Prof. MacDougall keeps you interested during lectures by including the class in discussions. However, even if you have a superior understanding of the course material, it is not necessarily going to be reflected in the grade you receive. My class had a midterm AVERAGE of 52%, with a high of 86%, and he refused to curve.

Okay...This guy does know his stuff, but he doesn't care if you get it from his teaching methods. The homework load is nothing outrageous, and his tests are somewhat fair. My major problem with this guy is the way he deals with students away from class. I was borderline A to B going into the final, so I tried to get in touch with him about my grade. I emailed him (which he said was the best way to reach him) to find out when would be a good time to go to his office to talk about my grade. This guy had the audacity to tell me that he was too busy grading papers to meet with me and to just do my best. Not a bad teacher, but not a good guy by any means. Turn and run. I never have, nor ever will say anything nice about this guy.

MacDougall is the worst professor I’ve ever had the misfortune to have. He is unorganized, apathetic about student’s success, and unreliable. I learned absolutely nothing in this joke of a class. He never gave us a syllabus nor did he update us on our grades. Office hours were completely useless and uncomfortable. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Do not take this class unless you enjoy not knowing your grade until dead week, enjoy being lectured everyday on things that do not relate back to what will be tested on, and like going into office hours for homework help only for him to turn you away and tell you to figure it out and leave his office. He is a flaky professor, unprofessional, and ruined me for 313. I would have taken any other professor even at worse times just to not have MacDougall. This guy is A DOUCHE. DON"T TAKE HIS CLASS>

Prof. MacDougall was an average teacher, but fails to effectively lecture on the concepts. He spends the whole quarter lecturing on only a few concepts, and expects you to be able to interpret and explain every concept. His tests are not cumulative; however, over 40% of our grade was determined from assignments during dead week and finals week. He likes to use groups a lot during class as well as projects outside of class. Overall, I found the class very tedious and too focused on an understanding of only a few concepts.

i was actually kinda surprised by all of the negative comments below. I really didn't know what to expect when I took this class but i thought he was a pretty good teacher and a really nice guy. If you miss any assignments he always let me turn them in later and didnt even take points off. I got Cs on both midterms but got a B in the class. If you just do the hw, you get an A for 15% of your grade. We also had 30% for group projects, 20% for final reflection, two 10% midterms and the rest quizzes. the quizzes and midterms are hard but if you do everything else you will get at least a B.

Professor MacDougall is a kind man who seems to overall want to help and better his students, however some of his learning techniques could be refined. His methods for lecture and note taking are sometimes scattered and confusing (especially on a more difficult subject matter). If taking this class I would recommend forming study groups early on because you will find it necessary to teach/learn most of the material on your own. Do not procrastinate, it will haunt you.

MacDougall is a nice guy if you're smart. If not, I recommend taking someone else because if you're not naturally inclined to understand economics then he will not give two shits about your grade. Also, there is absolutely NO agriculture aspects of the class. NONE. NOT ONE. This guy probably doesn't even know what a cow looks like. He constantly talks shit about Fresno State being inferior to CP but in reality he isn't even qualified to teach there. Or any Ag College as far as I'm concerned.

Alright, people need to stop their bitching, Neal is smart as hell and underrated. Sure, his grading is tough because he likes things described HIS way, but his way is correct. The way he teaches forces you to actually learn, and people complain when somebody is doing their job. He assigns no homework (literally), 3 mid terms, no final, and a final paper at the end that's like 4 easy pages total. He'll help you out if you go to office hours and has retakes for two of the three mid terms that can only add to your score. Good man.

MacDougall changed my mind on how I judge "bad" professors. He is not bad; he is literally in a league of his own. "Terrible" doesn't even begin to describe him. "Awful" is a compliment. He says that he teaches a flipped class, but this is just a cop-out so he doesn't have to do shit to help us with the material. He expects you to come to class with questions on the chapters, but will not explain the material. All you do everyday is work on group work so he (again) doesn't have to do anything. The midterms are super hard (the class average on the third midterm was around 50%) and if you don't answer the short answer questions the way he wants (which is every question), you can forget about even getting partial credit. Your answer can be completely correct but if you don't word it the way he wants then it's wrong. Heed my warning: DO NOT TAKE MACDOUGALL. Don't be stupid like my friend and take MacDougall over Cai because he thought there would be a language barrier. He hated himself all of last quarter for doing that. If every other 212 class is filled up and you are thinking of just taking MacDougall to get the class out of the way, don't do it. Take something else and wait until you have a better rotation to get a different teacher.

He loves watching his students struggle with the material.  This little man gets intimidated if you challenge him and he will blow you off.  He gets scared if you confront him about his shitty-ness.  If you are not a hippy liberal then you can forget about him liking you.  He gave a reading for the take home portion of the final from some super biased website and worded one of the questions so that you had to make it sound like you agreed with the article.  DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM THIS APE-FACED LITTLE MAN. Neil, I know you read your polyratings because you told us so.  You are a giant douchebag and a massive faggot.

