but keeps the answers at his office so you have to go in to check if they're all right. His office hours were pretty chill-- he answered questions and didn't mind helping. He grades two random problems on the homework completely for accuracy so don't bullshit the homework like I did at first because it will bring ur grade down later. You have two midterms and a final. He doesn't make you get the textbook. it's mostly worksheets.

I liked this professor. He was really clear in his expectations, clear in lecture. Homework was a bit hard. He engages with the class and keeps lecture relatively entertaining. I got a D because I had a bad quarter for personal reasons (gave up on the homework and took zeros, didn't really study for exams). If you keep up with the material, good class.
