Professor Leong read the labs while in class and didn't seem to know what he was doing or talking about. For most of the lab period he would disappear from class only to come back for five minutes before leaving again. If at all possible get another lab professor!

I honestly don't know how this guy got hired in the first place. Horrible! He would leave class for up to 45 minutes at a time and be surprised when people had left. He could not explain stuff at all. One subject I had learned from my lecture professor and understood it before I came to class, and by the time I left the lab, I was totally comfused. He doesn't have the greatest hold on the english language, so asking questions does not do much good. He doesn't answer questions you ask him because he doesn't know, so he just answers the question he wishes he'd been asked. Huh? Ya. He doesn't even know how to do the labs. He had at least four other teachers come in during the quarter and explain it to him and us because he didn't get it. The man cares about his students but is a horrible teacher! Do not waste your precious time, patience, or frustration on this guy just take it next quarter. Keep your sanity and avoid at all costs.

DON'T TAKE LEONG!!!! This guy is totally incompetant! He doesn't understand or answere questions, he always leaves for most of class, he cannot explain the labs, and his accent is so think and he studders so much that it is pretty much impossible to understand him. Plus, he always makes everyone stay for the full 3 hours!

Dr. Leong is a very intelligent man however fails to impart that knowledge to his students in a coherent manner. Often in his lectures he will skip a step and have to backtrack causing the whole class to be confused. His tests aren't too bad if you can follow his lecture and take good notes since he tests on his lectures and most of the time his lecture has nothing to do with the book (I wasted $60 on a book I never even opened). Furthermore, expect to go on field trips on Saturday at aweful hours (6 am) since he is a morning person.

Dr. Leong is a nice man but is softspoken and extremely hard to understand. Lab was crucial but unbelievably boring. If you read there was no real point in going to lecture. He curves at the end of the quarter but it is not worth the stress of this class. Don't take it unless you're a liberal studies major

Tests are on much more information than he covers in class. Suplemental instruction is a must, like an SI class. I have had him for Bio 115 lab and lecture, and Bio 113 lec. Get on his good side: he really wants to pass everyone. Don't take him if you can avoid it.

I had Kingston my first quarter at Cal Poly and while I was incredibly scared of his class because of other ratings here, I found him to be a jolly little hawaiian man who loves science and has a goofy sense of humor. His class is pretty hard, but if you study your lecture notes, you will do really well. Dont bother buying the textbooks, besides the lab manual, because we are half way through the class and havent needed to open them yet. Goodluck

I really liked Dr. Leong and his bio 113 class. He tries hard to help all students succeed by doing things like throwing extra quizzes to replace your bad scores and making the final optional. He is really kind and will help you whenever you have a question. A tip for this class: Study before every lab. You will have a quiz each lab session which will effect your grade, and if you are taking this class, start collecting insects immediately. You will have to have 30 different insect species mounted, labeled, and identified by the end of the quarter, and they are harder to find than you might expect!

Dr. Leong is a really nice guy, he's just not the best professor. His lectures were okay, they were kind of confusing if you didn't already have the notes printed out, though. He likes to give about a quiz a week, and the notes are pretty hard to figure out on your own, so if you don't go to class it will make this course way harder than it needs to be. Don't bother buying the book, I think I used it once or twice, but buy the field guides. Overall, this class wasn't THAT bad. His grading policy is very fair, he drops a midterm/final and 2 out of the 8 quizzes, and he also weights the lecture or the lab more (depending on which you did better in) on your final grade. I wouldn't reccommend this class for a GE (like it was for me) but if you have to take this class for your major don't worry, it's a lot of memorization and the bug collection sucks, but if you stay on top of things it won't be that bad.

Dr. Leong is a nice, yet misunderstood professor. I am serious about the misunderstood part also; he just isn't very good at getting students to understand him. In the lecture, material is presented on powerpoints that are also available on blackboard, but you should go to the class since he throws "pop" quizes. There are 5 quizzes and 3 tests(2 midterms and an optional final). In the lab you spend your time memorizing insect and animal orders and classes. There are two mandatory Saturday field trips and a 30-piece insect collection(oh, you'll love it). Take this class if you like insects and memorizing their order names. He grades on an easy scale, with a C being in the 60-79% range, so if you want to take a class that is not too hard to pass, this is it. It was frustrating at the time, but looking back, it really shouldn't have been. Also, do not buy any of the books except the lab manual, everything on his tests are from the powerpoint presentation.