DO NOT LET THIS "PROFESSOR" BURN A HOLE INTO YOUR INNOCENT SOUL WITH HIS BEADY EYES. MacDouche, or Mr. Severus Snape, WILL what he calls "teach" this AG class with a very BIASED and LIBERAL outlook. If you don't answer questions the exact way he wants it and with the opinion that he is in agreement with, you will get no credit. The JiTT (Just an Idiot not Trying to Teach) is the most ridiculous thing I have ever done. You either get 100%, 75%, and F or a 0. Every Midterm's average score was in the 50% range, and had to have an extreme curve to even give C's out. His instructions are twisted and mingled on every question he asks. Continuing the no-teach approach this "master" has is that every class we were to do group work and he would just walk around, smirking when students struggle. What kind of "teacher" doesn't realize that if their average score on tests is an F, that there is obviously something wrong with his methods. Back in 2003 was a good review on here and since then he must have been tenured because its gone straight to fucking Hell. His grading scale will FUCK YOU. The only person who actually looks at your work is his little Draco Malfoy of a TA. He doesn't touch them. He also seems to obtain the invisible cloak from his little steed every time a Midterm comes up. He wasn't there for the final midterm and loves to cancel office hours, which are located somewhere in the library- wherever he prefers to sit that day, for days before any test. Nothing in this class made sense or had much to do with economics. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I would rather drop out of CP than take another course with McNasty.

MacDougall is not nearly as bad as some of the previous comments say. Although his teaching style isn't anyone's favorite choice, it's effective. It really makes you think and although I hate it, I've learned a good amount and the quarter isn't even over yet. He is very much willing to work with you and help you understand. He's also trying out new grading scales which are geared towards how much effort you put in and not solely the grade you get on assignments. He may not nearly be the best, but he isn't the devil of professors. He's just very particular, just like everyone else in the world, and he is more than willing to help you understand.

People love to hate on MacDougall just because he makes you learn. His teaching styles are unconventional where you read before class then go in take a short quiz that does not count for any points and he lectures solely off of student performance on the quizzes. This way he knows what he needs to spend the most time on. His grading scale is credit/no credit and you get to retake the module quizzes if you don't pass them, which are the biggest tests. No midterm or final. MacDougall will make you learn or you won't succeed. He is a very smart man. His ponytail probably knows more about economics than most of his classes. This class is not an easy A. If you put time into the material and go to class and pay attention you will actually learn something, imagine that.

I am solely writing this review to inform incoming student about Mr. MacDougall. I am not going to call him "the devil" although 80% of our class thought so, but instead I would highly suggest not taking this class. Mr. MacDougall is an unprofessional teacher. I realized throughout this course starting from week two he did not convey material to students effectively at all. Office hours were a joke as he was always occupied with non-students and was little help. He has been the worst teacher I have had at Cal Poly. Many students stopped coming to class, his teaching style is poor, and he is awful at allowing students to express and analyze economics in a way that opens methods for learning. Please save yourself from "not a professor CrackDougall"

MacDougall isn't a hard grader, he just wants the exact answer worded correctly. If you go class and actually pay attention his class is a breeze. He also posts videos online explaining the basic concepts of each chapter. Going to class isn't enough, you actually have to engage your self and ask questions to earn an A. Imagine that, a teacher at CalPoly that makes you learn. And don't get arrested at Farmers Market.

MacDougall tariffed when I first started the quarter... he seemed to constantly pick on and make students (myself included) feel stupid... His course is mainly based on "assessments" that you must get an 80% on in order to pass and that you have 3 retakes... at the beginning I was getting 47% on those and freaking out!! Then I decided to suck it up, go to office hours, and put in the extra mile to make sure I would pass ( and I ended up passing all 6 :D ), however it was far from easy for me and I would not recommend taking McDougall if you're unwilling to learn material outside of class ( he doesn't really lecture ,,, he expects you to learn beforehand and just practice with him during lecture) also there are 2 books, you need to read one of them ( either Drive or What Money Can't Buy) I recommend being on that because there will be a huge essay at the end that counts big time for your grade... he has a very strict rubric HOWEVER if you participate in class and do well over all he will (hopefully) curve your individual grade accordingly... over all McDougall can seem scary, though I began to see that was just him trying to interact with the class so don't take it personally, and he can be tough but if you put in the work you can do well, ! personally don't like the class format but it's doable ... just ask around because MacDougall IS NOT for everyone...

Great teacher if you give him the chance and actually talk to him. He is VERY intelligent and explains things clearly in office hours. A lot of the things said on here about him are true: he is a prick and he does think he is superior to everyone. But if you can get over yourself and not argue back or get frustrated with a lot if his bullshit and realize all the liberal acedemics you'll have as profs are the same way, he is actually very approachable and helpful in office hours. Overall great teacher and by the end of the quarter I actually came around to like the guy.

I read all the poly ratings yet decided to take MacDougall because I thought it couldn't possibly be so bad. I WAS VERY WRONG!!! Do whatever it takes not to take his class. If you end up having to take his class bring a computer and surf the web the entire time. You don't learn anything but have to go because of attendance. The key to his class is to go to his office hour and go over every question of the test before the retake. He will give you all the correct answers. Kiss up to him because he definitely picks favorites. I know you read these reviews MacDougall because you admitted to it in class. Perhaps take the advice and change your class structure. It is pointless and makes it so that students don't learn the material but learn how to memorize answers.

This is the first polyrating I have written. Coming into this course, I was extremely intimidated and didn't know what to expect because of the negative reviews. However, I had a great experience being in Professor MacDougall's 212 class. The way his class is set up is very unique, but it has a huge impact on the ability to retain and truly understand the material. If you are considering not taking this class because of the polyratings, you would be making a huge mistake. Prof MacDougall is a great teacher, who recognizes that his class is difficult and is willing to do whatever it takes to help his students succeed. If you utilize office hours, do the weekly prep work, and utilize the test retakes, you will succeed in this class.

