i was super nervous for this class since history was never my best subject, but she made this class super doable and fun! a couple essays, decent amount of reading, and a midterm and final that she makes very possible to get a good grade on. definitely take her! she made history very interesting and i always enjoyed going to her class.

I wanted to take an easy GE that fulfilled the D1 requirement as well as the USCP. I wanted to take the other two teachers that taught HIST 201 with near 4.0s but my schedule didn't work out. I'd imagine in those large lecture classes, it was really different from this class. Professor Reid taught this class like a high school class in that she really encouraged participation. And it's actually a decent portion of your grade. I participated maybe once or twice a week over the 4 hours of class a week but managed to pull off an A in the class. The rest of the class is based on essays. I guess I'm a decent writer so that helped. If you work hard and participate, it's very doable to get an A in this class, but it does feel like a high school class.

Such a sweet lady! She has very clear lectures and loves to hear from the class. She's big on participation and she's really good at memorizing the names of her students. A lot of the graded work are essays rather than tests, so this is a good class to take if you like to write. The work involves choosing a stance and defending it with examples rather than just simply memorizing facts. She's so nice I love her 10/10 would recommend.

Ann is a cool lecturer there are not traditional tests with multiple choice but essays where you use information from the book and other sources to prove that you know the material. That being said it is difficult to get an A on the essays so beware of that but she is not overly harsh as well overall she's a solid teacher who grades fairly

Professor Reid is really nice and all, but I don't think her class was that great for several reasons. Although she does sometimes hand back your papers with your score, but she doesn't update all the grades in PolyLearn at all. This class is 80% papers and 20% participation. Attendance is a MUST! Of course I want to attend class and get the most out of my education but mandatory attendance is dreadful when her class is SO boring. She tries to enact in class discussion but they're not interesting and create high school vibes. She just asks questions like, "What do you think?" and people who want participation points will say, "Oh I found it interesting that *repeats sentence from primary source*" The discussions aren't very deep and even when she tries to ask deep questions it fails to engage the class because she doesn't make it relevant. When she lectures, she just puts a WHOLEE damn essay on ONE slide. It hurts your eyes. Her average class day looks like this: Starts off playing some historical music relevant to the time period she will lecture about, her Essay-like Powerpoints while she drones on, a clip/movie and/or analyzing a primary source. Then an in-class discussion or in-class writing exercise. Overall, this class is okay if you like writing papers and are good at BSing stuff.

Anne Reid's class mainly consists of participation and essays. Although getting participation points should be fairly easy (attend every class because she knows everyone's names and faces, participate in class, and don't use your laptop and phone), she grades the writing assignments pretty harshly. And these writing assignments are worth most of your grade. Don't expect an A in this class unless you actually want to read the textbook, understand and analyze the history, and participate in classroom discussions. Otherwise, it's pretty easy to get a B in the class. She clearly knows her history and her lectures can be pretty interesting.

As stated in other reviews for Dr. Reid, you can expect the same thing in class everyday. Music, Power Points, Lecture, Video, and Activity. She assigns tons of reading for each class and genuinely expects students to complete it. For Fall Quarter 2018 there were no tests, only take-home essays. Essays were not too difficult and were always based around primary source documents. Attendance and Participation are a combined 20%! I attended every class but after the first four classes I realized the readings were not necessary and stopped reading all together. I didn't realize she could see when and how often we are viewing the class materials (readings) through Polylearn! Not opening the readings before class knocked my A to a B. Also, make sure to raise your hand and chip in to the conversation occasionally. Hope this review prevents any of you from making the same mistakes I did. Overall a good class to complete a GE.

I honestly was very worried for a class like this, I'm not good at history and I didn't want something very challenging as a GE. Yes, it is true that there is a lot of reading, but there are no reading quizzes or anything like that. You just have to use the documents as evidence in your work. Skim the documents and be able to quote things later, but after the first few weeks I gave up on thoroughly reading 20+ pages every other night and am either getting a high B or low A. Writing is a lot easier than quizzes and tests. And no final!

This was a relatively easy class, two essays, a final project, and a handful of in class assignments. The tough part is that 40% of your grade is completely subjective. She bases it off of your contributions in class, attendance, and how she feels about you overall. Don't expect to learn a ton, and the lectures (which you have to attend) are just on big discussion about what you read the night before. Pretty painful, but not a ton of work.

SHE IS A COMMUNIST. If you have any conservative viewpoints she will hate you and try to force her ideas upon you. It seemed as if her focus for the class was to change the mindsets of her students to be more liberal than actually convey any California history.

I was really excited for this class. After taking Jones' Political Science of Latin America and the Middle East, I was looking forward to learning more about colonial Latin America. But this class was overall a disappointment on that front. The readings, initially interesting, began to be redundant by week 3. We were expected to write two historiographical papers even though 304 was not a prerequisite for the class. I wish that she had lectured more just to provide context to the articles. We basically came to class and discussed the readings for an hour and sometimes did a response to a primary source. Professor Reid herself is great. She is interested in her students and helpful if you ask questions. She also sometimes brought food to class which is always a bonus. So Professor Reid great, course outline not very inspiring.