Well, when people said you should start bug collecting immediately when you sign up for this class, I thought they were joking. But the truth of the matter is that finding 12 orders of insects is very difficult to do (if you don't understand what I'm talking about now, you will)! I suggest finding crickets/grasshoppers, flies, bees, cockroaches, beetles, aphids, water striders, silverfish, moths/butterflies, termites, preying mantis', and earwigs (commonly known as pincher bugs). If you find these twelve orders right away, the other 18 bugs you find can be anything you want (all flies if that's what you really want). Also, ONLY BUY THE LAB MANUEL. We used two field guides once each on the two field trips, and they cost $20 each. I ended up getting $3 for one and $2 for the other, so it's not worth it. Other than that STUDY HIS LECTURES, don't bother with the book, stay on top of the material and go to class for pop quizzes, and be ready to teach yourself a lot of information because Leong confuses the heck out of everyone.

This professor is usually confusing and hard to understand. He gets confused by student's questions. His lectures do not go along with his lab instruction, so it's like taking 2 different classes. He does post all of his lectures on blackboard before the class, which is very helpful. He does give pop-quizzes to make sure you attend class. There are 2 midterms and a final, but he only counts the 2 highest scores out of the 3. For the lab, there are quizzes everyweek, which helps prepare for the midterms. The major part of the course is the bug collection, which takes so long to finish. Collecting the bugs is hard, it's best to start early. At the end though, it's really cool to have the bug collection.

I was terrified to take Leong because I heard he was impossible to understand. But basically if you go to class (or atleast study the powerpoint on blackboard) it's not that hard to get a decent grade. He has a huge C range (60-79) so it's almost impossible not to pass his class. He curves his tests and he really does want everyone to do well. If you have to take any of his classes, just make sure you get him to know who you are and you'll do fine in the class.

Dr. Leong is a very sweet man but he really doesn't have a clue how to teach. You can tell he is very smart but he just can't get the material across without confusing the hell out of you. He doesn't respond to emails and when I tried to go to his office hours, he wasn't even there. Lab and lecture really don't have much to do with one another -- there is a ton of memorization and you have to do this really gross bug collection! Start collecting asap! There are also two Saturday morning field trips. His tests can be kinda hard, but are mostly based on his lecture notes. If you can, I would try to avoid taking this class.

This teacher is very smart and knows his material, but he does not know how to teach it. He is one of those INSTRUCTORS that is filling an empty hole in the Bio department not a teacher. He failed miserabley. He is difficult to understand even if you are at the front of the class. He talks to people one on one instead of to the whole class when answering questions. His classes were a joke to me. I am suprised that I even went to them. He is so UNORGANIZED that it drove me insane. THe only problem is that he is the only teacher for this class, so good luck.

Dr. Leong is a great professor. I took him for BIO115 and enjoyed every minute of it. He is straight and to the point. For the tests, study the lecture notes and you'll do fine. You don't even need to read the book. I actually found the test to be on the easy side but each person is different. Each test had 50 multiple choice questions. Maybe 1 or 2 questions would be from the book, but the other 49 or 48 questions are straight from the lectures. He is very concerned with the students. He gets the students to think about the topic by using audience participation during his lectures. He might stutter 2 times during a lecture but that does not detract me from learning the material. Probably the hardest part of this class is the lab. Try to get Dr. Leong as your lab instructer if you can. I would definately take another class with Dr. Leong. If you ever need help understanding something, go to his office hours. He actually takes the time to get to know the students and he'll be glad to help you.