First polyrating and for those of you scared about Macdougall please just hear me out for the duration of this evaluation. You are 100% not alone. Thought it’d be worth it to give this guy a review for future 212 students. Not going to lie this class was tough and I had to work really hard to get the grade I received. Like most, I read over the poly ratings prior to entering this class and was just absolutely terrified by Macdougall. However, it was a required class I had to take for my major. First few weeks were just as I anticipated in his class and it was an absolute shit show. His teaching method is as confusing as trying to solve a 23,000 word crossword puzzle and the homework assignments are just that as well. If you don’t word specific statements correctly on the homework or tests then don’t even bother hoping to get a good score. Now, with that being said, he offers multiple retakes on his tests and they have the EXACT same questions on them as the first attempt. Huge bonus. Also, this guy actually wants to know if you give a shit. Go into his office hours and actually talk to him. He’s a smart guy and will give you an upper hand on the kids that don’t show up to his office hours. In fact, that actually saved me from failing his class. He knows his class is hard believe me, but he wants to know that’s students are trying. And to be honest, Macdougall was one of my favorite teachers because he actually taught me how to think and think through massive problems. He will understand anything personal you have going on outside of class and is there to help with the work. He ended up rounding me to a B because I cared and worked hard and showed up to talk to him. That’s all I have to say. Give the guy a shot and stick with him. He’s only there to help.

This is not a hard class. As you can tell by the reviews, it's not going to be an easy A. He offers retakes on his 3 exams. They're all split up into two parts. The quant assessment is pretty simple once you know what type of questions he's going to ask. The explain assessment is like an essay question, and it can take a few times to get it right but going over it really helps. Basically, if you have the time in your schedule to work on the homework and go to office hours, then you'll get an A in this class. Make sure to go to office hours after every test and make sure you know every answer well. On the first try of each test make sure to know the definitions and pay attention in class to try and guess what the short answer questions will be. Overall, I would recommend taking this class. I'll admit it was intimidating at first, and I wished that I could've taken the other teacher offering this class, but I was pleasantly surprised by how straightforward it was to get an A. Also, work on the final essay (don't be scared it's not that bad) early and make sure to talk to him about it until you really understand what he's looking for.

I lost so much sleep over this course, it's not even a joke. His course is set up in a ridiculous manner that is completely ineffective if you don't excel when you are literally teaching yourself. His reversed classroom philosophy or whatever its called is so bassackwards that it makes simple content seem difficult. I was warned not to take this class by an upperclassman and like an idiot I thought, "I've dealt with difficult teachers before, I can handle this." I have few regrets in my life, but taking this class is one of the ones that makes the list. I was genuinely miserable the entire time. I ranted so much to my friends about his James Taylor look'n ass that now they text me every time they hear "Fire and Rain" on the radio. If you're considering taking a class with him, I'm going to caution you heavily against it. The man is a cross between Severus Snape and the devil incarnate.

This guys a fickle bitter little man. He is very lazy in his teaching style. I’m in an online class and the only material we get is a 7 minute video for each lesson and are told to go off and do it on your own. Provides very little help in office hours as it’s jam packed and only alloted 50 minute sessions. Doesn’t really work with students to get help. Any other option is better at this point. Wants every little thing about a question to be correct, no fractions, perfect wording the way HE wants it. Will ask a super long complicated question just to fuck with you when he could have made the question much simpler. You’ll learn econ but your grade will never show it. Fuck you Macdougall. I genuinely think this guy enjoys making students life much much harder than it needs to be.

If you have the option, never take Macdougall, I've had bad professors before but never like this. He sets up the classroom in a experimental way where you get into groups for the whole quarter and are theoretically supposed to learn the material amongst yourselves and then he reviews it. However, this form of teaching is horrible because you're going through a lecture where nobody in the class knows what their doing and he can barely explain it. You have three module tests, two parts each throughout the quarter and can retake them as many times as you need. They are graded on a scale which makes you need an 80% to not retake it, and he gives no partial credit. Once I wrote "the total amount of" instead of "all" and got the entire problem wrong. On our classes first test, two people in our entire class passed only 1 part and on the second one it was the same thing. While the retakes could be beneficial, it's basically a joke because you end up retaking them for so long that you can't learn any of the new material. He stresses office hours a ton but if you go in he will tell you to figure it out on your own. I seriously have never hated a class more because of this teacher, which sucks cause he could be a nice guy. On the last day to withdraw from the class, 4 people in my class did...it's that bad. If you need this for your major, find another teacher because you will put way more time and effort into it just to end up getting a bad grade. And if you do have to take it, withdrawal and wait for another teacher.

Before I showed up my very first class, I was well aware of MacDougall’s Polyratings score— and terrified for my GPA. At first, he seemed like a really cool professor. I had faith that I’d be able to survive the course without much stress, just like all the other seemingly impossible classes I’ve endured at this university. Boy, was I wrong. Throughout the quarter I learned 5 things about this professor. Number 1— On the exams, Dr. MacDougall expects you to regurgitate the information as accurately as he would. Number 2— Going into office hours is an unspoken rule in order to pass this class. If you want a decent grade in this class, go to office hours. Number 3— You WILL fail one (or most likely) more than one test in his class. He wants you to go into office hours and memorize all your mistakes to do the retake. Number 4— If you have a C going into finals week like I did, you WILL feel like you’re going to fail the class but you must likely won’t. He wants to see you to push yourself. Number 5— You will receive a constant onslaught of emails throughout the quarter, especially on breaks. He wants you to keep up with these constant messages and consistently turn in homework to succeed in this course.

