Taylor is great! He is very nice and very approachable. Taylor also knows all of his chemistry very well and is always there to help students through the difficult course material. Definitely take Taylor if you can.

While Taylor clearly demonstrated a vast knowledge of chemistry, he didn't seem to be able to teach it very well. I hardly learned anything from him and had to result to not only the book, but other videos and my past notes. He also was very little help during lab or office hours. I would not recommend his class if you don't already have a good general understanding of chemistry.

Taylor is a nice and fair teacher. He will teach you ~70% of the material. You will need to either ask questions about labs or read the textbook to make up the rest. Overall definitely a good teacher would recommend taking.

I had Dr. Haynes his first quarter teaching here at Cal Poly Fall 2015. Overall he was an awesome professor. I'm a biochem major and he took the extra time to make sure I was happy with my major and course progress. He genuinely cares about his students and will go the extra mile to help them succeed in office hours and in class. He likes to get to know his students and lets you call him by his first name if you want. He was always super approachable and friendly, and even if he didn't have office hours scheduled he was usually there anyways and happy to help. His lectures were generally based on just him talking and writing topics on the board rather than completely relying on a powerpoint. We did a lot of labs in this class. Quizzes almost every week. 2 midterms and a final. His tests really don't try and trick you so as long as you pay attention in class and make sure you understand the topics you'll be fine. The class was really enjoyable Taylor, not an easy A but doable. Take him if you get the chance you won't regret it!

I LOVE DR. HAYNES. He is extremely intelligent and overall a cool guy. Definitely talk to him. He runs some social experiments on students but just because he's a curious guy. One of the chilliest professors, but won't skimp on taking off points if it's warranted. If you study, this class is an absolute breeze. If he likes you (if you talk to him about anything weird or quirky, he'll like you), there's no way your grade will be below a C. The TA's and LA's grade everything. If you have the chance, oh my god take Dr. Haynes.

While I was taking this course, I thought Haynes was a great professor just because I was doing well on his tests and had a high B in the class. However, after taking the common final and taking Chem 125 this quarter, I realized that he was not a good professor at all. He NEVER lectures, the most he lectured during a class was 15 minutes. I think the only reason he has good reviews on here is because he's a nice guy and the class itself is easy. I had a very high B throughout the whole quarter, then when I took the common final i didn't know any of it because other professors have written it too and I ended up with a C in the class. During my Chem 125 class this quarter I've had to go to my professor's office hours multiple times just because I didn't understand some of the stuff in the class because I didn't learn the basics in 124 due to Haynes. Cool guy, easy class, but you don't learn anything

Lectures are hard to follow...... does not lecture on the material as much as you would hope. It usually consists of him just talking over a few words on a screen and doesn't make much sense. Some of his lectures are hard to pay attention to simply because he interacts with the class so little. He covers very shallow example problems, and very few of them, in class and then expects students to have an in depth understanding on quizzes. On the other hand, very approachable guy and will help you if you ask.

Haynes clearly knows his chemistry, but is not a good teacher at all. He never answers questions and barely actually lectures. Most of class we sit around doing a warm-up problem and then never seeing the answers to those problems. Not a professor i would recommend.

Dr. Haynes is a really nice guy and interesting to talk to. He also clearly knows a lot. HOWEVER he does not lecture very well (or very often) and cannot always explain topics in a way students can understand. If you struggle with chemistry you will definitely struggle in this class and will need to put in a lot of extra work to even get a C. The labs are long and he does not usually answer any questions you may have if they are complex. He is very accessible in office hours but not always very helpful. His quizzes are somewhat fair, but he likes to take off points for even the slightest mistakes. His midterms are ridiculously hard. I really like him as a person and this is not me ripping on him, this is me straight evaluating him.