I had Dr. Leong for Bio 113 and 115. My conclusions: nice guy, not so great teacher. As someone said, he's smart, but he doesn't get things across to the students very well. Watch out for his tests- he tends to put questions on them that are ambigious, and sometimes he will tell you one thing in lecture and then on the test, it is a wrong answer. Lab final in this class was horrible. The average in my lab section was a D. Unfortunately, Leong may be your only option- if so, I would advise you to pay close attention to the tests and talk to him if questions seem wrong or unfair. Leong also likes to make overheads with teensy tiny writing and not let anyone have enough time to write enough down. It sucks.

Dr. Leong is clearly a very intelligent man but he fails to present the class material in an easy to understand/organized manner. He will go off topic onto his personal life and stories that have nothing to do with anything and will never get back to the point of the lecture. If you take his class be sure to go to lecture every day and take good notes as the tests are based solely on his lecture (even though he tells you 10% of the questions are from the reading). Dont waste your money on the book- I read the first section but he covered it all in class.

Easily one of the worst teachers I've taken at Cal Poly. He's hard to understand. I had a hard time paying attention in class. He makes a lot of mistakes and confuses himself. I think that my 8 year old cousin knows a little more about Biology than he does. He seems like a really nice guy, but for some reason he has a hard time answering students questions. For example, on the first day of class he had a really hard time explaining his grading policy. He just confuses himself. When students ask questions he gives you an answer totally different than what you asked. All in all, he's pretty horrible.

He's funny, once and a while. That's about all he's got going for him. My best advice is to sign up for SI and skip his class. He doesn't know a fucking thing about Biology. I guess a while back an entire class petitioned to get him fired, but it didn't work. He's so horrible. I hate looking at him. Sometimes I would rather die than go to class. Easily the worst professor I have had here in the last two years. Seems to be a nice man, but can't speak well enough to get out a lecture. He mixes things up in his head, and jumps all over the place in his notes. He makes his overheads so small you can't read them but your only chance of passing the class is taking good notes. No questions are from the book, so don't bother buying it. Leong's goal in the class are to make the tests as hard as possible so he can prove to you how much you don't know, but then he curves, some, in the end. I failed every test and got my first C of my life. Avoid him at all costs, but LS majors you will have to struggle through him.

Dr Leong is an extremely intellingent man who knows and loves his field of science but he is completely unable to present the information to the class so that we can understand it. He does not give orderly lectures and from day to day the facts seem to change. He is a nice man and adjusts grades in the end. Dr. Leogn definitely should be teaching a higher level of biology, or should learn how to teach to our level. The only thing that saved me was the very competent lab TA. I would not reccomend taking Dr. Leong if you have any choice. For sure take SI and attend lectures even though they are hard to follow.

Dr. Leong was a terrible teacher. He may know a lot about biology, but he cannot teach it! He stutters and jumbles up his words all the time, and you can hardly tell what he is saying. His lectures are very unorganized and he skips around from subject to subject and changes his mind here and there when questions are asked. Sometimes he even gets frustrated with people for asking questions about what he just wrote. His overheads WOULD be helpful if he kept them up for more than a minute. His tests are hard and don't test anything you've learned, but rather if you are a good multiple choice test taker. He likes to ask questions that include "all of the above, two of the above, none of the above", etc as answer choices. It's crazy! He did make an occasional joke here and there, but most of the time you couldn't understand it anyway. If there is another teacher teaching this class, take them instead! I honestly don't know what some of these students are complaining about! Dr. Leong is easily one of the best teachers I've ever had. He knows the material better than he knows his wife, takes the time to reach to auditory and visual learners with both oral and written forms of communication, and he keeps the class lively with stories, jokes, and fun little "did you know?"'s. I've never been able to fully grasp biology before but he makes it so that the student can learn, always leaving time for questions and willing to explain even the easisest comment over to the class. Oi! This class is not for the slackers! You must study extremely hard for the tests (the lecture class grade is based on only two major exams, and a optional final to replace one of the exams). Since Mr. Leong cannot speak english very well, it is sometimes difficult to understand him, or he has difficulties trying to explain something. His exams are based off of his lecture, so listen carefully and take really good notes. However, the questions that he poses on his exams can be quite confusing.

Leong isn't nearly as bad as everyone makes him out to be. He has a generous curve that passes almost all students. The tests really aren't that difficult and he makes the finals optional. In Lab DO NOT forget to study before each lab or your grade will suffer severely.