This professor has an extremely unnecessary grading structure which will take you forever to figure out. If you are taking him online he will group you with other people and you will not be able to move forward in the class if they are not finishing their homework assignments, which should be illegal since I paid for the class and I am only responsible for myself not others. He also admitted to being unorganized and that he would help the class with some of their grades and give them a boost but ended up not doing that and only helped out some of the people that did better than others. If you are able to take this class some other time with another professor you should, this guy shouldn’t be teaching.

Professor MacDougall's class is EXTREMELY difficult. He doesn't present the class information well and his tests are impossible. If you decide to take Professor MacDougall's class don't plan on having an easy quarter. Okay okay- DO NOT, BY ANY MEANS, TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!!! I have heard the MacDougall used to be a kick back teacher, but now that he's gotten some years of experience at Poly, he's turned into a real dick. He doesn't present the information well at all. Although he knows it very well, he is an overall horrible teacher!! I am warning you, take someone else like Thompson for this class- Macdougall is awful. I really had to work at this class. My other classes struggled because of the effort I had to make in order to get a decent grade. I'm really not sure what these kids on this web site are talking about. Maybe they had the old, hip Macdougall. All I know, is the guy that I had sucks. And don't event think that you can waltz into his office hours and make buddy buddy with him. If you are really good at math, this class won't be anything special. His biggest flaw is that he doesn't give partial credit when you make one small mistake on a problem and it doesn't help matters that on there are only three or four problems on the whole test. I had a good understanding of the material and still managed to fail. The grades on our first test ranged from a zero (there were three zeroes and you can't get a zero if you don't take the first test) to a 105%. The class average was in the fifties. The second test wasn't much better than the first. Prof. Macdougall knows the material, and as far as lecture goes I have had worse teachers. The thing that is terrible about his class are the tests. My advice to anyone planning on taking this class is, unless you got an a in Math 118, stay away from MacDougal.

Dr. MacDougall is not a bad person, but he is awful at teaching economics. He seems to teach everything backwards. He will teach you a formula and not tell you why its important or what it is for, until a week later. I would not advise taking his class unless you are will to pay for a tutor from them the very beginning. If you have a hard time in math he is not the teacher to take.

Wow, I think MacDougall is getting a bum rep simply because he's making poeple think. Wow imagine that, you actually have to attend class and study to earn a decent grade. Although some aspects of this class were rather difficult, Neil ALWAYS had time to help out people who were struggling and he was also very helpful durring his office hours. So by all means take another teacher for an easier grade but if you want a teacher who knows his material and you actually want to give your last few brain cells a run for their money take MacDougall.

You couldn't pay me to take another class from this guy. At the beginning of the quarter I thought that although his class would be hard he would be a fair teacher -- not so. There was information on the tests that was not adequately presented in class. More than half the class failed every test including the final which was by far the hardest test I've ever taken. I earned an A in this class but I worked my butt off for it learning most of the information myself. This is a really hard class without having to deal with MacDougall

I didn't expect this class to be as difficult as it was. The more I studied the worse my grade got. He makes it extremely hard to understand the concepts because of his extremely hard math. If you are good at math then go for it. If your so-so at all, don't take it. I had friends w/ other teachers for this course and they when they saw the ridiculous pressure for math they just laughed. Other teachers are more about learning the concepts and making the math easy. You get so worried about how to do the math that you lose sight of what to do. I taught eventually learned what everything meant, but because I could not do the math I got a C minus. I understood all the material too, that's the sad thing. Good Luck, take if you are good at math. Otherwise search for a professor who is about learning the econ.

Dr. MacDougall is a professor who knows his stuff but doesn't know how to convey it well. He expects all students to walk into the class and pick up the math in a matter of about a week. If you can't pass the "Math Proficiency Exam" (which I luckily did) he drops your grade a full letter at the end of the term. Instead of ensuring that the understanding of the economic principals is solid in everyone's mind, he challenges you with not only the principals but also ridiculously hard math. His examples in class all use nice, round numbers and exponents, which gives a false feeling of comprehension because the HW and tests are nothing like that. His grading methods are questionable so be on the lookout for errors. Homeworks take about 2-4 hours each (only one per week though) and are only worth 5%. Overall, MacDougall isn't too bad in lecture but the tests, homework, and grading scale is from hell.

Prof MacDougal was the worst teacher ever!!! Not only was he hard, but he made you do work that wasn't even relevant to any of the topics. He thinks that he is a hard ass, but he know's that evereyone hates him. He picks on you in class... YES he makes you answer infront of everyone and if you don't know the answer he makes you feel stupid. If you try to ask him a question he won't answer you because he never knows the answer. BASICALLY HE SUCKS AND YOU HAVE TO BE ON HARD DRUGS TO TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!

He is the worst teacher I have ever had... His grading was ridiculously unfair and not only that, I literally do not see what the point of this class was... we talked about the same concept the entire quarter. The class is mostly group work which he assigns a week or less in advance. He never responds to emails.. when asked to explain what I did wrong on a test question he replied, look online. He asked us in the end of the quarter, how would you like to see things graded? (isn't that the teachers job) because we didn't do half of the stuff he said we were going to. Oh p.s. everyone in my group got a C in the class while one student got an A. And we were all "supposed" to receive the same grades.