Dr. Haynes is an incredibly caring and genuinely kind professor. He WANTS you to learn and understand topics and also feel comfortable in the class. While the subject (for me at least) was difficult, he would always be available in office hours or in class to help answer questions even if he sometimes answers in a round about way to make you think. Class averages on midterms were fairly low and many of my classmates and I were very concerned and asked him about it. He told us that at the end of the quarter he curves everyone up and does a lot of number crunching to make sure that we do ok. He basically told me that if I do good on labs and quizzes and ok-ish on midterms, to not worry about passing. Midterms were difficult (as any chem midterm typically is), but he really does care and wants to help so do not be afraid to ask. Labs were fun and LAs helped a lot. He doesn't lecture a lot but when he does it's pretty straight forward and he goes slow to make sure everyone is on the same page.

While Dr. Haynes is kind of harsh at grading, he is an overall good professor. It is clear that he cares about his students and wants them to succeed.I struggled in chem 127, but 128 made a lot more sense to me. His lectures are quite helpful and since he is an organic chemist he likes to explain why things are the way they are. He is extremely helpful at clarifying things in office hours and his tests are hard but doable. They synthesize things you've learned so that way you have to think to solve the problems and are not simply regurgitating information. He also did weekly quizzes which were helpful to make me stay ontop of mastering the concepts so I didn't need to cram for any midterms or finals. I'd highly recommend taking him for 128 as his class is organized and well structured!

Dr Haynes is a very very kind professor. He gives his all for office hours and whenever you have a question for him. But I want to just warn you that his midterms and finals which are most of the grade are very difficult. I am not sure how I got a solid C when i failed both midterms and the final (I got a B+ in 127). Basically this class kicked my ass. I worked really hard to get the depressing 57% on the final. If you are a confident chemistry student i would take him, but if you do not understand chemistry beyond what is being taught then i would recommend a different teacher. Again Dr. Haynes is the sweetest professor on earth he reminded me of a teddy bear!

This teacher sucks. Don't take him. He has no sense of material he is presenting to his students. He does not clarify the depth he expects you to know or not know. Also his lectures are extremely un-engaging and he treats the class likes its a middle school class full of 6th graders. I am sure he is a nice guy but when it comes to successfully teaching a difficult subject he fails miserably. I hope cal poly realizes this and gets rid of him ASAP. He says he is super approachable but is constantly making students feel unwelcome in office hours. He doesn't give nearly enough examples of what is expected and needed to know in order for students to get a grasp on the material. Also is grading is very ambiguous. Maybe my least favorite teacher at cal poly. I love chemistry and am really good at it. I would recommend taking someone other than him for a difficult class like ochem.

Dr. Haynes is a wonderful teacher. He's does everything he can to make the material understandable, and does his best to explain it multiple ways. He's very approachable and kind when you ask him questions. Also has a great sense of humor. He does everything he can to add in opportunities to earn extra points here and there. O-Chem is hard, but he's an effective instructor. Would recommend!

Really nice guy, or at least he tries to make himself seem like one. He tells people that he is judge free but it always seems like he judges you on the inside. He is a terrible lecturer, I have never been so lost in a class at Cal Poly. I honestly just Kaan Academy'd every subject and understood them more. His quizzes are either ridiculously easy or insanely hard. And his midterms are the hardest tests in the world unless you completely understand every aspect of Ochem. He's super inconsistent with grading and class lectures. However, his projects are fun and he is really open to criticism so its obvious that he is trying to get better, I am sure in a few years at Cal Poly he will figure it out and become a good professor. I have heard some students say that he is their favorite professor, so I guess take this comment with a grain of salt.

Dr. Haynes is hands-down one of the best professors I've ever had at Cal Poly. He knows what he's talking about, and is constantly trying to find new ways to make the material easier to understand. I'm not going to say that it was an easy course, you have to do a lot of practice and studying on your own, but he tries to provide you with resources and materials to be able to do so and be successful. At the end of almost every lecture he gives you a list of the things that you should have gotten out of it, and he's very clear about what is going to be on the midterms. He's fair with his grading, and overall just a really nice guy. His lectures do sometimes feel like he's teaching to a younger audience, but honestly, it's easier to understand than if he talked to us as if we understood all of the material already.