The lecture tests are very hard, with extremely confusing questions. Sometimes it's difficult to take good notes because he either rushes through the material or is unable to clearly articulate the information. The lab quizzes are difficult, so be sure to read through the previous section before each lab. The tests in the lab are easier because a lot of the questions come directly from the quizzes. He may know a lot about Biology, but he does not know how to teach. I wonder if he even has a teaching credential?! I took Bio115 my first quarter at Cal Poly (I transferred from Cuesta) and I was appalled at his lack of ability to teach. The quizzes were all done as a Power Point presentation and on one of the questions on one of the quizzes the correct answer was not an option, and NO "none of the above" was not an option! The man is scatterbrained and unorganized. Granted, he is a nice guy and did give us the option of taking the grade we had in the class or taking the final. He just needs to take a class on organizational skills and another on how to teach (sitting through Educ310 with Dr. Maas would help him tremendously!). If at all possible, AVOID LEONG!

Just know that if you sign up for Bio 115 with Leong you will have sooo much studying to do. We had two quizzes a week, one in lecture and one in lab. They weren't that bad if you studied for every single quiz (which I didn't) but he is a fan of using multiple choice options "two of the above" and "all of the above" which can make things difficult on exams. Leong is a nice guy but I thought that tests were unfair and very hard. His grading system is ridiculous too. Instead of CURVING the test when the average is a 66% or whatever, he widens the C range. So a 60-79 would be a C...which sucks because I bet most of the class got a C in that class. Don't take this class unless you are really good at Bio.

He gives many quizzes, but only chooses the top 5 to be added towards your grade. The quizzes seem horrible during the quarter, but they really help towards the overall studying for midterms and optional final. It just helps you to not get behind in the class. He stutters frequently and has a mild Hawaiian accent, but you can still understand him. He's very helpful if you take the time to ask him questions. Leong is a good teacher, regardless of some of the other ratings! His class is challenging, but he is more then willing to help his students out. He widens the C range to a 60-79%, which was definately helpful for me. I was not expecting a C in the class and on the final meeting he said that he would give me one, even though the grading showed that I had a 59% in the class. There are usually three quizzes a week--two in lecture, one in lab--but as long as you paid attention and studied to his previous lecture, you will do fine. He only takes the top 5 quiz scores anyway. All his notes are on blackboard and I suggest printing the powerpoints--they are helpful during lecture! Don't buy the book, I never even took the wrapper off mine! The only bad thing about him is that he leaves during Lab so you just end up sitting there for awhile until he comes back. Definitely not a hard class, just repetitive and there are soooo many quizzes. We had a quiz literally every single day of class, both lecture and lab. I guess that's sort of a good thing because he only counts your top 5 quiz grades so the more you take the better chance of a higher grade. he posts all his notes online, which i recommend printing out because he usually switches the slide before you've written everything down. He is one of those professors that truly wants his students to succeed. He gives out extra points every time there is a mix-up about anything because he cares more about you learning the material than anything. I was really nervous to take this class because I had heard how hard it was and how much work it was, but I seriously loved it. He doesnt get enough credit for how great of a sense of humor he has too, because he had me cracking up at least twice every lecture. There is a lot of information to know, but if you are interested it doesnt make it too terrible to keep up. I know he open up the C range from 60-79%, so he really just wants people to do well, and he will even make deals with people if you take his optional final, which was also nice. There was a quiz almost every lab/class but it helped you keep up on the material. I am going to miss Kingston!

In lecture he sometimes has a really hard time explaining what he is trying to say, but in lab he is great (and has a fun sense of humor). In lecture expect a test every time, all the information comes from the powerpoints, I didn\'t buy the text book, and I never needed it. The class itself is a lot of information, and a lot of terms which is what made it hard for me. Overall very nice guy who wants you to succeed.

It is obvious that this man loves what he is doing. He made something I normally would have found boring seem relatively interesting.