This course is so disappointing that I feel obligated to write a review during the middle of the quarter. Cons: 1. Extremely subjective grading 2. Turns what should be a "Ag-Policy" course into a concentrated Econ course based on his beliefs, opinions and definitions of what supply and demand is. 3. Refuses to end class early (keeps you doing busy work till the end) 4. Passes out assignments after class, not before, causing students to be late for other commitments. 5. Even though a textbook is required for the course, we have not covered one topic from it (which he even admitted during the 5th week). 6. Absolutely NO structure to lesson plans. We have covered 3 things in the past 5 weeks 1. Supply and Demand 2. Elasticity 3. A little bit about Prop 37 (which he is passionately Pro) In 5 weeks we have briefly talked about ONE Ag policy. I was very interested in this course because it directly applies to what my career choice is, sadly if the course continues in this fashion I will consider this a complete waste of time and waste of my money. I have never witnessed a course where most look visibly frustrated and agitated during class. Will do everything possible to avoid this professor in the future.

Definitely should have listened to the reviews before i signed up to take a class with this guy. We spent the entire quarter learning economics and never opened the book. He is a total jerk in class and this was by far the most frustrating class i have ever taken. This was a Policy class but yet didnt learn one policy. He is also very liberal which can get annoying. Oh ya, he dresses like he works at bestbuy.

Definitely should have payed closer attentions to all of these reviews. This guys is terrible. This is a "POLICY" class yet we went over very few topics regarding "POLICY". Make sure to take 212 right before enrolling in this class because that will be essential for success. Actually, you will probably get the same grade because they are pretty much the same. He makes the most condensing remarks to students in class and doesn't directly answer any questions.

this class was my far the most disappointing class i've ever taken in my academic career and is such a sad reflection of what our educational system has become. first of all, professor macdougall is by far the worst lecturer known to mankind and his inability to present the material is pathetic--i dont even know how this guy has a job. this is an ag policy class-one that most agb students could find really helpful. however throughout the quarter we didnt learn anything that had to do with ag policies, but rather reviewed microeconomics. all the tests/homeworks/in class stuff is graded extremely subjective so unless your this guys teachers pet, youre shit out of luck. this class was set up like a kindergarten class. it was so frustrating to sit through his lectures when he looks and talks to you like youre a child. he's without a doubt the LAZIEST teacher i've ever come across--part of his test was to have us come up with a lesson plan..which im sure hell use next quarter since he doesnt have a clue what the f hes talking about when he lectures. honestly, ive never written a poor polyrating before because i always give my teachers the benefit of the doubt, but macdougall was such a disappointment and a waste of my time and education, that i strongly advise other students to avoid taking him, so you can spend your money on a real education.

This class is not at all what it seems. It should be titled Externalities and not Agricultural Policy. The entire class is focused on one single concept and if you don't understand it you you will receive a poor grade. His grading is extremely weird so you have to constantly email him or go to office hours to understand any of it. Honestly, the class could be very helpful however it seemed like everyone thought that it was a waste of time.

I gave MacDougall the benefit of the doubt before this quarter started because I was interested in policy. Neal MacDougall is by far the worst teacher that I've had in any level of education. I'm convinced that he knows nothing about Ag Policy (the name of the class) so he just teaches about externalities. He will talk about one topic all quarter long!!! He grades completely arbitrarily and he tests material that he doesn't explain in class. His tests consisted of a couple questions about externalities and a couple micro econ questions that he never went over in class. I counted three days in the entire quarter where he lectured over real material, and the rest were him rambling on about the same examples for externalities and preparing for another group project. I tried debating one of his points in class and he just got frustrated and couldn't hold a real argument, so he just started yelling at me and making up false credentials about how smart he was and how I knew nothing, he acts like a child when he is under pressure. He doesn't lecture well, he doesn't test easy, he doesn't grade easy, he doesn't give you any useful knowledge for the future, you won't be happy with your grade, and he isn't a pleasant person to be around. If you want to take a class where you will learn nothing from your teacher, you are required to do a lot of projects, and you will receive a poor grade without an objective explanation, then go ahead and take MacDougall. I would consider dropping my major before taking another class from MacDougall, he is actually that bad of a teacher.

"Mr. MacDougall, what you just said is the most insanely idiotic thing I have ever heard. At no point in your incoherent rambling response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. We are all now dumber for having had listened to it. I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul!!" This quote basically sums up how I felt everyday that I walked out of MacDougall's class. The previous comment nailed it on the head. MacDougall teaches with the most biased opinion. He is a self proclaimed "flaming communist". He's very good at avoiding answering student's questions. It's so weird how he becomes "sick" and cancels office hours whenever he passes back a midterm or a quiz that he just knows he just boned us on... Therefore, he doesn't answer questions for at least a week. This tree-hugging son of a bitch should not be teaching at Cal Poly. End of story.

To put it frankly... this guy doesn't know shit about fuck. He lectures the entire quarter about things that relate to Ag Policy but not Ag Policy itself. Instead of doing useful things like seeing how policy is made and analyzing the farm bill, we just focus on the equimarginal principle and externalities. He will give you a test and ask you to define a term. You can put "His" definition on there verbatim and he will dock you off for not explaining it. If you explain, you will most assuredly lose points as it is not the explanation he wanted to see. Do not take this class if you don't have to as you will finish it wondering why you chose a class to get a C in and still didnt learn shit. Waste of Time.

Everyone knows McNasty is the worst professor in the world. Here’s how to tolerate him for AGB 312: take the class cred/no cred if you can, it will save you stress over his horrible grading structure et al. Avoid answering any questions, b/c you’ll be wrong (even if your right). Hammer out questions in office hours b/c he isn't helpful in class. Understand you won’t learn anything even remotely applicable to ag policy and accept the class for the econ review and extension it will be. Take it with friends or a group of people you can work with and laugh at what a joke he is. Best of luck!

Okay. So I've had MacDougall and sworn to myself I would never take him again because he is the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. I had him for 212 where the class average for tests would be a 40% and he wouldn't do anything about it, he'd cancel office hours right before or after a test, and he once even told me "Oh you should have gotten that right, the graders messed up." and not changed my grade. He doesn't teach you, and other professors in the ag department are aware of it and know they have a lot of reviewing to do if you had him as a professor. I very much dislike him as a person, but to anyone thinking about taking him, here is the (as much unbias as possible) lowdown: He completely changed the way his class is now, so props to him for seeing that clearly what he was doing before wasn't working and actually putting the effort to change that. For our class the layout was that you have 3 assignments due over the weekend (a Quant module due Sunday evenings, a JiTT on the material you'll learn the upcoming week and Reading Reflection due Monday evenings.) These typically were not posted on Polylearn until Fridays, so you spend your weekend doing them, which is fine if that's how you do your homework anyway. You have "Module Quants" which are basically tests/quizzes in class and he's pretty good about telling you what will be on those. Then you have Explain assessments which he didn't tell us so we found out around week 5, have to be taken outside of class (pretty sure this is not allowed at the university though). This is basically an essay response. What he looks for in these when grading is that you spit back word for word what he tells you in class, and that's how he thinks you've "mastered" the material, when in actuality it's just memorization. We had a total of 4 "Modules" so 4 quants and 4 explains that we had to do. These are graded on a "satisfactory/unsatisfactory" grade, and if you get unsatisfactory on a Quant or Explain, you can retake them until you pass (passing is 75% or higher). Other than these assignments, you have a group video project which is due at the end of the quarter and you're assigned groups mixed with a Spanish class, it's a shitton of work, and in the end you get another "satisfactory/unsatisfactory". Then you have a final reflection essay which is pretty simple except you can get satisfactory, unsatisfactory, or exemplary, which is needed to get an A in the class. MacDougall doesn't lecture in class, he makes you watch these videos of him outside of class lecturing. The only thing you do in class is in class worksheets which aren't for a grade. You don't learn anything about policy either. It's all on economics. Here's the gist: MacDougall is a shitty teacher but lays the class out in a way that if you're willing to put in a lot of time outside of class, you can get a good grade without actually knowing what the hell is going on in class. To do well, you'll probably need to go to office hours. You'll need to watch the videos he posts and stay on top of the weekend assignments. It will take a lot of time, you won't learn anything related to policy, it's all about immigration, he bashes Fresno State whenever he can (the guy probably doesn't even know where Fresno is though), his grading system can be extremely bias, and you'll probably hate yourself for signing up for his class and want to kill yourself every day for that decision, but Cal Poly doesn't offer enough sections and somehow has kept this idiot around for a long time, so you gotta do what you gotta do.

MacDougall is just not an easy professor. He is very specific in what he asks for and you can even give the definitions he gives verbatim and he can still deduct points. Alright, majority of these posts are probably students that didn't try to adapt to MacDougall's teaching style and tried to get by half-assing the class. I was nervous taking this class with MacDougall because of his ratings, but I needed to take the class and his was the best option. He honestly does want his students to thoroughly understand the material and, unlike many other professors, gives you the opportunity to understand what you did wrong on the exams and retake them. He has many times open for office hours and he will explain EXACTLY what you need to know in order to pass it the next time you take the exam. For this class his grading system is based on pass/fail of exams (pass is 80% or better) instead of an overall average, which I really liked. He can be nit-picky about the answers he wants (which is base of most frustrated, complaining students), but if you just go into his office hours and get an idea of the type of answers he is looking for, you will pass with no problem. Theres only 4 exams, online assignments, a group project, and a short essay. This class didn't require a huge amount of my time, but I felt I had a better understanding of economics from him than any other professor I've had.

This teacher is extremely vague in his videos and explanations in class. For all of his tests you basically have to read his mind to be able to answer his questions correctly. Even if you use a word that means the same he will still mark your entire answer wrong because it was not the word he liked. His lectures are extremely boring and the videos you have to watch for class are basically pointless and irrelevant to anything he tests you on. This class has been a huge waste of time and we have not covered a single thing about AG policy. This guy is a straight up freak. If you don't word things EXACTLY the way he likes, he marks the whole answer wrong. For example, on a test question if you mark one word differently then how he explains it in class, he will mark the whole answer wrong even if that word has the same exact meaning as the word he was looking for. His grading scale is ridiculous. He spends the entire first class trying to justify why he grades the way he does and why his polyrating is so shitty. I can truly say he was the worst professor I've had at Cal Poly and I didn't learn jack shit in his class. I was too busy trying to figure out how this fool wanted all his answers specifically worded. Absolutely ridiculous.