Dr. Leong seems like a great instructor. He offered me a senior project over the summer because he recognized the interest that I have in entomology. Although I haven't taken a formal class with Dr. Leong, I know he is very understanding, well-rounded(not just focused on research) and will try to help you be the most successful in your field. He is great at complementing, and is very intuitive. Although he may seem "crabby" at times, and hard to approach sometimes, this is because he is an extremely busy man. He may also demand much from you in class because he wants you to be the best. Nevertheless, he knows his students, and will get to know you and help you in class if you speak with him at the right times.

This was his first time teaching the course and he did a pretty good job. It is the bio half of the bio/engr thing for engineers. All you have to do is go over the powerpoint a few times before the quiz to pass. A good guy overall.

Because BIO 213 is a lecture-hall course, it requires a professor with a loud, clear voice and an ability to present material very effectively. It is also because of the class-size that I had to give him a "C" for "recognizing student difficulties", because it's just not feasible with a class like this. Professor Leong has a bit of an accent, but you get used to it very quickly. He generally speaks clearly enough, except when making his side jokes to the front rows of the classroom. He can actually be quite humorous sometimes--when he begins a sentence with "have you ever...", you'll see what I mean. The material, presented on PowerPoint slides, is usually clear and concise. You really don't need the book unless you plan on skipping class and not downloading the slides from Blackboard. Your grade is about 9-10 quizzes, one each week except the first, and I can't remember but I think you get to drop one. They are given at the end of class and are always on the previous week's material, which may seem strange; however before each quiz he gives you a little break (5-15 minutes) during which you can whip out your old slides and just read through last weeks presentation a few times. In conclusion, go to class, get the PowerPoints, and buy some scantrons. If you don't get at least a B, you're probably a moron.

Dr. Leong loves insects and it shows in his class and lab. He is so quick to identify the insects for your collection. Also get started on the insect collection right away. It becomes pretty crazy at the end of the quarter. But it is easy to do if you spend a little time each week doing it. Tests are not always easy but if you study the lecture notes you will be fine. Plus he curved our grades like crazy. Easy to asks questions to if you can find him but overall I like the class and would recommend it if needed.

First of all, some of these students are either racist, stupid, or both. He does not have a "foreign" accent and actually has a Hawaiian-American accent, which most people do not have a problem understanding (since we are actually listening during class)... Entemology was much more interesting than I expected. Dr. Leong really knows his insects. If you go to his office hours, you'll find that he's very helpful and friendly.

This guy is an awesome professor as far as I'm concerned. He makes the lectures interesting, and he also puts them all on powerpoint (and uses blackboard). Most everything you need to know is in the powerpoint presentations. The first test he gave was pretty difficult, I didn't do too well, but I really should have studied the powerpoints (I'm sure I would have got an A). He was flexible though, students told him that certain parts of the test were too difficult, so he didn't include those parts on the next test. Either way, I had a good time in this class, and learned a lot.

One of the best classes I had at poly! It was informative, clear and interesting. Anyone who has a problem with ZOO 335 isn't applying themselves. BTW, I'm an engineering major.

I took Dr. Leong for Entomology lab and lecture. His accent does get in the way sometimes in lecture, but everything is posted on blackboard so you can just follow along with notes if you're confused. His lab was easy (especially if you are taking this class after mammalogy) as long as you study your material. This professor is genuinly enthusiastic about insects and that comes across in his teaching. I would recommend him to anyone considering taking this class.

Leong is genuinely enthused about insects. He\'ll have you dreaming about them by the end of the quarter. I had him for lecture and lab. The class is pretty easy. I showed up for class once after the first midterm and still got a B in the class. If you show up there\'s no way you should get below an A or B unless you screw up in lab. The midterm though was pretty nit-picky. There was stuff on it that seemed pretty minute compared to the stuff he could have asked. He did curve the percentages though. Start on your insect collection early and make use of the time to look at all the insects. He likes to put tricky insects on the quizzes and midterms and he WILL intentionally try to trick you. Overall, he\'s not that bad.

During this entire quarter all I could think about was how this professor reminded me of that small little dog that runs through the back of scene 23 in The Incredibles by Pixar. Seriously, if you look it up you will only be able to see it...