Honestly, this class isn't too hard to pass if you're able to figure out EXACTLY what MacDouche wants to hear when it comes to the tests. There are 6 "midterms" that are graded on a scale of 1-3. If you don't "pass" you get to retake the test, but if you didn't pass the first time good luck passing the second. And once you're behind you're fucked for the rest of the quarter. 1) if you end up in this greaseball's class. I'm sorry. 2) Don't pay attention to his syllabus because he's too fucking lazy and doesn't give out half of the assignments he says he will. Besides, his grading scale is so arbitrary and subjective that it doesn't matter how hard you work, how smart you are, or how much you kiss ass; he'll give you whatever grade he feels like. Even if you get perfect scores on every test, he can deduct from your grade just because he doesn't like you. This piece of shit is the worst professor I've had in my entire life.

Learned and retained absolutely nothing from this entire course, let alone anything remotely relevant to AG policy. one of the hardest graders I've ever come across during my time here. Its all basically an Econ class. Tests are simple.. all you need to bring are highlighters, a pencil, straight edge, calculator and a baseball cap for cheating off the one person in the class that has somewhat of an idea of what the hell is going on. You'll get your midterms back and find out that everyone still failed so you go in for the midterm retakes and he'll still mark answers wrong on your test that are 100% correct, just not worded the way he wants it. Avoid, Avoid, Avoid.. blows my mind that people like this "teach" at Cal Poly. Good luck

He is TERRIBLE. his grading "system" is wack. he claims that he wants his students to learn but he really just wants you to memorize exactly what he want the answer of the question to be. be prepared to go to office hours after every test. And his office hours are mixed with his ag econ and ag policy classes so after the first midterm, you'll get 20 minutes if you're lucky. Prof. MacDougal is a great teacher. The class is very challenging, but MacDougall presents the material very clearly and relates it to the real world. He is organized and pretty easy going when you get to know him. I read all the horror stories about him on this website, but I made myself stay in the class to see if they were right. I found that I do not agree with those stories. The main thing that I appreciated was the fact that he will spend more time in class than planned going over a problem that students are having trouble understanding. He won't just fly through stuff and expect you to learn it by yourself. You do have to work hard and study like crazy to do well in this class, but if you take MacDougall, you will learn a lot.

This class is not difficult. The people giving MacDougall bad reviews are the students that expect to sit in lecture and soak up all the information without lifting a finger. If you perform like this, you will fail in most of the classes you take. You are not in high school anymore, you have to study and prepare. MacDougall is one of the best professors I have had at Cal Poly. He knows what he's talking about, and if willing to help you out if you do not understand. Keys to this class: 1)skim the book ahead of time. Seriously, a lot of the information could be confusing so even just looking at it for 5 minutes will help a lot. 2) before the midterms, write down all the equations that you need to know. there are not that many but they are straightforeward, and it you get them all differentiated you will do fine. 3) you get credit if you try the homework, so at least try to do some. 4) a lot of the quizzes come from the homeworks, which answers are posted on blackboard, so review them before the quizzes. 5) final is optional, so work hard in the beginning and you will do great. I highly recommend this professor, its an easy A if you apply yourself.

Wow, all the low ratings are kind of mind boggling. MacDougall is probably my favorite AGB professor I\'ve had so far and one of the best professors I\'ve had at Poly. Not only does MacDougall explain the material very well, but he practically forces you to understand it. He emphasizes interpretations, which may get a little annoying but it really helps with understanding the material outside of the mathematics. There\'s 3 midterms, and optional final, one easy homework assignment a week, and one quiz a week. Not only is Macdougall extremely approachable, but he\'s also quite understanding and forgiving. He gave me a chance to make up a homework that I totally screwed up on. Not sure why this class has such a bad rap among AGB students; if you are at all comfortable with basic calculus and algebra you should be totally fine in this class.

Professor MacDougall is very smart, always prepared, honest, up to date on issues, and is also a nice guy. My thinking has been challenged in his classes, and I have learned more in them than any other AGB courses. His classes are writing and reading comprehension intensive and are interesting because he can merge concepts with actual situations and always has current topics to look at. My writing improved a lot and because we covered such current and interesting issues, I have been able to use my research for papers in other classes. He uses blackboard extensively, lets students know exactly what is due on what dates, and has well defined assignments far in advance. I highly recommend him for any class he teaches because he will undoubtedly put all his effort into making it an opportunity for you to learn a lot!

This was one of the worst taught classes I have taken at Cal Poly. On top of the countless readings, one of which is his own dissertation, who asks you to read their own dissertation? You are asked to write 500 word papers about these readings that sum them up in order for you to use them later on to write another essay comparing two of the dumb ass papers. He claimed that my papers had to much fluff in them and that I needed to not quote as much, well some of the stupid fucking papers are entirely fluff. By the way he didn\'t tell us this until we had finished and turned in five of them. One of the papers would stat a fact and repeat that fact over and over. How are you supposed to write 500 words without fluff if the whole paper is fluff. Oh and do not ask him a question and expect a straight forward answer. I asked how long our final essays had to be and the answer was, \"shorter than longer.\" than I asked what is short he changed the subject!!!!!!!! DON\'T TAKE THIS CLASS, for the love of god

I have taken 3 classes with MacDoug and he is by far my favorite professor on campus. His views are completely opposite of mine (he's extremely left wing and I am right wing), yet I find that he is very understanding of different views...as long as you present your argument with facts and actual experience rather than emotion and simply disagreeing. He does have a very particular teaching style, but he wants you to succeed, if you want that as well. If you are interactive and participate in class (and are respectful) he will treat you with respect too. He wants you to answer his questions in a specific way but if you pay attention at all during class, it's easy to understand what he wants. There is out of class work for all of his classes but if you're a serious student, you will find that having to work with the material on your own helps you understand it better and then he supplements that understanding in class. I am in my fourth year of college and I still remember what he taught me in 212 during my freshman year. He is vocal about his opinions but that is because he wants to start a conversation and enjoys educated debate. He will pick favorites in his classes and will call them out during lectures but he is not unfair in how he treats the grading. Everything is graded on a Pass or Fail scale and it is very hard to get a fail on most things. He allows you to retake some of the "midterms" if you do fail. There are many opportunities to earn extra credit if you're willing to do a little work. He encourages understanding of the material rather than getting a grade and moving on from the class. Go to his office hours and he is more than willing to give you all the help you need, as long as you are prepared and aren't asking him " He can be very abrasive to certain students and I can understand why he has some really bad ratings, but it's what you make of the class. If you are a slacker who just wants to receive a good grade with very little effort, then don't take this class. However, if you come into this class with an open mind and know that you will have to put in some effort (not much) to receive the grade you want, then you will probably enjoy this class. MacDoug is who he is and isn't going to change no matter how bad people say he is. He is not a bad guy and doesn't want to fail anyone, but he does have standards for his students and has strong opinions that he isn't afraid to share. But he is also super approachable and will listen to opposing opinions when they are presented in a respectful way. KEEP DOIN' WHAT YOU DO MACDOUG!!

I would rather jump in a wood chipper than take Macdougall. He states this class is easier than all his others and it is. The reason for this is because he puts not effort in and just try to push his liberal agenda.

MacDoug is not a professor for everyone. He does not play around and cuts staight to the point. For this class I have moved ahead and got really going on my senior project. I took him so that procrastination would not be an option and I will have almost my whole project done by the end of the quarter. He has been helpful as well as firm, but it has worked for me.

I had pointdexter for 460 and had to repeat it the following quarter. I worked my ass off and it skrewed all my other classes up in the process. He makes you write about six papers which are usually irrelavent to your topic. There was absolutly no time to work on the actual project until the last two weeks. I took it with another teacher, turned in the same copy and got a B on the paper that Mcfagle failed me on. He wants ten year so bad that he screws students over in the process. He's got big time little man complex and he can finnaly take it out through teaching. He may know the information decently, but he cant teach or grade it worth crap. Maybe he just needs to get laid!

MacDougall is not Cal Poly quality...I would not recommend taking him! He maybe very organized-but that is the only thing he has going for him. He is a horrid instructor for senior project. AVIOD HIM for Senior Project--he does get you organized, but is inconsistant in evaluating the written project.

Contrary to what you may have heard, Neal MacDougall is not the devil. This skinny little pencil-neck bitch doesn't have what it takes to be the dark overlord. He's shitty enough at trying to teach so there is no way he would be able to handle ruling over hell. Anyway, here's what you need to know if you are dumb enough to take this guy's class. MacDouchebag consistently shows up late for class, usually five to ten minutes on average. The first two to three weeks are a complete waste of your fucking time so don't bother showing up until around the fourth week. For your first draft of your senior project, I would recommend doing as half-ass a job as possible because no matter how good you may think it is, MacDouchebag will think it is crap. Just so you know, he will provide you with lots of comments about how terrible your work is but he will not give you any advice about how you can make it better. For the final draft, you will need to focus on making MacDouchebag happy. This class is not about writing a good senior project, its about fixing nit-picky bullshit so that MacDouchebag will pass you. Along the way there will be lame assignments and quizzes, again, a waste of your fucking time. By the way MacDouchebag, I know you are going to take the time to read this evaluation since you care so much about what your students think about you. I hope you take some of this criticism under consideration and stop being a dick. Please take this course with another instructor. Fuck this asshole.

without a doubt, the worst professor I've taken in my college career. This guy is such a prick, he failed over half of my senior project class. The world would be a better place if this guy took a very long walk off a short pier. Avoid MacDoughall at all costs even if you have to take senior project with another major. AVOIDAVOIDAVOIDAVOIDAVOID.....i can't tell you how much this guy absolutly licks ass

This is the first class i have ever failed in my entire life. There are so many different ways to do senior project that i recommend doing it any other way then this guy. He has no understanding that the students are on there last leg and trying to graduate. I got an F in this class and put in a good amount of time into a paper awaiting hopefully a C- or at least a D- which is still passing and allowing me to be done next quarter. I did all the work in his class and had a B on in class work, but it did not matter cause the Paper grade is all that counts and it was an F, an 11.5/20 or a 57.5 percent. I don\'t know what this guys problem is, or why he enjoys failing a good amount of the class, but i hope he likes the amount of tuition that is being wasted on every F he hands out. The job security must be nice. Thanks for a great big huge waste of ten weeks and a terrible thanksgiving due to me trying to meet your impossible format instead of just saying screw it and having fun with my family instead of stressing the whole time.

Macdougall's class is the biggest waste of time at Cal Poly. The worst professor that I've ever had. He never listens to students' problems and never cares about them. His class's articles are so irrelevant to course subject and do not make any sense at all. The articles are so long and hard to understand. You will never learn anything and you will just waste your time. He is so unorganized teacher and does not know what to teach and how to explain. He is not knowledgeable and his teaching and grading styles are terrible. The midterm and final paper exams are so irrelevant to class readings. Nothing in this class makes any sense.
